Weaver confirmed that long-time Tech personnel Billy Hite and Jim Cavanaugh are being reassigned within the athletic department and will no longer be part of the football staff.
Hite coached running backs at Virginia Tech from 1978-2010 and Cavanaugh strong safeties and outside linebackers from 1996-2010 before both were moved into personnel roles in a staff shakeup prior to the 2011 season. Hite served as assistant to the head coach and team advisor the last two seasons, while Cavanaugh was director of recruiting and high school relations.
Weaver said their positions within the athletic department should be finalized early next week and didnt want to comment specifically until then.
He said their positions within the football program will probably not be replaced.
Cavanaugh too? I thought one of the reasons to move him off the road was so he could be hands on with more recruits. I'm a bit concerned now.

I believe this is because Stinespring just got moved to his new position and took a more active role in recruiting. This saves us some money since we would be paying the two of them to do the same job. Hopefully Cav will be happier in his new role because I know he wasn't pleased with being moved at first.

In Cav's previous (recruiting coordinator) position, he was not allowed "hands-on" with recruits. Since he was admin, not coaching, he could not visit schools or coaches. He could (I believe) talk to and host recruits when on campus for visits. He could coordinate from behind the scenes. My guess is he will work with the alumni (which he will good at) and enjoy a well deserved retirement.
