Pitt RB James Conner Diagnosed With Cancer

James Conner, 2014 ACC Player of the Year and Pitt's star RB, has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. This is very tragic for a guy who already had his season cut short by a knee injury.

Fortunately, Hodgkin's Lymphoma has a high probability of being cured.

Best of luck to Conner on both his recovery from his knee injury and his fight against cancer.

Wow. That's awful news. Good luck, James.

― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

Damn that's awful, but Hodgkins isn't too bad (as far as cancer goes, obviously), he'll probably be fine with just radiation and could easily be back in football.

Terrible news, thankful that it has a high cure rate.

Thoughts out to this man. Kick cancer's ass!

Exit Light, Enter Night....Go Hokies

Damn...Sad to hear. Hope for a speedy and successful recovery.

If anyone is interested, this is a great opportunity to donate to Virginia Tech's Relay For Life, which has been the largest collegiate Relay in the country for 7+ years in a row now. We have raised over $500,000 every year in that span, and want to keep it up.

Between VT's Relay and Penn State's Thon, a ton of money is being raised to battle the terrible disease. Keep donating and it will be downed one day!

Penn State's THON raised over $13m last year to battle childhood cancer - incredible!

Us Hokies do awesome work too with Relay!

Get well soon, Conner!!!!!!!!!!!!

Makes me so sick to my stomach for this kid. Hope he crushes cancer and is an NFL MVP one day.

Cuck Fancer!

Go Conner, Hokie Nation supports you!

We put the K in Kwality

That's what the linebacker out of BC (Mark Herzlich, I think?) had a few years ago, isn't it? I only ask, because he kicked that cancer's ass and is still in the NFL. Hopefully Conner can do the same. Best of luck to him.

It was a catch

It was Herzlich, but he had Ewing's Sarcoma, which is a rarer form of bone cancer. If caught early, like his was, then it's relatively survivable.

Ah, you're right. My bad. Should've fact checked, but was in a bit of a hurry.

It was a catch

Still in the NFL, too.

Terrible news. But I still plan on watching him play in the NFL for a very long time. Get well soon!

I really hope he beats this. I'm glad the cure rate is high, but it's still a tough ordeal. I remember Flip Saunders had Hodgkin's lymphona. I was hoping for the best for him, but I sort of assumed he would beat it because the cure rate is so high and no one had any doubts that he'd be ok. And then when he passed away, it was tough for everyone to believe it.

If he treats cancer like he treated VT's defense, he should be due for a speedy recovery

The Dude Abides

Dang, best wishes to him and his family during this process.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Temporary setback, that's all. Chin up, young man.

Leonard. Duh.

"When I heard those words--`You have cancer'--I admit I was scared," Conner said. "But after thinking about it for a bit, I realized that fear is a choice. I choose to not fear cancer. I choose to fight it and I will win.

"One year ago today I was asking myself, `Why me?' Why was I the lucky one to be getting the ACC Player of the Year award when I had so many teammates who deserved it as much as me? Now one year later, instead of asking, `Why me?' I am saying, `Why not me?' I can beat cancer.

"I know there are so many people in the world who were told by their doctors this week that they also have cancer. I want them to know that together we can--and will--beat cancer.

"I will play football again. I will be at Heinz Field again. I have the best coaches and teammates in the country. I thank God I chose Pitt because now I also have the best doctors in the country and together we will win. I know this city has my back."

Conner has amazing perspective on life. I wish I handled adversity half as well as this. Thoughts are with him and hope to see him line it up against Virginia Tech, or in the NFL, again.

Many people have been saying about how Conner is everything that is good in college football. Really, I feel bad for cancer in this situation. I mean, seriously, why would you pick a fight with this guy?

Wow. Seems like he's got a terrific head on his shoulders. Everyone associated with him should be proud. I wish there were more like him. He's a rare breed.

Onward and upward

Such terrible news, but he will come back from this!

I think it's worth digging up an old thread on Conner to let you all know that he's apparently doing well. Here's a statement from Narduzzi.

I wish the best for him. Love to see him fighting hard and keeping his spirits up!

No offense, but I hope he has the flu the week we play Pitt. He is a handful to try and contain.

I don't, I want every team we play at full health with no suspensions. Our team has worked too hard along with the staff to just win games off the misfortunes of other teams. We need to beat teams at their full potential and that is what this coaching staff and new strength and conditioning staff have prepared this team to do.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!
