This is just the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my whole life. If Ruffin did something stupid and illegal, then, sure, fine, get rid of him. But if ECU is only firing him to try and convince Lincoln Riley to come back then they need to have their heads examined.

This is really surprising. Sure they only won 5 games, but that's in a year where they lost a ton of top level talent, the AAC is as good as it's ever been, and they had some real tough out of conference games that were very competive in (beat us, should have beat Florida, close with BYU). He seemed to have elevated their position there.

I don't know. I'm a big fan of the Dread Pirate Leach, but his personality is a tad unorthodox for a college football coach. I'd assume that there are probably at least a handful of administrators and boosters who wouldn't shed a tear about his departure. I certainly don't think they'd fire him any time soon, but I don't see them extending him or offering him a raise to stay. If not for the fact that we play ECU every year, I'd actually really like to see him end up at ECU. He's an entertaining guy and I think he could do very good things at a school like that.

I do have a Viking axe by the bed if I need to whack someone. ... My wife bought me a Viking axe – the axe side curls down so you can grab the adversary around the neck and you can use it to climb walls, as a grappling hook.'

ECU might have just outed itself as the single worst job available in college football. Why the hell would you want to go work for a school that is irrelevant in the big picture, but will fire you the second you don't have them playing excellent ball? They really did just reveal that their expectations of a coach is way too far removed from the reality of their situation.

Even as a die-hard hoo basher, I really don't see how anyone could put Rutgers ahead of UVa, or anyone else on that list except maybe North Texas. I'm really curious as to what their reasoning for placing them at 4th was.

I agree with their placement of SCAR and Mizzou, but I think UVA, Cuse, and Memphis could go to any spot 3-5 justifiably. Pretty big toss up for me at that point.

Ruffin McNeil is a heck of a good coach and an even better guy. We had a lot of ECU fans and students in my section when they came to town last year and all of them loved the guy almost as much we love Frank here. This is truly a baffling move, unless they've already got a better coach lined up and waiting.
I'm actually a little worried that UVa might go after him. They could certainly do a lot worse.

Dang and like Coach Beamer, McNeill both coached and played football at their respective alma maters. Literally the only logical explanation for this would be that some big name guy is negotiating behind closed doors. This made absolutely no sense if not.

Wow, are they delusional.... I thought Rutgers fans were delusional, but I now nominate the ECU Athletic Department for that post. Just un-f@#kin' believable....

According to 247 evidently the Director of Athletics met with the team to talk to them about the firing. Needless to say that team wasn't very happy with the decision and how it was handled...
Just sent to me #ECU players describing team meeting w/ AD Jeff Compher, finding out about McNeill firing pic.twitter.com/qUz7ahynB0— Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL) December 4, 2015
Well that went well....

I think we just witnessed the death of ECU Athletics.
Seriously, there really isn't much recovering from that. Well would want to coach for that AD and who would want to play for a school whose administration does that? The only choice of action is to clean house in the Athletic Department and start over.

If I'm shane beamer I'm staying the hell away from that program. Feel like the team won't be totally behind whoever they bring in. That's gonna be a really hard job to pull through

Looks like we'll be seeing Coach Ruff for some time to come:
Former #ECU coach Ruffin McNeill to #UVa as assistant head coach and ILB coach. Great addition to Bronco Mendenhall's staff.— David Teel (@DavidTeelatDP) December 12, 2015

I think as hokies (and UVA haters) we underestimate the UVA desire to win. I think the UVA mold will be "wins without cheating and minimizes off-field issues". If Bronco does that, then the hoos will be happy.
The Ruff Bronco combo is promising for their program. I don't consider it to be a splash hire, but its way better than I expected for them.
That being said, I still hope for their continued failures on the field, best personified by:

I live in an area consumed by UVA fans and most everyone of them has stated they are liking the hire but hope he doesn't have his teams at like they did at BYU. He also seems a little ruff around the edges. And I quote "I'm not sure our type or recruits will like his rough exterior"
They are more excited at McNeill being hired then Bronco, so we shall see.

....there can only be so many such places. You must live on UVA's campus. Because being from Charlottesville, I can tell you that it's pretty close to 50/50 Tech-UVa fans.

I live in Lynchburg, it's like UVA vomited and all their fans landed in Lynchburg or Forest. It's about 50/50 but UVA fans whine a lot more around here.

I'd like to think they already have Lincoln Riley locked up to be the HC. Otherwise this makes no sense.
DRINK!
But seriously....#MikeLondontoECU please...
I just have one thing to say about #MikeLondonToECU
Edited to add:
My very first green post ever. Thank you Emma, thank you.
Hey, I said it first in the other thread!
Drink.
But do it responsibly.

I will if you will!

But we can all have a drink. I do like the Emma Watson gif. I mean, it's ALWAYS the right time for one of those.
Since everyone is being so friendly
Chris Farley at his best!
The previous 3 seasons, he went 26-13, 18-6 in conference.
He has one down year and he gets fired? Is this a joke?
A down year where his starting quarterback got injured a week a before the season started, as well.
This is really surprising. Mike Leach would be perfect. Seriously, the guy is absolutely crazy about pirates.
I think he's pretty entrenched in Pullman. Plus he got Wazzu ranked this year, so they'll probably try pretty hard to keep him.

Obligatory: Mike Leach keeps a Viking ax under his bed for self defense.
Baffling. I guess they got tired of beating ACC teams.
Those are pre-season games.

They may have to fight that out with UVA
From yesterdays top 5 current openings.

Id rather be at UVa than Missouri.
who is this girl on CFB, I was working from home yesterday and noticed her for the first time, seems like she lacks knowledge, just didn't really contribute anything important.
Elika Sadeghi
She came from elevenwarriors.
Her comments are as sensible as any of the other talking heads, and she looks better in a skirt than most of them.
It's a tough business for women.
I'd kill for that job...
Sarcasm? Pretty funny follow on twitter over the past couple years. Only mark against her is how big an Ohio State fan she is.
Well, at least we beat UVA to avoid going 0-3 against teams who fired their coach.
This is so stupid. Who the hell wants this job now?
If London goes to ECU and McNeil goes to UVA, does that mean we will suddenly start beating ECU and losing to UVA?
Well, hopefully this means our annual matchup wont be as scary and heartbreaking as usual.

first thing I thought of. Do not want Ruffin to go to UVA.
Dang and like Coach Beamer, McNeill both coached and played football at their respective alma maters. Literally the only logical explanation for this would be that some big name guy is negotiating behind closed doors. This made absolutely no sense if not.
This could be good news - as in maybe we will finally win a game vs. ECU. /s
I mean - we've won before, but they always play us close.
Seriously though - what is ECU thinking?!?
Maybe they already have someone lined up?
Or maybe they just had too much cash on hand.
Let's go with the cash statement...
doesn't make sense, maybe an opening for Shane Beamer.
Since Hokies have to play both teams every year, I would love to see AL Golden get the ECU or UVA job . Shane Beamer is better off with USCs.
I know three question marks that are very interested in the ECU job!
I feel like we're doing our Pick Six this week on the ACC Coaching Carousel
All I keep asking myself about McNeill getting fired
Wow, are they delusional.... I thought Rutgers fans were delusional, but I now nominate the ECU Athletic Department for that post. Just un-f@#kin' believable....
It is interesting to think about Shane taking this job considering how we will be playing them until after Shane's children are grandparents.
Shane just might be interested in order to get a shot at sticking to VT for not getting the head gig here....but I don't think he's that kind of guy
According to 247 evidently the Director of Athletics met with the team to talk to them about the firing. Needless to say that team wasn't very happy with the decision and how it was handled...
247 Article Here
It's another recruiting opportunity, from where I sit.
That was a B.S. move. What was the AD thinking?
Well that went well....
I think we just witnessed the death of ECU Athletics.
Seriously, there really isn't much recovering from that. Well would want to coach for that AD and who would want to play for a school whose administration does that? The only choice of action is to clean house in the Athletic Department and start over.
This is probably good news for us...maybe we can beat ECU next year...
Any good transfer candidates or recruiting flips from ECU? The Fuente staff should definitely be looking into this!
Seems 247 is saying Shane is potential candidate.
Sensible landing place for him. Would be a bit of a swift kick in the nuts, though, having to go against him into eternity.
If I'm shane beamer I'm staying the hell away from that program. Feel like the team won't be totally behind whoever they bring in. That's gonna be a really hard job to pull through
Looks like we'll be seeing Coach Ruff for some time to come:
From one enemy to another.
The folks at UVa are diabolical in their lameness.
I think they'll continue to suck, but they might continue to suck some decent recruits into the abyss.
Wouldn't be any different from the last six years
Well...when you can't beat a team 12 years in a row you totally hire the person that can beat that team. I do not like this.
Nor do I, my friend.
NUTS.....
I hate to say it, but UVA is putting together a decent coaching staff.....
Till Bronco pissed all UVA fans and donors off and is pushed out the door in two year because he doesn't fit the UVA mold
I think as hokies (and UVA haters) we underestimate the UVA desire to win. I think the UVA mold will be "wins without cheating and minimizes off-field issues". If Bronco does that, then the hoos will be happy.

let's be honest here, they have a lot more to whine about so it's not surprising you hear that more from them...just sayin'

"most everyone of them has stated they are liking the hire but hope he doesn't have his teams at like they did at BYU"
Is it because BYU is the first team listed when you google dirtiest college football teams?
Dang, you weren't joking.

I honestly think McNeil would have been a better head coach hire than Bronco. Kinda shocked he's been demoted all the way to position coach.
Seems like he could have held out for a head coaching gig.
This is surely a quick solution.
I wonder who has to pay him, ECU or UVa?
Per Twitter
......yeah, I'm baffled
Well, at least this process didn't blow up in their face
Who had ECU as the first school who would drown in the coaching carousel of 2015?
Nobody, considering they fired their coach super late and unexpectedly. They started out dead in the water.
I guess ECU decided that what Nebraska went through this year was just too much fun to pass up.
