Hokies fans, this should be the game where you invite everyone over, hook the computer up to the Television, sit back and not imagine a stressful thought all afternoon. Also note the early afternoon time, rather than a 7PM start like most of our games. The Golden Lions come in with two point wins over Seattle and SE Louisiana. Their losses include a 28 point debacle to Hawaii and a 21 point loss to Army. There is also that 49 point loss to Cincinnati. The closest they have come in a loss was 14 points to Oklahoma State in their second game of the season.

As long as the Hokies come in ready to play, their pure athleticism should be enough to run Pine-Bluff out of the gym. The average differential in their games this year is -22 points per game. They have ten players playing more than ten minutes a game right now. The primary reason is that they are consistently in foul trouble and are forced to go deeper and deeper into their bench. They have eight players averaging more than 2 fouls per game, and as a team are averaging over 25 fouls per game. Given the Hokies penchant for drawing fouls this season, this could be a game where they shoot 40 or more free throws.

Therein lies to the two edged sword, and whether the Hokies can make their shots. Have a decent 70% night and run away early enough that Joey Galloway and Greg Donlon get 10 minutes a piece on the floor. Shoot poorly and possibly let the Golden Lions hang around. Hopefully we get the Tech feel good story and the end of the bench cleans this one up late. If you haven't been keeping track, Tech is currently leading the country in free throw attempts still at 33.3 attempts per game average. The unfortunate part is that their shooting percentage is still 64% on the year from the line.

I would expect to see Buzz experiment in this game, using a ton of different defensive looks more to get our players used to them in game rather than the effect they may have on Pine-Bluff. I would look to see Clarke at the top of a full court press early on, trying to force early turnovers and getting this team down early.

The one area that is a concern is that this team does have a couple of perimeter shooters capable of hitting threes so the Hokies can ill afford to leave them open outside. They also are an experienced team with five Seniors and five Juniors on the roster. You don't want to give a team with that kind of mix hope or they might seize it and win this game.

The Golden Lions are led by Jovaughn Love (#22) 6'9, 220 lbs, listed as a Senior guard, he is averaging 11.6 PPG and 5.8 RPG. It appears he plays mostly a wing type role, similar to Chris Clarke, taking advantage of his height and size to overpower smaller wings.

He is joined in double digit performance by Ghiavonni Robinson (#23) 6'3, 190 lbs Junior guard. Robinson is putting up 10 PPG and 2.9 RPG to go along with 2 SPG. Robinson is as much in the way of defensive glue as this team seems to have as well as their primary ball handler on the offensive side.

After these two, it's just a group effort both in playing time and production. Looking at their roster and game logs, they will likely play with a bigger lineup than most of the other teams we have faced, going with a mix of Thaddeus Handley (#3) 6'6, 200 Lbs Senior Forward, Trent Whiting (#15) 6'7, 205 Lbs Senior Forward, and Deshon Bayless (#30) 6'8, 220 Lbs Junior Forward. These three combine for about 45 minutes a game, usually two out of three being in at any one time. They manage 14 points and 10 rebounds amongst them each game.

In everything I have seen so far on Pine-Bluff, there hasn't been a consistent offensive or defensive identity for this team. Mainly, to be honest, it seems that their lack of talent means that their identity is dictated to them by far superior teams, forcing them into different styles of play almost every night. It struck me that this might be the perfect landing spot for Mike London, although not his primary sport to coach, because in lieu of sending out recruiting flyers that said YOU, London here could put out APB's to all his recruits (bad teams make for bad jokes).....Arkansas Pine-Bluff if it didn't hit you over the head by now.

This is a game that Leday needs to step up early, showing that the Northwestern game was a fluke, against decent sized opponents. We will also need a good showing from our bigs, with Pierce probably playing a very similar role in this game late like he did against the Wildcats. The rest of the team needs to make this game about utilizing their talent and not falling into a battle of bodies down low. It will be important that our guards hit their open shots to stretch the floor, making Pine-Bluff come out and have to react to our player's ability to drive the ball rather than letting them pack the lane. It would also be nice to see Chris Clarke extend his double-double streak to three games.

Even with their size, the Golden Lions have been getting out-rebounded by over thirteen boards per game, especially on the offensive end. Our team needs to continue to improve in this area and get those easy put back baskets in the lane. Tech should outscore Pine-Bluff by at least 20 points in the paint, control this game from the very start and finish this game winning 84-57, or something very similar. The amount of scoring may depend on how experimental Buzz gets in this game with his roster and his defensive alignments. Let's Go Hokies!

Hokies need to handle their business today. Enjoy the game!

I see that Johnny Hamilton is suspended from games indefinitely until his academic performance improves. Might not need him in this game, but his size and athleticism will definitely be needed going forward.

Really is too bad. My basketball knowledge is next to zilch but I really liked what I saw of him in the couple of games I've watched this year.

Hopefully it'll be a wake-up call and he can get it turned around

Arkansas Pine-Bluff's schedule is ridiculous. Of their first 17 games, they play 16 road games, 1 neutral site game and 0 home games.

at OK State, at Michigan State, at Cincinnati, at Nebraska...after they play us they still have to go to Iowa State, Ohio and Missouri. It's just crazy.

Its how their school pays for all the other sports they play more than likely.

Should be another high-scoring day for Allen. Towards the end of reg season he should get a nod for All-Conference.

Unfortunately you are probably right. These are the games I wish Buzz would make him focus the other attributes of his game. I am not saying he shouldn't score but with opponents like this he should be able to work on passing first and ensuring he is back and set on defense.

I agree that other attributes of his game are very important to cohesiveness of the team as a unit, but LET THE MAN SCORE! There is nothing unfortunate or bad about padding stats. The rest of the players need to really step up with him.

Allen is shooting 35% on the season, every other player in the main seven players is shooting at least 45% from the field and some as high as 63%. The others take much better shots than Allen which is why I want to see him pass to open teammates more.

Buzz is a numbers guy, so I'm guessing he'll be all over this.

Anybody hearing anything on Tyrone Outlaw? Comment on another site they will be evaluating his situation within the next week, don't know if it is credible.

Nothing I have heard is good. I know most of its been hush hush but this may be another case of a medical disqualification because the doctors are not satisfied he won't collapse if they let him play. Hopefully I am just hearing #sauces.

Is it similar to the Allan Chaney situation?

From what I have heard, almost exactly another Chaney situation

Should know more about his situation in the coming weeks.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Its game time. Hopefully someone recaps the first half as I am stuck at Mt Vernon with family

Should have let APB know it was game time.

Hudson with the start and we have a Tyrone sighting early.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

15-2 start. So glad Buzz kept these guys focused.

23-2 Hokies

In Sam Rogers we trust.

More fouls by APB (17) than points and rebounds combined (7,5)

I really wanted to hold ark pb under double digits going into the half.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Is Zack Leday our best player? Or just the most consistent?

VT wins 80-45. It was 37-16 at half FWIW. Glad we took care of business.

business is serious business

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

40 Free throws - Check
Better than 70% - Check 77.5%, 31-40 for those interested
Galloway and Donlon on the Court - Check (Donlon is going to suffer having so many bigs that need playing time ahead of him, Galloway the folks ahead of him have enough experience to sit down for a few minutes - really nice to be able to say that) Galloway got 11 minutes tonight and scored more than Justin Robinson 5-4.
80 Points or more for the Hokies - Check
Five Hokies in double figures - Check

All around this game went about as well as it should have. Tech had an ugly shooting percentage in the first half but took care of making their free throws. They held APB even lower scoring wise than I thought they would at 45, and towards the end I was hoping they could keep all of the APB players from reaching double digits but alas, they had one player reach 10 points. Robinson with a team high five assists, but all around the number needs to be higher than the 13 the team got total.

Leday went 9-10 from the free throw line which was rather impressive. He definitely bounced back well from his last game disappearing. This was his fifth double-double of the season. Still surprised at the minutes that Buzz had the starters in for but you could tell he was having them try some new set plays and rotations on offense.

Only real negative was that the bigs other than Leday had games to forget. Henry, Blackshear, and Pierce combined for 26 minutes, 3 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 6 personal fouls. Definitely not the kind of game that these three should have had against larger but unskilled opponents.

Henry is really limited on offense. Even in the paint somewhat contested, he had trouble putting the ball in the basket. Not sure why Blackshear didn't get more minutes this afternoon. He's pretty raw, but I think he's going to be really special in the days ahead. Pierce on the other hand gave about as much as I expect we'll get out of him nowadays.

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

On Henry and Blackshear I pretty much agree, but as for Pierce, the sad part is against Northwestern, he played 19 minutes, scored 6, pulled down 7 rebounds, had no blocks and no turnovers with only one personal foul. He needs to find a way to match that output rather than what we saw against Pine-Bluff.

Leday was definitely money at the free throw line and might be our best shooter. Can't say I've seen a power forward shooting technical free throws for a team, but Leday did it and drained them both. It was also really good to see Tyrone Hudson show up with an emphatic dunk to open the game! I thought he gave us a lot on the defensive end as well. Lastly, Bibbs looked more aggressive today which was good to see. The dude is money from 3!!

I just hope we don't go lose (again) to lowly Radford. We seem to still be in that funk where we lose focus and don't take care of business at hand.

Radford actually has a decent team and will be one of the more formidable teams we've played all year. They beat Georgetown and Penn State on the road, and Georgetown just beat 15th ranked Syracuse.

#5 in the bottom pic...I'd almost forgotten about him! That was a good group back then.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

You mean Dorenzo Hudson? I remember making a dunk he had against Wake Forest my computer background back in the day.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

yeah, Dorenzo Hudson, currently playing for a team called Panteras, down in Venezuela.
