Dr. Mike Gentry, Associate Athletics Director For Athletic Performance, announced Friday that he will retire following Virginia Tech's upcoming bowl game. He will continue to serve the Hokies in an advisory capacity through June 30, 2016.
A key member of Frank Beamer's football staff for 29 seasons, Gentry currently oversees the strength and conditioning of all 22 varsity sports programs at Virginia Tech, in addition to supervising Tech's sports nutrition and sport psychology programs. Gentry was inducted into the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010. American Football Monthly also named him its Samson Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in March 2005.
Thanks to Dr. Gentry for his many years of service to VT athletics! He developed our strength and conditioning program into one of the best in the nation.

Isn't he the guy that basically handles the players during all the off-season training and weight room sessions?
Yeah, I was thinking more about Conte's comment about Gentry being a big reason he came to Tech, I know once they are here they will spend a lot of hours with the guy, just never imagined recruits thought about that so much in the decision making process.
IMO, Gentry was a huge reason a lot of our 3* guys went on to be NFL caliber players. A huge cornerstone for which Beamer built the program on.
The "retirement" is interesting considering some of the tweets in the days following Fuente hiring. Will be interested to see who gets hired.

It will be interested to see what happens. Doesn't Jarrett Ferguson work with the football team? If we go after the guy from Stanford (VT grad), he may want to replace guys like Fergie with his own.

Unpopular as this may be, I'm glad to see him go. He had too many irons in too many fires these past few years and I personally believe his time had come and gone. He definitely positively influenced our football program, and I do appreciate his past contributions, but times have changed and I believe it is time for us to change with them.

The Stanford model is pure crap.
I've posted this before, but the reasons why we've had so many ACL tears, and the reason other programs, both in the NFL and elsewhere is due to the predominance of favoring training that focuses on the quads, like front squats and high bar back squats, when they should have the athletes doing low bar back squats.
So lets look at knee anatomy. What does the ACL do? The ACL holds the tibia (the shin bone) to the femur (thigh bone) in a way that prevents it from being pulled out and away from the joint like you would a drawer. This this is how they quickly diagnose ACL tears on the sideline, they simply pull in the shin bone to see if it has any forward give, some give indicates a sprain while a lot indicates a complete tear.
Now what are the functions of the quads. The quads cross two joints, therefore they have two functions in our skeleton. At the hip, they are known as hip flexors. This is their weakest area as you have 4 different, small attachments to different areas of the pelvis. As the quads get closer to the knee they form a common attachment to a single, large and powerful tendon known as the quadriceps tendon. This tendon passes over the knee cap and becomes the patella tendon, this then attaches to the front of the tibia. These series of attachments work to extend the knee, or simply it works to pull the lower leg up, and to do so, it pulls all of the kinetic force on the tibia. It's pulling against the ACL.
Now the hamstrings, since it crosses two joints, it also has two functions. It's minimal function is to flex the knee while it's primary function is to extend the hips. However, we're talking about the knee. The hamstring inserts on the tibia from behind and acts as a counter force against the pulling of the quad. Both the ACL and the hamstring prevents the tibia from moving forward.
At this point, it should be obvious that when you neglect the hamstrings, and focus on the quads, you then, by simple physics, put a lot of strain on the ACL because of the muscle imbalance.
Now, when you low bar back squat, what happens is that your back angle must become more horizontal to be able to properly maintain the center of gravity over your middle foot. This back angle loads the hamstrings (as well as the adductors, the glutes and external hip rotator muscles) and results in a lift that is one that is primarily due to hip extension rather than one that focuses mostly on knee extension. During a properly performed low bar back squat, the hamstrings work to extend the hips while the quads work to extend the knee. A high bar back squat has minimal hip extension due to horizontal back angle.
Also, another issue is that by a large, a whole lot of strength and conditioning coaches allow or even endorse shallow or partial squats, this also completely takes the hamstrings out of the lift and focuses all of the stress onto the knees and the quads.

Turley is from Bluefield, WV (an hour from Blacksburg). He grew up down the road from me and my mom taught him in elementary school.
I feel confident he would come back if asked.
Don't we have two assistants who used to play here? Shouldn't they be rewarded for all they've put in? Jarrett Ferguson and Ryan Shuman? You think either of them may get the nod to move up? Both are young and may offer the "fresh" perspective fans here seem to want.

I see what you're saying, but unfortunately no. If they are deserving they will get it. Not rewarded for the time they "put in". Hire the best man. Period.
I think what the biggest issue is that Gentry oversaw ALL varsity sports, not just football. We're going to need someone with experience in a wide range of sports to replace him. Strength and conditioning isn't the same for Women's volleyball, as it is for football.
But imagine if it was, our women's volleyball team would be feared nation-wide.
Unfortunately, a Hopkins-esque slam'n'Haduken isn't considered a valid play in volleyball...although I'd allow it.
He was the Director over all the sports, but Terry Mitchell is the main person over Olympic sports and Dave Jackson is over the basketball teams. The guy from Memphis is most likely the guy coming in with Fuente and the other football S&C guys will be on a probationary period in which they will know if they get retained past that time period. Most likely you will see a split similar to Hokie Vision in that football will only deal with football. Dave Jackson will oversee Basketball and Terry Mitchell will oversee Olympic Sports. That really isn't all that different from now other than that Dave and Terry report to Gentry. Instead the three will now individually report to Ballien.
Not to mention his retail physical therapy business, which had to take up a fair amount of his time.
What about Jimmy Whitten?
I personally would like to see a VERY fresh face. I hear bits and pieces of the integration of technology into the HNFE world that we may or may not already be utilizing. We're already leading the way in football helmet research, it would be nice if we started getting a rep for advance fitness tools.
As far as technology integration, I know we were one of the first programs to utilize the internal temperature monitors for players. I know that's one anecdote in a vacuum, but I've always had the feeling that even under Weaver, we were embracing the cutting edge of sports technology.
Suddenly all those recruiting misses make more sense.

In all seriousness, the technology was pretty awesome. Just a silicone pill with a thermometer and a transmitter. You hold a handheld receiver to the small of the player's back and get an accurate reading of internal core temperature. Then after the natural course of things, the player just LOLUVAs the pill out.

One of the many faces behind the rise of our football program. I'm pretty sure he was an innovator when it came to methods. No idea if he has written a book, but would enjoy that if not.
He wrote a book called "A Chance to Win" which seems to be out of print but you should be able to find a copy easily enough.

Having met Rohrk I think he will be a great hire if we get him. He'll get our players fired up that's for sure. Haven't met Coach Gentry in person, but I've always liked talking with him on the phone. He's done a lot for the school and I hope he enjoys his retirement.
