Mike London to College Park

This won't make Fuente's job crootin' the Commonwealth any easier.

That's not good

Crap

Welp, he will also make loluva's recruiting tougher, as well.

I don't think it hurts us that much. He got fired. Took a major step down (he's not even a coordinator). Can't look good in the eyes of recruits.

We put the K in Kwality

A 23-38 record going in to 2015 at a basketball school and he's recruited the #30 ranked class talent over 4 years talent rank. VT ranked 29th

UVA has 2, 5* players while VT has one thanks to family ties

He's a bad head Coach but recruiting appears to be his thing

I always sort by avg stars. To me, it's a better indicator than the rankings which IMO disproportionately reward elite recruits and, more importantly, the number of recruits overall.

By average stars, London didn't look quite as potent as a recruiter.

Wasn't Settle also a 5*?

Depends on which recruiting site you look at.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

That's true. I think he was a 5* on Espn, but a 4* everywhere else.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

He was going into his senior year and then didn't keep in shape. The three real sites dropped him to a 4* and espn lazily left him at 5*

They didn't just lazily keep him as a 5 star. They thought that he was a 5 star.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

The anti-ESPN circle jerk is strong in the site.

The anti-anti-ESPN sentiment is strong in this post.

Using /s is for cowards.

The same ESPN that thinks the leading candidate for NFL MVP is the 13th best QB in the league, or that the only remaining undefeated, who has a 2 game lead on the whole league, is the 5th best team in football, despite beating 2 of their Top 10, including #3 on the road?

Yeah, they really know their stuff...

You realize 14 of their 16 games are against the NFC South, AFC South and NFC East. Hearty congrats on your record so far.

Don't get me wrong, some things are not good, but ESPN does great on other things. But, it always seem to boil down to DAE ESPN sux 111!1.

Gets old fast.

The fact that they update recruit ratings FAR less than the other sites has me inclined to disagree with you

ESPN doesn't do as comprehensive a job evaluating tons and tons of players but when they do evaluate a player they dig in pretty well, and if they do rate someone as a 4 or 5 star, it's not on a whim. Settle is going to be a beast.

He dropped in rankings with Rivals and 247 because he was an academic risk and got too heavy. His elite explosive first step was still there but he lacked the strength and conditioning to follow it up. ESPN doesn't re-rate all that often so they left him as a 5-star. My guess is he was so focused on academics his senior year that he let his fitness go, and now that he's in a college S&C program with nutrition plan, plus has academic support that he'll be a lean mean 320lb sack machine this spring.

Tell me, when was the last time London coached a position?

Couldn't even land a DC gig. double demotion.

"Mike, you're going from head coach to position coach. Do you see this as a debasement?"

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

Yeah, that's not good. Recruiting the DMV region is going to be more difficult because of this.

He basically playing the role that Tom O'Brien played while he was at UVa.

I'm really not worried about this. If a recruit wants to go to Maryland because a washed up defensive line coach that was fired from LOLUVA due to the obvious inability to coach tells them they should, by all means be my guest.

He got multiple five star athletes to come to UVa, it's clear he's an excellent snake oil salesmen.

At this point, if the kids want to buy what he's selling, we probably don't want them at VT.

Maybe he's been doing us a favor by thinning the herd.

There's a big difference between recruiting Virginia kids as the Head Coach at UVA and recruiting Virginia kids as a position coach at Maryland. Then add in that his reputation was built largely on 2 or 3 elite kids over a 5 yr period funneled his way via a now fractured relationship.

I'm not saying he'll be a non-factor, but I don't think he'll be much of a factor.

My thoughts exactly. This doesn't concern me.

Yeah, Maryland is a really tough sell unless a recruit is living in Maryland. It just doesn't have the same appeal that Tech does. If you take a look at their current roster, it's almost completely players form Maryland and Pennsylvania with a handful from VA.

We swarm

Timeout.

Couldn't be said any better.

We put the K in Kwality

That Mike London never ceases to annoy me.

Somehow managed to go from my least favorite team to my second least favorite.

He's one step up from snakes in Indiana Jones movies.

Maybe he is going to College Park to utilize his police skills to control the a-holes students at the University of Maryland...

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold up, hold up! TIME OUT now!

TIMEOUT!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

How did he do as DL at WM, LOLUVA, BC and as the Houston Texans DL?

Play good, smart football and WIN. That will help our recruiting along. Stop worrying.

I'm not convinced that Mike London is a recruiting asset at the moment. He was set up at UVA in a favorable spot by the Thoroughbreds, and it actually probably backfired on him. The 'breds didn't like VT because we wouldn't stroke their egos, and London played nicer. He got himself a couple of 5* kids, and then did what with them? Nothing! He got a couple of stars and very little else in terms of top recruits. You can't win with such a disparity across recruiting classes. And now the narrative can be reasonably crafted that London, despite a willing pipeline of talent, still couldn't do anything with them at UVA. If he starts winning some head-to-head recruiting battles with prospects we want, then I'll start getting concerned. But recruiting to UM, which has had its share of perception problems and is not competitive in the B1G, is not going to be easy.

"He got himself a couple of 5* kids, and then did what with them? Nothing!"

That's not entirely fair. He did get one of them to accomplish this:

to the heart of cygnus' fearsome force we set our course

But but he was only a 3 star out of high school!! He shouldn't be able to do that!!

Really wanted this gif to keep rolling for about 1.5 more seconds.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Are we presuming that the Thoroughbreds connection is now dead? I would think that MD is still close enough that Mike's connections down there are still very much in play in College Park.

Don't know if it's dead, but he certainly didn't achieve much with the talent he got. That has to put a damper on that pipeline.

"Exit light..."

Not worried... Now if chip west followed London I'd start to get worried.

West was londons ace recruiter.

I feel this will affect current recruits committed to UVA more than anything else.

Especially since no one is strongly recruiting them from LOLUVA.

Meh

Maryland still has a tiny bit of momentum going from the Big Ten entrance, but its fading fast, as everyone realized just how far back in the pecking order they are up there. Would not surprise me that they need him just to keep the status quo. Once we get rolling, and our offense performs as a Fuente offense does, and its paired with a Bud defense... Its going to be incredibly difficult to recruit against us in this region.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I'm actually excited by what our new staff is doing on the recruiting front. I have a feeling our recruiting will pick up big time so let's not get too discouraged by this news. Let it all play out for a couple of recruiting cycles. I like where we're at right now...if it was this time last year, yeah, I'd be worried, too. Give the new crew a chance to show what they can do, they got the keys to a cadillac, let them drive it around for a while.

I don't think this is the end of the world, but for those who think recruiting the DMV (DCelaware, Maryland, Virginia) with people who seem to be pretty well connected, doesn't so much matter, UVa and UMD sure seem to put a lot of stock in it, and I'm thinking Virginia Tech needs to as well.

There actually is one bit of irony here, and that's UVa paying Mike London to recruit for UMD.

DMV (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia)

I'm pretty sure the D in DMV stands for DC, not Delaware. Nobody even thinks of Delaware really.

Correct. And nobody is recruiting DelMarVa either.

They're certainly recruiting Maryland and Virginia.

We can make excuses if we want, but there are some good recruits in this area, and if it's important enough for Penn State, Michigan, and Maryland to provide a focus on it, we'd better be paying attention.

DelMarVa is the peninsula that is shared by the 3 states, not a nickname for the area. It's mostly Delaware and there really isn't anything exciting out there.

Bingo.
Only a handful of kids have come off/out of Delmarva to make it big time.

Not anymore anyways, I lived on the ESVA for about 7 years before moving down here to the OBX. Once I moved away, there truly was nothing exciting left out there.

Good seafood, good fishing, Chincoteague & Assateague Islands, Ocean City, Evolution Brewing in Salisbury, great kayaking/paddling board...i think I just named everything good about Delmarva

Dogfish Head!!!!
And now RAR in Cambridge.
It is peaceful, for the most part. And the weather has smiled on us this fall/winter so far. (Which is nice with my son playing an outdoor soccer league thru Jan.)

forgot about Dogfish Head, never heard of RAR til now, seems like a nice brewery

vtnerf...stalked your profile, you're a civil engineer in Salisbury? Ever do any work with Accomack Co? I worked for them for some time

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Had my VA license for a few years but never had the chance to use it. Got to Pocomoke, but not south of the border. I was all over GlenRiddle since we did the platting and survey stake out for the development. Also had a part in Sunset Marina in West OC.

RAR: Head brewer was at Evo for some time, and cut his teeth learning from Dogfish and Harpoon disciples. He's got a long leash, lots of support, and "good" water. (Think Wild Goose from the mid 90's.) He's knocked several out of the park, and I'd choose his IPA over 60 minute and Lot 3. And often do!

Chincoteague is fantastic if you like a lower-key getaway. My fiance and I take weekend trips out there from time to time.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Good point. Corrected.

Good for him.

College Park does need more cops

@VTimHokie85

It looks like Maryland is trying to assemble all the ACC rejects. Maybe they'll grab Al Golden too.

They really do want to throw money at the problem.

Though they did get a bargain on Mike London, since UVa has to pay him.
