JUCO 4-Star QB Jerod Evans Taking an Official Visit to Virginia Tech

Per Gerry Hamilton of ESPN, 4-star quarterback Jerod Evans will be taking an official visit along with his little brother, quarterback Caleb Evans, this weekend to Virginia Tech

Evans has played the last two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College (Athens, TX). He is rated as a four star quarterback by 247Sports and is 6'4 200 pounds. He would have two years of eligibility.

Here is film from his freshman season at Trinity. He throws an accurate ball and has a couple of nice look-aways on the free safety to eliminate over the top help on deep throws. He looks like a strong runner as well.

His most recent HUDL video is below.

Big dude, runs well and makes people miss.
He carries the ball a little low in passing drop backs, but he gets rid of it quick.
Glad he's visiting. He's with his brother, that is very interesting scenario.

EDIT: Read your post.

You're Brothers? Why yes! Virginia Tech is in the Brothers business!

Per Gerry Hamilton of ESPN, 4 star quarterback Jerod Evans will be taking an official visit along with his little brother, quarterback Caleb Evans, this weekend to Virginia Tech

I just hope that we don't offer Caleb in the hopes of snagging his brother and end up with an Asante situation

I've read that Caleb plans on walking on where ever his brother ends up.

That's great!

I mentioned this in another thread, but on October 7th, Evans had two offers: UAB (who really doesn't even have a program currently) and Memphis. Fuente has been on this guy for a while. Same article said he was a potential mid-term enrollee, so could be here in a few weeks.

It's hard to say how this level of competition compares, but its certainly better than almost all HS competition we see. Evans is ready to come in and compete. I'm expecting him to commit this weekend.

I hope you are right. Also, Scott Frost has been recruiting him since he was at Oregon according to Evans' coach in a free 247 article just posted that says its down to Mizzou and VT.

Fuente apparently has been on this kid like white on rice for a while. Certainly looks as good as a prospect as some of the other big-time JUCO QB's recently. Many schools don't recruit JUCO Qb's for obvious reasons so that has surely limited his offers.

He can sign a LOI as soon as next Wednesday IIRC. That would be some damn huge momentum moving forward.

This is correct. He is an early enrollee anyway though, so he's going to be on a campus in January

With Allen transferring out, I'm concerned that Texas A&M could easily swoop in and take him.

~#JustinTime~

They have two 5* behind Allen once Tate Martell gets on campus. I don't think they are worried about getting this guy.

edit: So this turned out to be maybe the dumbest statement I've ever made

Martell won't be there until 2017.

All of a sudden, I found myself in love with the world
So there was only one thing that I could do
Was ding a ding, dang my dang a long ling long....

Forgot about that. Still though, they don't need him.

All they have now is Murray (who may play baseball this Spring) and the JuCO guy (Is his name Huebner?) who came in late in the Ole Miss game.

Agreed. I think it's too late at this juncture. JUCOs can sign on Dec 16th I believe and he plans to early enroll anyway so I have a feeling he's far along in the decision process

This is definitely an interesting scenario. Kid gets rid of it pretty quick and makes some nice reads and is able to get on time on target to many of the short to mid range throws. I think deep throws are his weakness and I'd be curious to see some more in depth video on the 25yd+ completions.
He looks like a natural athlete and one thing that jumped out at me was how light he is on his feet. His feet are always moving and he always on his toes. He has a deceptively quick first step and has a great ability to make the first man miss. Along with his light feet, he's able to plant and deliver the short to mid throws and get it to where it needs to be. Perfect fit for CJF's system.

If this kid commits and comes in mid-term as mentioned above (possibly), DL2 and JJ are in SERIOUS trouble!

If he comes here, I could very easily see Lawson bolting, especially if Joshua Jackson is still in the mix.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I don't know him as a person. But it's just crazy to me these kids seem so scared of competition these days. I understand you want playing time, but he would only be in year 2. Redshirt, learn, get better. Earn your job.

Lawson will be on the same level as everyone else. None of these guys have any experience in the system. The best guy will win and if it's not Lawson he will have an opportunity to learn the system and hopefully take the reigns.

What's
Important
Now

Exactly, that's the way its supposed to go

not quite true. Loeffler's "system" is very similar to Fuente's at least in terms of play design. (Maybe not so much in terms of complexity and tempo, but Fuente's is expected to be easier to pick up in that regard)

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

it's part of the "instant-gratification" mentality we're seeing in players these days. if they can't make it as starters, they go somewhere else to compete for a starting job. it sucks but that's what's happening...

I blame all the participation trophies they started handing out to kids about 20 years ago. Because you know, everyone has to be a winner.... What a joke.

Go Hokies!

I want the best guy playing QB, but I have a feeling DLaw has the most potential.

Don't know if it matters to anyone but he actually weighed in at 230 lbs this year. Also his stats were from 8 games so he averaged close to 400 yds passing per game.

This kid has thrown for 3,000 yards and 38 TDs this year with 62% completion rating. Talk about impact in recruiting, THIS would be it.

Scott Frost was after this guy at Oregon and he visited UCF but is reportedly only interested in a P5 school.
247 is reporting Odom at Mizzou and Fuente are battling it out. Fuente apparently flew out to visit him just days after being hired at VT and was already recruiting him at Memphis.

FWIW, I checked his 247 profile an hour ago and it listed his status as "cool" for both VT and Mizzou. Both have been elevated to "warm" in the last half hour.

I'm always curious as to why kids end up at JCs. Anyone know his story? Sounds like maybe he wanted to prove himself and get bigger offers?

Always choose joy.

doesn't look like he was even ranked or even had offers to play football after HS so he went JUCO

Signed up to go to the Air Force and tore his ACL. Decided it wasn't for him and wound up at a very good JUCO for developing QBs.

This weekend is huge for recruiting

Hopefully this will turn into another weekend at the office for us

Keep calm, Gobble on

Hopefully tons of recruits on this weekend including many positions of need, and some JuCo

And thats it, we have a record: 12 straight original posts without a TE joke!

We are entering a new era of Hokie Football!

The Dude Abides

Odom and Fuente Battling for top-ranked JUCO QB

Fuente has been recruiting Evans as long as anybody. "Coach Fuente flew over last week to see him," Smiley said. "He knew about him the whole time at Memphis, knowing something might go down, telling him if our guy (Paxton Lynch) goes to the league you're our guy here. Then it was wherever we go you're our No. 1 guy. He takes the Virginia Tech job and not a few days later he flies to go see him."
Smiley added it was the same situation with Odom and new Central Florida coach Scott Frost, adding Frost was about to come visit him as the Oregon offensive coordinator and next thing he knew he was working to get Evans down to UCF.

Evans did take an official to Central Florida along with Nevada but the two Power Five program appear to have the inside track.

"I would think Virginia Tech or Missouri at this point, although he enjoyed his time in Orlando," Smiley said. "He wants to go as high profile as he can go and play in the offense he wants to play in. He wants tempo, he wants to be able to throw the football and be able to use his feet at the same time without being a running quarterback."

Texas is also showing interest in Evans who could decide very soon.

You'd have to think that Virginia Tech has the edge, with Fuente having a longer relationship and being the QB guru.

Agreed. Also like the comment by his coach that he's "the best thing to come through this league since you-know-who."

Thats crazy. Saw where Auburn and Texas message boards are going nuts about this guy going somewhere else.

Shhhhhhh

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

isn't he still committed to another school? I guess he's just taking a look.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

No

Impressive.

I have to say that I'm excited about Lawson, but at this point we need depth at QB. I would be thrilled if we got this guy and I would hope that Lawson would stick around. Just because this guy comes here does not mean that he would be the guy.

Lawson has all of the tools, a coach that develops QBs, and is still young. As someone else pointed out, stick around and compete for the spot.

Good weekend for recruiting. Weather is gorgeous right now.

Nice, I can see the 5 OL and 6 qb offense coming!

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Not to be a negative nancy, but he seems to have a "hitch" in his motion - seems to make his throws die near the end of a long throw too. Kinda like Tebow or Tyrod before it got fixed. Anyone else notice that?

I'm no so sure. I didn't see that "hitch"in his motion. His release is low (but he is 6'4", so I'm not sure how terrible that really is), but seemed pretty quick to me. He locks in and releases very quickly.

He seems to be a quick decision maker and he puts the ball right where it needs to be... and boy does it get there in a hurry!

Is coronavirus over yet?

Hitch might be the wrong term then - just doesn't look like an Eli Manning / Aaron Rodgers type of motion; not smooth and looks a bit jerky. Hence the Tebow comparison.

If so, we'll give Rodney Taylor a call.

Fuente is moving quickly. I am pleased to see this.

Also want to point out that Steve Wiltfong of 247 pretty much called this last night when I talked with him. Relationship with Fuente was a big, big deal to him.

This is just great to see all around. Speaks volumes to how this program can change the recruiting battles now that we have a better idea of the future of our coaching staff! Honestly, bringing in another QB is great and I keep trying to feel good about this even though we all want to see Dwayne Lawson, but if the coaches feel he isn't ready a smart kid wouldn't jump ship to another school. Tyrod played 4 years for us but honestly we didn't see his true skill come out as a QB until late his Junior and into his Senior season. So if this JUCO kids is all that to his stats and film welcome to Hokie Nation! You have a ton of talent on your hands Coach Fuente!

Caleb Evans signed with La Monroe today.

I forgot his brother was in this class. Did we ever offer him a scholarship?

Regardless, best of luck to him.

Nope, he had SF Austin and Texas St offers to go with his LaMonroe.

Wish the kid luck, I really like that family.
