Evans is a standout signal caller at Trinity Valley Community College (JUCO). The 6-4, 225 pounder completed 179-of-287 passes for 3,164 yards in 2015. He added 414 yards and four touchdowns on 77 rushing attempts. He set a Southwest Junior College Football Conference record for career touchdown passes (52). He also set a TVCC record for touchdown passes in a game (8), and tied the record for touchdown passes in a season (38). He was named the named SWJCFC MVP.
247Sports rates Evans as a 4-star prospect. According to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports, Evans' decision came down to Virginia Tech and Missouri.
"Coach Fuente flew over last week to see him," Smiley said. "He knew about him the whole time at Memphis, knowing something might go down, telling him if our guy (Paxton Lynch) goes to the league you're our guy here. Then it was wherever we go you're our No. 1 guy. He takes the Virginia Tech job and not a few days later he flies to go see him."
Evans has two years of eligibility remaining at Virginia Tech, and according to his 247Sports profile he is an early enrollee.

Comments
Kid is a stud on film. I'm also pretty sure I read somewhere that he would be enrolling in January wherever he ended up..(anyone confirm this?).
That's what all the sources and beat writers are saying.
I can confirm that he will be signing Wednesday
If he's Fuente's guy then I can't wait to see what we do with him. No one on the roster he's inheriting is owed the starting spot.
Well he certainly doesn't lack for confidence.
Go get it then!!
Samuel Denmark may want to stick around VT and not give USCe much consideration at this point...
What a start to Fuente's career!
Lots of talented young quarterbacks on our roster now. I guess that's a good "problem" to have? Now let's fill out some other needs
Sources are saying the main factor was when he saw the new Jerseys/helmets/and cleats we are going to be sporting next year! That is what convinced him to commit.
Can't tell if you're being serious or not?!
haha it was a joke, sorry about that.
If you read the article about the Evans family (a great read BTW), I think a lot of it has to do with the family atmosphere at VT and Coach Fuente's values and beliefs. Plus, Jerod has an excellent chance to start next year.
Wow! I was just watching video on him last night. He had a nearly perfect timed throw over the middle to one of his receivers. He watched him a bit looking to his right but ultimately threw the ball before the break. Pretty impressive.
Come to think of it... He may have frozen a DB by looking right that long.
That bumped us up to the 38th ranked class from the 50th according to 247.
His highlight reel is truly impressive. My brother asked why he's JUCO QB. I haven't been able to find a story on him.
Roanoke Times article on him
Basically he went to Air Force, hurt his knee and left for JUCO.
I think he actually did airforce prep
That makes sense. He just looks way too talented to have gone JUCO first.
His offense really pushed the ball down the field. There has been some comparison recently of Loefflers offense and Fuentes offense. Besides execution and sequencing, I'm looking forward to seeing us having an offense that creates explosive plays.
Damn, I thought it was the Hardee's coupons.
Edit: Meant to be a reply to Hokiefan up the thread. Missed the reply tab, I guess.
Leg for you sir, that was another factor for sure!
Very impressive by this new coaching staff , a great addition to 2016 class.
Tech moved up 14 spots in the 247 composite team rankings, should put us at 36.
Man, it really is too bad Fuente is a terrible recruiter. Just think if he was any good he could have pulled in a FIVE star QB. Oh well....
Are you constructing arguments for which to rail against?
I'll drink a rail to that argument!
Apparently
The Fuente-effect is obviously in full effect.
One of the best problems to have in college football is rostering too many good players at QB. I think we're doing all-right in that aspect, as of the moment. The future is bright, folks.
It would be really great if we could pull in Simms and Moore. Great day to be a Hokie.
Is he on facebook or have an account managed on instagram? I have twitter but haaaaaaate using it
why do you hate using twitter?
How happy are Ford, Phillips, Bucky, McMillan, Rogers right now?
This is awesome.
This Fuente fella is a miracle worker.
Am liking this Fuente guy more and more each day .
He looks like he's levitating.
And? Levitation is one of the many powers Sam MF Rogers possess.
via GIPHY
Well I'm pretty content with this
:D
Initials are JE and he wears #7. I believe the Denver Broncos had a QB with those initials who a couple of Super Bowls!
WOOO!!!
Looks like another JUCO incoming
Oh yeah? Tell!
Evan Watkins just crystal balled Cedrick Wilson to the good guys.
Yep. Currently committed to Boise State. Shibest is lead recruiter
Maybe Cedric Wilson?
No way - did this really happen?
MachoMan with Batman? Leg for totally trumping me, and totally correct assessment of the situation.
MADNESS.... YEEEEEAHHHH
So I'm definitely amped for this but I wonder if its gonna scare of Lawson, I sure hope not!!! I'd love to go from this guy to Lawson in our qb lineage!
oh crap...sh*t just got real!
247 Sports just moved our incoming recruiting class up 12 spots to #38 from #50
Awesome! And as for Lawson, I see zero reason to suspect a transfer. He's got a coach now who is seen as a QB guru, a wide open competition for the starting spot, and let's not forget he'll have to sit out a year if he was to transfer.
He also still has a redshirt to burn, for some stupid reason.
If you have confidence, you don't fear competition.
The 3-way QB competition will be fun.
Gentlemen lets temper our enthusiasm. With all of this optimism for new head coaches, recruiting genius, beloved coordinators, top talent recruits, and offense I fear we're neglecting something of significance. That being, Can our place kickers leg stand up to all the extra points we're fixing to be unleashing on our opponents asses?
There's no room on the hype train for that kind of negativity.
The kickers will have to man up.
Uh...you mean leg up?!
I guess since he only has 2 years jackson will still stay committed?
Lawson is the only one that it makes sense that we should be worried about transferring. But let's be real, big programs are somehow able to maintain multiple highly recruited quarterbacks on roster at once. EJ Manuel for instance didn't start until he was a junior, and if Evans is the real deal he might only be here for a year.
I thought ej won 4 bowl games?
Yea cause Ponder kept getting hurt
Ponder won the big prize in the long run.
Yeah he did! Samantha Ponder is fantastic, and she is way better then Erin Andrews!
That's his wife, he got 1st round money, and his daughter is absolutely adorable. He won life.
Manuel didn't start full-time until he was a junior -- a little like Tyrod (although the circumstances differed). But he did start some games as a frosh and a soph when Christian Ponder was injured - including the ACC Championship vs VT.
Teams with depth don't have to play freshmen.
I'd hope so, but right now we need someone under center in September.
Ill be excited when anybody with the last name evans commits to the hokies.
I see our offense growing in leaps & bounds with all kinds of talent coming in. And losing only one starting OL man to graduation, it sure is getting very exciting. I'm more concerned about the D as we're losing, Dadi, Maddy, Marshall, D Clarke, D Riley, Vandyke, & Fuller (I guess).....are we in good shape to replace all those?...what do we have coming in? And we need a punter.......
We have Tim Settle coming in.
He's worth about two, isn't he?
Woody Baron was practically a starter this year and played well, Williams has a lot of experience behind him too. Walker and Settle both have a lot of hype should be good at DT. Ken is back at SDE, WDE is either Mihota or Hill who had a lot of hype before getting hurt but definitely the only spot for concern. I think our main concern will be our linebackers, again
You know I have heard a lot of people talk about Settle tearing it up next year but people really forget just how much talent we have at DT. Woody and Nigel both have a lot of playing time under their belt. Woody has been great except for a few bonehead plays (*cough the most untimely offsides ever *cough) and Nigel has an all ACC honor under his belt. I definitely see Settle getting playing time next year but I would be far from surprised if he's not starting against Liberty.
Edit: No worries, I wan't forgetting Sobczak and Walker, I was just naming the 2 guys that will be at the top of the depth chart at the end of this season. I think it will be very interesting to see how the DT depth chart pans out come the 2016 kickoff.
Ladies and Gentlemen lets not forget Steve Sobczak. I'm not sure why he didn't see the field much this year, but every time I saw him (weather it be in the spring game or in mop up duty) the kid was straight owning the interior O-line. Very quick off the ball. I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised when this kid gets on the field!
Because we were very very deep
Didn't he redshirt this year?
No, he redshirted last year. He played sparingly this year. Ricky Walker redshirted this year.
Don't forget that Ricky Walker played decently a true frosh, but took a redshirt last yr due to the depth at the position.
NO WE DO NOT
Everyone, try to be a little PC. According to AJ, they prefer to be referred to as 4th down quarterbacks. They have feelings, too, you know.
I read that differently - I think Portland was saying we don't need a punter because our new offense won't see 4th down. Cant stop the momentum of this hype train!
DT we have Baron and Williams, Walker and Settle, Lewis and Sobzak and then DE we have Ekanem and Mihota, Dooley and Hill, Fullwood and Gaines, we have at CB coming in Ladler who would have been a high 4* this season if not for his injury, possibly a 5* is he was an inch or 2 taller. Shegog and Minor will replace Van Dyke and a lot of these guys were 4 stars or high 3 stars and have a year or more under their belt at Tech except for Ladler. The defense is loaded with talent and experience some positions more than others but next year the line will have bigger players especially if you go Ekanem, Walker, Settle, and Mihota.
I haven't heard very good things about Minor. Do you really think Ladler starts? Our secondary is pretty solid with Mook, Alexander, Edmunds, Fayscon, Clark, Strohman, and possibly Fuller
Ladler could probably redshirt definitely especially with being out this past year. Minor is still behind Shegog and we have other linebackers, but the spot isn't used that much anyways really. Minor is a 4 star from Richmond I want to say (Fisher, Reavis, Caleb...4 stars from there never work out). We also got Johnson, Alleyne available to the secondary next year. So Ladler and Floyd probably both redshirt.
Yea I don't really see a need to play Ladler, especially with him coming off an injury unless we get extremely injury prone again
Harris worked out quite well.
Shegog supplanted Vandyke this year already. He will be a staple. I expect Minor to get work at backer and at whip as back up options because I am not convinced that the staff is 100% sold that Tremaine Edmunds is ready to step in and start. I expect Lydon to get spring work at both backer and mike as well because Foster has trust in Huelskamp as a depth player.
Assuming Fuller doesn't return, the Hokies will be fine in the secondary. They have corner depth in Edmunds, Stroman, Reynolds and Facyson. Clark returns at free safety. Alexander could be a star corner next year or play rover. To me, safety depth (I have heard a ton of really positive things about Jahque Alleyne, but he is the only back up guy that returns at safety) is a huge worry spot.
DL will win with power instead of speed next year. The first half vs UVA shows it is possible (Mihota played very well-more in my film review that comes out next week). I wouldn't be shocked to see Baron slide outside if this current group of redshirting freshmen at DE aren't up go speed. If not-
Ekanem-Williams-Walker-Baron
Hill-Settle-Sobczak-Mihota
Gaines-Lewis-????-Dooley (he has regressed folks. The film has not been kind to Seth Dooley.
Hill-Settle-Sobczak-Mihota
I want to see Pitt run on that front!
Really looking forward to this. I had a hard time forming an opinion on how Mihota played, he's certainly not a speed rusher, but he seemed stout in the run game and never seemed out of place. Thought it was really strange that we were flipping sides for the DEs though, were we protecting Mihota?
A lot of those defensive players I'm not to worried about, Kendall and Dadi are the only real big hits. Woody Baron got a lot of playing time this year and we have Settle coming in there so DT looks good. The secondary was all freshmen other then Faycson and Clark, we should be okay there. Vandyke was injured most of his career and Clarke's play was super erratic this season.
Chuck Clark was really an impact player this year, though. We will miss him until some of the younger guys get seasoned. That said, I'm really looking forward to seeing how much Uncle Drew improves with another spring and summer of practice.
Chuck is only a junior, unless he enters the draft he will return.
I've heard Torrian is very high on Terrell Edmunds intangible/instinctual aspects.
Tremaine started against Georgia Tech (and got pulled after one quarter obviously), but I think he has a lot of upside and kinda hope he doesn't outgrow LB. Bud seems to like him
As long as we get the ball to begin the game, we won't need much of a defense. Offense will score TDs every possession. Therefore, we won't need a punter at all =:]
Somebody get Drew Harris on the phone...../s
Now we're about to see what Lawson, Jackson are made of. If they welcome the competition, VT is the best place for them. A redshirt for any of the QB is not a bad thing to learn Fuente's new system and be a two year starter in the future.
Lawson has nothing to fear of, he was a tattooed 4* as well. Let the best man win the starting job.
You are correct, more options the better.
Shoot, if anything it takes the pressure off of him to win the starting job next year. He can redshirt, see how things go his r-soph year, and then the job is wide open to be his for his last 2 years if he doesn't take it before then. Not a terrible deal.
Thats how I see it. Good opportunity, especially since any transfer would cost a year of eligibility anyways. (unless he goes down a level)
Redshirt/emergency QB during his first year in Fuente's system, Be the primary backup behind Evans his RS Sophomore year, have 2 years of eligibility and two years in the system under his belt to make his NFL push.
More importantly, he will have plenty of time to get his degree and become a two-year starter in a high scoring offense.
i foresee a future where VT QBs will make NFL rosters on a regular basis...
So what you're saying is VT will become a fuente of QB talent?
We had three last year, I guess currently two. That's probably pretty good. Schools that I don't think have two QBs on active rosters: tenn, Texas, bama, psu, osu, wisky, Clemson, Fsu, lsu, UGA, miss, miss st, Baylor, tcu, Nebraska, Stanford, Oregon.......
Yea VT has 3 NFL QB's getting pay checks this year. Not many schools can say that.
And one could say Virginia Tech has four former quarterbacks in the NFL getting pay checks. Vick, Taylor, Thomas, and a coach named Bruce Arians.
Wisconsin - Russell Wilson, Scott Tolzien
Some of those schools have 2:
FSU - EJ Manuel, Jameis Winston
LSU- Matt Flynn & Zach Mettenberger
UGA - Matt Stafford & Aaron Murray
Baylor - RG3, Bryce Petty
Oregon - Kellen Clemens, Marcus Mariota
But yeah, in the grand scheme of things, there aren't a ton of schools with 2+ QBs in the NFL.
FSU also has Ponder.
USC has 4: Barkley, Cassel, Leinart, and Palmer
Leinart works in the studio for Fox on college football.
Mark Sanchez is USC too.
Ponder was let go this week, not currently in the NFL, unless someone picked him up.
Russell Wilson is half Wisconsin half NC State in my mind.
I thought of Wilson and thought about Glennon2. Assuming he's out of the league, but in my mind, I think of Wilson as a Pack.
Wilson, Glennon, and Rivers ask have ties to NCSU.
I spy a Swype-o
QBU! DBU!
I think Stroman will be the first one to take full advantage of Fuente's screen packages on offense.
Strohman should focus on special teams and defense. We have enough incoming WR that there is little to no need to play him on offense
Strohman should focus on defense. Someone else should be taught to return punts.
Completely agree. Hes a hokie so i love him but i cant help but think,"how many negative yards is this return gonna be when he gets the ball?"
This is a head scratcher for me. I thought he looked dangerous as hell his first year - just a hair away from breaking a few of them - and expected him to light it up this year.
Huge disappointment...no other way to say it.
There's a new Shibest in town, who will be cleaning up these special teams mysteries.
I could see that. Stroman has plenty of speed but lacks size. At 168 lbs he's not knocking anyone over. On a screen with a good block he could get to the outside and burn.
I know a certain UVA QB that might disagree.
That was an impressive hit.
The overreaction from Timecop and his sideline was even more impressive.
It was a legal hit, but Stroman did come close to knocking him into the first row of the stands.
Dipshit shouldn't have jumped!
True, but he should have run out of bounds. He got hit because he didn't get out of bounds quickly enough, leaving Stroman no choice.
But can Stroman make these hits against FBS teams?
I just wish he could run forward after catching a punt like that!
New coaching technique for Coach Shibest: "Pretend the ball is Matt Johns. Run that hard at it."
DeShaun Jackson finds Stroman's reverse return skills amateur in nature. Plus, who runs in reverse and forgets to fumble?
too soon... i'm not ready to laugh about that play yet...
As a Skins fan, I have to laugh, otherwise I'd go insane.
Make sure this .gif is available at all times.
I love we are bringing JUCO guys in, now we need some OLs.
Speaking of I saw on Twitter that mike Arnold verbaled to FSU.
Not a big surprise. 247 has been saying for a long time he wasn't coming back. Would love another OL or two in this class though
With this transfer I see Evans as the starter. Now it gets interesting. Does Lawson redshirt if he doesn't win the job? I would think that would be best for the long-term plan. Motley would remain the backup and Durkin? would be 3rd string if he doesn't move to TE. By Lawson redshirting, he will have 2-3 years as the starter depending on if/when Evans gets drafted.
I would be concerned about Motley being the backup. Motley showed a lot of heart and seems like a good person. The issue is that he was basically an unrecruited Wing-T QB recruited by a wide receivers coach (Kevin Sherman) that was eliminated in the last coaching overhaul. Maybe Fuente's staff can do more with Motley and Durkin.
Fuente has a history with Wing-T high school QB's that weren't highly recruited. A guy named Paxton Lynch ran a wing T offense in high school too.

Is it time for spring ball yet?

The relationship is getting serious!!
I....I can't believe it took us this long to get here
Usually I know a lot more about a 4* recruit before they commit, so this is unusual for me to be playing catch up like this. I like it

Dude looks awesome, but the receivers won't be that open in the ACC.
Yeah, those are like 7on7 highlights.
The Million Dollar Question: Does anyone know how he actually stacks up to Lawson or am I just going to have to wait this one out?
Evans looks to be a little bit better of a passer. More accurate and certainly very versatile in the types of passes I see him executing. Also like his decision making. He has a couple more years of playing under his belt so that is also a plus. Lawson has a little taller frame which could be an advantage and he looks to be a physical nightmare. I think the key here is experience. I think Fuente would be hard pressed to throw Lawson in there when he has two other Quarterbacks with more playing experience. Just my take on it but unless if Lawson develops and picks up the playbook very quickly, I doubt he gets the call in September.
This is great news, but we need a solid O-line to pretect any QB. I fear a seriously talented QB lose his edge because he's getting pummelled all the time (like in the several recent years!). Keep it going Coach Fuente!.
Well everyone more or less comes back next year at least
I'm not sure that means much. We need 5 - 10 Wyatt Tellers not just 2. I'm calling Conte and Nijman half Tellers. McLaughlin has slipped and it's not clear that the other guys will develop much more. Gallo did a good job for a first year starter. We'll see. Maybe our gorilla of a new OL coach will help.
Nijman got better and can be a very good OL. Don't forget about Austin Clark.
Fuente is pushing for some JUCO OL hard though. Next year we will have a better pool of high school OL prospects
Seriously, Nijman was a true freshman playing a brand new position. I thought he did pretty well all things considered
It's a shame that Alston Smith didn't pan out. I wonder if it was really worth moving him to offense.
Wasn't VT Smith's only 1-A offer?
Was interested to see if Jerod's JUCO had any other players. I was watching the film of TJ Henson his right tackle (currently soft commit to ECU since they fired Ruffin McNeil) who had a definite mean streak and stays on his blocks. He was also voted All-Conference while Jerod was Conference Player of the Year.
Have no idea if he's what the Vance Vice is looking for in an offensive linemen, but could definitely provide some quality depth along the interior and maybe right tackle.
Here's his Huddle film:
Hudl Film
Here's a link to some other players on Jerod's team from Scout:
http://www.scout.com/topic/2016-football-prospects?s=429¤tTeam=Trinity%20Valley&league=JUCO
The thing I like about this guy, his Twitter account is full of teammates congratulating him and encouraging him to do big things. I think that says a lot about his leadership in the locker room.
Can someone fill me in on why his brother has zero stars? Do they live in the middle of nowhere Texas? Is he playing against schools that have so few players they have to play both sides of the ball?
I don't get it. He's like a mirror image of his brother on tape, and I get it, you can't rank a kid from tape but it's not like you dont watch it and immediately think, "how has this kid gone under the radar?"
http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2648629/caleb-evans
I guess the same can be said for Sam Rogers, being from Mechanicsville but a little older, everyone knew about him and was surprised he didn't have more offers.
Here's a story about him and his family http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-news/best-southwest/headlines/20151203-bishop-dunne-quarterback-latest-in-long-line-of-athlete-achievers-watches-over-little-brother.ece
He didn't start until this year. He was 2nd string behind Micah Simon who is now at BYU.
While reading that story about all those younger brothers and the fact that the family is obviously gifted with athletic ability, I got a Fuller sensation.
If it last more than 6 hours consult a doctor.
It has lasted for Vinnie years.
That's a great story, thanks for posting. I hope we can take Caleb as well.
Is Caleb going to walk-on?
I believe so
Is it pronounced like Jared or Je-rod?
We've had much more luck on QB's with "Rod" in their name so I'm hoping its the former and not the latter.
It's pronounced "Kevin". The j is silent.
There is supposed to be an accent mark on the e, so I'd say Je-rod.
So like jay-rod
This possible name combination of jayron and tyrod gets me excited for a mega beast offensive and defensive player
Jayron + Tyrod = Jerod
Name triangle.
Illuminati confirmed.
OMG ^^^This^^^ Legs!
One of the best parts is that he uses "to whom" correctly...I like him already!
Yep. He was at the AFA, so he's a bona fide smart guy.
Really great breakdown of the QB battle from our friends over at 247 Sports:
Breaking Down VTs QB Competition for 2016
Sparknotes version
Motley Pros: experience, athleticism
Cons: reading defenses, accuracy, consistency
Lawson Pros: athleticism, size, speed, arm strength
Cons: playbook understanding
Evans Pros: athleticism, size, speed, arm strength, accuracy
Cons: lack of experience vs real opponents
Jackson will likely redshirt
playbook understanding for Lawson is a little meh of an excuse, they all have a brand new coach/brand new playbook/brand new lingo THUS everyone has this con.
Well, judging from Loeffler's comments in the past 2 weeks it sounds like the only reason he was kept off the field during Brewer's injury was because he had a hard time with the mental aspect like getting the playbook down. To me it sounds like it will take him longer to absorb Fuente's playbook than say Motley or Evans. SO, I hope if he isn't going to compete for playing time this year he will redshirt and have 2 years of starter time if Evans does emerge as QB1 by Fall.
Do you know how rare it is for a true freshmen non early enrolle to see the field with a full playbook in his head? People expect these kids to come in and get on the field first thing and know every play its just not that easy.
I completely agree. People often have expectations of Freshman QBs that are not founded in reality. But Loeffler wasn't speaking in terms of the beginning of the year. When he spoke about it sounds like it is still an ongoing climb for Lawson, which is fine and to be expected of almost all Freshmen. There will be an adjustment for all involved because no one has a spread offense background but you gotta figure Evans with some college experience, be it at the JUCO level, might pick up the playbook quicker and would be seeing the field more.
Let's also remember back to last year when Brewer came in and took the starting job without the benefit of the offseason to learn the playbook. We ran a very limited playbook because of that, as well.
It's not just picking up the playbook. It's the whole package of mentally being a QB.
In fact, Loeffler never specifically mentioned the playbook, he referred to the mental part of being a QB. I took that to mean a broad spectrum of things ranging from practice habits, knowledge of the playbook, leadership, attitude, focus, study habits, behaving the right way on & off the field. In his limited action I got hints that Lawson was something of a free-lancer who always looked to keep the ball on the option and always looked for deep passes regardless of the play call or proper read. He wanted a highlight reel play and he wanted it now. Then he just seemed to have a lackadaisical / 'whatever' kind of attitude on the sideline for much of the season, including a lack of urgency on the field and a lack of interaction on the sidelines. Not characteristics a backup QB should be presenting if they want more playing time. IMO he checked out mentally when he realized he wasn't going to be the starter or even the first QB off the bench. Maybe it was that combined with being a college freshman combined with being homesick, but whatever it was he needs to shake it off and get on the right track if he wants to be QB1. (BTW I think these are typical problems for young QB... one reason its so difficult for a true FR QB to be starter game 1)
Lucky for Lawson he will have a clean slate with Fuente and Cornelsen and an open competition for QB1 this spring. I just hope some of Brewer's intangibles rubbed of on Lawson.
Wow that's crazy. Unless our O-line sees some pretty big improvements next year he will need to be ready to see that trend change as he makes the transition to the ACC. Just ask Michael Brewer...
What is this "Throw The Ball Away" strategy you speak of?
It's the natural reaction when Dadi got near the opposing QB these past couple of years.
No I think that is called "Shit my pants" strategy, it typically is run on a 2 count
It's the self-defense poop. Self defeces

"never been sacked at the JUCO level"..............
Think about that for a minute! Does he have any OL to bring with him?
Didn't we hear that Brewer never threw an interception in college (games or spring ball) when he transferred?
FWIW he turned out to be a good and tough player, but he did throw his fair share if INTs.
That's because he got into a conference that actually plays defense!
Any #sauces have any info on Caleb?? Reading that the word is that he's going walk on? Any confirmation or further (legit) information on that rumor??
He's weighing his options (smaller FBS schools, FCS schools, walkon opportunities), but right now it isn't out of the question that he'll walk on at Tech. I think he has a recruited walkon spot.
My quick take on the QB battle- my eyes and my ears tell me that if Evans wasn't part of the mix, Motley would win a quarterback battle with Lawson. Lawson has tremendous upside, but he was given every opportunity to step up and take the job and Motley performed better in practice. When Lawson got repetitions, he didn't make good use of them. He was tentative in the read option game and inaccurate with his passing. As I said before the season (and I was berated for it), the only reason Lawson should not have been redshirted was if he was clearly the top quarterback in fall camp. Otherwise, if he had been better than Motley he should have been the emergency QB and shirted unless there was an injury. If he wasn't, he should have been redshirted with no chance of getting the shirt pulled.
Evans changes the mix. Lawson has the physical tools to compete with Evans. Evans looked MUCH more assertive and efficient on film. Spring ball certainly will have it's share of storylines.
After reading this interview with Evans' JUCO coach, I am certainly excited.
http://www.roanoke.com/sports/columns_and_blogs/blogs/andy_bitter_virgin...
My thoughts when reading this earlier...
"Alright they're comparing him to Cam. This is going to be great.... Wait a second. I've heard all this before..."
Sooo remember when everybody was saying this...
Yea so I'm definitely on the train, but I will at least attempt to temper my expectations.
Yeah, the media love the easy narrative of "is [player X] the new [player Y]?" So I don't read much into that. Great, physical attributes are nice. But I really take away from this that Evans is very athletic, definitely smart, and a leader that has the camaraderie of his team. All excellent qualities. This will be an interesting spring for sure.
TO be fair, LT would have continued to do great things if we didn't take a huge nose dive in offensive talent after 2011
it's impossible to know this for sure. What we do know is that with an NFL caliber O-line and skill players around him, LT still couldn't manage to stay in the league. He's currently on the Dolphins practice squad, if I'm not mistaken. There was a lot of potential there but for some reason it's not working out for him. I had hoped that he would make it with some proper coaching in the league but I just don't think that's going to happen at this stage. It's too bad, really, because he was terrific in every other aspect of the game. A good leader and fighter who never gave up on the team and always carried himself well. He was a great representative for VT and I'll always appreciate him for that.
I saw him on TV during the Dolphins-Giants game last night, he was in street clothes.
Great Article, I encourage everyone to read this.
After watching the film, reading this article, and thinking about the readiness of some other Juco QB's to play right away, it's hard for me to imagine this guy not winning the job in the spring. I'm tempering expectations, but I'm certainly on the verge of being very excited.
Evans lobs it into the corner for Hodges! Touchdown Tech!

Choo Chooo CHOOOOOOOOO
All ABOARD, Hype train will be leaving in 10 minutes!
Does anyone know if his name is pronounced "Jay-rod" or is it said like "Jared?" The accent on the 'e' throws me off.
Jah-rod, I believe.
Just listened to an interview with him on YouTube where it's pronounced "Juh-Rod". Jay-Rod sounds so much cooler.
College Football's Top 25 Impact JUCO Transfers for 2016
Three QBs are listed in the #1 spot, with JEvans being listed first.
it's more like a top 40 list to be fair.
Ironically/interestingly/incidentally, WVU's defensive backs are #9 on this list.
We just hired their CBs coach today.
Oh, and the Athlon JUCO QBs feature article has JEvans listed first...
Followed by the new heir apparent at Memphis...
And coming in at #3? Some new kid at UMass named Andrew Ford.
Small world.
Impressive of him to throw for 23 touchdowns on only 1,700 yards
Probably a bad conversion from the metric system.
Just shows to me the lack of quality depth in the JUCO ranks - and why VT would be wise to not shift too much focus to recruiting JUCO players.
I can't be the only one who thought something bad happened when this thread popped back up to the top of the Tracker
Yeah, I freaked out for a second when I saw it back up again.
