TJ Jackson Follows Love of Football, Fondness of "Hitting People" to Virginia Tech

The Hokies added a massive offensive tackle to their 2016 recruiting class.

For Cumberland offensive tackle TJ Jackson, playing college football will soon be a reality, a few years after he discovered his one true love.

"I didn't want to play, but once I played my first time, I fell in love. Football was the sport I wanted to play on the collegiate level. ... I like hitting people."

Jackson gave his verbal commitment to play at Virginia Tech on Monday night. Jackson announced his decision on his Instagram.

"Yesterday afternoon I was in class, and they called me to the office and I got on the phone with them, and they offered me a full ride," Jackson said. So I was like, 'Man, this is crazy.' I talked to my parents, and I committed last night."

Virginia Tech had Jackson on its board prior to the announcement of head coach Justin Fuente — he visited Tech unofficially over the summer and for the Duke game — but the Hokies' interest in Jackson ramped up over the last month. Fuente and offensive line coach Vance Vice spearheaded Jackson's recruitment.

"He was a real nice guy," Jackson said of Vice, who observed Jackson's basketball practice last week. "What he says is what he means. I really like him as a coach. He treated me like we were friends. He's a real cool guy. He gets you as a person, and not just as a player."

"Amazing," is how Jackson summarized his initial impression of Fuente, and Fuente's reputation for player development helped secure Jackson's pledge.

"[At Memphis] he took players that nobody knew about really and molded them into stars. Coming from Cumberland where nobody knows where that's at, it's pretty nice to get to talk to someone like him, and I'm just thankful for him to actually be interested in me as a player."

Even at 6-9, Jackson slipped under the radar of most colleges. And that's for good reason. His senior year at Cumberland was his first devoted in earnest to learning offensive tackle. As a svelter sophomore in the 6-5, 250 range he played d-tackle, d-end and even some tight end at Fuqua School (Farmville, Virginia). He then transferred Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, North Carolina) to focus on basketball before arriving at Cumberland.

"Being under the radar was kind of a blessing and a curse," said Jackson who also received scholarship offers from N.C. State, Norfolk State, and VMI. "Nobody really knew about me, but I knew my talent could take me real far with my size. When Virginia Tech found out about me, I was pretty amazed. 'How did they find out about me here?' Now I have to show everybody who I am."

To accomplish that, Jackson knows he'll have to "hit the weights" and absorb Vice's every instruction.

"I want to get stronger, and [get better] technique wise," Jackson said. "I was always blessed as a big guy to move real quick. I'm a fast guy for my size."

"TJ has exceptional agility for a young man of his size," said Cumberland head coach Edgar Knapp via email. "He moves incredibly well. It allows him to be very active at OT. His reach is very long and combined with his speed he becomes a powerful blocker. Because TJ has really only been playing football for 3 years, the intensive coaching he'll receive at the next level will improve on his technique across the board."

"When you look at a guy who is 6'9" tall and 335 pounds, he immediately became our left tackle," Knapp added. "He has long arms and agility and we knew he would project out at that position at the next level. We wanted him to get as much exposure at the position as possible. He has great hands and could likely play TE."

Even though Jackson is destined for a career in the trenches, he has no issue with playing a snap or two at tight end — his "dream position".

"I wouldn't mind if they threw in one play, you know, I'd be happy," Jackson said. "I'll score for them, if they want it, I'll score it."

That's a serious claim round these parts.

He's hoops and can move well too?? Transferring 3-times definitely kept this kid under the radar

Kid's big. In his highlights he pretty much just uses his size to push outmatched defenders 10+ yards down the field. It will be interesting to see how he holds up against someone like Ken Ekanem or Tim Settle in practice. Also didn't see him at all in pass protection, only running highlights.

Haha. Thanks for the info. With my first on the way I guess I need to become familiar with these types of things.

Nope you have a ways to go before that interesting stuff. You will start with some, if not all of these, in the first year which will all be on repeat non stop till your dreams are consumed and you have a strong urge to just go to Disney and nut punch Goofy.

My kids still love Yo Gabba Gabba...I don't mind watching that one with them.

All that I get from watching Yo Gabba Gabba is that someone is doing some serious drugs:

Curious george is the only one i recognize but im sure ill be familiar with rest sooner than later.

Don't forget Wonderpets.

Congrats! Yeah, but first it's gonna be Baby Einstein, and then Dora the Explorer and Diego, then the kid might get into Dragons (or whatever is on at that time). So you have some time.

Word of advice; Watch what your kid is watching (or watch it before the kid does). Pay attention to the behavior of the characters on the show, a lot of shows out there are teaching bad behaviors. I'll use Jessie as an example as we let our boys watch it for a while, but once we realized some things decided it was better not to let them watch it.

On this show there is only one adult, the butler who is always trying to get out of work and is constantly abused by the kids. The person "in charge" is a teenager who is flighty, at best, and can barely take care of herself, let alone 4 kids. The parents only show up once in a while to dump gifts on the kids and disappear. The youngest girl is a brat with a mouth. Not a great show for kids to be learning from.

There's a lot of shows out there that either don't have parents in them, or the parents are idiots and the kids seem to be the ones 'really' in charge. Either that or they show bad behavior with little to no consequences. There are good shows out there, you just have to be careful and diligent. Like I said, monitor what they watch, we made some mistakes, but we try to always watch a few episodes of a show before giving full approval.

Sorry for the rant, and congrats again.

Thanks! Sounds like sage advice.

Congrats! Yeah, but first it's gonna be Baby Einstein, and then Dora the Explorer and Diego, then the kid might get into Dragons (or whatever is on at that time).

I am so thankful that my kids never really got into Dora the Explorer. (nothing necessarily wrong with the show, other than being annoying) They loved Little Einsteins. I'm kinda disappointed that they seem to have outgrown that one, and it's not really on during reasonable watching hours any more, because I kinda enjoyed watching that one with them.

Slow your roll, Diego. Nobody out here trying to get yelled at about some damn fluffy rats. Avoid him at all costs. Now, when they get old enough for Phineas and Ferb, that is some quality television.

Mine are 2 and 5, and don't really ask for P&F, but they'll watch it when I put it on. And quite frankly, they're gonna watch it whether they like it or not. I paid for the darn TV and I love that show.

I grew up watching The Simpsons. Tuned in for that first episode on December 17th, 1989. "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.

On the other hand, my wife has been watching Wonderpets, Backyardigans, and Phineas & Ferb for years. Our daughter is 8 weeks old.

I'm hoping we can select a highly curated and limited TV viewing experience for her well being and our sanity. I'm sure she'll pick up on some garbage though.

Teen Titans Go is my favorite show of everything my son watches.

HokieSpider

Is that show really for kids? I was watching it the other day (42, no kids) and they had a series of Hulk Hogan references, which you would only get if you were around in the mid 80's.

I imagine they do that sort of stuff to keep the parents engaged...

And I like that you like hitting people. Welcome aboard. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Santa Fuente and company just keep piling on the gifts.

Santa Fuente ROCKS! Keep it up coach and we have a very happy New Year!

I hope that he catches a TD pass at some point in his career. Bring him as a TE on a goal line play and I bet he'd be wide open.

Sounds like McMilian will have a great time following those blocks. In the films, the running back rarely followed the beast. Go figure.

Wow what a day for him, congrats. Gotta be a hell of a feeling to get that call to the office. Got some work to do but is definitely pretty quick for his size. With hard work, I dont see any reason why he wont get plenty of playing time during his career here.

I like hitting people

Fuente: Think you got a future in football?

Jackson: Heck no! I figured as long I'm going to be in school, I might as well hit some people while I'm at it.

This might be some of the funniest high school film of a recruit I have ever seen. I mean he is blocking his guy back a good 15 yards on some of these run plays. If I was in HS and had to line up against him I would seriously consider telling the coach "No thanks".

It's like watching The Blind Side after Michael Oher finally figures out how to block. Only thing missing is seeing him carry a guy the length of the field and out the back of the end zone.

He definitely looks like a project but he seems eager to work at it and learn which is all you can ask for. He is agile for his size but is that agile enough to slow down some of the best DEs in the country? That is my main concern with 0 pass protection highlights.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Why are there like 4 people besides refs standing in the middle of the field on most of these plays? Look like coaches in the backfield and then out past the safety's?

Considering it was only in the film from one specific game, it could have possibly been a scrimmage/preseason game against another high school. I know my high school used to have one of those games every season. That's just my guess.

After evans' commitment is announced everyone starts asking for O lineman. A day or 2 later now this. Clearly Mr. Fuente is reading TKP.

*Er hem* now if only we could get some linebackers... and maybe a pay raise at work?

Coach Fuente, don't be a Littlepage and stalk TKP without donating, please.

Careful you don't break your arm trying to pat yourselves on the back. ;-) It appears Coach is quite sharp and knows how to get the talent he needs and wants. ...and we get to enjoy it all!

Seeing that picture of him next his mom makes me think he's probably an only child. Dude was probably my size in utero.

Looking at them together she's a pretty sizable woman herownself. In an athletic and dignified, attractive way, of course. Glad to have them in the family.

YASSSS. Bring all of the big offensive linemen to us. ALL OF THEM.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Having rarely to never watched OLINE film with a critical eye, here's my take:

Pro's:

  • Weight
  • He likes to hit people
  • Above average wingspan
  • Great motor

Cons:

  • I see no pass pro in his film
  • Not particularly quick off the snap
  • Not particularly quick in the field of play

Who knows what he'll become after "GTA: Vance Vice City" gets aholt of him. If he's smart and coach-able, it will probably end well for everyone.

Welcome to TJ!

"How you doin', Randy?"

Serious Question: Does his official height include or not include his hair?

TJ has been given 3* by 247. We just got better. :-)

I'm curious, was it the fact that we offered that gave him the 3 stars or did someone on 247 go "oh shit lemme check this guy out real quick" after he committed?

I am curious how this rating thing works.

Keep calm, Gobble on

TJ Juckson was in the East West bowl

I can give a little more information on TJ. I know him from when he was a sophomore at Fuqua. Fuqua(formerly Prince Edward Academy) is a small private school in Farmville, VA. I saw all of his football and basketball games in 2013, my daughter is a cheerleader. He started all year at DE and TE in football and center in basketball as a sophomore. His junior year he transferred to Wesleyan in NC because he wanted to concentrate on basketball. This year he came back to VA and was going to go back to Fuqua. The administration at the school had change and also the scholorship/financial aid program so he ended up at Cumberland at the public school. Hope this helps explain a little better about why 3 different schools in 3 years.

I will not try to give you an evaluation of TJ, there are much better people on TKP than me to do that. I can only comment on how he played 2 years ago. He was a good athlete and quick. He was a great TE! Of course he was only about 250 then. He did not face the competition like you see in 757 or NOVA but the year he played for Fuqua they lost the State VISAA(Va Independent School Athletic Asso) Division 4 championship on the last play of the game.

The one thing I can say is TJ is a great kid. He comes from a good family and I have no doubt will make a great Hokie.

He was an awesome kid to interview. Very down to Earth and happy.

Obviously this is low level competition but this dude is an absolute beast! He is in the backfield on defense and blocks 10 yards downfield on O. Shows a mean streak. Reminds me of Bobby Massey who committed to VT early unranked, decommitted and went to Ole Miss and the NFL. Guessing TJ also went to no camps etc so stayed under the radar.....excited about this guy.
