Incoming freshmen can buy student season football tickets

The little shits don't have to go through the lottery anymore. Thoughts?

WHAT?!

They better show up in force at every home game.

I DON'T LIKE IT AT ALL

Lack of a Thursday night game and a schedule without many exciting games leads me to believe this is because of a lack of sales. Also, many students grew complacent with winning 10 games so now after a bad season, they would rather stay at home and get hammered than go to the games and throw their paper airplanes. For that, I'm actually happy. I hope we start to move back towards a rabid fanbase soon

If someone around me throws a paper airplane during a game and cheers for said airplane when they should be supporting the Hokies, I should be allowed to kill them.

Not kill. Just severely maim.

BOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Pay your dues. On a side note I know that Georgia has a program where students get free student tickets however if you skip more than two games your tickets are taken away from you. Would love to see a system like that implemented at VT.

Don't ever let the pressure exceed the pleasure. - Joe Maddon

I'd like to see that system as well. In addition, the more loyalty you show should give you better seats or something.

I'M COMPLAING ABOUT THIS AT 4:15 ON ESPNBLACKSBURG.COM. I WILL TALK IN ALL CAPS AND NO STUDENT IS SAFE.

Darn missed it by one year! But the lottery wasn't too difficult, I was able to secure a ticket to every game with the help of some engineers haha. Like y'all said looking forward to some loud fans!

This doesn't bother me at all, even though I did have to go through the lottery system when I was a Freshman. This is probably happening because they couldn't sell out seats to the alum. I'm also sure that the 17-18 year olds willing to spend $80 on season tickets will be much louder. IMO the more students in the stands, the better.

@HaydenDubya

I'm fine with it as long as all the upperclassmen had a chance to purchase them. Everybody that entered the season ticket lottery should be offered the option to purchase them before they offer it to Freshman. I'll check with my buddy in the ticket office to see if that's how it went down.

UPDATE: I didn't realize there is no lottery for student season tickets like basketball. I never had to deal with any of this stuff.

The Run Down: Freshman can purchase their season tickets during orientation. Every upperclassmen should've already purchased their season tickets by then, so I've got no problem with it. More revenue for the Athletic Department

@Fightin_Gobbler

Go Hokies

Go Falcons

I'm not going to start a riot over it, but I don't like it. They should have to go through the lottery like all other freshmen did so they learn to appreciate the value of a ticket. I would obviously rather have freshmen season ticket holders in the stands as opposed to empty seats. It makes sense that there are more season tickets available with our lackluster schedule, which I also don't like. To recap: I hate everything.

You right now < cheese

Are transfers and grad students lumped into this? My brother will be a first year grad student this year and he was under the impression he could not buy them.

This.

Rip his freaking head off!

This is a great example of how our sports marketing department sucks. Instead of continuting with the lottery and creating a sense of anticipation and demand (and then just awarding tickets to everyone who entered the lottery) they make it obvious that there's a lack of demand this season, by annoucing no lottery is neccesary... which only serves to reduce demand further.

Absolutely correct. Clearly someone in the marketing department isn't to sharp with the whole marketing thing.

I don't really understand all the negative backlash. The lottery sucks.

Now there will be some freshman in the stands, standing, yelling their lungs out, and staying the entire game that might not have been afforded the chance in a lottery system.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

I don't care as long as they have to stand at the top of the South Endzone. I don't want them taking seats away from upperclassmen in the North. Sorry I'm not sorry.

Also, make every one of them make a profile on TKP and take a 100 question quiz on important dates, people and plays in Virginia Tech history. Bonus points are awarded for successfully explaining why Stiney's 3rd and long screen plays sucked.

After waiting 3 years to get into North last year, I was severely disappointed. All I saw was Greek life leaving early and paying no attention to the game. East student section in my opinion is far rowdier, livelier, and a better time unfortunately. Seems to me like a good time to try something new. North against UVA was pitiful and couldn't tell you how many UVA students were in there. Been going to every game since 99 season and I've never seen anything even approach that.

I sat in the North my Sophomore year and then in the East my Junior year. IMO the East stands were more fun. I had a much better view of the game, more people were actually interested in the game, and last but not least, it was much easier to drink in the stands. I honestly hope I get seats in the East for my r-Junior year (5 year plan).

@HaydenDubya

I loved the view from the north endzone my sophomore year, but I agree with the rest of your points. Fans are much more dedicated and loud in the East Stands (however the entire student section could use some work honestly) and it's way easier to drink. My seats from a visual perspective in East sucked though. Zero depth perception if your stuck in the corner as everything is happening diagonally, and you don't get to see holes develop like you do in North.

SO MANY UVA FANS! and once i saw a kid wearing a wvu jersey.

all maroon everything

Yeah I hate that! I don't understand why people invite their friends from rival schools into the student section. It's like inviting a Steelers fan to go to a Ravens game with me.

I have skins season tickets so I can see the Giants.

My Wahoo friend invites me to the game when it's in Charlottesville.

Not sure what's wrong with it.

In fact, I went to the Indiana and UVA game years ago. Had all tech stuff on. I got a lot of props from Hoos fans. The only people that talked shit were some IU lacrosse guys who were drunk.

Let's look at the bright side. I've heard (even though I haven't been to Blacksburg since 2006) that the students in the current student section aren't like we used to be. Whether it be the abundance of paper airplanes, the inability to comprehend and recite our cheers at the right time, or the inability to recognize a key play, the word is they're not pulling their weight.

Maybe getting a slew of fresh new faces in those stands is exactly what we need. If they bought the tickets (assuming they'll be in the student section), hopefully that means they WANT to be there. Hopefully freshman orientation got a few thousand of them well educated in when and how to cheer. Hopefully this will bring us back to being one of the most intimidating road games an opponent can play.

Or maybe I'm hoping too much. I guess we'll see.

It's hard to be intimidating for a noon kickoff vs. Western Carolina or Marshall.

Hopefully everything goes right and we get a Saturday night game vs. UNC. Gotta show those recruits a night game in Blacksburg, somehow.

With enough Bourbon, anything is possible; even a nooner.

Logan 3:16

Just to clarify, when you say nooner, you mean a football game at noon right? Just want to make sure context, because I want to be full strength for my nooners.

I feel the same way. I've been disappointed in upperclassmen over the last few years. Get some kids in there that want to be in there yelling, not ones that are just there to bro out, throw paper airplanes and bro out some more.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

You haven't been to Blacksburg since 2006?!?!? *gasp* You are WAYYY overdue for a visit sir!

@AMB4VT

I went from the 1998 game vs Pitt to the 2011 game vs Arkansas State without seeing a game in Lane Stadium. I am not sure why but I prefer going to road games, especially when they say ACC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME on the field.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Well guys....the burg is growing. We are getting a CineBowl with an IMAX theater soon. Plus you guys will have to see the new video board. :)

@AMB4VT

I was tempted to go to the Pitt game last year, as it is only like an hour and a half away. I made the decision not to go the morning of. Not like there weren't more tickets available. Glad I didn't go, though. Would have been a wasted trip.

I was in NOVA when we played Cincy at the FedEx last year, too, but I also didn't go to that one. Also glad I didn't go to that one.

I'm now holding you responsible for those loses.

Eh, I'll take it. Just don't blame #anyofthefullers

Yeah def be glad you skipped those two games. They were so painful to watch. In fact I can't remember which one but I skipped the 4th quarter. Couldn't take it anymore. And I NEVER stop watching a game. Here's to hoping we never have to go through another season like last year! Be seriously. Get your ass up to the Lane. SOON! :)

@AMB4VT

What no camping out the night before? Weak sauce...

There hasn't been camping out for tickets in years. When I was a freshman in 07, they had already instituted the lottery where you enter online for tickets, and if you win you just have to swing by Cassell sometime during the week to pick it up.

But honestly I wouldn't camp out for tickets. I would probably go pay $40 and buy some instead, so I'm glad they did away with that.

Rip his freaking head off!

you must have had a better college budget than i did. Camping out to get the free tickets was much better than buying a ticket. And I used to pick up other people's tickets too, so we could sit together. My payment for waiting for them was that they would bring me food and drinks. it was a great experience.

Last year of camping was my freshman year in 2001. Better off, IMO, since the camping heavily favored the Greeks who sent their pledges 1 week (or more) early to get in line.

@VTimHokie85

"Exit light..."

I was a freshman last year and I am not a fan of giving freshman season tickets. I felt like the lottery was a rite of passage and a way to pay your dues before being able to buy season tickets. I hope the freshman season tickets are at the top of the south end zone.

Has a man open...caught! Danny Coale!

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Is there no lottery at all now? So if a freshman decides not to purchase the season tickets, then they have no way of getting tickets other than something like ebay or craigslist?

i would imagine the lottery still exists for everyone who doesnt have season tickets because i had some friends last year who forgot to buy season tickets and could still enter the lottery each week.
