Hokies Offer 2016 QB / Athlete Ty Pigrome

Virginia Tech extended a scholarship offer to 2016 Alabama (Clay-Chalkville) dual-threat quarterback / athlete Tyrrell Pigrome.

The 247Sports Composite ranks Pigrome as a 3-star prospect. He won the Gatorade Player of the Year in Alabama.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior quarterback has led the Cougars to a 14-0 record and a berth in the Class 6A state championship game against Spanish Fort High, scheduled for Dec. 4. At the time of his selection, Pigrome had completed 161-of-242 passes for 2,866 yards and 41 touchdowns while rushing for 1,225 yards and 17 touchdowns on 138 carries. The 2014 Class 6A Back of the Year and AL.com Player of the Year, he accounted for 18 touchdowns in the Cougars' first four playoff games.

"Ty Pigrome is what makes their offense go," said Matt Glover, head coach of Pinson Valley High. "He is the best player in the state of Alabama, and I don't believe second place is even close. They have the best offense that I have ever coached against, and he is the reason they are that good."

Pigrome reportedly worked out for Memphis over the summer, and his coach Jerry Hood told AL.com after Missouri offered him as an athlete he would consider switching to another position at the collegiate level .

"They were very clear on that they were offering him as an athlete which I appreciated," Hood said. "Ty and I have talked about what would happen if a Missouri or a Georgia or some of those big schools offered him as an athlete and wanted him to play a different position. He loves quarterback, but he has come to the conclusion he wants to find a good fit for himself as a person and then we will go from there. To get an offer like this from Missouri very early in the process of his senior year recruiting is a big deal for Ty."

That kid runs very very well. Makes good cuts and explodes through the hole. Seems like a good candidate to be a RB if QB doesn't work out due to his size.

Slot reciever likely

With so many accolades, I'm trying to figure out why this kid is only 3 stars.

I can't be the only person who read the title and thought "a defensive tackle/quarterback?", can I?

Haha, I used to think that. It would be a beastly combo.

That's what I thought as well. We need a better way to denote Dual-Threat QB.

I like how 247sports handles the distinction on their site:

PRO QB
DUAL QB

I also thought the DT stood for Defensive Tackle until I saw his height and weight. :)

Go Hokies!

I feel like 2T-QB would have been the better choice, but I agree just spelling out DUAL or PRO is best.

Nope, I was about to make the same comment myself. I was thinking it might be someone like our original Wild Turkey qb, a real big boy who could throw...

I always thought he was under used. Very talented but most of the time you would forget he was on the field. He always seemed to do good things when he got the ball though.

I did too but it didn't register until you pointed it out. I was like "ha ha, that's funny...[scrolls up]...oh...yeah, I did that too."

dual-thread quarterback

QBs these days are so advanced that they can target multiple WRs at the same time!

He reminds me of Joel Caleb. Hopefully the coaching staff makes better use of current and future athletes.

Allen Ox

The move at the 1:35 mark is seriously ill. Wow, Sure hope we get him

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Reminds of a heavier Greg Stroman type player

guy has RB written all over him, possibly WR

Guy would be dynamite as a Georgia Tech or even Georgia Southern quarterback.

Its pretty scary thinking of him at GT at QB actually.

Dropped a couple throws 55 yards + in that film

Can't believe no SEC offers. Kid is electric

Mizzou offered him as an athlete, but that's it.

Ugh I was so ready to jump on that. I'm gonna do it anyway.

Hmm. Little short for a tight end. This one might be real.

Russell Wilson is about 5'11. Vick wasn't much taller

How tall is Louisville's freshmen QB? He looked as dynamic as anyone I saw playing in the bowl season, but I don't remember thinking he was a "prototypical" size for a QB either.

Jackson is listed at 6-3... so who knows he could be anywhere between 6-1 and 6-3 as measurements are always rounded up.

I was nine years old the last time those bow tie wearing sissies beat the good guys.

This kid is electric. I wouldn't mind seeing him in the slot catching those quick screens and then breaking away from the pack of players as he strolls into the endzone.

QB, RB & WR competition this Spring/Fall will be absolutely insane...

Let's hope his transition from QB to WR is as seamless as Julian Edelman's.

Disclaimer: I am not a Patriots' fan. Julian Edelman is simply the best WR former QB I could think of off the top of my head.

I was nine years old the last time those bow tie wearing sissies beat the good guys.

Hines Ward was probably the best, but of course he is now retired.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Antwan Randle-EL was another IIRC. Not a hall of famer like Ward though

The Dude Abides

Randall Cobb is pretty good.

He was particularly good with the shotgun(s).

Explosive. Run style similar to David Wilson.

And the man's highlight-music game is on point!

He should add an intro

*movie guy voice*: "In a world where sub-6 foot qb's are dismissed....one man refuses to be denied...."

The Dude Abides

Crazy that some of those highlights are against Hoover. Means good competition.

Whether RB or receiver would love to have him and use him in the Wild Turkey since he can throw. Any of those receivers also available?

ChicagoHokie

I think in Fuente's system we give this guy a shot at QB first. May not be a likely QB at this level but if they kid can run the offense better than the next guy, I'm all in.

Pigrome, huh? hmmmmm

Pigrome... Pig-rome.... Pig Rome... We have a very good school of Agriculture and they work with pigs all the time (and our dining halls serve delicious bacon)... And Rome, like the city, whose flag is as follows:

It's so hard to judge his arm by highlights, because you just never see the bad decisions or bad passes. But there is good zip on a lot of those passes, so it looks strong.

His speed? The first play didn't impress me all that much -- but then the rest of the plays it looks like he pretty much runs as fast as he needs to. I don't think he has MV7 speed, but he definitely has a great burst and high top-end.

What really is remarkable and sets him apart is dat balance. Amazing. Reminds me of Lil Sweetness hisself. Can't teach that. I want him on the field for the good guys with the ball in his hands.

Good comment on his speed. I remember thinking that we'd never really know how fast Vick was because he just seemed to be as fast as he needed to be when he needed to be it. As for height, I'm with those who just want production. We don't have to be the supplier to the NFL here, I'll take a great college player over a mediocre pro prospect most any day, especially at QB.

Senior Year Highlights

His Senior year highlights are surprisingly good. From his Junior year, it doesnt look like hes a College QB, his Senior year though, hes got a legitimate shot, some of those throws were ridiculous.

Im surprised hes rated so low, Im also surprised by the lack of "why are we offering this guy hes a low 3 star" comments...

If we got him, Caleb Evans, Josh Jackson thats an extremely under-rated stacked class (solely based off useless highlight films haha)

His throwing motion (flick or the wrist) strength like Vick, but touch like Taylor. He has speed burst like Wilson but shifty like Dante Hall from Kansas City awhile back.

Don't forget Jerod Evans!

Those guys are presumably in the running for QB after Jerod Evans.

I have to admit, I can't wait to see their new show. I think the BBC was nuts to fire him and effectively cancel the old show. Suspend, fine, etc would all have been good, firing is just going to hurt themselves in the long run.

They have been pimping the hell out of them though. Using old shows to create new shows. "Best of" road trips etc

I mean, the antics of that trio and their general sense of humor is great entertainment and I love that show and those guys but Jeremy did make the decision pretty tough for BBC when he physically assaulted another individual at work. I understand why his contract was terminated and I feel badly for BBC that they are losing a great money maker but they did what they had to do. It would have been a PR nightmare for them to retain Jeremy. It sends a message that the BBC doesn't want to send and I don't blame them for that.

All that being said, I'm looking forward to their show on Amazon. I'm pretty happy my fiancee got amazon prime.

Onward and upward

nevermind. that was just going to open a can of worms I'd rather not pursue on this site.

Reading up on the new BBC show, I don't have high hopes. Looks like there is a very good chance this is going to be a disaster from the start. To say there is a disconnect between Chris Evans and the producers is putting it lightly.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I think he's referring to the new show on Amazon featuring the original Top Gear Trio (Clarkson, May, Hammond) and not the new BBC Top Gear with a new cast...

Onward and upward

I know...

I've been hearing that show is going to be great, with the trio rejuvenated after being freed by the restraints of broadcast TV. Amazon is essentially letting them do what they want.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Let's have our new QB Whisperer have a few season with him. Dynamic.

Always choose joy.

His senior highlights look like he's just thinking faster than anyone else on the field. Ridiculous moves.

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

"Ty Pigrome is what makes their offense go," said Matt Glover, head coach of Pinson Valley High. "He is the best player in the state of Alabama, and I don't believe second place is even close. They have the best offense that I have ever coached against, and he is the reason they are that good."

To me, that's the most telling quote from the article. The HS coaches in the area know pretty quickly who's special and who's just another run-of-mill college prospect. When I was in high school, Russell Wilson was talked about in the same manner (even though he only got two scholarship offers). Obviously I'm not saying that this kid is going to be the next Russell Wilson but it's always a good sign when coaches in the area give you the stamp of approval.

QB is such a hard position to judge because of the intangibles. Bill Simmons wrote this three years ago when he was talking about Russell Wilson as a rookie and I firmly believes it hold true in college football as well:

You know where I stand: I believe the quarterback position comes down to 50 percent charisma/personality/leadership/intelligence/coolness-under-pressure, 25 percent hard work and 25 percent talent. If you're the smartest, coolest and most charismatic guy in the huddle, if you're the one who stands out even when 53 dudes are busting each other's balls in the locker room after a practice, if you're the one everyone likes, if there's just something indefinable about you that makes people say, "There's just something special about the way that dude carries himself," you're halfway there. Playoff hockey teams become unbeatable once they believe, "Nobody is scoring on our goalie, he's locked in." (See: Quick, Jonathan, 2012.) Playoff basketball teams become virtually unbeatable when they believe, "Our guy is better than everyone else's guy, period, end of story." (See: James, LeBron, 2012.) And football teams turn into playoff teams when they believe, "I would run through a wall for my quarterback." We have decades and decades of evidence to back this up.

If this kid has the intangibles to match with his production, I don't see why he couldn't be a special quarterback for us, even if he's 5'11".

OSU with LSU as a darkhorse

Nailed it....

Hopefully he does it before Tino signs his NLOI or else he is stuck at UM with no QB

Maryland actually offered Ty Pigrome (sp) and a low 4* guy who decomitted from Arizona. A little worried about Ty, he was very high on us but he has a much better chance at playing QB at Maryland than here

January in VT recruiting should be very interesting. We have like 30+ names floating around for about 10 spots. Most of them brand new names.

Which means there will be handwringing over 20+ guys not signing with VT...

absolutely... just seemed like haskins and tino were a package deal and were the ones who lead the maryland movement thing

Tino seemed pretty set on Maryland from what was posted here, who knows it that changes with Haskins leaving.
