AD Whit Babcock Promises Uniform, Fundraising, Facilities Changes Coming in 2016

In an exclusive interview, the Hokies' athletic director discusses the future of the football program and the rest of Tech athletics.

[Mark Umansky]

There have been some seismic shifts within Virginia Tech's athletic department in 2015, and to hear Athletic Director Whit Babcock tell it, there's more changes to come in the new year.

In just his second year on the job, Babcock already oversaw the most monumental change to the football program in Tech history — Frank Beamer's retirement — and he has some other big initiatives coming in his third year at the helm.

In an exclusive interview with The Key Play, Babcock revealed that further additions to the football staff, changes to each team's uniforms and alterations to the fundraising Hokie Club could all be unveiled in 2016.

Babcock managed to make what has to be the biggest decision of his career before the new year even dawned, picking Justin Fuente to succeed Beamer last month. Now, he's trying to do his best to get to know the new staff now that Fuente has filled out his roster of assistants.

Babcock said he started that process in earnest this morning, convening some of the rest of his leadership team to meet with the new staff for the first time. Much of the discussion centered around the program's "culture" and "what we're trying to build," but Babcock admits that expectations for the new season also came up.

"I don't know that I have any set number of wins," Babcock said. "We want to be competing and, ideally, winning our side of the division. Because if we win our side of the division, then we can have a chance to win the ACC, and when you win the ACC, more often than not, you're in the final four. So we didn't set any victory goals or squeeze them hard, but that's just what we expect at Virginia Tech."

In the 20-minute meeting, Babcock said he came away "impressed" with all of Fuente's new hires, even though he hasn't known them very long. But what remains up in the air is whether Fuente will look to add more support staff to the program beyond the two new recruiting positions Babcock added when he arrived in 2014.

"We talked some about that, he's gonna evaluate things and let us know," Babcock said. "And, shoot, within reason, if it's really gonna help us, yeah, we'll do all we can to find a way to do it."

"We won't add positions just to add them, but in the areas of recruiting and other things, potentially. But in general, Coach Fuente has been very impressed with what he's found here. That's a tribute to Coach Beamer. But every coach comes in and we give him a chance to evaluate it, and if he puts forth a good plan of why we need to do something differently or add someone here, I'm gonna do my best to deliver."

Babcock said financial considerations will, of course, drive part of that discussion, noting that the team ranks in the 30s among budgets of Power 5 teams, while ranking in the 20s of staff salaries overall.

"We have to out-culture and out-people people because we can't always outspend them, but spending responsibly, to be good in football and be good for our students, we'll try to do that too," Babcock said.

While he's quick to say that he doesn't like using Hokie Club funds to pay for salaries (preferring to spend them on "scholarships and student-athletes"), the success of the program's fundraising will undoubtedly play a role in any move Babcock makes going forward.

To that end, Babcock is encouraged by the Hokie Club's recent results, and is hoping to optimize its operations to build on its recent success.

"We've had two years in a row of continual upticks and stepping up in that," Babcock said. "One thing that our fanbase can look for in 2016 is some announcements about some tweaks and improvements we want to make to the Hokie Club starting in 2017, and that's one area we feel like we can take advantage of. We can keep the good of the Hokie Club, but modernize and do some new things there."

Few things fire up the fanbase — and get them to open their wallets — like new uniforms, and, in that arena, Babcock is prepared to deliver in 2016.

Babcock says the department worked closely with Nike's "Graphic Identity Group" last year to review Tech's logos and uniforms across each one of its teams, and have come up with some simple changes to the style. He adds that they've already ordered the new uniforms, placing the request in back in October, and they should be ready by June or July.

"In general, I think it will be more consistent, a cleaner look," Babcock said. "And we really worked with football to revamp all of our uniforms and all of our sports to make them look a lot more of the same....I just like a good, clean, sharp look and I know you'll see that coming up this fall."

He noted that the team will reveal a special uniform for the much-hyped Battle at Bristol in the coming months (his rating: "pretty cool"), and while he demurs on specifics for the rest of the new look for now, he did give a few hints.

"I think if you want a hint, I think you could say certainly, the oranges, the whites, the maroons, but something along the line of black or dark gray anthracite type stuff, that could be a possibility," Babcock said, noting that the team's all-black uniforms against North Carolina proved to be a big hit in the team's first foray into that color palette in some time. "Our standard, sharp, traditional VT logo will be on all helmets next season, same as this year."

But the uniforms won't be the only aspect of the team getting a facelift — Babcock notes work on the planned renovation of Merryman Center and the football team's offices in the Jamerson Athletic Center began just a few days ago.

"We raised, privately in gifts and pledges, around $2 million, and that will be spent on the entire second floor of Merryman and as it comes down the ramp to Jamerson and into the football offices and all those hallways," Babcock said. "We have great bones to the building, but we felt like we needed to freshen up a little bit, remodel a little bit, and that will help the look and brand of the place, but that will help recruiting as well."

Tech has seen a flurry of facility changes in recent years, but Babcock says that there are more on the way as well.

"In 2016, your readers and our fans can also expect to see our master facilities plan and where we're headed next," Babcock said. "We have great facilities here, but we don't want to rest on our laurels. I'm really excited by that. We'll do it responsibly, but something that keeps us at the forefront to train our young people in and recruit to."

Babcock is less certain about what fans can expect to see when it comes to 2016's TV schedule. He says he's "anxious" to hear from the ACC about its plans for VT next season, and expects to know more in his next meeting with league officials.

"I've not been told anything about a Friday game, I was told last year that we'd like rotate out of that and hopefully we will," Babcock said. "We put in our annual request to ideally play a Thursday night home, so other than that, right now we're just saying Saturdays and a Thursday night home game. We'll see what the ACC gives us."

And should the league come back with some flexibility in scheduling, Babcock knows just what he'll choose.

"Obviously TV and the ACC determine a lot of our kickoff times, maybe 10 or 11 out of 12, but when we have the ability to control them like we did this year for Furman, more often than not, we'll look at 3:30 p.m.," Babcock said.

But all that talk of football seems very far off indeed as Buzz Williams' basketball program makes noise in Blacksburg. Despite some dispiriting non-conference performances, the Hokies' win over fourth-ranked Virginia has the trajectory of the program looking much different than it did a week ago.

"It's always great to beat UVA, that makes us all smarter and better looking for a couple days," Babcock said. "But I really believe in what Buzz is doing. He's building a program and it's not a quick fix, and we may take a few lumps this year, but we may deliver a few as well. I was just really pleased to see the progress and improvement. And if we get better every year, it won't be long until we get to the NCAA tournament, and that's ultimately where we want to be. But it may be a two steps forward, one step back kind of thing."

With both the men's and women's basketball teams currently near the top of the ACC standings, Babcock wonders, like many fans, if he might ask John Swofford "Can we just stop now?" to keep the good feelings intact.

But, overall, with the wrestling team also earning some top national rankings, he feels more positive than ever about the direction of his department.

"We want to be the preeminent athletic department across the board in the ACC, and I don't believe that we need to shy away from aiming there," Babcock said. "We're not gonna be braggadocious about it, but that's where we're headed."

"Jim (Weaver) left a great foundation and I really like the way we're headed, but we really want to get every team ranked and every team in NCAA competition, and win ACC championships and national championships. But if we don't do it by graduating kids and playing by the rules, that would obviously not be the way to do it. I like it, I'm getting a feel for it, our coaches are really stepping up, and with our 22 sports, we love them all."

Great job by Alex/Joe to secure the interview, great info about what's in store for the future. Also can't wait for the Bristol uniform release.

That's great that you got to talk to the big man himself, Alex. Nice article.

something along the line of black or dark gray anthracite type stuff,

People have pushing for some gray for a while because of the cadets. I dig it.

It's always great to beat UVA, that makes us all smarter and better looking for a couple days

Haha, such a great UVA quote. Props for the subtle humor in it.

@CraigThompsonVT

I like that Whit has recognized that when we moved to the ACC we were lagging behind the rest of the conference when it came to all the sports except football. I would think we have football's facilities and supporting departments at a point to where we can start to build up the baseball, softball, and soccer facilities and then really dig into the Olympic sports to make the overall department competitive.

On another note, how great is it that The Key Play got some exclusive access to one of the hottest names in Hokies Sports right now

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Football still lags behind, we need more recruiters on staff. It was pretty shocking how little support staff was in place until a few years ago

That was pretty much common knowledge. The Big East entry fees bled us dry -- remember Lew Perkins leaving UConn, going to Kansas and immediately sending the moving truck for Bonnie Henrickson and our entire WBB program because we didn't have the money and he knew it? That was just the tip of the iceberg. Much credit to Jim Weaver and Minnis Ridenour for showing the ACC that our books were in order financially speaking (we weren't pulling a Maryland) so we could get the invite, but we were doing it by holding down expenses very tightly anywhere it couldn't be seen.

The non-revenue sports are definitely getting facility improvements, and that's good (coming back to English Field after 10 years away for the NCAA regional was mind-blowing). I think we need to be realistic, though : we'll have to keep dumping silly cash into the football facilities and recruiting infrastructure arms races, especially with a wave of better coaches coming in to go along with the richer institutions in the Coastal.

I think it's important to differentiate what we are spending money on. Yes you have to spend money. What you don't have to do however is dump it out of the back of a truck for random things. Clemson I'm looking at you. Whit definitely gets that though and seems to have a good balance of opening the checkbook only when it is truly necessary.

The bottom will eventually fall out of the arms race and I don't want to experience it when it happens.

Look, our record when wearing specialty uniforms are terrible. Please, STOP! I like wins more than uniforms! As a last resort:

Go Hokies!

Because there is any correlation between performance on the field and the uniform the team is wearing...

Look back at the last ten years and see if I'm wrong. If I am, I'll say that I am. Oh and BTW, we're sports fans right? Being superstitious kinda comes with the territory of the fandom.... ;-)

Go Hokies!

...and Whit is a baseball guy...who we all know aren't superstitious. /s

We put the K in Kwality

Look back at the last ten years and see if I'm wrong.

But who were the teams we were playing when we wore these uniforms? It's not like we break out the "cool" uniforms against FCS talent.

Alrighty then. For this exercise, if a uniform was worn more than once, I am only counting the first time they wore it. For example, this year's military appreciation helmet only counts vs. Furman and not the other times they wore it this year, since that is the game it was debuted.

It was also a bit subjective since I did not include the retro helmet the team wore vs. UVA & Tulsa or the variations of striped/not striped helmets in the past.

2006 vs BC (orange sleeve): win
2008 vs Furman (introduced retro-striped uni): win
2009 vs UMD (Pro Combat white): win
2010 vs BSU (Pro Combat black): loss
2010 vs Central Michigan (first ever white helmet): win
2010 vs Stanford (first ever orange helmet): loss
2012 vs Austin Peay (Hokie tracks helmet): win
2012 vs Bowling Green (green camo): win
2012 vs BC (HokieBird helmet): win
2012 vs Rutgers (Fighting Gobbler): win
2013 vs Alabama (Gray Grossness): loss
2013 vs Marshall (orange camo): win
2013 vs GT (Hokie Stone helmet w/ pylons): win
2013 vs UMD (Hokie Stone helmet w/ VT): loss
2014 vs ECU (Stars & Stripes helmet): loss
2015 vs OSU (orange chrome helmet): loss
2015 vs Furman (Military appreciation/navy template): win
2015 vs UNC (all black): loss

Go here to see all of these uniforms: http://cruhland.com/unibuilder.html

The games we remember losing while wearing a special uniform were mostly against high caliber opponents, or at least teams that were equal to or better than us on paper. The only losses that seem to be terrible losses are UNC and ECU. And granted, a lot of the wins were against over-matched opponents (though I kinda' want to count the Hokie Tracks & Hokie Bird helmets as losses).

Anyway, I guess I have grown weary of hearing excuses about poor play based on uniforms or comments like "they should spend less time picking a wardrobe and more time on the practice field," as if they are not practicing as much as the NCAA currently allows.

I guess you and I have different definitions of a specialty uniform. I'm more inclined to think of a specialty uniform as something that the team wore when they played BSU back in 2010. When I say specialty uniform, I mean the outfit, sans the helmet.

Also, I agree that we should not include the uniforms they wore to the Independence Bowl since it was more to honor CFB. Also, it was only the helmet and not the uniform.

Go Hokies!

Thanks for the info on the website. That's a pretty cool site.

Go Hokies!

So here is what I consider to be a specialty uniform:

2009 vs Maryland (Pro Combat): Win
2009 vs Virginia (Pro Combat): Win
2010 vs BSU (Pro Combat): Loss
2012 vs Bowling Green (Camouflage): Win
2013 vs Alabama (Gray): Loss
2013 vs Marshall (Camouflage): Win
2013 vs Georgia Tech (All Maroon): Win
2013 vs Duke (All Orange): Loss
2013 vs Maryland (Gray): Loss
2014 vs Miami (All Maroon): Loss
2015 vs OSU (All Maroon): Loss
2015 vs Duke (All Maroon): Loss
2015 vs North Carolina (All Black): Loss

Total: 13 Games, 5 Wins and 8 Losses.
Special thanks to "ohherro" for the introduction to the awesome website.

Go Hokies!

All I see in this is that in that same timeline we went from winning consistently to a very average to low average football teams.

I really don't put stock in special uniforms when a team has been consistently .500 and has a losing record to play teams on their level or higher. I don't care if the guys come out in pink tutus and a unicorn horn on their helmets win the game we are supposed to win!

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

I wouldn't consider (All Maroon) and (All Orange) "specialty" uniforms. Those uniforms were no different (in style and design) than our other uniforms. It's just that we make a big deal out of All Maroon (being good) and All Orange (being bad).

"Specialty" uniforms would be any uniform:
- the primary color not Maroon, Orange or White
and/or
- change in uniform design (i.e. orange camouflage or Pro Combat)
and/or
- any type of "throwback" jersey (don't believe we've done this with the jersey, only the helmets. The Donald Duck Oregon jersey is an example that comes to mind.)

Actually, you might be surprised.

Kids pick schools based off their uniforms from time to time. Like any field, the way you feel about how you look can impact your performance. When I have a big client presentation, I wear my best suit. In my mind it boosts my presentation if I look sharp. Why would it be different for college kids on national TV? If anything the effect might be more pronounced

It has nothing to do with superstition. Everything to do with how people actually think and behave

Again I weigh in on the Old Fart take on uniforms. I don't care about them. I never heard anyone discussing them until I started reading this site a year ago. The level of comment indicates a big level of interest, but it is honestly the least thing in the world of Hokie that matters to me. Now, do I like the traditional, eschew the sensational? Yep, no doubt, but only because of this site would I make anything of it, really. Otherwise, my wife and I would probably just see special colors on the field and agree that we like the traditional colors better, and that'd be the end of it. I know, I know, the kids like it...recruiting...etc., but for me, I just like the idea of letting the program be the thing, the University being the thing, the tradition being the thing, because I think that's what I always wanted for the Hokies. National recognition like Notre Dame, Penn State, for examples. You see the field and the teams and you know who's playing. I know, go back to my jeans, flannel shirts, work boots and jeans jacket and leave the rest of the Hokie world to progress. Just don't think that most fans really give a hoot. I don't believe they do.

Let's not forget the orange pants curse.

Yeah, but who thought we looked good in those.

Dang near cost us the bowl game this year!!

  2. Woo! Free beer!
  3. Look how close these seats are for how little we paid! What a bargain!
  4. WOOOOOOOO!!!! ENTER SANDMAAAAAN
  5. Okay, enter sandman has been going on for a long time, I can't keep this jumping going for the entire song.
  6. Oh god... Orange pants.
  7. They just scored in 15 seconds... curse you orange pants
  8. We just scored in 15 seconds... We'll talk about this later orange pants
  9. We lead by three touchdowns. I guess the orange pants aren't a huge problem
  10. THE ORANGE PANTS ARE A HUGE PROBLEM, LOOK AT ALL THESE POINTS THEY'VE SCORED, THIS GAME IS TOO CLOSE
  11. Oh thank god, we won in spite of the orange pants.

Granted, many of these thoughts were influenced by the first two thoughts.

+1 for making me laugh.

Okay, so I had to look this up:

Anthracite is a hard, compact variety of coal that has a submetallic luster. It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest calorific content of all types of coal, which also include bituminous coal and lignite

Secondly, I really loved the Friday night game. Sure, it interferes with some HS football, but otherwise, its advantageous to Thursday nights. No NFL game to compete with. Easier to get off half a day on Friday. Stay over night until Saturday. For kids who play day sports on Saturday's, this may be the only game they can get to....Thursday nights aren't good for school kids because they too will need to miss two days.

Whit, keep the Friday night game!

Soooooo the fact he said anthracite is a pretty big indicator that color is going to be used. He could have just said grey.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I see it as more of a dark metallic-ish gray. Kinda like these but hopefully a matte painted helmet with the anthracite being used just as stripes in the jersey and around the numbers maybe.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Yeah, I think this is where we're going. As an accent color or a one-off I've got zero problems with it -- aside from the silly print pattern on the numbers, I loved our Boise State FedEx game uniform as a one-time special, and it was maybe one notch darker than this.

see IMO if VT uses this anthracite gray it will be the main color and then maroon and/or orange will be accents like the stripes and on helmet.

Look at oregon's style above and imagine that with a maroon or orange instead of the volt yellow..

If anyone is wondering what anthracite grey looks like here is what nike uses for Oregon's

That with maroon and orange accents instead of the green is giving me an awkward boner.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

DID YOU SAY ANTHRACITE WITH MAROON?

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

Anthracite? I was way off!

I looked up anthracite on google images and this is what came up:

Edit: Should've refreshed the page to see the use of the color on the Nike uniforms above. Sorry guys.

I was kinda hoping for an all orange everything look for the game, with a little white trim.
And a small helmet sticker or uniform a patch that says our orange is the not the only thing better than yours.

Thursday night games get much better ratings than Friday night games and have been a staple of the Virginia Tech brand over the years.

How much better ratings on Thursday vs Friday this year? Seems to me the NFL game has taken over Thursday nights. I'm just as likely to watch the Friday night games as the Thursday and I almost never watch the NFL games. I wonder what people who really like the NFL do, more Friday night games?

I agree there is some significant brand connection there. Unfortunately, Friday night is now UCONN and BYU. But if the ACC took 6 games on Friday nights, we may start to own that image and strengthen the Friday night brand much like VT (and GT) did for Thursdays.

Why would you rebrand your team when it isn't necessary? That makes no sense.

Because the NFL has encroached on the Thursday night brand, making it less valuable.

Beamer used to use the Thursday night game for recruiting. 100% national exposure games. That doesn't exist anymore, at least not on Thursday night, thanks to the NFL.

Bastards.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Just because the market share is now split doesn't mean the portion you have is lesser than the full portion on another day. You have a recruiting tool and you would throw it out just because there is another game on TV on Thursdays.

And what happens when the NFL puts games on Friday too, because you know their coming.

Thursday night is dead for college football now. Go to a sports bar on a Thursday and see how much love the ESPN college game gets.

Friday is the new Thursday. Plus it's generally more convenient for non-locals (and VT has A LOT of non-local alums) to attend a Friday night game than Thursday. This move makes little sense to me.

I wouldn't declare it dead regardless oh how much you frequent sports bars on Thursday nights.

You really need to get out more then to see what's going on out in the world.

The NFL Network (with much more limited access to homes ) is consistently the #1 cable show on Thursday nights and beats ESPN college football handily in the ratings. This year's VT-GT Thursday game was beaten 5 to 1 in viewers by the Bills-Jets. This is only going to get worse as NFL Network access increases. If a Thursday night NFL game is also broadcast on a network, the difference is like 15 or 20 to 1 over an ESPN college game.

If Thursday night isn't dead for college football, it's on life support with no sign of brain activity.

Hyperbole doesn't change the fact that Thursday night games in Lane Stadium are still a valuable recruiting tool regardless of the fact that there is an NFL game on. Until that changes the Virginia Tech will likely continue to ask for Thursday night home games every season. Your doom and gloom scenario won't happen until ESPN "pulls the plug".

A valuable recruiting tool in what way? You can't have all of your big targets there because many can't miss school that day or especially the next if they have a game. You can't host them for a full OV because, again, they'd have to miss school at least one day. You can't host those who live further than a couple hours away because, again, they'd have to miss school. I'm not going to say Friday is a bigger day for recruiting, but it does open up more possibilities. Come to the game Friday if you have a bye week for your HS team and have a full OV on Saturday. The best recruiting tool is Saturday afternoon/evening games because you can get all of your big names there, but Thursdays are only good for a national broadcast which has now seen a smaller audience thanks to the NFL. Fridays are also better from a VT and NRV community standpoint as folks are more likely to stay the whole weekend, attend games where they have to take off 1 day or no time at all from work versus possibly 2 for a Thursday night game, and attend other VT athletics events that are going on that weekend.

The small number of viewers only appears small because of the relative difference in the numbers put up by the NFL giant. A Thursday night game is still going to get more viewers than any other regionally televised game on our schedule. It also gets a broader spectrum of viewers, which is good for exposure.

On a different note, I like Thursday night games because they essentially spread the bye week over two opponents (unless we play the Saturday prior which I'm not a fan of).

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Thursday is certainly better than a noon regional.

But that's not really the question. The question is...which slot is better? Thursday or Friday? It's really hard to compare apples to apples (sometimes multiple games on ESPN, ESPN2 and/or FS1, differing start times, and widely varying caliber of match-ups & teams playing -- and sometimes having to compete against, say, baseball postseason), but looking at the ratings for 2015, I'd say Friday gets the better ratings when you compare similar caliber east coast games at similar times.

FWIW, the OSU @ VT game was worth about 7 or 8 Thursday or Friday night games in terms of viewership -- it was the 4th highest watched regular season match-up of the season and wasn't very far behind the top 3, but well ahead of #5.

And does it really make that much difference with a Thursday vs a Friday game with regard to the bye week?

I personally like Friday a lot. I guess the one drawback is competition with high school football, which takes away some recruits seeing the game on tv, but shouldn't affect those making visits (I think most visits are only done on Thursday if they have a high school bye anyway) I really liked the black Friday game even though the student numbers are down during thanksgiving break. I have no problem substituting Thursday with Friday.

Edit: I just thought if this, but Thursday games would allow the VT coaches to hit up some Friday night high school games on the recruiting trail. Not sure how significant that is though.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I wish we could make the LOLUVA/VT game a permeant Friday after Thanksgiving game. Call it the Turkey bowl and make it the post Thanksgiving game to watch. While the "woman" are out shopping the "men" stay home and watch UVA/VT game. Make the game synonymous with thanksgiving make it an annual tradition for people around the country.

The major downside of that game being a Friday is that it is harder for students to get back to campus by then.

Having it Saturday doesn't really make it easier. But having the game on Friday makes it a tradition, one great for TV.

Saturday gives an extra travel day and is the normal day students return to campus anyways so it does help. Campus does not normally open on Friday.

TV Ratings are objective fact.

TV ratings is actually still a guessing business to a degree.

True. But so is the U.S. Census. And both get used to make investments of billions of dollars because they're still far better than some guy just making it up.

Appalachia is one of the few major deposits of Anthracite, and for a long time was the top producer of it along with Wales, with more recent discoveries only in the past century.

The fact that It burns cleaner is a major factor, Britain used it and hoarded supplies in WW1 to let the Royal navy give off less smoke from ships to be spotted than the German navy.

I wonder what percentage of Virginians have actually visited the coal producing part of our State. I'm guessing that most people don't realize that there is another 3+ hours of VA west of Blacksburg and that the Roanoke Valley & Blue Ridge produce no coal.

If you want to see Virginia's coal country, drive 2-3 hours west of Blacksburg on 460. The road crosses into West Virginia and then quickly back into Virginia. Past Richlands the terrain changes dramatically as well as the economy. When you get to Grundy, there is no natural flat ground anywhere (although there are plenty of mountaintops that have been leveled via strip mining) and you are in the heart of Virginia's coal country. VERY different than the rest of the state.

There are smaller deposits of coal in other parts of the State, but that far western region of Dickenson, Buchanan, and Wise Counties produce the vast majority of the coal mined in Virginia.

I have to agree. My wife and I went to the NCST game this year and it's a lot easier to just take one day off work and drive down Thursday night after work (we live in NOVA). I think I'd have liked it better as a student too since you don't have to worry about getting up for class the next day.

Ha, one downside to being in the Corps was no getting drunk before a football game. Well, you theoretically could, but it generally wasn't worth the consequences if you got caught. Marching drunk is not particularly easy (*ahem* so I've heard).

There were times that marching straight was easier than walking straight.

Dude, my sophomore year I showed up to formation still drunk from the night before and got promoted.

WORST. READING DAY. EVER.

I just remembered being really surprised I wasn't hungover when I woke up, and then during formation Vaughn and I made eye contact and started giggling, and it dawned on me that we were all still hammered.

I had been very proud of myself that I had gotten up dressed and through formation just fine. Then came back to my room to discover my iron still on and my sink still running, and then decided it might be best to go abck to sleep for a bit.

Great stuff. Can't wait to see what the uniforms look like. I wish we would unveil them before signing day to push some of those bubble guys on the fence. If not, I'm sure someone in the old basketball regime is still here that might know a thing or two about the bubble before a big decision.

Good get and good work, but one bone to pick:

Few things fire up the fanbase — and get them to open their wallets — like new uniforms

With all due respect, this is insane. Get Twitter and the various forums talking? Yup. Excite players and recruits? Sure. But licensing revenue coming to VT (as opposed to staying with Nike) per incremental new uni set? It's difficult to believe that competes with even something as basic as gameday food and drink. And scan the club level at Lane for jerseys if you want an indication of how much they move truly big donors. You won't see many.

It's likely that in Whit's experience as AD at Cincy and his two years here, which I believe our black uni set is the only true specialized uni set during his tenure here, he has seen spiked sales in jersey revenue when introducing a new uni set - at Lane or on the internet. When saying that, he's not specifically referencing big donors, but the fanbase in general. New jerseys even get a broke college student to break the bank for one. So I think it's safe for Whit to say it gets the fanbase fired up and to open their wallets.

Party Positive.

I don't disagree with you at all. Except, Alex said that, not Whit.

Onward and upward

Jersey sales constitute about 5% of collegiate licensing revenue per NYT last year. (Pros make more.) For 2010, the last year for which there's broken-out data, we made $1.6M in total from ALL licensing revenue per Roanoke Times. The Boise State game was that year, and that jersey was a huge hit -- I still see some of those in the stands. So in what should have been a good year given a great one-off jersey, we made $80,000 on jerseys.

Since the licensing rate is itself 5% of retail, that blows out to $1.6M retail sales of jerseys -- if each jersey cost $80 retail, we sold 20,000 jerseys total (special-edition and regular uniform style).

So $80K revenue on 20,000 jerseys sold. Not bad. But concessions for the 2014 season brought in $1.3M, just under $200K/game (p. 8 of the PDF, labeled "Page 5 of 31"). Or, put another way, we could double jersey sales from a good 2010, and they still wouldn't match up to a single game's concession revenue in a year we didn't sell out and didn't have very good food choices. We haven't even moved on to parking, tickets, and donations.

Jerseys look good on TV and maybe attract recruits, but they don't make a ton of money in and of themselves for Virginia Tech.

Alex can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe his logic is: new uniforms excite fans more than any other subject (they do, I have the pageviews to back that up) --> excited fans spend money directly (e.g. jerseys, helmet replicas) or indirectly because there is a buzz.

I believe you -- we're talking about uniforms right now in January. I just don't think that excitement translates to a huge bottom-line boost for VT.

because there is a buzz.

I'm really liking the themes of our Athletic Department over the last few years.

Weaver, the older seasoned caretaker who had spotty support and plenty of critics, replaced by a younger more energetic AD who has proven to have more up-to-date ideas and techniques. The most important part of the transition from Weaver to Babcock is that Weaver left a great foundation for Babcock to build on.

Similarly, Beamer, the older seasoned coach who was losing supporters with each loss and thus had a growing number of critics, replaced by a younger more energetic coach who has proven to have a more up-to-date offensive philosophy and results. The most important part of the transition from Beamer to Fuente is that Beamer left a great foundation for Fuente to build on.

I think if Fuente can do half of the job following Beamer that Babcock did following Weaver we're going to be very very happy with our football team in a very short period of time. That's super exciting.

I am really happy with the direction Whit is taking us. He just gets it. While some people might be upset hearing about gray/black unis, I think the important thing is he states his preference is the clean, traditional look that we all love.

Whit is the man.

Excited about the uniforms. I honestly don't mind what we have worn over the years, but something new is probably needed. I just want to see all of the crazy combos. Maroon jersey with white/maroon pants. All white on the road (maybe maroon pants). I think Whit is all about simplicity and consistency.

Just a couple of quick thoughts:

Whit came off incredibly level headed and pragmatic. He understands the university's current perception within the college athletics world but is steadfast in aggressively raising our profile. I love his reaction to the UVa win- not a prisoner of the moment but uses it as a milepost in how the basketball program has improved.

Thank you for pushing for a Thursday night game. I know it's a struggle for alumni to travel to Blacksburg on a work day but that game is for the current students and the NRV community. The Thursday night game is an unique staple of our program and shouldn't be thrown away because of logistics.

Don't really care about uniform changes...if the current players like them, then great.

I wished he got into the VT-ECU relationship. I'm sure he knows that a large faction of our fanbase isn't happy about it. I would have loved for him to get into the situation a little bit.

While the football-specific talk is very nice, I'd say the most newsworthy item in this interview is Whit revealing that a master facilities plan is on the way.

In short - there's a possibility we could be seeing what a renovated Cassell Coliseum looks like on paper in the near future.

I agree. My one thing about Cassell would be to get rid of all the current seats and replace them with a little larger more comfortable seat. I'm 5'11 and 230lbs and its cramped when beside other people. We also don't sell the place out now, so why not remove maybe 500 total seats and make it look a little more crowded and comfortable for the fans at the same time.

We did that not long ago -- dropped capacity by about 600 IIRC. I'm 6'4" 235, so I feel your pain and some more, but we can sell the amount of seats we have if the basketball program catches fire again as in the early ACC/Seth years. Cassell is a great barn; if we have to replace it, I don't think we want to go up a ton in capacity. Geography is always going to hold down our basketball attendance numbers as long as the majority of our alumni live 3+ hours away.

I agree, just going to a 22" seat would be a huge improvement. I think they are 19" now. That's 1960's America. I was there for the WVU game, those WVU fans need 25"+ seats!!!!

Part of the comfort problem at Cassell is the risers. Only so much you can do to the concrete. Not much leg room front to back.

But lose 2 seats per row, put in new comfy seats with drink holders, paint the aisles with slip resistant epoxy. That would go a looooooonnnnnngggg way to make Cassell better.

Speaking as a guy who has seen 5 different basketball facilities in the last couple of years Cassell does need a little bit of work. It gets REALLY loud when packed but I feel like it could definitely use some sprucing up

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Ask and ye shall receive. It won't happen until the summer and it isn't the whole stadium, but it is happening to certain sections. I think eventually all will be replaced and there is also the idea of putting suites were the current crows nest is, but not sure there is a date for that yet.

Does anybody know if they have tickets left for the Battle at Bristol?

i'm no insider, but when i spoke with the club rep about how to get back in and reinstate my missed consecutive years, we discussed some changes (combination of my wants and ideas they were bouncing around). the one thing that seemed pretty clear was that Whit wanted to make sure there was more incentive for people to join and/or increase their giving level beyond football tickets and parking. those are great carrots, but they don't really help people who aren't attending games. I think we'll see some big changes to perks that aren't necessarily tied to being in Blacksburg to enjoy them. what those perks may be? i have no clue...

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

Whit also talked about modernizing the Hokie Club, which I can only hope means pushing t eliminate the Banner system and implementing software that institutions should be using this millennium. That should solve a lot of the issues related to credit cards and recurrent payments, among other small annoyances.

We've got lots of alumni outside of South Western Virginia, so it would be nice if there were some benefits for the rest of us.

I've been on the phone with them a lot recently, trying to lay the ground work for a Hokie Club in the lowcountry area of SC. Until Whit, Sands and new fundraisers came in there was no connections between the alumni and the Hokie Club. No sharing of information, no sharing of names, address nothing. That is about to change.

Great article, glad to see the new AD treating TKP with respect. Here is my take on the uni's from an old retired guy. Some have been unique, some have been down right awful (all orange) and some have been really really cool (Boise St.). But the bottom line is, I don't care what you wear if you win the game and if you win the game you will sell more uni's, make more money from concessions and have more people in the stands. So just win baby and the rest will take care of itself. Now I will get off my soapbox and back to my Bailey's and coffee.

"I think if you want a hint, I think you could say certainly, the oranges, the whites, the maroons, but something along the line of black or dark gray anthracite type stuff, that could be a possibility," Babcock said

The wrestling singlets have highlights of anthracite in them. Perhaps we should expect something similar for football.

I know this may not be taken well by many but they look like something I can go to Walmart right now and pull off the clothes rack. I mean I can go back in my old clothes from middle school and pull out something similar.

I am really hoping there is more creativity in our future uniforms. Maybe they look better when they are put on instead of folded up but I'm kind of unimpressed.

If you get some time, take a look through the Nike Team catalog and throw together a uniform that's mostly maroon with anthracite accents. It looks sick as hell. I wonder if we'll stick with the Victory Formation style with shoulder stripes or if we'll get updated to the Mach Speed or even a Pro Combat.

http://niketeam.nike.com/US/en_US/?l=shop,storefront_catalog&zid=storefr...

Looking at the Mach Speed vs Pro Combat, I think the Mach Speed jersey would look best with Maroon and anthracite...

Look at us. It's only January and we're discussing jerseys already!

I made a version of the Mach Speed with Anthracite and Team Orange accents (3 stripes on shoulders, 2 stripes on pants, anthracite with orange outlined numbers). Oof...it looked

This is what I was able to mockup using school time very efficiently...

I'm not sure why the pants seem lighter than the jersey, but they are the same color. I promise.

Need to keep jersey and pants the same color, unless you use white for one of them. Two different colors for pants and jerseys looks mismatched.

I'm not sure why the pants seem lighter than the jersey, but they are the same color. I promise.

But why are the pants a different color?

I can't tell if you're being serious or not ....

sigh

Are you saying you can't sense tone on the internet???

Rule in my house is simple: When in doubt, I am not.

But seriously, dude, the pants!! What the hell?

Okay, so like, that's cool and with the lack of colors and all, but where are we on the mismatched pants situation?

We are nowhere. Because the pants weren't mismatched, dammit.

In all seriousness, this is one of the many reason I love this site. The humor is quite, well, amusing

But why do you love this site?

We put the K in Kwality

And is your love for this site greater than or equal to your love of mismatched pants?

Math question of the day:

Is his Amount of love for site >, <, or = to the amount of mismatch ratio pant to jersey

And somehow the answer is actually 42.

"Exit light..."

Can I like this site even if I'm not wearing mismatched pants?

This is basically the same as the one I designed, but I did the shoulders different. 3 stripe, orange-anthracite-orange and outlined the shoulder numbers too. I like the pants with 2 stripe, but I think we might modernize the three stripe. It seems to be where we are right now and where we will remain.

That's really...uh, awful.

Oh I completely think that adding the anthracite will bring some great combinations, I just hope it is creative and a fresh look that isn't clown makeup on a pig.

I mean it's a wrestling singlet, what more do you want out it? I'd assume those are for at least one of the Moss matches and with the lighting in there, they will look good.

I think it would be cool to see something like the stone helmets incorporated into the back of the jersey or something along those lines like the basketball jerseys have. Speaking of basketball jerseys... does anybody know where I could possibly get one?? All the one's I see online are youth/toddler.

I'd just like to reiterate the thanks to Alex and the rest of TKP staff for not only getting this interview but a great job all around during this exciting transition.

I think a poll could be taken of 10 different uniform designs and each one would come back with about 10 percent of the vote.

I'd really like a close up on that board. Seems like an after photo.

Seems like a lounge type look. Best I could do.

Its the main entry/foyer area of Merryman... or at least the conceptual drawing of what it will look like after renovations. There was a very in-depth presentation online about this last year, which I can't seem to find right now. This was one of the images in it.

Sick, the new unis grant invisibility. We're gonna be unstoppable.

I was thinking there were spooky ghosts hanging around Merryman.

+1 for the laughs. But if I may ask, how will our QB see his WRs? ;-p

Go Hokies!

No need. Timing routes.

At least the Hokievision guys are having fun with it.
