Who is ready for some late-night @VT_MBBall hoops tonight in Cassell?? #Hokies pic.twitter.com/kSO4e8fQum— HokieVision (@HokieVision) January 13, 2016
Hokies fans, we came back to earth a little bit at the hands of an excellent Duke team. We are now 2-1 in the ACC. Its still a great start after years of frustration in this conference and they have a chance to build on it tonight against another team on the rise in Wake Forest. We last saw the Demon Deacons as we eliminated them from the ACC tournament last year. Danny Manning has continued to do an excellent job in rebuilding that program. In his second year at the helm, they have victories against #13 Indiana, UCLA, Rutgers, Arkansas, and LSU. Their ACC victory came over NC State, so a similar opponent with a similar score and result. The losses this season come against #19 Vanderbilt, #6 Xavier, #14 Duke, #18 Louisville, and Richmond.
The biggest concern for the Hokies in this game will be the size/skill combination that Wake's big men possess. We saw how the Hokies struggled against Marshall Plumlee, while he is a senior, has never been a truly dominant big man but had a great day for Duke against us. The Demon Deacons are getting over half their points from players 6'9 or taller.
The first of two Tech really needs to be concerned with are Devin Thomas (#2), 6'9, 255 Lbs, Senior Forward, who is averaging 16.9 PPG, 10.3 RPG, and 2.2 APG.

The second is Konstantinos Mitoglou (#44), 6'10, 225 Lbs Sophomore Forward, who is averaging 11.9 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and an assist per game. Thomas shoots a scary 58.4% from the field, but a measly 60% from the charity stripe so quite the candidate for hack a Shaq late in a game. Mitoglou shoots only 45% from the field but is shooting 83% from the line.

These two are backed up by John Collins (#20), 6'10, 218 Lbs Freshmen Forward, averaging 8.6 PPG and 4.6 RPG. Collins is also close to 60% from the field and better than 71% from the line. There are times that Wake Forest runs all three of these players on the floor together. It makes playing around the rim extremely difficult for their opponents on both ends of the floor.

In terms of guards and wingers, Wake Forest relies on Bryant Crawford (#13), 6'3, 190 Lbs Freshman Guard from Gonzaga. He is having an amazing freshmen year, putting up 13.2 PPG, 2.9 RPG, and 4.9 APG. His ability to find open teammates, especially creating dunk opportunities for the big men makes him a difficult matchup because he shoots better than 41% from outside the arc. He draws defenders out to him and finds teammates in open space. He is also the most likely to drive to the hoop from the top of the key, having drawn the second most fouls of any Demon Deacons player.

After Crawford, Codi Miller-McIntyre, (#0), 6'3, 205 Lbs, Senior Guard is putting up 7.4 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 3.3 APG. Miller-McIntyre missed quite a few games earlier this year with a foot injury and hasn't quite gotten back to where he was last year, when he led the Demon Deacons in scoring and assists while being second in rebounding. As his play improves, so does the difficulty in beating this Wake Forest team. He seemingly makes strides forward in each game he plays so do not be surprised if he ends up in double figures against Tech.

Cornelius Hudson (#25) 6'6, 180 Lbs Sophomore Forward is contributing 8.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG, and 1.9 APG. Hudson plays the primary slasher/winger type role to keep defenses honest. He is constantly on the move in the half-court offense working to create mismatches or open space against opponents.

Mitchell Wilbekin, (#10), 6'2, 165 Lbs, Sophomore Guard provides the Deacons 7.8 PPG, 2.1 RPG, and 1.5 APG. He started the season in more of a starting role with Miller-McIntyre out of the lineup. He provides high quality bench minutes for the guards as needed at this point, still getting on the floor over 20 minutes per game.
Tech is going to have their hands full. This is an extremely difficult roster for Buzz to try to match up against. If he goes with a big man team out there, he sacrifices quite a bit of offense and there is no guarantee that our big men can stay out of foul trouble in those circumstances. If he goes with a smaller lineup, with the return of Miller-McIntyre, Wake has all the necessary pieces to stay with Tech that way as well. Buzz will need to make sure that he has this team ready to go from the tip to avoid a quick let down like we saw in the Duke game.
It's a home game, and the Hokies have had several days to recover mentally and physically from the Duke game. Bibbs will need to have his shot locked in to force Wake to bring their defense out to cover the perimeter, which should open up space for Allen and Hudson to drive into the lane. Leday also cannot disappear for a half again for this team to remain competitive. He needs to come out from the gate with the chip on his shoulder he found for the second half of the Duke game. Blackshear may be the turning point in this game though, as his ability to stay on the court and deliver against a bigger lineup will be critical for us to create space in the lane for our guards to work. We cant afford for him to get ticky-tack fouls early in this contest, especially not bad over the back calls because he hesitated in the rebounding position effort. I also expect that Buzz will have some form of a surprise up his sleeve for this one where he creates a mismatch. One thing his coaching staff seems to be pretty excellent at is scouting weaknesses in an opponents roster.
Wake Forest will play predominantly in a man-to-man defense, high pressure, with high ball double pressure and his bigs are well versed in denying the baseline. Its very much like the UVA pack line defense in that measure. Manning wants his teams to force opponents into shooting jump shots so Tech has to find a way to break inside. They did an excellent job of this against UVA so lets hope tonight is no different.
When Wake has a smaller lineup on the floor, expect to see them try to create baskets in transition off of turnovers. Regardless of who is on the floor, still expect to see the Demon Deacons run a quick, efficient offense, usually under 20 seconds per possession. This team sets a lot of high ball screens to create space for guards to penetrate or find bigs open underneath. Its fast paced and creates confusion for opponents. I would not be surprised to see Buzz employ a 2-3 zone, with closest defender stretching to the ball handler, while the rest maintain their space on the court. It should slow down Wake on offense and force turnovers like we saw against UVA as we tipped many passes in the lane.
Tech wins this one close 79-76, having to make a couple of critical free throws with under 10 seconds to go to keep the game in control.

My body is ready for some Buzzketball
I very much wish this game was being played in WS so that I could go to it, but Go Hokies!
I just hope it is not as ugly as the game in WS last year. The refs ruined the flow of the game. It was just about as bad as the last time I went to football game at Wake. At least their fans were too absent to get a "just like football chant" going.
Are students back yet? Can we expect energy in the Cassell crowd tonight?
Classes dont start again until the 19th so I imagine the student section is still going to be a little light.
I signed up for the lottery for this game and didn't win. Which is weird because I have won all of the other games that I have signed up for this season. I don't know if that means the student section will be full or not. I doubt will be, but it doesn't matter because they don't do standby seating for students anymore.
One thing to look at is the Donor Ticket Application, as I think you can possibly get tickets that have been donated by season ticketholders.
It's faculty/staff night, so they may have held onto a few more lottery tickets than normal.
There have been other games, notably Northwestern, where some students haven't won the lottery and the student section was mostly empty. For the VMI game, the night of the UNC football game, student tickets were "sold out" at the ticket office, however the student section was almost completely empty. Again, at the ticket office student tickets are $10, and like you said there's no stand-by line. I love college basketball and I love Tech, but if I don't win the lottery, I won't go to the game. I'm not the only one. I'll watch it on TV.
Just scored a ticket. So yeah, I'll be there.
sad showing in the stands last night
Sad, indeed. They missed a good show. My wife said a big problem is that we play football too early, and basketball too late. I do wish I lived closer, this team is getting fun to watch.
I really want to see Cassell for the UNC/Louisville games. I think with the way this team is playing, the excitement about the program, and all the students back It should be rocking every night from those games on out.
The crowd at the UNC game is certainly going to look good:
http://www.hokiesports.com/mbasketball/recaps/20160114aab.html
Strip the Coliseum site: http://www.hokiesports.com/mbasketball/stripe/
This should generate some...buzz.
I'll see myself out.
The biggest problem with doing that for the UNC game is usually they end up having a decent showing of fans, or at least they used to. So it will be splattered with baby blue. We might have had a chance at a better showing for Louisville, but gotta jump on the hype train while it's rolling.
Red 5 standing by. I now feel like we're going to be a team that defends the Cassell all year in ACC play. I'm really curious to see if we can play better D on the perimeter like we have been, or if we go back to our old habits of not getting hands in shooters faces from outside the line (coughcoughDukecough.) I am concerned about Wake's production from their big men. That kind of match-up has not been good to us this year it seems. Also, If VT wins this game and I win the Powerball, it'll be a good day.
Welp. *pulls out the bourbon*
For those watching within the DC footprint, it appears you will be able to watch it on MASN, channel you'd normally watch the Nats/Os
I have it on CSN+ channel 78 on Fios
I'm getting too old for 9pm game starts.
Pumped. Home from work and settling in with some cold ones.

Go Hokies! Move into a tie for fourth in conference after 4 games...
Aaaand keep that 1 game lead over you know hoo...
These are always the most challenging games for us, here's to hoping we don't play to the level of our competition, but play Buzzketball.
Very irritated, ESPN is saying it is blacked out in my area, but it is not on TV.
Right there with you. Blah.

Make sure you have an ad blocker haha
I have Direct TV and the 10 dollar sports channel add ons. The game was on a whole bunch of channels.
LeDay for Heisman.
Love the threes early in the game.
Ugh. The only feed I can find is about fifteen minutes behind live and looks like it was tuned with some rabbit ears. Looks like I'll be catching up with you guys and girls around halftime. Go Hokies!
Just tuning in - but the score is looking good.
LeDay is a drunk, poor, toddler's version of Draymond Green.
Literally spot on.
Whew. For a minute there I though me watching was a jinx. Feel like I can keep watching now. We play much better when we can slow it down a little.
Yep, and it's clear Wake doesn't want to slow it down.
Have to finish there Wilson. Missed it and caused LeDay to have his second foul, ouch.
Wilson not finishing at the rim?......shocker.
Is it bad that I thought he was going to miss when he was free in transition?
I had the exact same thought, so I don't think so?
I thought the same and was pleased when he almost made it.
Seth Allen has 80 - 3 point attempts on the year.. hitting 27% of them. My guess is he is among the worst in the NCAA's with that many attempts.. he has shown 0 statistical edge that he can shoot the 3. For the life of me cant understand why he is allowed to do this.. His only edge is ability to penetrate in the lane.. he is a little flashy but not a good player
See, I said the same thing in the LOLuva game and then he started playing like an All-American. He is so unpredictable and streaky. But I do agree that he needs to realize that his strength is driving to the rim and looking to dish. Hopefully he will figure that out eventually.
No, he is a good player just inconsistent and frustrating at times.
who else do we have to play? Robinson is bringing it...you want Robinson and a 6 5 guy bringing the ball up?
he attempted 3 shots tonight
why the hate? from everyone on this board?
His composure was key tonight. He did not take shots from other shooters tonight and they shots he did take were almost always the right choice.
Multiple times tonight I saw Robinson (our PG) call for the ball on the way up court and Allen shook his head, pointed to himself, and proceeded to drive into the Wake bigs and eave a shot. I'm not saying he doesn't have his great moments, it just seems at times he plays selfishly and only looks to make highlight plays.
Robinson had his moments, but I loved it when Seth decided to drive and take the ball to the rim. Someone feel free to prove/disprove this with hard numbers, but it just seems like Allen is a bit better finishing around the rim. This team needs someone to step up and take charge who actually has ACC talent, and that guy is Seth Allen. I'll take that every day of the week. The past few games I've seen him play at a high to very high level. He's making plays to win the game - even if he's being selfish - rather than blowing plays to lose the game. So long as he keeps doing that, he can be as selfish as he wants to be.
Allen's last three games:
UVA: 13 pts, 4-11, 2-5 3PT, 2 reb, 3 ast, 3 TO (okay and he did hit some big shots)
Duke 3 pts, 1-9, 0-2 3PT, 3 reb, 2 ast, 5 TO
Wake: 6 pts, 2-7, 0-3 3PT, 1 reb, 4 ast, 1 TO (better ball handling)
Still, these are not the numbers we should expect from one of our best offensive weapons. Recently he looks like he isn't meshing with the team as well as Robinson.
And against NC State Allen scored 29 points, was 3-5 behind the line and carried the team for a large portion of the game.
Justin Robinson's last 3 games before tonight:
NC State: 6pts, 3-5, 1 assists
Virginia: 5 pts, 1-5, 6 assists
Duke: 8 pts, 2-4, 3 assists
I just don't see where Robinson is meshing with the team better than Allen is, outside of tonight. Not downing Robinson, but I just agree to disagree.
Thanks for the numbers, guys. I'm with Beaver_Hokie on this one. Both guys have had really good games recently and both guys have had mediocre-to-bad games recently. I just know I've seen enough from Allen to be very much OK with him taking a ball to the rim himself.
I always watch (most of) the game again when I get home after a win, and after I saw this comment I wanted to see if it was true. I did not notice it at the game, but I wasn't close to the action either.
Not enough time to watch it all, so I went to the pbp to see when Allen shot or drew a foul. To be fair, I didn't look at turnovers nor 3s (focused on drives as that is what was mentioned).
Here is what I saw; I apologize for the sloppiness as I was typing on my phone as I watched.
Time of drives (in case anyone wants to look too):
5.30 1st
15.32 2nd
4.23 2nd
4.18 2nd
1.24 2nd
1st drive. Wilson brings it up, few passes, great drive by Allen, has to finish it.
2nd drive. Robinson brings it up. Gives it to allen. Drives and scores, draws foul.
3rd drive. Allen takes it up court, robinson did ask for the ball but Allen kept it. Ran offense, multiple passes, but to no avail. Allen drives and shot taken with under 5 seconds on shot clock. Wasn't the greatest but had to put up something. *this was when they reviewed the shot clock.
4th drive. Allen catches the inbounds and has a wide open lane. Hard foul by Wake takes him to the line.
5th drive. Henry grabs the board. Gives it to Allen and he takes off, catches wake napping, and makes an easy drive for 2. Robinson asked for the ball from Henry (kinda) but it made sense for him to go to Allen who was already up court.
In the end, I didn't see what you saw at the game or on the replay. Perception bias??? Or did I miss something (wouldn't be the first time). Maybe it was on a 3 or other drive?
What game were you watching? Allen wasn't driving to the rim enough in that game. Against Wake Forest, Allen only had 5 drives, 4 of which were 'successful'. (I would have estimated a half-dozen before Beaver_Hokie's recap).
When he breaks down the defense good things happen, even if he misses a layup or loses the ball out of bounds.. Sure those particular possessions don't end well, but they do something really important - draw the attention of the defense and create space for his teammates. That helps our offense overall. It's like Buzz said about Jalen Hudson. "he doesn't have to score 23 a game, he just has to make teams guard him like he can score 23 a game"
I think Allen and Robinson are both great options with room to improve. The best part about it is we are getting to a point where if one is having an off night the other can pick it up.
Allen is still the better scorer and finishes at the rim better. Robinson struggled at times to finish at the rim, I counted three missed layups from him that were as good as turnovers. That being said, he got to the line, sank his free throws, and was a major reason why we won the game. He will be able to finish at the rim better in the coming years with added strength and experience.
Both guys could benefit from developing the floater that Erick Green mastered.
At the end of the day, Buzz is doing a good job spreading minutes. It seems almost any player on our team can get hot and provide an offensive spark.
Many shooters are streaky. Allen shot 38% from behind the arc in his final year at Maryland.
They will fall eventually.
Interesting to sig Big Satch in the game. Hopefully he can prove that he can give us some solid minutes in ACC play. Would be huge.
He had a pretty nifty pass to Bibbs for that dunk, and a couple of rebounds. I really want to see him develop.
Yeah I'm really pulling for Big Satch this season. It would be a really cool storyline for him to claw his way out of the bottom of the depth chart to be a solid contributor under the rim for us.
So there's two wide open layups missed today. We absolutely have to put those in the basket in ACC play.
T it up!!!!
Brilliant play by Bibbs in place of LeDay this half. I'll forgive the missed dunk.
We are playing some awesome defense right now. Really a lot of fun to watch.
Never seen us convert so many fast breaks into points even with the missed layups.
That ref flourish though... Just make the call man.
For those of you with access to ESPN3 but it's blacked out, you may want to try out Freedome. I've used it a few times this year and it's been fine. Just need to install it, turn it on, change your location to the northwest or something similar, load up the game in your browser, and then turn it off and close it. Then cast to chromecast or whatever.
https://www.f-secure.com/en_US/web/home_us/freedome
other link is a direct to the .exe
God. I hate it when a team hits that last second 3. So frustrating for no reason.
And the fact that it changed the lead from double digits to single digits.
That cody hyphen guy can Ball. I'd trade for him. like the lead tho.
Other than that missed dunk, I'm really really pleased with everything so far.
There seems to be some obnoxious Wake fans in the building from what I can hear with my shotty vid feed.
Yeah that was just one big mouth guy behind the wake bench. At one point he stated "I don't even have to yell on this guy's free throws, I know he's going to miss these." Big Satch then preceded to hit both. He caught some hell after that.
That Watson dude has the flattest shot ever yet it goes in against us. Doesn't hurt that he's been wide open 3 times now.
Bibbs is feeling it tonight!
So..what are they shooting? 95% here in the 2nd?
Sure seems like it.
actually to this point they are 6/6. 100%
LeDay is on fire man, wow.
My lord. What a pass from Robinson! All the way across and up court bounce pass. Didn't turn into point but wow.
Um. Looked to me like Robinson was just trying to go around him and got elbowed in the face. Also, that is not a punch.
More of an open-handed push to the shoulder. The elbow to the face was definitely intentional. Flagrant for sure.
Yeah. I mean, I'm not trying to be biased here, but it looked like Robinson was just trying to get up court and big dude was in the way so he tries to go around him. Dude throws an elbow to the face and Justin retaliated.
Completely agree. I'm trying to be fair but it was definitely intentional. I don't understand "taunting" though, considering it was all physical and then it was completely over with. Did I miss taunting afterward?
Probably just a way to even it out honestly. Robinson did retaliate so that seems fair to me.
Robinson did continue to chase after Mitoglou even after Wake had scored so that's probably why they labeled it taunting.
This technical foul situation could change the whole game. Poor decision by Robinson to retaliate.
I wish they would show more replay and less standing around.
Well officials handled that pretty well. Lets see how the rest goes
Robinson with the patented James Harden ghost teammate handshake between free throws.
Oh god. Big Satch just threw that 100 mph off the glass.
Terrible that Pierce couldnt finish that put back
Looked like he panicked. Should have been an easy slam.
And that's the dilemma with several of our big men. They should dunk but dont and botch layups regularly
He did just do a great job of clearing out that guy down low.
That touch was about as cold as my living room right now
The crappy fouls our bigs take drive me insane
The inconsistency of foul calls (both ways) was driving me insane. You can almost see the hesitation play-to-play in person beginning after the under-8 MTO in the 1st half. It's hard for the bigs to play the game (for either team) when each official is on a different planet as to what they're going to swallow the whistle on, and when they're going ticky-tack.
You get a free throw, and you get a free throw. Free throws for everybody.
Starting to tire of watching us leave guys wide open for 3
I think we help off way too early on drives to the basket and it gets us hurt on drive and kicks.
The way we play defense that's all I would ever run against us
Gotta agree. It just happened again. Needs to be fixed for sure. We don't rotate well at times and it is a serious problem. When we rotate well our defense is really hard to score against but we lose ourselves way too often.
My favorite was when Wake ran the dribbler of the screen and both defenders fell back taking a double team to a wide open 3 without needing to dribble or pass. So much defensive derp tonight
When Big Satch makes the jumpshot, it's a good night.
Devin is the king of drawing the charge.
So refreshing watching us make these free throws.
That's a good foul. Make Thomas earn his points at the line.
Lazy asses foul by Pierce there. Gets out muscled for the ball and just one hand chops on the outback.
He does need to bring that ball down but that's probably a good foul. Thomas isn't a good free-throw shooter so good to make him earn his points at the line.
We need to make a big push to stretch the lead back to double digits in the next four minutes. Allen needs to not shoot threes
Allen needs to do more of what he just did. Penetrate that zone and create shots for open shooters.
Thank you. Please let the guys who are hot tonight take the shots.
Jason Capel is an idiot.
lol he just tried to argue that the ball hitting the rim doesn't necessitate a reset of the shot clock.
He said the refs need to determine intent... Doesn't matter, Jeff's dumb little brother. It's completely objective. It either hit the rim or it didn't.
He didn't go there to play school, obviously
The students are back on campus, right?
There are some. Most will move back in this weekend.
Alright... Wondering why the crowd is so poor. Regardless, not like the locals showed up, either
Pathetic
Classes dont start until the 19th
Really? Damn, students reported back to NCSU this week. Our breaks are quite long
Frustrating to keep letting these opportunities pass us by.
They knock down a wide open 3... We drive in and force up am extremely low percentage shot in traffic
Yes, frustrating
Man. The fact that we are winning with them shooting 70% from the field is amazing.
Our 3 point defense is abysmal
We pay way too much attention to the ball handler without keeping an eye on the shooters. Bibbs was staring at the ball handler there and left a man wide open.
I expect every 3 they take to fall at this point.
This has been the Hokies for the better part of a decade
If we can't win it in regulation at least get it to overtime. Wake is getting deeper in foul trouble.
Which begs the question...why arent we taking the ball right at their players with four fouls? This isnt the first time this has happened. Really frustrating since their team leader Miller McIntyre is one of the.players with four and Mitoglou who is killing us from three is another
good question.
Quality possessions are huge now. We can't afford to not put the ball in the basket from here on out. They are shooting the damn lights out and we are content to leave them open to do it.
they're bound to miss a shot eventually, right?
That's a good question. But considering the game to this point, if they are open they will knock it down.
Hand in the shooters face would be nice for once
Bibbs unconscious
Bibbs pulls one from deep in the nether regions
What a shot! Bibbs is cold blooded.
That summer ball sure helped Bibbs gain some confidence.
Bibbs, so clutch
Can't believe I had forgotten about these commercials.
Not clutch
Come on boys hit the free throws
You called it. We can squeak this out at the line here.
BIBBS
FTs for the win!!!!
We have made free throws the entire game, let's not begin to miss now..
That wasn't am ideal time to bite on the pump fake
Time to keep hitting from the line
At least we had a guy in the area code for once. They are absolutely unconscious from deep tonight.
I wish Buzz would press after free throws late in games
Are you shitting me?
Lol are you fucking kidding me
Ridiculous. This is such ugly basketball.
and we throw it into....Blackshear?? Someone has to get open there. Ugh.
Edit: Thank god. Clutch
Have to press to force them to earn the frontcourt.
Can we have just one low stress game? And no, duke game doesn't count
The way they are hiring 3s... Foul
would you happen to know the powerball numbers as well? great call!
8, 27, 34, 4, 19, and power ball 10
crap.. west coaster and didnt realize how late it was. well played
Lean into defender, draw foul.
Damn it.
Could that whistle have come any later?
and. of course. of course.
MUST PULL THE REBOUND!
Yikes that was ugly
3-1 in ACC play y'all!
Shew. Thank god. GO HOKIES!
Don't care. 3-1 ACC, baby!

Not bad, ltrepeater
He's always spot on with the predictions.
Could that whistle have come any later? Glad we pulled it out
Gotta wait to see if he makes it or not.
Well a win is a win!
Would have been a lot of wasted stat lines if we didn't pull that one out. Amazing night for Bibbs.
We beat a team that shot basically 60% from the field and we shot right at 50%. We won this game at the line. Which says a lot about the progress of this team.
Edit: Wake made 5 more FGs than us, each of them a 3 pointer outscoring us by 15 from the field. We outscored them 29-12 at the FT line. That's amazing.
3-1 in the ACC, and the tight games are starting to go our way.

Another close call in the books. Georgia Tech will be tougher so lets hope we can continue this trend
Yep. Love that our guys have finished some close ones so they believe in future situations that they can do it.
Made me really nervous tonight. I think 3-1 solidifies proof in Buzz's process. (Mostly to keep the critics off his back)
Well, that was the polar opposite of the last time we played Wake in football.
Another game that I had to watch through your guys' comments
I feel your pain, brother. Blacked out in the ol' Empire State. ESPN Gamecast has become my new best friend. Here's to hoping for a top 25 ranking and some national TV exposure. Until then...read on!
It was on MSG+ on basic cable. No TV for you?
I couldn't find it on TV, so I had to beat down popups until I had a decent view of the game on some questionable streaming site.
That was a fun one. Pretty sure I lost multiple years off the end of my life, but hey, we won.
Was drunk on Hokie House doubles and at the game.
Great win, but I expected WAY more from our defense the way they've been playing lately, but regardless, HOLY HELL, WE'RE 3-1 IN THE ACC! LET'S GOOOOOOO
Can we get a GIFtory of the dichotomy that was the phenomenal steal, TO, blocked shot, long outlet pass combo by Robinson and then the missed dunk on the break by Bibbs followed by a Pierce foul. That had to be the best and worst 10 seconds we have played this year.
Awesome to wake up and see that we won! I couldn't watch the game last night but 3-1 in the ACC is a heck of a start.
I think we are showing that we can defend the home court, now we need a couple of road wins to really show our improvement.
Very disappointed that I couldn't watch the game last night. But listened on the coach while reading last night. The last three minutes had me sitting on the edge of the sofa chanting, "just hold on, don't blow it." I don't think Buzz was the only one that lost his mind when Bibbs fouled with 1.3 seconds left.
Still don't understand the logic of allowing the offensive player to get the defender in the air and then step into him to get a foul. If Miller Mcintire does not move forward into Bibbs, there is no contact. MIght be the correct call under the rules; but it does not seem fair.
I thought the rules stated that the offensive shooter has to jump (mostly) straight up and down. It looked to me like Bibbs was falling backwards somewhat when Mcintire jumps almost completely horizontally into him. Granted Mcintire was running down the court as fast as he could, but clearly he was going to get the foul only. If Bibbs doesn't jump in the air, I doubt a foul gets called.
The basketball team tweeted out replays last night, including of that foul, and it still boggles my mind how that was called. Bibbs straight-up stuffed it, and I don't think he touched anything other than the ball the whole time. That was a bad foul. At least the officials were better than the ones that did the USC-UCLA game, if anyone watched that one. The rare possession without a whistle was quite refreshing.
Before Miller-McIntyre banked in that 3, why were we not fouling them? I mean I understand not wanting to lengthen the game, but the only thing that could hurt us was a 3. Why give them the opportunity?
I'd guess that you don't want to give them either a) a chance for more than three, or b) three free throws instead of a three-pointer. Another bad thing would have been a free throw and then a miss and a successful rebounding situation.
