VT #39 in latest Directors Cup ranking, finished #35 last year

So as of 1/14 we stand 39th in the nation, and 11th in the ACC, with schools who have earned points only WF, Miami, and Pitt behind us, looks like GT is either ineligible or simply hasnt earned any points for some reason.

However things could be looking up, Wrestling and Swimming/Diving both have the potential for good finishes in the next month to give momentum, and Track and Field, and Softball both getting going which seem to be our final real sports to move us up past NCST at 35 currently.

As of January 14th

Pretty good considering we don't have teams in some of the sports they have awarded points for.

That's very polite of you, but I think we really need to light a fire under our FCS football squad.

Nice, but more importantly we have held the Commonwealth Cup for over 12 years...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

I didn't realize anyone else was able to possess it?

Theoretically I think ODU is now eligible...

This is an important metric, we all wish to see our athletic program achieve its best across the board. We should strive to be in the top 25.

Which sports need to improve to get us there? Mens and Women's basketball both seem to be trending in the right direction. Soccer, tennis, wrestling, track/field, softball, swimming/diving seem to be improving. Need football to be the bell-cow as it has been in the past and we need baseball to stop bringing us down.

How hard is it going to be to stay in top 25 of this contest? PAC 12 and Big 10 schools sponsor a lot more sports than VT. Just a numbers game it's going to be hard to crack it every year.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Kinda yes, kinda now. You can only count a max of 10 mens and 10 womens sports.

So since VT is right at it, we don't need any more teams to max out our potential points, but yes it is reliant on the teams we do have to all perform.

Interesting, thanks.

yes, if we field a team, we want to field a good team. but for those schools who field 14 M/W teams, they have the leeway to have a couple of bad ones.

That works for me though. If we want to be strong across the board, all our programs should be performing. If you win through numbers that's a shallow victory at best.

See Stanford for example.

They have won the Cup every year but the very first (UNC got it then), making it 21 straight.

They also according to wiki have 36 varsity teams, though Sailing for instance since it isn't sanctioned by the NCAA and has its own governing body I dont think counts obviously for the Cup.

I totally get it. It just seems hollow that you won using a machine gun while everyone else is using a flintlock pistol. If that's how Stanford plays, hey, more power to them.

Tech recently added women's golf, so that should help in the total numbers game.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Shameless plug to go to the baseball dinner February 6th to support the baseball team.
