Buzzketball Rallies Against Georgia Tech 78-77

Hokies win their first ACC road game in two years as they come back from double digits to beat the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.

[Mark Umansky]

Two steps forward, one step back. A sign of progression one week, a minor regression the next. These are the symptoms of a young and improving basketball program. Inconsistencies which can haunt players and coaches alike, and drive fans crazy in the process.

Coming off a heart racing win against Wake Forest on Wednesday, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team looked like they were in the midst of one of those minor relapses into the dregs of their former selves. The Hokies entered the game against Georgia Tech completely flatlined, and set the table for a long outing.

An opening 20 minutes of poor basketball filled with turnovers, bad transition defense and enough bricks to build a highrise in downtown Atlanta looked like it would spell doom for Buzz Williams and company. But luckily for the Hokies there's a reason why they play two halves, and they used it to their advantage, eking out a 78-77 win over the Yellow Jackets.

"I think we're incredibly fortunate to win," Williams said. "That's the same thing I said after we played Wake [Forest]. I thought they just dominated us in the first half particularly.

I think when you've won three out of your four games by one possession there's a lot of lessons to learn. We may not win another one and so we're very fortunate to win this one. Thankful that in our 11th try we finally won an [ACC] road game."

It was the team's first conference road win since December of 2013, and their path to victory was even more impressive than it looks on paper. The Hokies not only battled back from a 15-point deficit in the first half, but also from 10 down in the final four minutes.

It was a lesson of both toughness and resiliency. The story coming into the afternoon may have surrounded Adam Smith's first showing against his former team, but the narrative changed into one about the two veterans who stepped into the vacant leadership role upon his departure.

Forward Zach LeDay was the only lifeline early on for the team in orange. As the Yellow Jackets raced to their fast start, the junior and his methodically weird playing style kept his guys just barely within reach. The transfer from South Florida scored 10 of his 21 early, and was the most impactful player on the court for most of the Hokies' offensive trips.

But even with LeDay's outing the result still needed to be brought home. And though he cobbled together most of an incredibly uninspiring day, Seth Allen was the man to wrap things up. Just 1-4 from the floor with five turnovers, the junior guard showed why his role is so important as the clock melted away into crunch time.

With a lethal first step and a heady ability to see angles, Allen drew foul after foul in the lane. With his guys down eight with four to go, the Maryland transfer hit two free throws. He then went 6-8 from the line from that point on, using his explosion to consistently put the Yellow Jackets in tight spots.

You read correctly. A Virginia Tech Hokie came through clutch at the charity stripe numerous times at the end of a close game. The arch nemesis that has haunted at least three regimes of the Tech program was nowhere to be found on Saturday, as Allen confidently took each attempt like he had big brass—let's call them onions.

As things ground down to the closing moments, one Tech came through with big plays while the other wilted. And though it's reflexive to assume the Hokies fell into the latter category, it was not the case.

Justin Robinson kicked things off with a heady backcourt steal and finish. LeDay met Marcus Georges-Hunt at the rim for the block, Allen then snuck a pass to Kerry Blackshear Jr. for a dunk. The juniors each then contributed the biggest two buckets of the comeback.

LeDay hit a moonshot of a hook for a momentary lead. And then Allen, with the game tied and seconds ticking down, catches two Georgia Tech players in the air, takes another trip to the line and swished through the final point of the victory.

It was far from perfect, and Williams knows it. But it's also palpable how important this result is for an underclassman laden team.

"When you go through what these guys have been through so far in the careers at [Virginia] Tech, your character is revealed in so many ways," the head Hokie said.

"I'm thankful that, even though we haven't necessarily earned all of them, they're having some positive rewards from that. But I think it's their character. I don't think you can have the resolve to overcome all of the things unless you, as a team collectively, have great character."

A team new to winning will now travel to a place used to it, South Bend Indiana, to face Notre Dame on Wednesday. It's too much to expect a similar result against a program who just beat Duke in Durham, but at least they'll have belief on their side when the head north.

A few quick thoughts

Again, it's hard to emphasize enough how much of a difference Allen makes. Tech hasn't had a player with complete confidence in close games in over five years (Malcolm Delaney). And when a coach can roll out a guy who he knows can break his defender down off the dribble, it frees up everything else.

The most impressive part to me, however, wasn't the free throws. It was how he bounced back from the worst he's looked in weeks with the flip of a switch. Allen struggled with turnovers and almost cost them a chance to get back into things with one particularly bad giveaway with six to go.

But then, with everything on the line, he's able to be the reason the Hokies win. Every winning team needs an alpha male to take shots down the stretch, and Tech has theirs.

The difference between Blackshear on and off the court is borderline staggering. It makes sense, the freshman is the only big man who can be a factor on both ends, and without him there's a giant drop off. The team can use Satchel Pierce, Shane Henry or the currently MIA Johnny Hamilton as a replacement, but each comes with his own set of difficulties.

Henry is a non-factor on offense who looks nervous to get fouled (and considering he shoots 28% from the line, he probably should be). Hamilton adds length, but gets pushed around easily. And Pierce has his moments (see the Wake Forest game), but it's apparent that his teammates give him extra help on defense, which opens up everything from the perimeter (again, see the Wake Forest game).

But Blackshear can't play each second every night. Especially because he struggles to guard girth, and the hefty Charles Mitchell gave him fits in the post. The secret will be out now since there's more tape on the Hokies, and it'll be interesting to see how Buzz attacks when the freshman sits.

This might be the best win of the year so far. The win over UVA was impressive, but this was on the road, while not playing well early, against an ACC team.

If this keeps up I won't even have to get opening day tickets for the ACC tournament!

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

And.... We can do that.

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

That win over UVA looked impressive at the time, but at this rate, by the end of the season that could be the low quality win that keeps up out of the tourney! /s

On a serious note, I like to think that UVA still hasn't been able to shake off our loss, and we caused this collapse, and that it will continue for the rest of the season.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Leg for this astute observation-
LOLUVA's continues basketball struggles present a real conundrum for me. While I'm happy when they lose (anytime any where to anyone) now they're screwing up our RPI. Just more reasons to hate them.

The LOLUVA run to another ACC title....well... it has been stalled...

Whew! Glad they got that one. Feel it validates the team can do well (even better) without Smith.

This team is going to be so good with some more experience. You can already see the talent there and they are gaining confidence by the game. Just throw some experience on that and they'll be very tough to beat.

I asked on the other thread but I'll ask here as well. Does anyone have any information regarding Hill or Outlaw? I know Hill was released to practice a couple of weeks ago but haven't heard any news since then. Also, great win today. Hopefully we can keep it rolling.

Outlaw is taking a redshirt for this year for an undisclosed medical condition. I expect Hill will redshirt as well, because we seem to playing well enough without him, and he can take the extra year of eligibility.

Outlaw will not:

Yea he has a heart condition. Hopefully he will be able to play next year

Keep calm, Gobble on

"Yea he has a heart condition. Hopefully he will be able to play next year"

With a heart condition, I hope he isn't even watching games this year.

I think the games this year are giving me a heart condition.

Hill is very unlikely to be back, too far into season and can redshirt. Outlaw may never play for Hokies, condition has not been announced yet.

The people I know who interact with the team have told me it's very unlikely that Outlaw plays ever again. I hope that's not true but just wanted to see if anything had been released about him. I would agree with Hill red shirting. That allows us to get the most out of his eligibility.

Ugh. Brings back bad memories of the Allen Chaney situation over again. I thought that team had a chance to be special if he had been able to play.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I think our next game against Notre Dame will give us a good idea of how legit this team is at being more competitive in the conference (upper half of the ACC is my definition of that)

It will be an away game against Notre Dame, which is a team coming off a good road win at Duke. Watching the Irish today, they have quite a few playmakers. If Buzzketball can step up to the task and somehow pull off the upset, that game against UNC is going to be higher stakes than a lot of us would have imagined.

I, for one, refuse to characterize or limit this team based on the season so far. I am ecstatic with their production so far and feel like there is something going on that may be greater than the sum of the parts. Coaching? You betcha, but I have a feeling that maybe even we don't know what we got. Ugly, yep. Improbable, yep. I am so psyched right now that I realize I am being overcome with O&Mity, but man, I gotta say, those Hokies are making my damn January right now.

I am stoked that this team has already pulled 4 wins in the ACC, but I am not adjusting my expectations for this team. All 4 of their wins have come against the bottom half of the conference. I just hope when we meet up with some of the top half teams, the games are just as close and not another version of the Duke game.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

With respect, uva was ranked #4 at the time so idk about bottom half. It's early still

VB born, class of '14

And GT was a rpi top 50 win I believe.

They were 44. Surely they will drop out of top 50 with this loss, but still a high quality win. Notre Dame is currently at 46, so another chance for VT to get a quality win. VT needs it, currently ranked 106, before this win.

I don't really care where we are, we would need to win 12+ ACC games for it to matter. But a .500+ season would be a great sign of progress.

Let's just go give ND some hell and see where we stand after that.

I'm just liking all the "quality" talk of wins.

UVA will always be in my bottom half of the ACC.

Oh I know they WERE, but now they are bottom half of the ACC, which is always great to point out, whenever it happens. That was still one of the best wins of Buzz's tenure so far.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I agree with you. I think our lack of quality depth will hurt as the year goes on. 4 of the 10 guys that suit up for us are essentially non-factors on the offensive end of the floor and the rest of the guys outside of Leday are very inconsistent. If Leday has an off night our chances of winning are pretty slim, especially if shots aren't falling for some other guys. We'll probably see a few more games this year that resemble the Duke game, but I also think we'll be in some games that we probably shouldn't be.

I will say though that the thought of Clarke, Hill(assuming he redshirts), Robinson, and Blackshear anchoring this team for the next 3 years after this has me very excited about the future of Tech b-ball.

My #sauces say Buzz was worried when Clarke first got here that he wouldn't be around for more than a year or two.

Always choose joy.

That would be a good problem to have

I don't believe this for a second. Clarke's gonna be a good player...maybe an NBA player. But 1 or 2 and done? I don't see it and I can't imagine Buzz did either.

Right, doesn't have the offensive polish needed for NBA....yet

The thing about winning conference games is you automatically push your opponents further down the conference standings...

I am going to be happy for every single ACC win and know that the team is getting better and progressing.

What is this? Another victory? Every time I log in anymore I see a thread about the Hokies winning a roundball game. Haven't seen any games yet, but I need to tune in to see this LeDay kid in action. Happy to see that we're apparently improving!

"Haven't seen any games yet" Well Horse, shame on you! If you ain't watchin', you ain't enjoyin'.

I love the gritty, never give-up, blue collar nature of our basketball team. That we were down by 14 points and we came back to overcome that point deficit is awesome. I don't care if we make it to the NCAA tournament so long as we beat UVa in the ACC tournament, I'm good.

Go Hokies!

I'll take a run in the NIT this year. Hopefully we can finish in the too half of the ACC,

Top half of the ACC will get us on the bubble.

We still have to go 5-8 the rest of the way to finish above .500 in the ACC. I'm having a tough time picking out 5 winnable games the rest of the way. That said, I would have had trouble predicting that we'd be 4-1 to start the ACC, so there's always hope!

Pretty much, we were second in all the stats yesterday except the foul shooting where we used to always suck. As my wife always says, " They're free, make 'em." And they were the reason for the win. Fouling while defending has haunted GT this year so it makes sense to exploit that and we did. I know that Seth can play and lead most of the time but he continues to try to take it to the rim and either doesn't finish or runs into the redwoods he encounters and gets blocked. The other thing that impressed me as much yesterday was the D on Adam Smith. After his quick 3 at the beginning, Wilson & Seth, etal, pretty much shut him down. I thought that was key in the win too. Lastly, wouldn't it be heavenly if Wilson had an outside shot?

Glad to see that VT has improved it's free throw percentage. That was something they needed improvement in, had the possibility to improve, and have put the work in to get there.

The hard work, recruiting, and coaching is paying off.

I know Beamer is happy. Happy? Ya, happy.

Game observations:
1-Great victory but Buzz is right, very lucky
2-12 o'clock Saturday is not a good time to start games for this team
3-You know in the first 3 minutes whether Allen will have a good game or not. He is strong at the end but very lackadazical at times
4-LeDay is the real deal
5-Hudson and Bibbs are either on or off but never at the same time
6-Blackshear is improving every game
7-Height and inconsistancy are our two biggest problems
8-The future is looking brighter.
9-Never thought we would be ahead of Duke at any time this year in the standings

We really can't avoid Saturday noon games, can we?

May have been brought up in the game thread, but did anyone catch the espn halftime show? I couldn't get the VT game so put it on the UNC game at half, just in time for the black guy sitting next to Seth to say how VT was down ten points and missing Seth. I hope he enjoyed his crow after the game.

You mean Jay Williams, one of the best Duke players to ever suit up and one of the biggest Blue Devil homers on ESPN? Yeah, that sounds about right.

It's an interesting coincidence, but VT seems to win games in big fashion, whenever I watch from north of Richmond. Watched the win over loluva basketball from Watertown, NY. The GT win here in the DC area yesterday. But most notably, I watched VT beat BC to go on the national championship. This happened during my cousin Graham's wedding in Watertown, back in the day.

Assuming I get this FBI job (I'm getting ready to take the IASP Phase 1 test), and am relocated somewhere north of Richmond... VT might start seeing some big winning seasons haha!

Big fan of the way Buzz is handling this. Obvious improvements are happening, strides are being made, but Buzz is very grounded in his outlook and straightforward in his communication. We aren't there yet. I loved the quote that we might not win another one. First of all, it's true, but secondly, it throws the gauntlet down for all the players to prove him wrong. Always praise the good, never accept it as good enough. Great coaching.
