Looks like a project but he has pretty good size. Appears deceptively quick and has a good nose for the ball. Wiles wouldn't offer if he didn't see something in him so we'll see what happens.

We have seen a lot of LBs offered in January. I believe Enanuel Belmar is visiting other schools. I'm not sure if those two points are connected.

This sucks because Belmar plays big boy football in north Atl suburbs (Collins) and looks like a really good player.

but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

beckett is visiting, Belmar spoke with Fuente and cancelled his visit

Belmar cancelled his visit to VT? Or canceled his visit to other schools?

other schools.
he's all VT

I posted elsewhere, I think the coaches identified linebacker as a position of weakness, and are pushing to get more competition and depth.

His Hudl video doesn't show great closing speed but he definitely delivers a pop to potential blockers. It would be nice to have a backer that could violently shed a block instead of trying to out run a block.

We've had some great linebackers that were great because they could outrun the blockers to the point of attack. Chase Williams & Jack Tyler did this very well before our current crop.

Our problem recently is backers running themselves out of plays, or seeming to guess wrong about which gap to hit, or simply getting swallowed up by blockers big & small.

Until the LB situation is resolved, and assuming no schematic changes to minimize the exposure to what is a weakness right now, I have low expectations for Foster's D. (not that the D will suck, but that it will suck by Foster's standards).

Being 59th in points per game is kind of sucking IMO, the offense was 53st just saying

53st

Read this as "fifty-thirst" and then all I could think of was this guy

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Foster does not know how to coach to the talent he has. And how about learning to scheme against a running QB. I truly hope the new blood will help Foster see the light.

The urge to downvote is strong but I will refrain. Please tell me why you think this is the case? Have you read French's reviews this year?

I thought I heard a stat earlier in the season during one of the games that VT has given up more rushing yards to QBs than any other D1 team since 2013. I can't find any site that actually tracks this, but given what I have seen on the field and the fact that other teams run their QB much more often against us it wouldn't surprise me.

No way, there are some awful defenses out there

True, but if the other defenses are really bad then why run your QB against them as your running back or passing game will be working as well

Example A: Matt Johns getting upended and flipped on his way out of bounds in this years Commonwealth Cup.gif

You're not going to see that play against the "awful" defenses very much. Johns took the end of the play off and ended up running into a pretty heads-up defender. It's a reminder of why quarterbacks, kickers and punters don't run the ball unless your team is desperate. In John's case, he was just scrambling out of the pocket and eased up at the sideline. But it was a clean jerk and lift and he essentially brought it on himself by failing to respect the defenders coming after him.

Most offenses playing against us come into the game already game-planning for desperation on offense. ECU took their starting quarterback out to insert their (unfortunately effective) sacrificial battering ram this year. If we're making teams throw their finest porcelain at us to win, we're doing something right. Nobody should ever hope for injuries on the field, but it's a risk a team takes every time they game plan their QB to run.

Ironically we're the school that opened the Pandora's box that is Michael Vick.

Definetly ironic. People may not agree 100% that Michael Vick changed the game, maybe it was already changing but there is little doubt he was the tipping point. I just think, across the board, teams struggle playing a dynamic quarterback who can run and pass. It evens the playing field, giving what traditionally is 10 men vs 11 one more additional person schemes have to worry about.

Ignore this guy! He taught at GT for 20 years so he know as much football as Paul Johnson. Probably wears socks with his crocs at the beach as well.

I have to disagree. However I won't downvote.

My frustration with our linebackers in recent years has been that they aren't very physical. Yes they are fast and smart so they have been successful. Bud taught them the position. He coached them up.

On the otherside It bothered me when they experimented with Bruce Taylor at DE. He was a big physical LB with natural instincts. So glad he was moved back.

Look at the pop this kid delivers to anyone who tries to block him. He has the potential to be a punisher that our defense needs. Our defense has not been a hard hitting defense for a few years now.

Foster clearly knows how to coach, I wont downvote, because its not entirely inaccurate.

Take this last year out as an anomily, hes a top 5 defensive coordinator, its not even debatable.

His achilies heal, as well as a lot of coaches, is the spread or its running QBs. If you look at percent of drives held without points as a metric for defensive efficiency:

VT Against Different Schemes
Multiple --- 86.1
Option ---- 82.8
Pro ------- 82.4
Spread ---- 76.4
Total ------ 81.0

Against Teams with Rushing QB's
74.6

I mean, something you kind of know watching Virginia Tech football, their defense struggles with rushing quarterbacks, but this just puts a metric on it. It will be interesting to see if Bud takes a look at TCU's defense more, theyve done well against spread teams with thier 4-2-5 defense. Im not saying he SHOULD change anything with his schemes, Im just saying it would be interesting if he does look at them more with Fuente now on staff.

Our base defense in most games is a 4-2-5 with the nickel in place of the whip.

Great post, puts some facts behind what we all feel. Objective data is always valuable. Thnx 4 doing the work on this today. Props!

Id like to know how many other top defenses do. I mean, that's why dual threat QBs are so valuable.

Well if you use Alabama as a measuring stick here are there losses since 2010:

2010
SCe - multiple -rQB- Stephen Garcia
LSU - Pro-rQB-Jordan Jefferson
Aub - spread-rQB-Cam Newton

2011
LSU - Pro-rQB-Jordan Jefferson

2012
Ta&m - spread-rQB-Johnny Manzel

2013
Aub-multiple-rQb-Nick Marshall

2014
Ole Miss-spread-rQb-Bo Wallace
Ohio State-spread-rQb-Cardale Jones

2015
Ole Miss-spread-rQB-Chad Kelly

All of Alabama's losses were to teams with QBs who were in the top 4 of rushing attempts or rushing yards for their team.

I'm not sure I would consider all of them dynamic dtQBs, I'm looking at you Bo Wallace, but they could run and they did so often enough to be a threat.

Also there's so stat I heard about Alabama on Mike and Mike that was like Alabamas record against pro style teams in the past however many years is something like 52-2

I for one welcome LBeron as our new basketball savior.

I hear he has been rolling with the mean backstreets since he was a boy. When he picks Tech, let's hope we all get invited to Eron's party!

I saw where Beckett is now torn between the Hokies and another school? What's up with that? I though this kid was a Tech commit through and through?

Life's short, If you dont do it, somebody else will.

Maryland was after him and Yulee. I think with Yulee committing to Marshall, Beckett will still be a Hokie. Also I think it will help with Devon Hunter next year.

Hunter has grades issues already, and wanted to package with Yulee. He may well end up Marshall too. Beckett is a Hokie until further notice.

I think with Beckett a lot will depend on how the other linebackers we are chasing play out. If we end up with Ross or Simms I wouldn't be too surprised if he flips
