So we have a thread committed to the storm and the storm predictions (Big, big shoutout to eshiben5 for his excellent coverage of the storm as it nears the majority of TKP readers and contributors).
This thread is committed to ideas of how to ride out the storm and where you plan on riding out the storm. With the greater DC area under a Blizzard Warning, and the rest of Northern, Central, Western, and Southwestern Virginia under massive snowfall predictions, what do you plan on doing during the snow fall?
Do you have any creative ideas on how to make the best out of the situation? Food plans? Drink plans? Party plans with neighbors?

I'm supposed to go see KRS-One in Richmond tomorrow, but this snow might make me have to miss it. I'm not about to drive from Va Beach to Richmond in crap weather.
My area is projected to get almost four inches of snow so I'm going to broom sweep the driveway and then chop some firewood on Sunday and watch the AFC championship streaming on cbssports.com and not watch the NFC championship because I don't get FOX and read up on robust optimization. Whoo
I'll be listening to music by Sir Wintery Mix-a-lot, watching movies like Fast and Flurry-ous starring Christopher Walken-in-a-Winter-Wonderland and sitting by the fire drinking heavily
I've got a year old Blue Heeler that loves snow, so we'll be doing that. Other than that (provided I don't lose power) lots of Destiny and Rocket League and Bailey's Irish Cream under my heated blanket.
I was skimming and my brain read Destiny as "Dentistry." Needless to say I was very confused and maybe thought you were an amateur dentist..
Two words that should never be associated. Amateur dentist? Nightmares ensue.
"practicing attorney" has also served me quite well.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night...
Ps4?
Yep. My i.d. is "Rabuddhafrid" in case anyone is ever looking to add a friend.

I'll send you an add sometime soon. I've gotten into Destiny recently, so I'm on frequently.
Already had it planned but Mrs. VTmbaHacker and I are going for a 'get away' weekend to a resort in Middleburg VA just down the road. Hoping to get snowed in Friday Night, enjoy some good food, good wine/spirits Saturday, and still be able to make it out for my work travel flight on Sun.
I was thinking that being in Middleburg, snow or not, is already pretty isolating. You may truly be locked in at the resort though, not sure a lot of plows hit a lot of those roads.
As a note, on your way out. Hit up Naked Mountain Winery. They are serving their lasagna lunch, which is made by Inn at Washington, so top of the line stuff. The wine is good, so you can get a case for the weekend. Oh, and the couple who bought the winery a few years back are Hokies. You may notice that the logo is maroon...
AAAAARRRRGGHHHH - That's what I get for not checking TKP before heading out. I definitely could have used the recommendation on picking up a case of wine for the weekend. The bar tab from the weekend is going to kill me. I switched to ordering full bottles of wine after the 1st night just because it was more cost effective. Pretty much everything was shut down, even on Friday. We did make it out on Sunday afternoon to get back home but none of the wineries were even close to having driveways/access roads plowed
I'm flying out of DC at 10am to Orlando, hopefully not stopped by my one hour layover in Charlotte, NC. One sleep stands in my way between a blizzard and disney.
I have to work. Someone build a sofa cushion fort for me.
#Pray4VT_Warthog
....
Boozin'. So, not really different than any other weekend.
Will be shoveling A LOT, drinking bourbon, making my famous loaded potato soup, watching sports and movies. Any must see movies??
Just watched The Internship. Much better than I thought it would be.
I just watched Gone Girl - another good one!
And if you have HBO, it's on there for another week.
HBO has the Godfather Epic.
If you have Showtime, Backcountry was a good watch. And Xfinity has the previous Best Picture winners on demand.
I'll be making a huge pot of boeuf bourguignon and drinking lots of brown liquor.
Attempting to get my chihuahua to pee outside.
On the other hand, the corgi loves snow, but she's only about 9" at the shoulder, so playing in the snow this time around may turn into "searching the snow for the dog."
Several years ago in WV when we got about a foot of snow with a layer of ice on top, my parents' corgi fell through the ice and got stuck with basically just his face sticking up through the snow. It was awesome.
Ours goes nuts in the snow. For her, it's the most fun thing ever. This was from the snowstorm we had in Blacksburg in 2009:
She looks like she's doing the "Thriller" dance in that second one.
Shovel...beer...shovel...beer...shovel...beer. Enjoy my weedend.
Enjoy!! (I couldn't resist)
...It wasn't a typo :)
nah fam. I think she's telling you to enjoy it
Haha!! Comment still stands, enjoy! :)
Weekend already started for this guy
I believe its spelled Weekend my kind bud
"Enjoy my weedend."
Noted. And "mums the word" :p
TKP inspired me to spend the storm making a giant pot of Brunswick Stew.
Nice job! This is what I'm doing too. What recipe are you going with?
Also, going to set up a few beer tasting flights for the Mrs. and I.
Not really using any recipe in particular, just looked at a bunch of ideas and going for it. I've got 5 lbs of pork butt and brisket for the meat.
If it isn't squirrel meat, it isn't Brunswick stew. If you haven't tried it thataway, you should. Changes your world.
Unfortunately not readily available. Though I guess I could let my roommate's cat out and see what he brings back.
Absolutely, and usually some chicken thighs as filler, cause if I'm making stew, I'm making a crap ton of stew.
Shovel, Wash CMU walls in basement, Paint CMU walls in basement. Continue efforts to finish basement into man cave. Wife and I are debating if the 32" from the bedroom should go there, or get a new 60" LED.
What's to debate? I'm fairly sure it's illegal to call it a man cave with a TV under 50".
My sympathies are with you my friend. We just finished our basement and I don't even want to go down there because of sick of seeing it from having to build parts of it.
PS: 60" all the way.
PPS: That's what she said.
32" for a man-cave? You can't be serious!! People have 32" TVs in their kitchens!!! /s
go 60" for the cave for real tho.
I have a 32" in my bathroom...seriously. You cannot call it a mancave with a 32".
Holy crap why haven't I done this yet
Now we're talking!
I've got Makers and this...
Neflix, cooking, and chill
I am one of the lucky ones that has to go work in it, taking the calls from the citizens and visitors of the Commonwealth who didn't have enough sense to stay in and then end up in ditches or worse. (Which doesn't appear to include any of you fine folks, so I thank you.)
But, in case you are ever driving during or just after a snow storm, and see some poor folk stranded on the side of the road, don't call it in, unless you have a good description of both the vehicle and the location (or have stopped out with said person and determined that they have not already called). What usually happens is that we get a screen full of calls, and as we give them out (rather slowly), the troopers inform us that they have already dealt with that one. Or they go on a wild goose chase for a vehicle that someone already helped.
Also, if you're driving from somewhere north of Richmond, trying to get to Hampton, don't keep calling every five minutes to check if you're going the right way, after we've already told you to go 95 to 295 to 64. Sadly, that's a true story, and the guy did not seem to like my suggestion to take the next exit and buy a map. Apparently, that wasn't fair.
Plans for this weekend-
1) Finish round 1 of my Fuente running game review.
2) Learn to tie an Alberto knot and a Rapala knot
I use the "Grog Knots" app for our annual rappelling training at work.
Nothing in it called an Alberto knot, but there's entire sections of boating and fishing knots.
I personally think the rapala knot is overrated. Palomar and uni-knot is all you need!
Nice call. Palomar is as strong as any and a lot easier to tie. Uni-knot is handy when attaching lines, but if svelteness isn't necessary, a surgeon's knot will do. Palomar, though, is unparalleled.
improved Albright for tying braided to fluoro
Yeah, but for flouro to braid for leader purposes, I use loop to loop making the loops with a surgeon's knot. Looks a little unwieldy, but holds up well and takes only a moment or two to tie. Speed and ease of tying in low light are important to me as my eyesight gets older.
i get that!
an albright is a bit of an operation. hence, the carrying of extra rods and leaving the re-tying of leaders to when/if i sit down for lunch..or when i get home.
i do it because the knot has to pass through the ferrule on the rod tip. even using minimal wraps and super good scissors, it still gets caught on occasion
I get that, as well. As for going through the ferrule tip, I haven't had any problem with that loop to loop, even though looking at the junction it seems hard to believe. Certainly a very small eye tip could be an impediment. I do still occasionally feel the connection going through the eye especially when first tied, but it doesn't seem to make an appreciable difference in length or accuracy of my casts. Truth is, though, I seldom use braid in lighter tackle fishing, which is most of my fishing. Don't use it at all in fresh water.
sorry if my "i get that" came across as disrespectful...i meant that at 60, my eyes aren't gettin' any better either!
davelnop, it never crossed my mind. I appreciate the fishing conversation and in no way construed anything you said as anything but a friendly exchange. My eyes have been on the slide for ten years or so, close vision mainly. I am now 65 and I would really struggle with knots if I didn't wear bifocal polarized sunglasses. I'm still fairly functional in bright light, but low light can be a challenge. Good thing is, I've tied those knots so many times now that I can tie them almost blindfolded.
Hope you are weathering this storm well, if you are in it. Take care.
No, dave's one of the smart one's. The "OP" is a tough clue for most, though. I'll be heading that way to close a house for my son (hopefully) within the week.
Florida?
i should probably change it...maybe to seniledave or something. daveinop is dave in orange park (FL) not that anyone would figure that out. i'm also now in st augustine. i haven't messed with the name because i use it on all boards and have for years, and i'm lazy.
it's 40 and windy here today but not complaining. it will be 50's tomorrow and very comfortable/fishable by monday.
Can never know too many fishing knots. I'll be working (tying flies) to sell at the spring shows and stock my guide boxes for the season
French and I have been puzzling about catching bluefish in the chumline for fresh cobia bait. Seems like they'd be typical blues, eat any and everything they see and be fairly easy to catch. Not true. My guess is that they hone in on the chum and ignore anything not. Got to wondering if a "chum" fly would do any better. Kinda like the "fish chow" fly that can work on recently stocked trout when all else fails. Any thoughts?
That's really strange for a bluefish to not eat just about anything, but yes, there are chum flies. There are guides that chum for sharks and cobia in the OBX and tie big rabbit strip flies to drift back in the chum line. Sometimes they eat them stripped, other times just on a drift. If blues are being picky and only eating chum, you can definitely drift smaller versions (Size 2, 1/0) of these flies at them and see if they will take it. Buy some crosscut rabbit strips in tan, pink, white or whatever color suits you, put down a base of thread on the hook. If you want a "tail" tie in a plume of marabou and then tie the crosscut rabbit in at the bend. Spread some super glue on the shank and wrap forward and tie off at the hook eye. The super glue will make the fly a bit tougher for the blues to chew up. Really simple and will look like a piece of chum drifting in the water.
I prefer to use an intermediate line when drifting chum to get the un-weighted fly down a bit. I don't like to weight flies that are supposed to dead drift near the surface or a few feet below, if you do they sink quicker than "natural" chum and fish will be less likely to eat it. I'd fish it on 30 pound flouro. If they are being picky on what to eat they won't likely won't bite wire. If some spanish macks show up as well you will have a better chance with the flouro. Tie a bunch of them, as you well know the blues will go through them quickly.
Yeah, thanks, flyguy. The pickiness of the blues is just hard to swallow, totally against their normal nature, but it is what they are in the chum for us. Nothing else shows up but the occasional houndfish, but you are right that wire is out. The best luck I have had for getting bit is to try to have some fresh peanut bunker to toss out pieces of, but we don't always have them. They will occasionally hit a Gulp bait on a jig head when retrieved slowly and steadily, but not often. They also are good at taking the tail without hooking up. Spot on about the weight, they don't want it.
Appreciate the advice and blow by blow how to tie it. It'll be a while before we go. Now, I need some motivation.
Sure thing! Let me know if it works. I've had blues bite tails off of plenty of grubs, but they were all small fish. Crazy that they won't just full on eat a lure. You could also try an Albie Candy, which is a really small epoxy fly two inches long. If I saw a blue refuse it I'd give up fishing.
We're looking for smallish fish for cobia bait anyway, so larger baits are not indicated. We've emptied the box at them on six lb test, even, and while they will still steal bait if properly presented on a dead drift, they're just picking at it and difficult to hook up with. The fly rod, while unwieldy in a situation with four baits out already, is just me grasping at straws. French has some ideas, but so far, we haven't come up with a consistent solution. Fresh bluefish seem to be particularly attractive to the cobia for us so we really want to solve the issue. Even a two inch fly may be too big, but I've been in situations when after false albacore would readily take a fly and we couldn't catch 'em on our lures, so it just seems like the next best thing to try. Enjoy your trip to Fla. Wish I could escape this mess and head down there myself.
I used to have good luck catching stripers and blues with live eels up off the RI coast.
Thanks, man. I have caught a truck load of bluefish in my day, but what we are specifically trying to catch are 10-12" bluefish that feed in the chum slick we are creating to attract cobia, and any blue that can eat a live eel is likely too big for cobia bait. Known for their voracious appetite, it is vexing for us to not be able to catch them in the chum. They seem to just focus on the small bits of ground menhaden in the slick, and suddenly seem to have grown a brain. They will take and steal a small bit of cut bait, but they act like trout sipping at the hatch instead of the full blown toothy attack they are known for. While we may never figure out a consistent way to actually land them, we are having a lot of fun thinking of solutions, and all suggestions will be entertained and are welcome. Again, thanks.
We usually just troll with bird rigs on top and planers with clarkspoons on the bottom. Usually in about 6-10 feet of water. In the Beaufort Inlet we usually catch the 10-12 incher. If we go out to Cape Lookout, we usually get into the 15-17 inch blues. Only fished in the Chesapeake Bay once, we ran planers and did okay. We caught 3 spanish mackerals and 2 small blues.
In Beaufort, it isn't uncommon to catch 20+ blues in the size range you are looking for in about an hour and a half.
Yeah, interestingly enough, if we were bluefishing, we'd have much less trouble catching the fish we need for bait, but when you are trying to get them while already actively fishing for the cobia with four lines out and a couple of chumbuckets down, all anchored up...well, it presents a different challenge. They won't touch a spoon, won't touch a lure of any kind, generally. They just don't act right!
Gotcha. So you are trying to catch them while cobia fishing and can use them for live bait then... Definitely seems weird that bluefish are so finicky for you in that situation. As you were saying, they are pretty aggressive feeders.
...if i get into small bluefish (pretty much all we have), i look for another place to fish!
We don't have the big ones here that the Chesapeake Bay used to have, and I have caught really big (12-15lb) fish from surf and pier at the Va. and NC coast, and trolling the Bay in the past. Those were worthy adversaries. Nowadays, we fish for them only once or twice in the fall for my buddy's smoker. Three pounds is usually top end for them size-wise. His smoked blues are outstanding fare. We get them on jigging spoons. Other than that and bait for cobia, I'm with you. Little blues are a pain in the butt, especially when they are eating the tails off of my Gulp swimming mullet, at about 70 cents a pop.
As a kid, we used to get them from the shore in the bay near the mouth of the Chester River in Kent Co. Clam snouts on steel leaders cast from shore on rocky bottoms when they were chasing bait fish.
I did get out monday p.m. when the wind laid down after the cold (by our standards) weekend. 13 trout, 5 small reds, and a small flounder in maybe 2 1/2 hours of fishing. small plastic shad (bunker color) and gulp curly tail (white)...fished sloooow in troughs next to shell bars, last half of the falling tide.
kept the limit of trout (5) and tried something similar to this recipe...good stuff!

Right now, you're living the high life. Salute!!
Just started Fargo on Netflix and got a six pack of sixpoint C.R.E.A.M so I'm all set!
Unbelievable. Binge watched season 2 in three days. Enjoy!
I will be playing videogames. If anyone is curious which videogames I will be playing, the answer is all of them. All of the videogames.
If you are not playing this you're doing it wrong.
Already played/beaten it. Might still end up playing it more though because I didn't care for my ending.
One does not simply "beat" Fallout
Well the main quest at least haha
I still cant figure out how to find the rail road or follow the freedom trail.
I had a really difficult time following the freedom trail as well but you can skip the stops and go to the end if you're frustrated. There are guides online that will tell you how to bypass the stops. I've heard it's worth doing though so I kind of regret skipping to the end.
In Russia, Fallout beats you.
Funny enough, that's not too far from the truth.
That story is downright ridiculous. This guy has a problem with addiction in general not just video games.
im 168 hours into the game. trying to do every side quest before i finish the main
Pretty sure some of the side quest lines are never ending. Cause I was trying to do the same, but some BoS and most Minutemen quests were repeats.
Those are definitely never ending. The tinker tom mila missions for the railroad are supposedly not though. It's hard to wade through which side quests are time wasters and which quests will eventually end.
Real talk though, what are you playing? And on what platform?
I'll probably be playing a mix of battlefront, rainbow six, and battlefield hardline on Xbox one with some fallout 4 on PC to mix things up. If anyone is interested in playing something I'm always up for it!
Xbox: xWSx Logan
PC: xWSxLogan
PS4: xWSxLogan
(Note: I'm not a pot smoking teen as the x's in my gamertag would have you believe. Made all of my accounts many years ago and made poor decisions haha)
Fallout 3 on PS3.
Edit: I'm so knee deep in it I completely forgot. the real game I'm actually playing.
Spreadsheets and plan for a brewery. Projections, plans, who is who in the zoo, product contributory margins, personnel handbook, OSHA manual, preferred vendor lists, 3 year plan, 5 year plan, distribution targets and geographical targets, size requirements, pricing justifications...
I had no idea that Fallout 3 had that level of detail.
It's a hidden side quest.
Ever try to predict how much beer a super mutant would consume at one sitting?
Not much, probably just plannin on carrying the wheel....
Badump Chhhhhh
Ill be here all week
MY NAME IS JONAS!!!!!
This kid just gets it.
The missus is a nurse here in Roanoke and is on call this weekend so she'll most stay at the hospital until Sat maybe Sun. That leaves me to fend for myself food wise, periodically run the snow blower down the driveway, and work on some projects.
OOh, sounds like the perfect time for bacon, BBQ, beer and anything fried you have enough oil for.
Wife is a nurse in Pulaski (live in Fairlawn right now). She has to work Friday AND Saturday. She has a room booked at the hospital and is taking TONS of food.
So it's me and the husky and the snow for 2 days.
Soooo, it looks like I didn't store the snowblower correctly. Can't get it started. Guess I'll be attempting a repair...
Get nice and schwasted in Richmond because VCU already cancelled classes tomorrow
Well....I will enjoy being snowed in with my wife for obvious reasons. Other than that, I will be drinking beer and shoveling snow
Watching from afar, with our 50 degree weekend coming up. Part of me will miss the snow especially for the kids part of me is REALLY glad to not have that anymore. I'm sure I'll also listen to some NOVA and DC fire scanner traffic. At some point in the effected area will be a LARGE fire. If anyone would like a to buy a snowblower I have one for sale, for a "modest" fee I will bring it to you, for even more money I will stay at your house and snowblow for you.
Is that you, Jim Harbaugh?
I like to do at least one joyride in the snow with my 4Runner. It keeps the winter driving skills sharp. But if it was an ice storm, I wouldn't even set foot outside, unless it was an absolute emergency.
Other than that, cook and drink, and not shave for a few days. Perhaps some NCAA 14 on the PS3
FallOut 4, Resident Evil 0 HD, Super Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8. But I will go outside and enjoy the snow from time to time. I did see something on Bizarre Foods I want to try, the episode took place in Canada and people were just eating snow topped with maple syrup on a popsicle stick. I want to try that.
On a side note, I work at Food Lion and for the past month had this week penned in on the calendar for my vacation. Oh man what a string of good luck I had taking it this week funny thing is they never even attempted to call me in probably because they already knew the answer they would get......
Hate to be THAT guy....but I'm chillin', tending bar in the Keys. So weather? Yeah...
But I WILL say...anybody that finds me and whispers "TKP" is going to have a great day!
Bottoms up!
What bar? Driving down in 3 weeks to fish and play.
Zane Grey's in Islamorada. If you are flyfishing, the odds are pretty good you will be near here. Lots of flats boats captains and guides right below me, and Worldwide Sportsman for gear right in front of me.
I know exactly where you are. Will try to stop in. We are spending most of our time in lower keys and KW, I've got some good spots to fly fish down there.
Not coming down this year, myself, but we plan to hit Florida and the keys next winter if all goes well. I'll add Zane Grey's to my list of bars to hit. I plan to hit Doc Ford's as well. Maybe I need to start planning an all literary bucket bar list for my trip.
Good to hear! Anyone blowing through Islamorada, just let me know - if I'm not working, we'll get a beer and chew the fat at Hog Heaven, Pierre's, Lorelei, Wahoo's, OV, etc. Ehhh...I'm kinda in my element in bars...sooo...I've managed to make friends all over town. Just pick a spot. If you are actually STAYING in Islamorada...well then...we'll call Mom's Taxi and hit them all! ha.
My favorite is No Name Pub on Big Pine Key. Really hard to find and incredibly good pizza. Also right next to a boat launch near some very good fishing. Bring your dollar bills
Coach: Do you know Bill (also goes by Catesby) and Katrina Wiatt who live on Conch Key?
Initially was planning on touring all the DC breweries with fam. Now canceled, will probably catch up on house stuff, blog posts, and try and get caught up on some work. I have a design development deliverable and need to issue a permit set for a brewery asap.
Hope there is some relaxing in there. We stocked up a bit, if we need to go out, we can, as I have no fear of the snow with my rig. Seems like the metro is going to be out of the question though.
Although not really in 'DC' but have you been to Ocelot Brewing Co in Dulles? Phenomenal IPA work out there!
I haven't been to Ocelot yet, though have had plenty of their beers already. I'm not much of an IPA drinker, more onto Malts. Though one of my clients is doing some magical stuff with hop forward beers.
I hear ya - this time of year, I like a nice dark beer. (Currently drinking a Ten Fidy)
Ocelot has a pretty good variety and their stouts and porters were pretty solid too - especially their Russian Imperial they had on tap last. Definitely worth a shot no matter what beer style you're into.
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout.
I picked up a Java from Three Notched that is pretty good. Made with espresso beans. We hit up Escutcheon, Backroom (the Belgian Strong was pretty nice, and they use herbs from their farm in the beers), Pale Fire (nice solid brewery), and Three Notched. Hit up Capital Ale House while in Harrisonburg too. Oh, and Jack Brown's Burger's and beers, which is a definite on the list of stop ins. I need to get to writing the blog post.
I have problems, haha.
Oh, about to send drawings out to permit for a brewery and meeting with another brewery in very early stages of planning later this week. Amazing that we are at an all time high and still growing.
While in Harrisonburg, did you go to Brothers?
As long as the power stays on, I am all set. God forbid I lose the power to endlessly stream shows and browse the web of snow adventures gone wrong.
I anticipate lots of drinking, snowman building and watching football assuming we don't loose power/cable...
If you have kids, try making some dragon eggs. Water balloons with a few drops of food coloring, left outside to freeze. The way the ice freezes outside to inside, it pushes the food coloring towards the center and makes a cool effect.
That, and you can call yourself the Father of Dragons.
this is pretty cool - Invent The Future
As exciting as it is to not have to go into the lab, this is me today.

I'm up in Charlottesville and I had to go into lab to take care of cells today. Went to bed at 230 and got up at 6 and caught the first bus in to lab. Got my work done by 830 and headed home. In all that time it never snowed and actually didn't start flurrying until 1030 or so. Moral of the story is I got up way to freaking early.
We are doing summer cookout food during the blizzard. My wife got a pork shoulder. We're having pulled pork, cole slaw and baked beans for dinner. I'll be washing that down with some Satan's Ponies. I think it's a great idea.
How are you cooking it? I've got a shoulder in the fridge and a crock pot, but I could always use advice on seasoning it.
I like the crock pot method as it is easy, but the over low and slow makes much better barbecue in my opinion. Lately, i've been doing a yellow mustard base, and then putting the seasoning on the outside. The mustard cooks away in the over, and leaves a nice 'bark' on the outside. Key to a nice bark is the right amount of brown sugar I believe.
That's the way I do it. Good rub, then very low and slow in the oven makes for a very easily pulled product. I like the consistency of the meat better than the crockpot cooked pork. Takes a while to cook, but mmm mmm good.
Agree completely. 12+ hours on the egg at 212 with applewood chips is the best, but I often hit the crock pot. I use about a 1/2 cup eastern style vinager suave in the bottom, and rub (meaning cake on a thick as I can get it) with 1/3 cup lowrey's seasoned salt, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and a 1/3 cup mixed garlic, herbs and spices from the spice grinder. It barks better on the grill, but it will in the crock pot, and it is the sugars. Either way it is done when tongs can pull out the blade cleanly.
Crock pot. 1/3 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 bottle bbq sauce. Salt, pepper, garlic, paprika, oregano, ground ginger. Cook on high for 4 hours, then low for 2. It's my mom's recipe. There are few things that get me more excited than my wife telling me she emailed my mom for a recipe.
Can you have your wife talk to my wife about this? May help out on the cooking mishaps- she can follow directions.
would this work for beef arm roast?
Use way different seasoning for beef in the crockpot. Dice onions, carrots and celery until bottom of pot is covered.. Add a little garlic, a bay leaf, and the liquid. I use either red wine, canned diced tomatoes, or balsamic vinager for the acid. Worchestchire sauce, A-1 or teriyaki for seasoning, molasses, honey or sugar for sweet. I usually do al tab of most of them. Mostly the acid stuff, to just half the veggies height. Add Some citrus zest if you have it. Rub the meat pretty heavy with coarse salt, black pepper and seasonings like wasabi powder, dried onion, garlic powder, red pepper (anywhere from sweet paprika to habanero depending on heat preference. Put the meat over the liquid to self baste and leave on low for 5-6 hours. You can put potatoes around the meet to roast and gravy the liquid to finish if you want. Or remove the meat after 4-5 hours, add a cup of quinoa, Buck wheat, or medium grain rice to the liquid, replace the meat and give it another hour if you want to add a starch and take advantage of flavors in the liquid.
You only use a half inch or so of liquid?
Crock pot is sealed. You get better flavor with a braise - minimum liquid, instead of a boil. You will be surprised home comes out of the meat and veggie. If I am adding a grain at the end as a side I sometimes need to hot chicken stock to the liquid (nuke it to boiling first) to get enough, but a shoulder has a lot of connective tissue, so a lot of liquid collegen cooks out and is full of flavor.
My worry was the crock pot getting to hot and boiling off the liquid and leaving you a bricket.
A good crock pot should seal tight enough on low you would have to cook for low for more than 6-8 hours to lose that much moisture. I need to turn it on at lunch, or use one of those on/off timers to turn it on then, for beef or it will overcook, but boiling it for that long will do the same, it just takes longer in the pot to boil when you add more water mass.
God I love the Key Play.
Come for football analysis, weather forecasts, fishing advice, and cooking tips and recipes.
Me coming to TKP is akin to Ron Swanson going to Food n Stuff.
Joe - here's a site request:
What about a "recipes" section? Sounds like we've all got some favorites (we could call them tailgating foods).
Maybe a link on the side or a drop down on the topic so you can search/sort when looking for something?
Good times. TKP rules!
Thanks, that sounds damn tasty, I know what I'm doing tomorrow.
You guys in the direct path of this thing be careful, and stay safe and warm. Extreme weather can do some scary things.
Baltimore Hokie checking in.

And so it begins....

This is about a month late, but I was a big fan of your Christmas lights shaped as a VT.
Mucho Gracias Senor. I was pretty proud of them....in fact, they're still up haha. Too lazy to take them down. If they get snow covered I might just turn them on for funsies. I'm sure it'll look cool in the snow.
If I ever leave my apartment in the next two days I'll look for it!
are you in the same complex or somewhere nearby?
I'm in RiverPlace West. I think we discovered this in the Beer thread. And just to make it really weird I'm pretty sure I saw you walking in a Tech sweatshirt a week ago or so. I drive a Honda Fit.

Oh man! I forgot about that...well remembered. Not sure if it was me or not...I don't keep track of what I'm wearing or when. I drive a green Toyota Tacoma...it has VT stickers on the back windows. I haven't noticed a honda Fit but if I see one I'll throw a head nod your way. Go Hokies!!
I just noticed that http://www.hokiesports.com/ has snow graphics right now. Kind of cool, actually.
This weekend Ill finish off the cases of Hofbrau Oktoberfest I bought back in September (I bought 6 cases).
I bought my 2 year old a shovel so he can come outside and "help" me shovel the snow as well.
Just finished a 12 hour shift. Back again tomorrow! I work for VDOT, but I don't push. Did anyone build that fort for me?
I did my good deed, and shoveled/pushed some idiots in SUV's out of an intersection.
Edit: posted to wrong forum
We are inviting anyone willing to walk through snow/ice over for a party,
Having gotten bored enough of being snowed in to clean the place yesterday, we might as well show it off. Hoping someone brings good Bourbon, as I finished of the Maker's, Woodford, and Wild turkey between unwinding after the ND game and Romcom with the Mrs yesterday night. At least there is beer, wine, gin, tequila, vodka, moonshine, cheap bourbon, rum and pretty liqueurs for the ladies martini's left.
Dang. I'd totally go if I could
Nobody brought bourbon. Out of moonshine now. Wish you were here - with bourbon. Having to make do with tequila, red wine, and not Marlboro reds. Never a good start to the second half. I guess that means roughing it. Make do with what you have.
I just walked 3.5 miles in about an hour and a half to get to my girlfriend's place as a surprise. There's BBQ in the crockpot so I think that was totally worth it.
Damn, man, is that all you got? I thought you said "party"!
Edit: forgot to hit reply to Kville.
