We. Need. Pictures. Of whatever this turns out to be.
My first thought is that we might end up needing to pay Sammy Watkins for his likeness...
And if we do that he'll be declared ineligible! Brilliant!
I'd buy one.
I know who our video guys are on here, but who are our picture guys?
I suppose it would be tough to use Exum's name, too, wouldn't it?
How about a picture of an island shaped like an X with an orange and maroon day care center, littered with little ibises, tigers, eagles, rams, pirates and of course..pachyderms!
I like this one, brilliant!
ok, been on the site for a long time but new to posting here. How exactly do I upload an image for this?
Use imgur.com to host the image and then copy and paste the HTML link for websites directly to your comment.
thanks dude. +1 for the help. t-shirt design to follow
and... here it is.
Won't be able to use the VT on the shoulder, or the tiger paw on the bib, but I like what you've done.
Thanks. Corrections Made
I like what you've done. I would only suggest somehow incorporating Exum's #1 or "Swag" in some way, just to make it a bit more specific to him and really bring out the theme.
Edit: how about a "swag flag" from the tree?
Updated
Flag wasn't working off the tree. so i put as badge where VT logo was. added a centaur as the logo on flag as well.
Could use something with "Swag1" daycare or something rather than the name Exum
I'm feeling a full clothing line to come out of this.
For the long and tall: The Logan Thomas Collection
For the swag: The Antone Exum Collection
For the thugging: The Cody Journell Collection
For the family: The Fuller's Collection
Just put a 1 on the back of the shirt like a jersey shirt as well
Does the baby need Sammy's signature hair?
Yes.
I didn't have time for hair before, but since you asked. Also added the back side and dropped the badge on the front. Tried to find room for the centaur logo but couldn't find anywhere I thought looked cool. Will look at it again later.
This is what

looks like!
What if instead of making it a silhouette of Exum on the back you make it a silhouette of Centaur-Exum wearing a #1 jersey.
haha... sure, will try. But it's 3:30 am where I live and I gots to get some sleep now. Should be able to do new update by tomorrow night though.
And in case anyone is wondering that is Sammy's real hair.
This is great, but I think the Exumtaur should take precedent on the back
I say we combine Exum's suggestions into "Playtime is over, kids."
But the rest of this shirt is golden thus far.
Just for fun...
Ya gotta love that he's participating in the design!
What about "It's nap time"
Hard to argue with the man himself. I choose a different wording though but still less aggressive, and now with more daycare participants. On the back are two options. Centaur Option and Exum Option. Open to suggestions on the wording and elsewise.
Option 1:

Option 2:

I'm definitely loving the centaur.
I would actually buy one of these. We should see if they violate any stupid NCAA rules.
I think Exum's silhouette may be an issue. It may be too representative but I took out all logos and just left colors. So maybe... everything else should be fine though.
I can't really tell, but what are on the bibs of the crying babies?
sorry, small resolution so overall image is not too big in comment frame.
foreground on right side, #2 Sammy Watkins with tiger
On left, facing to right, #80 Rashad Greene with baby native american
Center in background, #1 Stefon Diggs with turtle
as long as exum doesnt profit from them, i dont see why it would be a violation. i mean why should someone profit from their own likeness? makes no sense, that ncaa has it right.
and i would totally buy one of these
edit: supposed to be responding to your above comment about exum's silhouette. stellar work good sir
nope, cant use likeness to promote events or items either
Kam Chancellor almost got in a lot of trouble with this, but the NCAA determined the club using his likeness did so without his permission. With Exum tweeting, it is clearly not the case. I'd be careful with the Swag1 reference too, but not sure if that one would matter
edit: someone quoted the rules below
Also. Cannot give any thing to any scholarship athlete. It could be considered an extra "benefit".
Exumtaur FTW. Still a big fan of the logo you had on the flag, with the side silhouette of the Exumtaur. Agree with everyone else, though, that if the colors and style are a problem, leaving the "1" on the jersey should be fine. I don't think we need the SWAG1 though, I've not bought into the phrase. What about having the 'Tone loves the kids' on the other sleeve or across the bottom of the back?
quick replies to your comments:
1) Using the side silhouette from flag before was my first thought too, but it really didn't scream Hokies. So I created the Exum silhouette which would be more recognizable.
2) SWAG1 can be tossed. I am cool to add "Tone loves the kids" on the back instead.
3) Regarding NCAA issues: Colors seem like should be OK, but calling the centaur "EXUMtaur" would probably be an issue as it uses his name specifically.
So see the update at bottom of the thread. Maybe you will like it better. (With the change to SWAG1 in mind)
These are awesome. However, I just want to make sure that:
#1 - we do not violate any NCAA rules
#2 - Jeopardize Exum's eligibility in any way.
#3 - Make sure we jeopardize Sammy Watkins' eligibility.
Doesn't Sammy already do a good job at jeopardizing his eligibility?
"yessir...we've for some pot in the car"
"Is there pot in the caaaaar? Yes, there's pot in the caaaaar! I think the people down the hall know who you are....Careful what you carry....."
Steely Dan
Lets do it.
You guys are killing me...great stuff! "school's in session" is a great tag line too. Or, I like K.Fullers shirt he wore at a camp last year..."you reach, I teach". Go get'um Tone.
Here's a simpler option. I like it better actually. Anyway, last one before going to sleep. Let me know if you have any suggestions, or if you prefer previous ones.
The only way to know for sure would be to contact the VT Compliance Dept. Chances are they will tell you not to do it, but it's better to ask and get a no than not ask and screw Tone's eligibility. These shirts are AWESOME and I want to see them made, but with these compliance issues it's always better safe than sorry.
Here's what I'm using as reference:
http://www.athletics.vt.edu/compliance/boosters/brochure.pdf
Tim Parker is a good guy, I've spoken with him before. Whoever ends up producing the shirts really needs to reach out to him to be safe.
Here are some excerpts:
Because there is no official picture, name or logo, it may be okay. But since it's using his nickname, silhouette and he would have direct knowledge that such a shirt is being produced, I tend to doubt it (even though he's not making any money off of it).
Would this be considered to be using his appearance?
Not trying to be a party pooper or anything. I just want to bring this stuff up so Tone doesn't get screwed by the NCAA.
now the question is this. What would happen if a high quality picture of the graphics used were posted... and then people made the shirts for themselves using whatever custom tshirt vendor they like (millions of them online)? I dont think releasing fan art is against any rules...
I think that once we get on a small scale like that, it would probably be fine (or at least impossible to track).
Im hoping its not just impossible to track, as that would imply some wrong doing which I really dont want for Exum's sake.
That said, creating your own shirt from a fan made image should be ok (but Im no legal expert). I'd assume it would be the same as this: you can hire a company to paint a huge VT on your back patio, but a company couldnt sell a patio painted with a VT without licensing rights.
Yeah, I hear this. I don't want to get anywhere near his eligibility. So I think the nonspecific centaur is safe. As well as all the cartoon kids with hair to match the players. The question of using "Tone" anywhere on the shirt is still open, unless we have a silhouette centaur saying 'Don't take that tone with me!' to a crowd of screaming WR caricatures. Definitely get in touch with the compliance guy before selling any. But does it matter if they're made and not sold? Given away, aka promotional items?
pretty sure you cant use them as promotional items, NCAA sees this as having monetary value I believe. See club using Kam Chancellor image (w/o his consent) for promotional party a few years back
I think the key is to make references to Exum with out actually using his likeness. However the t-mobile shirts were done seemed to be ok. I remember seeing those all the time when I was in school, but dont remember their specificis
T-mobile shirts and remember the Ryan Williams for Heisman shirts. Those used his name and picture. I don't think it's that big of a deal, honestly.

I think the only thing that could make it a big deal is that he specifically asked for it. All these other shirts random people made without the student athlete's knowledge. This on Exum basically commissioned TKP to make.
True, let's just tell him to delete that tweet. Tell everybody that retweeted it, to delete the retweets. Delete this thread and act like none of this ever happened.
Exum island day care shirts? What you talking bout Willis.
I'm in. This will totally work. Once something is on the internet you can ALWAYS get rid of it without a trace. Thank God that Al Gore put that feature in.
Yeah, this is the thing that's holding me back. All of the Tyrod/RMFW shirts were made just by random people with no knowledge (that we know of, at least) of the shirts.
Yah, gotta say that I am mostly just doing these for shits and giggles. Never thought of actually putting them on a shirt. I will do a full silhouette with number only and one using a different centaur (non-likeness) as well later tonight. For those wanting a shirt, if people can figure out what's safe then I'll do that version in high resolution and you can print yourself.
I think if you were to ask the Compliance office then they would always lean towards NO, so would be good to ask someone in the know outside of the school as well to get an unbiased opinion. Obviously there have been shirts in past that have been in this neutral zone of compliance and not sure those were ever passed through the schools approval. For Chancellor, didn't they use a real picture of him?
Maybe just use his number and silhouette. Write out One and One.......... Makes Seven. That way he can buy it as well. People wore T-mobile shirts all while I was in school. Hell, Marcus had a Superman symbol made with the 5 as the S haha.
the super 5 shirt was also remade for tyrod, still have the original one
This probably wasn't technically compliant, but I bought it out of the back of a dude's car in the Cassell lot one afternoon. As long as it doesn't become a big thing, I think we could probably get away with it pretty easily.
Let's make shirts featuring the full name and a clear picture of the best players on each team we play this year. Under the picture it should say in quotes, "I'm getting paid for this shirt." Then we report it to NCAA. Someone get started on a McCarron or Yeldon shirt, pronto.
Why McCarron or Yeldon? Let's just make both.
We can have Musburger in the background trying to spit some game at K. Webb...
If anything comes into questions it's the fact that the back has Antone's number on it, kind of identifying him. Other than that it sounds like the rest of it is good to go.
And I still like "Playtime is over kids."
Time for your nap?
You can always give the generic retort that the NCAA and schools use to sell jerseys: it doesn't have their name on it, could have been any number 1.
yea just left overs from the eric green days...
nah that aint exum's number that is Macho Harris' number...wink...wink.
These shirts remind me of how I wish I was able to buy a "I'd rather have a big Vick than a little Weinke" tshirt I saw back in college!
Yeah, every once in awhile I ebay search for this shirt.
Yeah there's few exceptions where i'd buy a shirt off of ebay, but that would qualify!
Been busy with work these past two days so haven't had much time to work on new options. But here is another more simplified one, in color scheme. I think it covers what everyone is saying. I used RealDeihl's suggestion for catch phrase on front that references the daycare element. And then added "Extaur Light" on back to reference our Metallica opening and the EXUMTAUR himself.
I like it. Make the front of this the back, and then the island with Sammy and friends the front. With ExumIslandDayCare on the sleeve or something. Then send it to the printing press!
