Every time Justin Fuente's dad answers the phone when Justin calls home back in Tulsa, Okla., the first question never has anything to do with how the new job in Blacksburg is going. There are more pressing matters to address.

Jim Fuente expects an update on his son's golf swing. Actually, the same inquiry applies if any male member of Justin's family picks up the phone.

Interesting tidbit here:

"I honestly don't believe that it was any kind of slam dunk that Justin would've become the head coach at Virginia Tech if he couldn't have kept Bud," said Blankenship, who after getting fired at Tulsa in December 2014, accepted a role as an offensive analyst last season at Memphis under Fuente.

"His private discussions were that this was a real linchpin in this thing happening. I'm not saying it wouldn't have happened, but I'm saying Justin wasn't real interested in trying to rebuild a defense that had some notoriety."

Fuente got his wish. Foster stayed on board.

This is the kind of quote that makes me wish I could have been a fly on the wall during the process:

Fuente: Being head coach at VT, playing at Bristol and South Bend are cool and all that, but I want Bud!
Whit: OK.......let me call you back in a few.

Whit: Well. We think we got our guy to replace Beamer.....and it's not you. But I've hit a snag. He won't come unless you stay as DC.........Bud?......are you still there?.........
