Between the pressures of National Signing Day and the sudden departure of longtime DBs coach Torrian Gray, it's been a chaotic week in Blacksburg, but Justin Fuente's staff isn't slowing down.
Instead, they're inviting some of the top prospects from the class of 2017, and even a few from the classes of 2018 and 2019, to come to Blacksburg for a chance to get acquainted with Fuente and company.
In total, The Key Play has been able to confirm that just over a dozen recruits will make the trek down to Southwestern Virginia for the weekend, as the Hokies work to lay some early groundwork after reeling in a less-than-ideal crop of prospects in 2016.
| Name | Class Year | 247Sports Composite | Position | High School | Hometown |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rayshard Ashby | 2017 | 3-Star | LB | Lloyd C. Bird | Richmond, Va. |
| D'Jon Askew | 2017 | Unranked | ATH | Frank W. Cox | Virginia Beach, Va. |
| Armani Chatman | 2018 | Unranked | WR | Bayside | Virginia Beach, Va. |
| Austin Connor | 2017 | Unranked | WR | Dutch Fork | Irmo, S.C. |
| Eric Crosby | 2017 | 4-Star | DT | Ocean Lakes | Virginia Beach, Va. |
| Drake DeIuliis | 2017 | 3-Star | TE | Providence | Charlotte, N.C. |
| Alex Faniel | 2017 | 3-Star | QB | Glen Allen | Richmond, Va. |
| Devyn Ford | 2019 | Unranked | ATH | North Stafford | Stafford, Va. |
| Tyjuan Garbutt | 2017 | 4-Star | DE | Riverbend | Fredericksburg, Va. |
| Chris Hunt | 2017 | 3-Star | CB | Bayside | Virginia Beach, Va. |
| Devon Hunter | 2017 | 4-Star | WR/S | Indian River | Chesapeake, Va. |
| Teradja Mitchell | 2018 | Unranked | OLB | Bayside | Virginia Beach, Va. |
| Davondre Robinson | 2017 | 4-Star | S | Lake Marion | Santee, S.C. |
| Jordan Williams | 2017 | 3-Star | DE | Frank W. Cox | Virginia Beach, Va. |
All but three of the attendees hail from Virginia, with three ranking among the top 10 in the state in the 247Sports composite rating, making it clear that Fuente's bunch are hoping to put an early emphasis on building up their in-state ties.
ATH Devon Hunter of Chesapeake's Indian River HS, DE Tyjuan Garbutt Fredericksburg's Riverbend HS and DT Eric Crosby of Virginia Beach's Ocean Lakes HS have all visited Tech multiple times at this point, but this weekend will give them all their first chances to see how the new staff has already started to reshape the program in Blacksburg.
DE Jordan Williams of Virginia Beach's Cox HS and QB Alex Faniel of Richmond's Glen Allen HS fall just outside the top 10 in the state β the pair's ranked 15th and 16th overall respectively β but both will also be key visitors for the staff to impress.
For his part, Williams says he's hoping to see more of the "academic buildings" on campus, after camping at Tech last summer.
Meanwhile, Faniel wants to use the visit to "hopefully see if I'm still wanted at Tech" following the regime change. He says he's already met with both Fuente and offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen at his school, but this will be his first chance to meet the rest of the new staff.
Some of the younger Virginia visitors will likely receive plenty of attention from the staff as well. 2018 LB Teradja Mitchell of Virginia Beach's Bayside HS has visited Tech before, but this time around he'll be traveling with fellow 2018er and teammate WR Armani Chatman.
Chatman was only offered by the Hokies last month, and he says he's hoping to "learn more about the education, staff, (and) recruits in my class" and "hopefully we can see the basketball team play (against) Clemson" on Saturday.
However, for all of the talented in-state prospects that will be making the trip, some will be giving the weekend a miss.
2017 DE Yetur Matos of Fredericksburg's Chancellor HS won't be among the visitors, according to Chancellor assistant coach Patrick Lilly, but he is planning on coming down "for a more intimate trip another weekend." Lilly added that Chancellor QB Jason Brown, DT George Brown and WR EJ Jenkins are set to visit for Tech's junior day on Feb. 27, and he feels "EJ and Jason have real potential for offers come spring/summer."
John Harris, an assistant coach at Woodbridge's C.D. Hylton HS, lamented that he was hoping to bring some of his charges β including 2017 TE/DE Jarrett Powell β to the event. But since Gray served as one of Harris' main contacts on staff, he's currently unsure whether they'll be making the trip since he hasn't had much of a chance to speak with Fuente and company.
Yet for all the staff's in-state focus, the Hokies will make plenty of time for some of their Carolina visitors as well.
Fuente recently headed down to Charlotte to see 2017 TE Drake DeIuliis of Providence HS in person, offering him by phone after meeting him briefly on Jan. 25, and the pair will get their first chance to spend some substantial time together this weekend.
"I didn't expect (the offer) at all, and to hear it come from the head coach was quite an experience," DeIuliis said. "He sounds like a great guy, he knows what he's doing and he's really excited about the new program, and I can't wait to get to know him a little bit better."
But while he has yet to get to know Fuente, he feels he knows plenty about the program in general.
"They're known for a great fan tradition, and the stadium is crazy," DeIuliis said. "The history of Frank Beamer is awesome, and I think it'll get carried on very well and I can't wait to see what comes from them in the future."
In fact, the 6'6", 204-pound junior says he heard from Beamer several times when he was still with Tech, and DeIuliis even got to watch the legendary Hokie's final home game against UNC.
"It was awesome," DeIuliis said. "The reputation of the fans is definitely true, they're live and active, it was just really cool to experience."
One of his fellow visitors at that game, 2017 WR Austin Connor of Irmo, S.C.'s Dutch Fork HS, will also be making the trip this weekend, but he doubts that it will measure up to the emotions he saw on the field in November.
"I don't know how to exactly describe it, but you could tell the coaches and players and everyone loved him and hated to see him go," Connor said. "He left a legacy."
That was his second trip to see a game in Lane Stadium, as he got to visit for the Duke game as well, but he says the Hokies only offered him last month. Connor says Fuente swung by his high school a few weeks back, then "shocked" him with his first offer.
"He told me a little bit about what they're gonna do and how they're gonna change the offense to a spread offense, and have more receivers on the field, so I'm looking forward to that," Connor said. "He seems like a great coach with the way he turned the Memphis program all the way around, so from what I've seen, he's a really good coach."
This weekend, Connor hopes to "actually see the school for once and meet the new coaches," while DeIuliis said he's looking forward to the "chance to get to know the coaches more, sit down, watch some film" and "see the facilities and see how they run things."
For DeIuliis, who counts schools like Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Boston College among the schools interested in him, the opportunity will be especially valuable, since he says Tech is one of his "top" options already.
"(I'm looking for) a great coaching staff that shows everything up front and doesn't try to hide anything from the recruits, a longstanding tradition, a great atmosphere," DeIuliis said. "Just overall somewhere I have a chance to succeed and somewhere that will help benefit my future and everything that comes with it."

This is what we need after a week of angst on the board and in Hokieland. What would be awesome is one of the 4* giving us a commitment this weekend!
lol....commitment
Commitment issues?:-)
Reservations Please
Really want Hunter, let's start getting those 757 recruits!
Clemson is the leader there. a lot of hype around Clemson/FSU in VA for the top kids again this cycle.
Yulee going to Marshall is huge. There would have been wayy too much pull at Bama
Not sure if we get any commits this weekend but it wouldn't shock me if Jordan Williams from Cox pulled the trigger.
How is Devyn Ford Unranked? His film is impressive. Kid is just a freshmen he is going to be a stud if he keeps at it like he did this year.
Not sure rankings for class of 2019 kids have come out yet.
They have not.
Agreed- he is a very promising player. Fuente has a top running back target each of the next couple of seasons. Laborn this cycle, Ricky Slade in 2018, and Ford in 2019.
Would love to land one or more of those guys.
Ford would be a great get. A real Model A player.
These pun threads are really going to push me over the Edge one day
I'm really thinking we should be working to Escape threads where puns are the main Focus.
I don't disagree. That being said, however, when you leave what is known for an Excursion into the unknown there is no guarantee that what you find is better than what you left.
Ohhhhhh I get it....
TOYOTA!
Have I mentioned how thrilled I am that we finally got in on this kid? (I have. A lot.) Killed my soul to watch him tear up turf every Friday, knowing we had yet to match other P5 offers.
Fuentes is definitely building a multi year power house program. It's nice to see he's planning to have a strong program year after year! Keep it up coach.... Don't forget to have a matching O-line!
Really it just seems like rankings are out there for kids so young I just assumed they were ranking freshmen now, thanks for the knowledge.
Let kids be kids. I vote no rankings until kids are at least in their junior years. I really dont want to see the day when fans start looking at where an 8th grader goes to high school because it will have an impact on his development and pipeline to their college.
Too late!!! That has been going on for a few years!
Some of these kids get free rides on the basis of these early rankings.
Are we the only fanbase where killjoys are always trying to stamp their confused blend of morality on other people? Sign of the times these days. 51% means you get to lord over someone
live and let live be glad that someone gets such a great opportunity at such a young age
You mean like Salem does with High School ball in VA?
David Sills verbaled to USC six years ago yesterday.
After the first few highlights I just saw a guy with speed. And while speed is great, I'd like an RB with some physicality. Then at about 1:08 when he runs over a dude:

Thought the same thing and came away incredibly impressed with his speed and just overall athleticism. As a freshman, no less. Can't wait until he's a senior to see what he will become, and really hoping we are lucky enough to get him to come to the good guys.
Why does everyone else on the field run so slow LOL! He gets a lot of big holes to run through - are we recruiting any of the OL guys?
I only see one LB in that list. Oh God, we better freak the eff out now!
There are two. One is OLB.
There are also no OL on that list. We should get our pitchforks ready
Don't mind me...
Deep breath in, hold, and now

I think my heart just stopped.
Garbutt likes VT a lot.
I hope you are right. He had been tweeting some Pitt stuff, and that is one kid I do not want to lose to Narduzzi. Hopefully they can get back in the mix with Villan too.
That is per one of his teammates
His Twitter banner is now Maryland.
Maryland? Really? Just Wow.
Could be in reference to Coach Durkin.
I believe he's talking about the rapper lil durk.
Good call. My mind went straight to Durkin when I saw the twitter header.
Any word on Garbutt's speed? He definitely displays it in his film! You have to be impress with a kid that can play DE & WR. Speed+Physicality is deadly. Any early thoughts on where he'd fit in on a Foster led defense?
Like to see Ellis Brooks from Benedictine get up for a visit, seems like a Duke kid all the way but have to get back into Benedictine with all the talent they have produced recently.
Alex this is some great work. You are really on top of things and being able to pull all of this together is truly impressive. Thanks!!
We are listed on Ryan Jones top 5 list, he is a 4* WR from Charlotte who is announcing today at 11:30. I don't think we will get him, Tenn and Clemson seem to be the favorites. We can hope.
He is a 2017 kid right? Still time.
Am I the only one that thinks a 8+ win season will mean more to these kids than most of the phone calls? They want to know they are going to a team going in the right direction.
Yes, still would rather he sign with us.Rather battle to hold him than to flip him.
Just committed to UNC.
UNC gets another one. That gives them five 4* recruits already for the 2017 cycle. Off to a hot start.
even though we weren't expected to get this guy, the fact that commits keep choosing unc is troubling. I don't mind losing guys we offered to sec schools or the like, but losing them to fellow acc schools hurt quite a bit. The fact that unc had a great season last year and is pulling in guys away from us shows me that we have to get our act together and put W's on the record, otherwise this trend is going to continue considerably, punching us in the gut every recruiting period. Gotta pick it up in every facet of our program. And ASAP.
I won't say that winning cures all ills (it doesn't) but it certainly can't hurt us. I happen to believe that winning on Saturdays is the most important and achievable short-term goal right now. Winning will make everything else much easier. If we can win 8-9 games this year and then get into the double digits in 2017 that will do wonders for us in many many ways. It will make Whit's job of raising money easier. That should then result in the opportunity for improved resources which could lead to even more goodies for us. Winning isn't the only thing that needs to be done to grow and improve this program but it is the easiest way to make that mountain we have to climb a little less daunting.
I also believe that with our schedule this team can win the games we need to win over the next couple of years. The right coaching staff and approach can make this 6-7 win team a 8-10 win team in a year or 2. That is paramount. It may sound silly to say but winning games on Saturdays should absolutely be the main focus of the coaching staff if they want to take this program to new heights. Win on Saturday and everything else will fall into place much more easily.
Well, you go to UNC and they hand you a degree only having to take half of the required classes. They are a party school a lot closer to the beach than Tech is.
"Committed"
I'd love to see a stat on how many kids stay "committed" to the school they pick when they "commit" 12 months in advance. He is 16. Who knows what will happen if Alabama, Michigan, and tOSU come knocking.
Im pretty sure the industry accepted statistic is...
Did this guy tell you that? Because that stat kind of smells like Indian food wrapped in a diaper.

http://www.si.com/more-sports/2012/01/20/commitment-project
I have a feeling that number is higher for recent classes but that's just based on anecdotal evidence.
As we've seen, 'committed' means 'committed for now, until I change my mind'. LOL. But sad...
May be true, but I wonder how many of these happened after the coach decomitted from the program? Often there are legitimate reasons for the players actions.
Also gives them 4 of the top 5 prospects in their state.
Doing a lot better job of locking down in-state talent than VT for the past few years... and facing pretty much the same competition.
Worrisome that an assistant coach from a school that we have pulled numerous kids from over the years wasn't one of the first to get a phone call after TG news was out, especially if he was supposed to bring a group of kids down for this weekend. Hopefully the coaching staff rectifies that issue today.
I'm surprised we're only bringing in a little over a dozen kids, I would have like too seen many many more.
I would assume this is mostly the "big names" and the ones that Alex could get confirmed. I think the number might be close to 30-40 kids in total.
This is correct. And it's almost always the case some of these kids don't show up because a ride fell through or some other circumstance.
I coach track in SC, and saw Austin Connor (Dutch Fork HS) run some 100 m and 200 m races. He has some wheels and was dusting people even during his freshman year! Love that CJF is dipping into the Columbia area high schools.
I'm really hoping we start to pipeline more often from Georgia and South Carolina. SEC country, and a lot of solid talent, even at the mid-level. Have certainly noticed a trend back into Florida.
A bit of confirmation that Khalan Laborn will be on campus today.
Definitely helps that Beckett and Hubbard will be here to be in these players' ears.
Evan Watkins Crystal balled Faniel to us.
http://247sports.com/Player/Alex-Faniel-51372
It will be interesting to see what we do with QB this year. If Evans is the guy, a recruit in this class could start as a Tr-Soph or r-Fr. But if Fuente likes Lawson or Jackson, may just look for a QB who isn't expected to start early in his career.
No idea how Faniel fits in those categories this early in his recruitment.
I'd bet a good chance he moves to TE unless Fuente is super high on him. With Fuente's known name as a QB guru I think we could land a pretty highly touted guy in 2018
Agreed.
Khalan Laborn was being personally escorted at the hoops game by Burden. Others were just hanging with the rest of the recruits with Wiles and Cornelson seated near them. Laborn obviously a huge target
Pulling out all the stops for Laborn.
Beamer took pictures with a few guys that got posted, like to see these kids still respect the legend.
I thought Beamer doesn't recruit
Now he starts!
I don't recognize that guy from the football staff page on Hokiesports.com Is he a GA or something?
Rumors are flight tracker shows he is in town to interview for the DB coaching job.
Awesome that we had a great basketball game that we won with a full crowd for the recruits to take in as well.
Didn't hear a lot about Devon Hunter this weekend. Anybody hear anything?
I believe Hunter is visiting VT next weekend, but I'm not for sure on that.
yea he rescheduled, which is good considering we don't have a DB coach
thank you! I wasn't informed. Would give you a leg if I could
