Hokies fans, Tech returns home off a bad roadtrip hoping to turn their season back around against the Clemson Tigers. The Hokies arguably suffered their worst loss to Syracuse last time out, giving up a nine point lead with under two minutes to go in the game. Some terrible mental mistakes cost this team a shot at a big win. Moving forward, they have what many would tab the surprise team of the conference this season. Clemson struggled in its out of conference slate, going 7-5, with losses to UMass, Minnesota, Alabama, South Carolina and Georgia. Zero quality wins in that stretch either so most people thought that Clemson would fold under the pressure of increased competition from the ACC schedule, but they havent, only having lost on the road and two of those to ranked teams in #7 UNC and #13 UVA. The Tigers have conference wins over #8 Miami, #9 Duke, #16 Louisville, and Syracuse. They currently are tied for third in the conference. This won't be a pushover game for the Hokies, even with the Maroon Effect support from the crowd today. Hopefully the crowd is crazy as there was the off-chance that the football recruits visiting Tech this weekend were going to be in attendance at todays game.

On to the show, led by Jaron Blossomgame, (#5) Junior Forward, 6'7, 215 Lbs, who so far this season has put up 17.2 PPG, 7.1 RPG, and 1.5 APG. This is the Clemson version of Zach Leday. He does a bit of everything, if anything he may be more involved than Leday because plenty of times Blossomgame will be found bringing the ball up the court. He does just about everything right on both ends of the floor. He shoots 42% from outside and 77% from the charity stripe, while also giving his team a steal and almost two blocks per game on the other end. If there was someone that Buzz should send Allen after early and often with his drives to the basket, this is the guy. Get him in early foul trouble and Clemson has a hard time managing without him. Leave him in and it could be a long day in Cassell. Blossomgame also has the knack for getting to the free throw line, with more than double the attempts of any of this teammates at almost 8 per game. Leday will probably be responsible for guarding him which should be a fun matchup to watch.

After Blossomgame, the Tigers fall off, with only one other in double figures this season. Donte Grantham, (#15) Sophomore Forward, 6'8, 205 Lbs, adds 10.3 PPG, 3.8 RPG and 2.2 APG. He seems to very much be a tweener so even with the height differential I would expect Bibbs or Hudson to guard Grantham in todays game. He just doesn't seem to have the confidence to go inside and make a big impact and it would allow Buzz to keep the unreliable bigs off the court when Blackshear sits.

There are three other Tigers that Tech will need to be aware of today. Avry Holmes, (#12) Junior Guard, 6'2, 205 Lbs, brings 9.8 PPG, 2.4 RPG, and 2.5 APG so far this season. Holmes and Grantham are the two we will definitely need to focus on outside the perimeter as they take the majority of Clemson's attempts from outside. Essentially they average 10 attempts per game, hitting three to four of them.
Jordan Roper, (#20) Senior Guard, 6'2, 165 Lbs and the emotional leader of this team. He doesn't contribute as much as he used to but is critical for this team defensively as well as its top distributor in the passing game. Roper brings 9.7 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and 4 APG. Typically at the top of the key you will see a passing of the ball backnforth between Roper and Blossomgame until one finds an opening to penetrate the lane. Blackshear and Pierce have to release cleanly on screens today or they will quickly be in foul trouble.

The last Clemson starter is Larry Nnoko, (#35) Senior Center, 6'10, 255 Lbs, who comes in averaging 8.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG, and 1 assist. Nnoko is more the big body rather than a devastating talent, but he can still find ways to hurt the Hokies, especially like Plumlee fom Duke did. We can ill afford to leave him unattended down low where he can dominate the basket. The question here will be how long is Blackshear able to stay out there to counteract this big opponent.
When the Hokies are on offense, expect to see almost exclusively man to man from the Tigers. Clemson is notorious for flying to the ball, hands in face causing a ton of turnovers. On offense, expect to the see the Tigers run a lot of high ball screens attempting to get Blossomgame isolated to create a trip into the lane to either score or get fouled, Tech will need to be prepared to clog the lane to force jumpers and off balanced shots. This Clemson team, while they have some shooters from range, don't usually make the three pointer their bread and butter so the Hokies need to make sure the Tigers keep it that way as we all know how painful it is when another team heats up from distance.
Home game, coming off two bad losses, Cassell Colisseum rockin Maroon Effect and having the full student section back for the first time in a while, Tech manages to shock Clemson today 83 – 73. I know, just asking to get beaten up over this prediction with how the road trip went but if they can play the way they did against Syracuse than they should be able to win this game going away.

Come on we need this one after dropping our last 5 (6?) straight.
Y'know, I think we can win this game. We're due, I hope, but more than that, we keep playing tough teams and we're playing them tough. Our guys have kept coming back and back and back after tough losses, I think we'll do that again today and come out on top.
And yes, I'm feeling pretty good right now.
I hope there are lots of students there hopped up on free coffee and donuts
Apparently Buzz didn't ask Coach K for any help with his emoji game...
Anyone have link to find local channel RSN?
http://www.hokiesports.com/mbasketball/huddle/ Should have it for you
No excuse why a game featuring Clemson in SC is being shown on a none HD channel, #goacc.
Offense is getting a ton of open looks. At some point you have to think they will start falling. Good ball movement today (so far).
This game isn't very pretty, is it?
At least they're shooting almost as badly as we are.
First team to heat up and open a ~12 pt. lead wins.
Painful that we are once again missing a ton of shots from inside six feet
Have to get into the body of these bigs rather than letting them swat extended balls away
We're 8th in the country in free throws made....which is interesting since we're only 212th in free throw percentage.
Just means we have been good at getting fouled but not actually shooting free throws.
It's improved as the seasons gone on right? Seems that way at least.
Wow. If we were just around 100th or so in FT% it'd probably be the difference in a couple games.
Feels like football "if we just had the 50th best offense we'd be top 10"
I really like the all maroons at home. Hopefully they can wake up offensively and defend the Cassel.
I don't like the mass subs every 4 mins or so. It's too disruptive and the gameflow just seems off because of it. We're lucky we got it back to 2 at the half
What is the score?
24-22 Clemson at half.
We can win this game.
TYRONE sighting!
Hudson looking like Deron Washington jumping out of the gym
BOOM
Someone has to Gif that. Buzz toweling of the ref.
Tyrone gives and gives away
Need to put them away now
Buzz toweling off the ref .gif haha
And gives again.
Great defense and heart.
4 point swing on the hustle play by LeDay
Allen went to sleep there. Can't keep making mental mistakes
That should have been a push off foul on Nnoko
Please don't choke this game away...please...
Why do we take our foot off of the gas pedal when we have a late lead?
I can't believe how bad we are when we have a lead. It's incredible the difference our team plays when we are 10 pts down than 10 pts up. I don't understand it.
It's as if we lose our entire offensive identity when we have a lead.
Two strong buckets there. Big.
Wow. Has to be without a doubt and you can't tell me that was without a doubt and then to give them six seconds to call timeout just wow
That was 6 seconds... Unbelievable
That was at least 6 seconds!!!
And then we allow that....
No way was he in the act of shooting there
Nor was he fouled
Oh no.
Why was Henry out on the perimeter? He can't run with their guards.
I think Buzz essentially told him to make them earn it at the line and it worked
Got em. Didn't think it would be this stressful especially when we built the ten point lead but it's a win all the same.
I need a drink
Give Leday a trophy for all of those clutch free throws!
Got UVA next, let's get back to .500
Buzzketball Win!!!

Can I say, VICTORY UP THE ASS BABY!!!! WHOOO!!!
Can you?
For once, I would like to win one by like 8 or 10 so I can breathe at the end
VT B=HEART ATTACKS
If Clemson doesn't make the Tourney because of this loss that would make me happy. Our loss to them a few years back kept us out (although we should have gotten in.)
Even though I'm pretty sure VCU took our spot that year, and they went on to the final four.
Yes they did, but if we won at Clemson late in the season we would have definitely gotten in.
I am really excited that the ACC tourney is at the Verizon Center this year. We obviously won't win it (sans a miracle) but regardless of where we end up, I think we could win a game or two
We've proven that we can be competitive to say the least! I seem to recall a 2008 University of Georgia team that was mediocre all season and found a way to win the SEC Championship. They were just hot at all the right times in that tournament.
Not likely that we'd do that (since the SEC isn't exactly known for b-ball outside of UF and UK), but the fact that we've been competitive in almost every conference game we played gives me hope we could be dangerous
Not to mention we should be able to take that building over. The first round game should essentially be a home game for us depending on the matchup
yea thats very true. I know a bunch of my friends are going and taking that day off to watch day 1 and hopefully day 2 games!
Outside of of the Duke game, we have pretty much been competitive in all of our losses which makes me optimistic that anything is possible
Let's not forget that Duke lives and dies by the 3 pointer. When they're on, they are incredibly difficult to beat. If they're off, well... that's another story...
I am just hoping that first matchup against Duke was the former
Not to mention the fact that Chris Clark may very well be back at by then which gives us some more length and depth. I think we are one of those teams that no one will want to be playing.
Has there been an update on Clarke lately? I thought the initial release mentioned he was out 'indefinitely' which I assumed would be the entire season.
EDIT: Out of curiosity I went backed and looked at the initial news release and it did mention he was 'out indefinitely.'' However the injury did occur prior to the WVU game (Dec 30). The Miami game at the end of the season (prior to ACCT) would be 9 weeks which I would think is within the recovery timeline.
But, there is also an opportunity to redshirt Clarke if the Hokies play in at least 3 postseason games. We are guaranteed 1 with the ACCT and could be planning on playing postseason (CBI or Vegas) just to keep his eligibility. I wonder if that changes things on whether to bring him back.
I heard he just has started to practice and should be ready in 10-14 days.
Great news - I guess they are not looking at a possible redshirt since it is not a guarantee.
From your timeline, I think the projected return would probably be the Wake Forest game on Feb 28 or the BC game on Feb 23rd, but he could possibly return with limited minutes for the FSU game on Feb 20th (12 days of practice).
Our toughest remaining games are probably our next 2. I really like the chances of an NIT possibly if we can get Clarke back playing significant minutes for the final 5 games which I think are all winnable.
Including the ACCT, I think we need 4 more wins to be on the NIT bubble. 6 more wins would secure a bid.
Everything's just a little bit better when Hokies win.
Much better 2nd half with LeDay, Allen, and Hudson attacking to create offense. The ball just swung around the perimeter too much in the 1st half going nowhere. And as frustrating as it is to see a 12 pt lead with 7 mins left dwindle away, give Clemson credit. Nnoko was a beast out there today and his defense played a huge roll in taking away our lead. Even with the Clemson run (and a terrible 5 second no call)though, we stayed composed and got the win. That's great to see considering the loss at Cuse could easily have lingered mentally.
Hopefully Buzz brings up film of Nnoko when we are preparing to play bigs. Our guys have to learn to protect the ball until they get into the body of a big like that so he gets in early foul trouble. Nnoko had gone nine straight games getting four or five fouls each game before today. Those little things game to game make the difference between outside looking in and a tourney team. Glad we found a way to overcome it today.
Great game, great atmosphere, great heart all around by the team. I can't express enough how much I enjoy watching Zach LeDay play. He is everything now that Jeff Allen wanted to be and I love him for it. Sure we can sit here and talk about how we blew a 12 point lead late, but I believe Clemson is a genuinely very good team. They are a very big team and after watching them for the first time today all season, I am not surprised they knocked off several of the perennials of the ACC. Total team effort and I hope the football recruits that were in the house enjoyed it as much as the fans did. Let's shock the world (again) Tuesday night in Hooville.
That too. Great work tonight, VT crowd! Now let's sell out the last home game of the year!
Good god Hudsons dunk.
Great win tonight, even better work by Seth Allen. The pass he made late in the shot clock to Hudson for an easy bucket was a pass he wouldn't have made even two weeks ago. Buzz even called it the play of the game.
Great tweet here by @KevaneyMartin that includes Buzz's audio playing overtop the highlight:
Before the Pitt/Syracuse/Clemson stretch of games I wondered if we could sneak out a win in one of those three. I really thought it could be signs of a step forward if we did. Man am I happy we got the W today.
I definitely agree with that and thought the exact same thing when LeDay dove on the ground for that loose ball. It's the little things in basketball that often separate losing and winning. This kinda made my day that Buzz said that was his play of the game. Love it.
