2017 DE Tyjuan Garbutt Commits to Tech on Blacksburg Visit

The Hokies added a major in-state commitment

Tyjuan Garbutt (right) [@tyjuangarbutt4]

The Hokies' 2017 class just doubled in size, courtesy of a major in-state commitment from DE Tyjuan Garbutt of Fredericksburg's Riverbend HS.

Garbutt announced his Tech commitment while on his visit to Blacksburg Saturday afternoon, becoming just the second member of Tech's 2017 class.

The decision comes very early in the process for Garbutt, who's rated a 4-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite ranking, but he says that now he's decided to jump on board with Justin Fuente and company, he won't be going anywhere.

"See, I've always been the type of person where, if I give somebody my word, I give somebody my word," Garbutt said. "My commitment is my commitment, and I committed to Blacksburg, the Hokies and Virginia Tech."

Garbutt says the reason he can be so definitive about his decision roughly a full year away from National Signing Day 2017 is simple — Tech's coaching staff, particularly Fuente, Bud Foster and Charley Wiles, made him feel at home in Southwestern Virginia.

"I had the best relationship with these coaches than with any other coaches, I think that's really the main, important thing," Garbutt said. "Not only staying home, but who do you have relationships with other than football? I feel these coaches are going to take care of me and want the best for me, and I'm going to maximize my potential playing underneath Coach Wiles and Coach Foster and Coach Fuente."

Coming into the visit, Garbutt says he told his high school coach that he "thought Tech was the place for me," and he followed up with Foster ahead of the trip, "just letting him know that I was really considering coming here."

But once he got back on campus and met Fuente, he knew his decision was final.

"I went up to Coach Fuente's office and I talked to him and told him," Garbutt said. "He told he was fired up, because I'm his first commit under him in this class. (Stonewall Jackson HS DB) Devante Smith has been committed for a minute now, so I was Coach Fuente's first commit while he was head coach."

While Garbutt feels that his relationship with Fuente is "getting stronger," he stressed that his ties with Foster were a key part of his decision. Foster's been recruiting him for years now, and Garbutt says he consistently came away impressed with his character.

"Every time me and him talk when I go up there, we don't just talk about football, he actually asks, 'How's your family doing? How's everything going?'" Garbutt said. "Really football is probably a 50-50 conversation about football and life in general and how I'm doing and how everybody in my family's doing, so it's nice to know that he cares about me. I know he's going to treat me like I'm a part of his family."

Family is clearly an important factor for Garbutt — he says he consulted with both his parents and his grandfather before making the decision — but he notes that it was undoubtedly his decision to stay in-state.

"I talked to my family and I told them 'I think I'm gonna stay home and play for Virginia Tech,'" Garbutt said.

Foster is likely already salivating about where Garbutt, who's the eighth ranked player in Virginia according to the 247Sports composite, can fit in his scheme. Though he mainly plays defensive end at Riverbend, the 6'4", 222-pound junior says he could see himself switching positions down the line.

"I talked to Coach Foster, and he was just telling me that it sort of depends on what my body does from here to when I get there," Garbutt said. "If I grow some more and get bigger and all, then I'll probably stay at D-end, but if my height doesn't come with it, he said he thinks with the type of player I am, I could still play D-end, but I could also play linebacker because of my athleticism and how I move in space."

But until he can get to Tech and start finding the right fit with Foster, Garbutt says he'll be working tirelessly to get other in-state prospects to join him in Blacksburg.

"I already told (Fuente) 'We're going to get Virginia Tech back to national contenders,'" Garbutt said. "I said I'm gonna help recruit all the best players around me. A couple players follow me and we talk on Twitter, some of the best players in the state, and some players in my area also. I'm trying to make it well known that Virginia Tech is going to rise and we're ready to get back to where we once were: a top-25 team."

In particular, he hopes to convince RB Khalan Laborn of Virginia Beach's Ocean Lakes HS (who's rated the top player in Virginia by the 247Sports composite) to stay in-state as well, and got to know him a little more when he was on campus during this weekend's visit.

Similarly, he hopes to get other players in his area to come with him to Blacksburg. He says he's already talking to 2017 DE Yetur Matos of Fredricksburg's Chancellor HS about the prospect, since he's "not that far from me," in addition to 2019 RB Devyn Ford and 2018 OT/DE Nana Asiedu of Stafford's North Stafford HS.

"There's just a bunch of other kids that should stay in Virginia and show everybody why Virginia is one of the top states in football," Garbutt said.

But even as he evangelizes on behalf of Virginia Tech, there's little doubt other schools will come calling for Garbutt to try and get him to reverse his decision. Both North Carolina and Pitt were hot on his trail before he committed, and others will surely take a look at him during his senior year.

Yet Garbutt says he doesn't plan to take any visits to any school but Tech from here on out, saying he plans to "be up there soon" to see some spring practices and possibly the spring game, as he seeks to stay true to his word.

"I think it's only going to be going to Blacksburg from now on," Garbutt said.

Yep 3 DT's and 3 DE's along with a top safety and OLB, I've had a few and this news made me feel even better. Now I am drinking to celebrate and have unreasonable expectations for 2017!

I approve of your dedication!

I watched some of Ewell and that guy is bulldozer at Guard. I think that might be his better position. Regardless, let's get some big dudes on both sides of the line.

Early commitment from a 4* DE from VA. That's big news.

I'm thrilled. I wish more recruits would use it.

I hope that one day we have a player drop VPI&SU during the starter introductions on SNF.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

VT is actually pushing the Virginia Tech name to be the official brand name.

Didn't they try that to the point where they put "Virginia Tech" instead of "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University" on the diplomas, making everybody upset?

As a recent grad, I was explicitly told NOT to say anything other than "Virginia Tech" in resumes, applications, interviews, etc. Though my diploma does list VPISU.

The simple fact is people without ties to the university see VPISU and assume it's some small no-name school in Virginia. People see "Virginia Tech" and know it's a major university. You really only know they're the same thing if you or somebody close to you went here.

My CV definitely says VPISU. Twice, as a matter of fact. It hasn't hurt things at all. :)

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

This has been a long standing effort. It (VA Tech) is easier on the tongue to say, but less formal. It makes good sense to go with 'VATech' for sports, and VPI&SU for formal stuf like diplomas. Just my 2 cents. ..

Bonus points for using "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University"

Its possible, but we have been the leader for a while so even if he takes a step back I think we are in great shape. Its not like the coach was shocked that he picked us out of nowhere, only that he committed so early.

Yeah exactly, we have been considered top on his list for some time now, so I think his coach must have been referencing that Garbutt had some other visits lined up and he thought he would take those at least first before he made a decision. But this kid is a Hokie. I love kids like this.

I love the way Garbutt conflates "staying in-state" with playing for VT. He may be a junior in HS, but he already knows there's only one place in Virginia to play FBS football.

Here is the deal, big time recruits follow other big time recruits. If the staff can get a couple of these top ranked in-state guys, that will be huge on closing with others.

Is coronavirus over yet?

That's 100% correct. And just as important is... Winning football games.

Edit 1 hour later: A perfect example is what UVA had for the past 5 years. Top recruits from 757 and they stunk it up on the field. Now look at the recruits they are (not) getting. Two years of landing big time VA recruits + 8-10 win seasons + decent bowls and we will control the state.

You are 100% correct, however I have a tad bit more confidence in the current staff at developing players than I had in Mike London developing players.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Not to be Debbie-downer, but this really isn't true. UVA is a perfect example of it not being true. They got a few elite prospects and then a bunch of scraps. The flood doors did not open.

And how many times do we hear that [insert name of VT committ] is going work hard on [insert names of VT targets] and it makes no difference whatsoever in the end?

I'm glad an apparently really solid kid committed to VT and is apparently excitied about doing so. But I don't know that it means much beyond that.

I disagree... I've known a number of these types of young men, and out on the trail as they go to camps together and take recruiting trips together they build relationships. They absolutely follow each other. Maybe not all of them, but enough of them for it to make a difference on a guy or two in each class.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I think it's hard to separate the effects of guys recruiting each other and top talent simply nucleating at good programs. We often see this happening for the blue-bloods in the college football world, so it may be as much the school as it is anything else. Sure, you often see them talking to each other on Twitter and the like, and sometimes one follows another (QB-WR combo, for instance) but it would be a hard thing to prove.

It never hurts to have top in-state talent committing early, though. People will take notice.

"Exit light..."

Leg for "nucleating", as if you needed it. :-P

I'm not saying it never happens, but it's a very small number. If they "absolutely" follow each other, what examples are there currently on the VT roster? It's not as though this kid is the first 4 star player who has ever committed to VT, yet I remember very few guys say they came to VT because so and so signed with VT.

Sure, a handful of guys have given VT a look because of Isaiah Ford, but have any actually committed to VT? Did anyone actually decide to come because Dwayne Lawson committed? Last year was a huge whiff with receivers...you'd think just one would have flipped/committed if it really mattered that much.

I'm not totally disagreeing with you here, so don't take this as me arguing with you, However...

Think back to the 2011 class. We targeted two highly ranked Virginia kids (Turner, OL & Hughes, LB), and Marquise Williams from NC. Those guys and a couple others were, most likely, going to go to school together based on the relationships that had developed during the recruiting process. When one domino fell that year, the rest fell the same way... UNC.

In my opinion (and it is only that) the reason it you don't see it happening as much at VT is because we don't get enough of those types of guys on a regular basis (a couple each cycle).

Is coronavirus over yet?

UNC had a lot more things to "offer" their recruits. And a non-existent class load was only one of the things.

Again, I'm not saying it never happens. But the vast, vast majority of the time kids go where they're going to go -- and where their classmates and their friends and their camp buddies go doesn't much factor into their decisions. It never has and it never will. You folks that think it will are just trying to find some magical silver lining where one simply doesn't exist.

I think the silver lining is that we landed a 4-star, top 10 in VA, highly touted prospect. Also not to get wrapped up in this debate, but from the beginning he acknowledged it was likely only one or two prospects per class, not a vast majority. I think everyone's in agreement!

That's not at all what he acknowledged. He said if VT if gets one or two top guys, it will be "huge on closing with others". There is little evidence to support that and that's what I disagreed with.

I have personally have no idea how many top 10 VA guys VT will get - nor do I really care (I just want good players, with good attitudes, that fit VT's system and are at positions of need - regardless of their domicile).

But getting this kid doesn't appreciably change the odds of getting or not getting additional top 10 VA guys.

The best want to compete with and play with the best. Getting one or two top flight 'croots might not do much. But getting 4 or 5 (or more) definitely attracts more talent, especially when those guys are known around the circuit and actively lobby others to join them. Interviews with Clemson, Bama, FSU, etc... recruits absolutely mention this as a reason for making the decision to commit to those programs, time and again.

Agree with this. Competitive people go where top talent is to compete with them. To see if you are among the best. People do it in all professions. Military guys go to elite units. Top programmers go to apple. All because that is where the best in their field are.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

"Evidence" involves more than statistical analysis. I'm speaking from experience. So no, it isn't exactly science, but that doesn't mean it isn't true.

Is coronavirus over yet?

So what is this experience?

My experience is that kids ultimately do not follow other kids. They go to schools because they like the program as a whole, the coaches, the education, the weather, the facilities, the chicks, the location...but they rarely go because their HS buddy did or a couple other good players in their recruiting class did.

I'm not trying to be snarky here. I'm genuinely curious. How close are you to the kids who make these decisions to know exactly what motivates them? Are you in academics? Have you advised these recruits in the past? Are you a recruiter or agent type? How do you have that experience to know those things?

Onward and upward

No worries... I'm not trying to get into all of my personal and/or professional networkings on a place like this. The common ground here is that we are all, in some way shape or form, Hokies.

marcb2 is correct in that "there is little to support the evidence" that I'm suggesting. I don't disagree with that at all. My only thing was that my original point could still be a reality, and in my experience, sometimes is.

In any event, it's awesome to see the staff lock in on a big time Va recruit early in the cycle. I do happen to think it will have an impact later on as they try to close on some other guys. Again, only my opinion.

Is coronavirus over yet?

that question was meant for marcb2, and not for you. But thank you for responding anyway! I respect your wish not to share your connections on the internet.

Onward and upward

Maryland's 2016 class is a good example of 1-2 kids putting a lot of pressure on local elite talent to stay in state, that relatively panned out( and had Locksley been retained would have paid out in spades)

I think the reason people don't realize that it really does have an affect is because the relationships between these kids is rarely common information. An example would be Tomon Fox. Without Belmar and D'Andre Plantin as Hokies he never would have visited and seriously considered giving VT a fresh look. You can say we didn't land him but there are plenty more examples. Mook and other top targets championing VT often legitimizes programs like us to other recruits. Also, isn't UVA a perfect example of this? Thoroughbreds? The 5-stars, the Nicholson and Eli Harold guys? Development is a seperate issue, but once London got the first ones in the door the rest hardly needed recruiting.

Getting closer looks and being in the top 2 is absolutely nothing new for VT. And in the end it still means exactly the same thing as not getting a closer look and not being the top 2.

I just seen way too many times where it hasn't amounted to anything and very few where it has.

And what good recruits followed those 5 star guys to UVA? Other than those few elite guys, UVA's recruiting was underwhelming. UVA under London is exhibit A for elite recruits having no coat tails.

@marcb2 You're #drunj

Just read this in an RTD article about JC Price, now a coach at Marshall:

"Price said. "We've won 33 games the last three years. ... I think kids are starting to realize that. When you get an impact player like C.J. Reavis or Jaquan Yulee, it does nothing but raise the awareness. Kids are all over social media. They know what's going on. They respond when we start signing great players."

Horse hockey. What's he going to say...that they're both going to Marshall because it's one of the few programs where they could be eligible to play right away?

They signed one 4* kid in this class...Yulee (and how Reavis isn't a 4* when he would have been the incumbent starter at a power 5 program LAST SEASON tells you how big a grain of salt the ratings should be taken with). So precisely zero elite recruits followed him. When Marshall starts getting 4* qualifiers straight out of HS, then we've got a story.

All I posted was a statement by a college coach who said basically the same thing Living4Fall said. Of course, he's just a college coach. What would he know? I'm sure you're much more informed! Jeez! Chill!

Who was it the other day said rumors going around we might be playing a 3-2-6 alignment? That might make it interesting.

That would be horrible idea IMO, talking about issues against the run unless we have a lot of run stuffing big DBs that fly to the ball

Iunno the steelers, browns, Packers, and Patriots made it work for the early and mid 2000s. And don't say that's because they were pros it's not like they were playing college offenses. Just like the option scheme is scheme and it can work out either way

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

10 - 15 years ago. With how pass happy the league is now, why did those teams steer away from 6 DBs?

You make your defense a liability against the run (and clock) when you drop into a pass heavy defense. Plus with the growing number of QBs with mobility, you don't want to have all potential pass rushers accounted for by blockers.
