Wow, no one knows anything about this kid and why he didn't sign. He was a two star I am pretty sure and we cant get a commitment from a two star kid with no offense???

Well since he was never reported to be a WALK ON, most of us had no way of knowing bro. No need to be a smart A. He was on most verbal lists and never reported or stated to be a walk on. Thank you to the rest who answered with out being condescending and just answering the question. Wish the kid well.

You asked a question and I answered. If you took that as condescending that's your own prerogative. It's been known he was going to be a grey shirt if even having a real offer for quite a while.

He is still deciding what he wants to do. At least according to Mike Barber.
I'm told Woodgrove High School defensive tackle Clay Dean, who committed to #Hokies last March, is still considering signing with VT.β Mike Barber (@RTD_MikeBarber) February 4, 2016

One, it's not clear he had an offer at this stage of the game
Two, kids are not required to sign a LOI on signing day. I don't know why more kids -- particularly the elite kids -- don't take a pass if they're not 100% certain. Coaches will make room for elite players at any time.

malik McDowell is another high profile one. Wanted to go to MSU and his parents refused to sign his LOI. Ended up signing, at MSU, close to a month later I believe.

Alex just tweeted he will be preferred walk on, was told of change when Fuente took over.
2016 DT Clay Dean tells me that he'll indeed be a preferred walk-on with #Hokies. Said new staff told him of the change after they took overβ Alex Koma (@AlexKomaVT) February 7, 2016

Cool, thank you guys for the update. So I am guessing Fuente was honest and up front with this kid and his schollie will go to a future commit? I could see that if true and coach was up front with him which sounds like the case.

CJF comes in and isn't afraid to play the game. Needs the scholarship, or (more likely) just doesn't want to spend one on Dean (no offense to him, but he's a borderline prospect for us, and I know I'm not the only one who saw his commitment and didn't think much of it). In Fuente's eval, he's not part of the plan. Fair enough - welcome to the world of college football coaching changes.
And Clay Dean, who could have found somewhere else to play football - very likely on that school's dime - decides instead to accept VT's PWO offer and come to Blacksburg to earn a free ride if he can. Could have said "screw it." To his credit, he didn't.
Says a lot about how CJF handles his business. And, frankly, how Clay Dean handles his. Pulling for him.

I know CJF is probably familiar with Sam Rogers and the Grim Reaper, et al, but has he spoken about his walk-on philosophy? I wonder if they get the same shots in camp as our previous candidates.
(PSA: always proofread, unless you want Sam Rigors to get the same sh*ts in camp as our precious candidates.)

Frankly I was pretty surprised Dean accepted it, he's a low ranked guy but not so low ranked that he couldn't find a G5 school willing to give him a full ride

Good solid post spot on and I too like to pull for these kids. If my memory serves me correct we have had a few 1 or 2 stars and walk ons that have done very well for themselves through hard work in the weight room and on field work ethic. Hoping Dean is in the same fold.

Stars have nothing to do with the person off the field. He could have some shit going on it may not be that he doesn't think the Hokies are worth it.
Personally IDGAF we got a 4* DE
Because walk-ons don't sign a LOI...
Yep, really good chance he's going to walk on here. Otherwise, he might be considering offers from smaller schools.

Didn't Jadeveon Clowney commit to USCe like two weeks after signing day?
Sounds familiar.

I think the kids like the idea of being on espn in front of their classmates while putting on a hat...can't say I would have been any different.

This is so encouraging on many levels.

Let's just hope NO ONE gets the sh*ts in camp.
think he had some walk-ons that played at memphis
If Clay works hard and shows everybody what he's capable of, he won't have to wait very long for a scholarship.
Absolutely....
Frankly I was pretty surprised Dean accepted it, he's a low ranked guy but not so low ranked that he couldn't find a G5 school willing to give him a full ride
I can't either as he was offered and not like he was a non star recruit. Hope as reported his deal was discussed and he was treated fair.
