Duke starting quarterback Thomas Sirk ruptured his achilles tendon on Tuesday morning during a team workout. A timetable for his return has not been set.

Man that sucks. Hopeful for a speedy recovery and him being able to play this season.
The QB's on their roster have completed one total college pass.
How many Division 1 passes have our QB's completed? That is a question i would like to know, I guess I could just look up Brendan Motley's numbers.
Don't forget all the game time Lawson had.......
Sucks. Didn't they have a big injury last offseason? Brown, the LB?
Seems like they always have a big injury every offseason. LB last year and I think a TE (Deaver?) the year before that.
I blame the Strength and Conditioning program. /s
Every time I hear or see the word Rupture, I cringe. One of the best, horribly descriptive words for a devastating injury.
Sucks and hoping for a full recovery.
Yikes... thats probably going to end up knocking him out of this entire upcoming season.
This is possible. I ruptured my left Achilles playing basketball. Took a year to recover with intense PT after surgery. Considering he will get probably better doctors and PT access then I had, it could be faster, but expect 9 months minimum. That does not bode well for start of season but he could be in later in the season (at the earliest). Bummer.
Since the kid already lost a year to an achilles, he could get a med RS extra season, if he missed all of next year. I hope that he doesn't have Kenny Lewis type recovery from an Achilles injury.
Wow so he ruptured is right Achilles in 2013 and now his left one in 2016. That's some really crappy luck. Poor kid.
Not surprising... his injury to the right one probably caused him to put too much stress on his left one over a course of time, and it finally just gave out. A torn achilles takes a very long time to heal, so he probably got used to favoring his left leg, which ended up causing this one. Happens quite a bit with these kinds of injuries from what I understand.
There are some genetics involved as well. I ruptured my Achilles tendon a year and a half ago, and I was trying to read about how to prevent it from happening again in the future. I read an article that pitched it as "Good news! It's not your fault!" But I wanted it to be my fault, because that meant that I had some control over it and could work to prevent it. That I may be genetically more susceptible to injury is not good news at all.
I hate to hear news like this. That's one of the worst injuries you can have. That will put him out for a whole year easily.
Yikes. Hope he can return for at least some of the season. Lets hope this can be a reminder to not only our players but to all players, take care of yourself. I know he probably couldn't prevent it but injuries can be preventable.
Awful news. I hope for a speedy recovery for him.
I think he still managed to run Moto over this morning.
Hey-oohhh!
turns out this type of injury is his...Achilles heel. too soon?
They have a very talented kid coming in from Benedictine in Richmond- Scott Bracey. He played QB as well as WR in HS.
He is going to be a WR there.
That is a horrible injury. I wish him a speedy recovery.
Question (& please don't attack me): I feel bad for him, however, does this help us out at all in terms of the upcoming match-up?
It seems likely that this'll help VT. (although, hopefully, we don't need help against Dook). I don't know what their backup situation is, but I know they don't have anyone behind him on the depth chart with meaningful collegiate game experience. We play them the first week of November, or about 9 months from now. That seems like the the most optimistic timetable for his return to action. It could all be a moot point if the next man up ends up being a good QB. He'll have 2/3 of a season under his belt by then and should settled in by then.
Another aspect to consider is whether or not they can lure in a transfer QB. If you're going to suffer a potentially season-ending injury to your QB in the offseason, this is probably the best time (or least bad time) for it to happen. There's time to try and recruit a transfer. I have to assume that Cutcliffe and his crew are working the phones pretty hard right now trying to find a FCS or graduate transfer eligible QB who could be there by summer.
Could also potentially hurt. Duke has played Miami, Pitt and UNC well the past couple of years. Nevertheless, I imagine that Duke will still be good. I have heard that Cutcliffe has some experience coaching QBs.
You bastard! Kidding
I asked this in another thread, but I'll put it here too, where it's probably more relevant.
If Motley falls behind Evans and Lawson on the depth chart this spring would he consider a transfer to Duke? Does the ACC even allow transfers between conference schools without a mandatory sit-out period? Assuming ACC rules permit it and it would require VT approval, would coach Fu sign off on such a transfer?
most of the time you can block some transfers and it's almost always the case that schools block the player from going to schools they'll be playing in the near future, especially one in its own division
I agree that schools usually block players from transferring to conferencemates or future opponents (that's how we got Brewer, because TTU wouldn't let him transfer anywhere in Texas or the BigXII, if I remember correctly). I think Motley could be a special case. He's been a great asset to the program, is very well liked, and has (I believe) graduated. If he wants to transfer because he got passed by 2 younger guys on the depth chart, rather than simple dissatisfaction with the program or coaches, it would be a good PR move for VT to allow the transfer and wish him well in his future endeavors. (excluding the first Saturday in November, of course.)
There was a safety a few years ago that we didn't block from transferring to GT. he was able to transfer and play right away because of the NCAA hardship rule.
I think that may have been Morgan Burnette
As I recently learned, intra-ACC transfers require the player to sit for 2 years. Motley is a r-Sr. I doubt he wants to spend 7 years in college just for a chance to play. He could possibly make use of the grad transfer rule, but does he really want to hang around college into year 6 just for, again, a chance to play ball?
He wouldn't even have the option. You have 5 years to play 4 (once you sign/enroll). You can apply for a medical hardship and be granted a 6th year of eligibility.
The grad transfer rule allows you to play without sitting out. Not sure if the transfer rules (i.e. school or conference blocking applies), since you would have graduated.
I think blocking of transfers applies to graduates as well. That's why Brewer came to VT instead of any school in Texas. IIRC, he wanted to stay in Texas but was blocked from all P5 Texas schools.
I wasn't sure if the Brewer example applied here, since he was only 3 years into the program. If I understand the process correctly, a scholarship can be either a 1-year renewable deal, or a 4-year deal. If he had agreed to a 4-year offer, I could see where the school would have the ability to decline to release him from that agreement after 3 years. I couldn't figure out if it's a different situation when a player has completed 4 years, essentially making him a free agent.
The grad transfer rule is what I was wondering about. I had heard about the 2-year rule for underclassmen transfers, but wasn't sure if it applied for graduates as well. I was speculating that the Duke option might be interesting to him because I think it presents a very good chance to play this year.
This is a good place to ask a question I've had for a while. What about Adam Smith? How did that come about? He's in conference playing this year? I heard Buzz kind of allude to it before the ga tech game, but he didn't really want to get into it. Just wondering how that played out exactly.
