Hokies fans, Tech heads back on the road after a solid win over Clemson. The Hokies are headed to that dreadful rival to the north, #7 UVA, who the Hokies beat in Blacksburg 70-68 at the beginning of January. After starting UVA on what seemed like a slide into mediocrity, losing three out of four games early in the ACC schedule. The Wahoos have righted their ship, winners of six in a row, most notably against Louisville. Other than the Cardinals though, those wins came against the bottom to middle teams in the conference. Tech really has a chance to stand tall and make an argument for post season play if they can find a way to win at John Paul Jones arena. The Wahoo's have not made many changes in terms of roster so we will see much of the same strategies play out tonight as we did in the last game. The only area I would expect to see more is in terms of the aggressiveness UVA takes the ball to the rim. Last game they tried to win the game around the perimeter and it almost worked but they realized late that getting the Hokies in foul trouble gave them a much more advantageous lineup to work against.

The Senior class is critical for this Wahoo's team, starting with Malcolm Brogdon, (#15), 6'5, 217 Lbs Guard, who is averaging 17.9 PPG, 4.4 RPG and 2.8 APG from the shooting guard role. Brogdon shoots better than 40% from outside and also better than 87% from the line. Brogdon has really picked up his came in conference play, scoring almost 3 points per game better than during the regular season.

The next Senior to keep an eye on will be Anthony Gill, (#13) 6'8, 230 Lbs Forward, who is averaging 14.2 PPG and 6.1 RPG while shooting almost 60% from the floor, all inside, and 70% from the line as well. Gill has struggled as of late so if that continues Tech should be able to focus more on the outside shooters.
The only other Wahoo in double figures this season is London Perrantes, (#32) 6'2, 189 Lbs, Junior Guard, who is effectively their point guard, handling the ball at the top most often. He comes in averaging 11.4 PPG, 3.1 RPG, and 4.3 APG. Perrantes has been consistent and improving so we need to be prepared for a lovely ball falling early and often from outside, currently shooting 50% from behind the arc, so we can ill afford to let him get in a groove outside. Perrantes has picked up the pace from outside so someone needs to be aware of him at all times.

The Senior theme continues with Mike Tobey, (#10), 6'11, 253 Lbs Center who is averaging 7 PPG and 4.1 RPG also shooting almost 60% from the floor. Tobey seems to be a bit hit or miss all season, some games going for double figures, others going for naught but some attempts and air to go with it. Lets hope we see the latter tonight.

Darius Thompson (#51) 6'4, is the third starting guard for Tony Bennett, as a Sophomore, the youngest of the top five for UVA. He is averaging 5.4 PPG, 2.2 RPG and 1.9 APG as the rotational guard, used primarily to create space for Perrantes and Brogdon near the top of the key. Thompson has also seen his play since entering the conference schedule fall off a bit.
It's well known the term "Pack Line Defense" and UVA go hand in hand. It is a high pressure, man to man defense that sags to the middle of the court. The "pack line" is an imaginary line two feet inside the three point line that all defenders not guarding the current ball handler are never supposed to be outside of. The defender that is on the ball handler is expected to be up close, hand in face to create turnovers on the outside. One other critical aspect of this defense that is different than most is that it's designed to deny the baseline. Defenders are taught to position themselves to not allow any baseline penetration, relying on help defense to close down an adjusted drive to the center of the lane.
This game the Hokies have to get dribble penetration, execution at the free throw line, and offensive rebounding. If the Hokies are the better team at these areas it could mean a winning streak against UVA has started. The way the Hokies have to approach this game is as if every possession could decide the game because one or two untimely miscues could do just that. Allen needs to be able to get into the body of Gill when he drives in or force Brogdon or Perrantes to grab him as he goes by.
It's an away game, they delivered in a tough situation on Saturday, and its against a rival. Allen needs to repeat his defensive performance against Brogdon/Perrantes on the outside and our bigs need to be smart with their fouls especially with the screen game that UVA plays. We can't afford to let them break out the three in the second half like they did in the last game. The higher the score in this one goes, the more likely Tech is to win. LeFree at the line to win it once again as we let a double digit lead crumble late only to be saved by our basketball Hero. Sound familiar, I think it happens again tonight. VT 77-UVA 72
After seeing all their photos, UVA is now known as the "Hair Club for Men that want to drink Zimas"

Comments
Looks like Chris Clarke is starting to heal up enough to move around in warm-ups. Unless that isn't him. Looks like him to me.
That looks like Chris Clarke to me. He isn't wasting any time. He still had the boot on for the Clemson game.
**Edit - This was Barber's next tweet.
Awesome. I don't look for him to play but hopefully he can get back into the lineup and produce this late in the year.
Hopefully he will be back by the ACC tourney. We might have to get a win or two there to make the NIT.
So thats more good news.
Standing by. Let's sweep them Hoos for the glory of Buzzketball.
Let's hand the Hoos another loss!
Hey Perrantes! Your hair looks stupid!
Clarke is straight suited up!
Brogdon yawning at tip off.
Oof. Ugly slugfest so far. I'm glad that shot fell by Allen.
Surprised we're not worse off going into the first media timeout. Hope Buzz gets them straightened out on offense.
We haven't come to play offensively so far tonight. Really struggling.
We are our worst enemy so far.
Looks like they have been trying to get Bibbs to drive from the wing even though UVA doesn't exactly defend the three point shot well. Hoping he gets a bucket or two to open it up more?
Clarke!!!!
Woah Chris Clarke!
Amazing how ACC Network will televise a Hokies ACC basketball game in Boise, Idaho... but not anywhere in North Carolina.
(They are showing UNC now, but still... Raycom sucks! We need a better affiliate network!)
Really good D so far. Good hustle, good rotations, and for the most part they're putting hands in all the shooters' faces. Just need to calm down a bit on O.
Man Uvas hedge defense off screens is excellent
Clarke!
Chris Clarke sighting !!
Be nice to score again.
Tech cant hit a FG to save their lives right now.
Ok got to get a basket! let's Go!
.....can't buy a bucket. Sheesh.
Well Clarke looks ok for now
What!
Exact same thing I said! He must have really pushed off for there to be an offense found on a guy who had his defender beaten by a half a step.
And the defender left his feet
How in the effin eff is that an offensive foul on Leday?
They are sleepwalking.
Edit: not meant to reply to you, I was gonna reply but then didn't and then decided to comment without refreshing. Ahh Gentleman Jack
We should be down by 20.
We have got to attack the basket more. They are shutting everything off around the perimeter. Granted these refs are charge happy right now. Anytime a ref feels the need to flourish their foul calls I believe they are feeding off the home crowd. Just my opinion though. They just look stupid out there waving their arms and thrusting their hips.
U G L Y. UVA's the reason why.
Seriously, bad basket ball.
I get that defense is UVAs thing, but God how nice would it be to see a Hokie team with an offensive identity again.
This is absolutely embarrassing.
We are on pace for 10 pts per half
Bout time we got some Tyrone up in here.
Looking like a Greenberg lead team on offense right now. Not enough off-ball movement.
How do you give up the baseline in a 2-3 zone? That's pretty pathetic.
Giving up too many easy buckets.
We need to make a run.
Get to the line and miss both. Are you joking?
Buzz has to be furious right now with the jogging back on defense. I have seen at least 4 plays someone is slow getting back and they have found an easy bucket each time.
Bibbs gets mugged and injured and LOLuva gets a free 2 on the other end.
All that weight coming down on the side of someone's foot into an ankle roll, that one hurts. Hope Bibbs is okay.
This one is over. If the lack of effort hadn't already decided it, the refs have. The refs have been a disturbing trend in ACC play
Down voted for what exactly?
They are doing everything they can to stop Seth in transition from taking it straight to the basket
Double digits baby!
Getting tired of these bullshit refs. Make the call and stop dancing all over the floor. Asshats.
This hasn't gone well. I picked a bad game to tune in and see what our hoops were up to...
All I can say is at least the pressure is off (as a fan). If we lose, we split with them and I can just tell my UVA "friends" I'll take the split in basketball and the win in football every year. Still a lot of time left though, need to get more in transition
Yup, gotta try to push it. Easier said than done.
Far from over, if we end up down by 10 we can still do it have to stop making all those mistakes.
3 offensive fouls in one half. Wow.
And each foul was questionable
Got to go at Gill.
Such a block
The ref calls a charge from 30 feet away when the ref 8 feet away didn't
These refs are more worried about being seen than making the "right" call.
How many points would we have if we just heaved up shots from half court each possession? Bet we could have made 5. Also that is the second straight call the refs have made after the fans started groaning!
I really like Jalen Hudson's sideburns
His scruffy beard game is stronk.
CHRIS
CLARKE
We are just killing ourselves!
Chris Clarke is everywhere. Great to see that.
These turnovers are the difference, up to 9 in the first half.
Clarke!
Thank you Chris C that's some hustle let's get fired up.
played that bad in the first half and only down by 12, this game aint over yet like the goons over on the sabre think it is
Clarke with a little spark?
You think they will follow up this Seth Greenberg halftime report with a Seth Curry commercial?
Nah, since when does Steph Curry follow Seth Greenberg?
Happy to see Clarke back on court I really love how he has been cheering team on from the bench during his injury recover. Thats the kind of character that defines a Team.
Clarke looked like the only player without concrete Jordans at the end of the half. Hope Buzz lit a fire under them in the locker room.
These refs are calling nothing but charges around the rim so forget about getting a call trying to attack the rim.
I'm not sure our guards got the memo. So many empty drives to the basket this game.
Depends on which team has the ball.
Oops.
LeDay can't stay on the court.
These turnovers are devistating. If we would just quit making it easy on them we might be able to cut into this lead. They aren't exactly pouring them in.
Points off Turnovers up to 20 for LOLuva. Just spotting them 20 points is a great way to lose by 20 points.
Stat of the night brought to you by Fransia wine
That. Is. Hilarious.
We aren't doing a very good job of finishing inside. Have missed a ton of layups
Yeah. Our baby race was better. We didn't slam our babies faces on the court.
Highlight of this game is still having Clarke back
Chris Clarke. Man, have I missed his quickness and explosiveness.
Let's just run that play where Clarke dunks it every time. I liked that.
Why did I have to have hoos for parents! Poor baby!
Charge?
Seeing Clarke with so much more pep in his step makes me think ACC play is starting to wear on our team. I remember Clarke being athletic, but not THAT much more athletic.
Good news is our team has the weekend off.
Chris Clarke is good at basketball.
I really hope he doesn't leave early for the NBA. He definitely has the potential.
CHRIS CLARKE: TWO HANDS FOR SAFETY
Anyone else think Gill looks like Sideshow Bob (or is it Sideshow Mel)?
Jalen just doesn't have it. He can't buy a bucket.
edit. and he just missed a wide open dunk. Wow.
Back to back missed layup and open dunk (add a T to it for good measure). Not good.
You aren't kidding!
I strongly admire Hudson's attempt at grabbing the missed dunk while hanging on the rim.
I'll take that technical.
I strongly disapprove of missing wide open dunks 6 inches away from the basket
Absolutely.
I just thought it was a funny play.
I know, it's just hard to find much humor right now. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't feel like we have given this game away through turnovers.
Man...I wish Henry could score, we could use his presence on d.
I'm convinced that Clarke is the only player that can sink a basket within 5 feet.
I see Buzz hasn't been running dunking drills in practice. We've missed so many open dunks recently.
That Wilkins kid having the game of his life.
Well if Clemson was two steps forward, this is one BIG step back.
This is one of the sloppiest games I've ever seen us play. Turnovers compounded by way too many missed layups and opportunities. Recipe for disaster. At least Clarke has been good in his return.
Also, for a top ten team, their student section is hot garbage
Such a self inflicted loss.
Considering the way they have called charges this game, that was a very favorable blocking call for Gill on Blackshear. Really makes playing defense tough when those go against you.
I mean, the refs weren't great, and like I've said numerous times ridiculous due to their flamboyant attitudes, but we just really doomed ourselves with turnovers and not finishing at the hoop. We had a chance to make this game at the very least competitive but we just couldn't slow ourselves down and play good basketball.
I am not trying to blame them. One of the cardinal rules of officiating is to call the game consistent, even if you may find yourself erring one way or the other, be consistent through the entire contest. That is my gripe. Most of those plays with the offensive player lowering their shoulder were called charges early and Gill was every bit as aggressive with his shoulder there and got the call.
Oh you're 100% right. I just wanted to rant more honestly. Refs were ridiculous and we were terrible.
If UVA cares so little about football, why do they wear ties and dresses to football games and T-shirts and smugness to every other sporting event?
In their defense, they wear smugness to football too
Team needs a break, looks worn out.
Just need to get this loss closer to 10 not 30.
Oh they called traveling.
Anybody capture gif of that Hoo baby hitting the deck? Hopefully kid will realize it's better to be a Hokie.
On the bright side, Justin Beiber and his mom made up.
