Buzzketball Stumbles Against Virginia 67-49

Hokies (13-12, 5-7 ACC) fall in Charlottesville, lose by 18.

[Mark Umansky]

Things escalated quickly in the Virginia Tech men's basketball team's 67-49 loss to in-state rival Virginia in John Paul Jones Arena.

An early turnover lead to an Anthony Gill three point play, and the rest of the game followed accordingly. The Hokies made mistake after mind-numbing mistake, the Cavalier defense tightened even further and then eventually capitalized on their abundance of chances.

Throughout the slop coach Buzz Williams stood on the sideline, arms primarily crossed, foot occasionally stomped. Without a word he already echoed the sentiment reverberating across Hokie Nation about the showing: frustration and disappointment.

"I think if you get beat the way we did from start to finish, I think you should always credit (Virginia)," the head Hokie said. "I would say some of them were even uncharacteristic for us. 35 percent of the time in the first half we turned the ball over. We were a little better in the second half, but that was not a good start at all."

Nothing went right for Tech. Junior forward Zach LeDay picked up two early offensive fouls and battled with the bench for most of the night. And even when LeDay found himself on the floor for a decent stretch, he couldn't get anything to go (1-7 from the field to finish with seven points).

His transfer counterpart Seth Allen failed to find success as well, as he ended with an ineffective six and double the amount of grimaces. Virginia's defense made things tough on the junior, whose explosiveness came in handy multiple times in his team's win last month.

And with the failure of Tech's biggest threats to gain traction, the Hoos slowly pulled away. While the group in orange may have had issues holding onto the ball, Tony Bennett's squad passed with precision. The ball rotated crisply around the arc, frequently finding the open man, who would then bury his jumper.

"Virginia Tech really james the lane, they flood it, they pack it, they pick up a ton of charges," Bennett said. "So you've got to make the next pass, and they forced us certainly to do that early."

And it's how the first half would go. A Hokie mistake, a Wahoo capitalization, and in seemingly the blink of an eye UVA was up double digits, then 15, then 20, engulfing their opponent in an insurmountable lead.

There were, however, two shining stars for the losers.

Freshman Chris Clarke made his return after missing all of conference play so far. The silky smooth athlete from Virginia Beach made his presence known immediately, not just with an early dunk but with his mere donning of the uniform.

It was hard to take your eyes off him if you were a Tech fan in the building, just waiting to see if the former top recruit in the state would check in. He ultimately did, though he told reporters afterwards he didn't know he'd get time until the moment Williams pointed his way, and glided through an up and down comeback.

While the fast-rising dunks are easy to remember, so should the haphazard ball handling and missed bunnies at the rim. It was a great return, but the youngster also reminded fans there's more to improve.

Another bright spot was a fellow frosh, point guard Justin Robinson. He lead the team with 16, scoring all but two of them in the last 20 minutes. Though there were a few plays which padded his total, the freshman showed more poise than many of his upperclassmen peers. He attacked with intensity and knocked down open triples.

Robinson's ability makes Hokies yearn for the future, as his ceiling at the position is higher than anyone in Blacksburg's since Malcolm Delaney.

Coming up the Hokies get a week off before heading down to Coral Gables to play another top-12 team in Miami. It'll be a tough test, but don't think Williams will allow his guys to get discouraged. Yes, Tech hardly had a chance and it was apparent early on. But the head coach thought this barn burner was different than others this season.

"I thought our spirit was pretty good tonight, honestly," Williams said. "I know there are three games of the 12 that we've played, at Pitt, at Duke, at Virginia, that kind of don't go in the grouping of the other nine games.

"Seven of the 12 have been decided by two possessions or less, I think they're comfortable when it's a one or two possession game because we've played more of them, but I thought our fight and our spirit was better at this blowout than it was at Duke, I thought we lost our identity at Duke within the first media timeout, and I thought at Pitt we just never had any juice whatsoever. I thought we had good juice, I thought our spirit was good tonight."

A few quick notes

This may lead to an entire article, but just one note tonight.

The last four times Tech has faced off against the Wahoos have been fascinating. On one side, a team and a coach who've soldiered through every stage of rebuilding. On the other, one who is trying to do the same. From taking over a program in pieces to an annual NCAA Tournament frontrunner, it's hard to ignore the job Bennett's done.

Not only the success, however, but how he's done it. Bennett enforced his style, never wavering, as he brought in players who fit. And each year, as more of them accumulated, UVA saw bigger and more impressive success.

In fact, if one had to pick a team to model Buzz's blueprint after, the one down the road may be the most replicable. It's not reliant on McDonald's All-Americans and 18-year-olds waiting their turn for the NBA, but just a bunch who believes in their leader and what they need to do to win. It doesn't have to be pretty (and spoiler, it's often not), but the Cavaliers have completely bought into their path to victory.

It's not there yet for the Hokies, but isn't there a leap to be made over the next calendar year? Isn't it feasible, should Williams remain in Blacksburg, that the rivalry could gear up in the Commonwealth?

Absolutely. And though the Hokies were steamrolled on Tuesday night, things could get even more exciting as these two programs move forward.

Comments

>sigh< Gonna be hearing about this shit tomorrow. Fuck it. Whatever. This team has got to have the worst record at JPJ.

This is one of those times where being surrounded by F$U, UF, and UGA fans is a small (very, very, very small) blessing.

It's all right. Maybe we'll knock 'em out of the ACC Tourney. I'd savor that for awhile.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

You mean halFa$sU. Shit I'd just be glad if they get knocked out early by someone else from the ACC as well as their first round in the dance.

We looked like Yugos out there tonight, sputtering around like no one's business. I hope the rest of season we see a lot more of Clarke and Robinson and a lot less of Wilson and a little less of Seth. This team has a wonderful future, it will be built on the back of our young freshmen including Blackshear. There is hope in Blacksburg, the most in a long, long time.

Wilson is a liability on both sides of the ball. I believe he played around 30 minutes with ZERO points and we are not good enough to have that lack of performance in the starting 5. Seth Allen is another guy you know right out of the gate whether to play him or sit him. Last night, I would have sat for most of the game.

I think D. Wilson will move on after this year. That will open up another scholarship for Buzz. I have always liked him, but not being able to score, assists down and marginal defense are not helping. I think will ask him to move on.

If one had to pick a team to replicate it would be the team down the road. 1- Good article ,but dislike emulating UVA in any fashion. 2-Can't understand how Wilson gets the playing time he does , (turnovers, assists, scoring) This team has a bright future ,Buzz will get it done, not following someone else's path , but blazing his own trail.

Did you watch the Clemson game? Because Wilson is why we won it.

Yep. Buzz is playing Wilson for a reason, and his defense is usually really tight. Blaming last night's showing on anything other than being outmanned and outtalented is a mistake. Not to worry, our days are coming, and until then, I have every confidence in Buzz and won't be second guessing his methods.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Wilson is a really important part of this team. I was hoping the clarity for how he contributes in the Clemson game would end these types of "he can't shoot" comments for at least a while.

And certainly no "he should transfer" nonsense. I mean, c'mon.

Devin Wilson stats last 8 games . Playing time - 197 min , fg - 3-21 , 3pt - 1-9 , ft 4-7. Average pts per game 1.62 Definitely needs to play great defense.

georgebd

On top of the defensive boost the entire offense flows better when he is in the game. It doesn't show up in the stat line but he is a key cog in the machine while Robinson adapts to college basketball.

Another thing Wilson brings that isn't noticeable on the stat sheet is his work ethic when it comes to practice. I have seen it in the few practices I have been to as well as have heard the coaches talk about it numerous times. Wilson still practices like he's the teams #1 player, even though he was told early on that his role was probably going to diminish. Buzz has said how grateful he is for what he contributes, even though it isn't flashy or something you can see on the scoreboard.

I'm not saying Wilson is earning every bit of the minutes he is playing...but he is definitely contributing in ways that aren't accounted for in the box score.

Game observations:

1-Welcome back Clarke, the lone bright spot of the game
2-Hudson, Allen, Wilson,LeDay and Blackshear may have gotten onthe bus in Blacksburg, but none of them got off the bus in Hooville ready to play. Very disappointing.
3-Inconsistancy and lack of size still our biggest problem
4-The philosophy of taking the ball to the rim to get to the foul line, will NOT work against a team that has great shot blockers. Try pulling up for a 12 foot jump shot because they are open all the time.
5-It's just one game, forget about it but learn from it and move on and get ready for the next gaame.
6-Not quite sure I understood the starting 5 last night, if it was to keep Hudson and LeDay from getting cheap fouls early, it didn't work.

Isn't it feasible, should Williams remain in Blacksburg

doesn't he have at least 5 years left on his contract? Why would he leave?

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

yes. i mean, i guess there is always the chance he leaves before that, but i feel like Buzz is genuinely invested in building our program. why leave while making progress?

And he stated that before he coached his first game for VT, he told people to remember that it is not going to be a quick turn around, that it would take 3-4 years to get VT to where it should be. We are in year 2, and considering where we were last year, and the young talent on this team, I think we are in a great spot for the future. I don't see Buzz leaving in the middle of a rebuilding process that he has acknowledged is going to take some time.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Right, I remember these statements. He was vocal about what a disaster he inherited.

I could see Buzz leaving in year 3-4, dependent solely on the fans. You can tell how much it means to him to pack the house. He understands winning will get asses in seats. But if he is putting out a good product in year 3 and 4 and not seeing the stadium packed for non-conference opponents, I can see him leaving.

We got beat bad last night but Clarke was a nice boost. Is it just me but is college refereeing set up to benefit teams in the top 10 at home. It's really obvious watching away games for the Hokies or any other team that is the visiting team against a top 10 team. It's almost a given it will be one sided. The ACC is really bad but I watch more of those games and notice it more. The fouls may not be off in total but just the overall timing of fouls called seems to really hurt teams starting to get in a flow or a player approach to the game through out.

Edit: I speak better pig latin

This^^. While the game outcome cannot be blamed on the refs, they sure seemed determined to keep LeDay (who burned the Hoos last time around) on the bench this time. Seems like we got a few make up calls late in the second half after the game was decided.

That was a really sloppy performance by the good guys - certainly aided by the Hoo defense - however, our ineptitude at the rim was hard to watch.

Having Robinson score like that, to go with his passing skills, has me really excited about the future at PG.

It does sure seem to look that way at times. Here is another for you, when you have a hall of fame coach like Coach K, the calls really seem to go one way unless said hall of famer is coaching against another hall of famer like Izzo, then the referees swallow the whistles completely. Just an observation. I thought LeDays 3rd foul (an offensive charge) he got last night was completely bogus, that could be called on every single play.

That was the worst charging call I've seen in a long long time

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Any time you see a ref making big dramatic body motions to go with the call you know they are in it to play for the crowd reactions, and the good teams in the ACC have rabid home crowds to show off for. I'm sure they feed off the "BS" chants and "boos" too, but you have to keep the crowd in it to get those. I agree it was not a big factor last night, and that I see it in most games. As soon as you see one ref run out to a part of the floor to be seen while thrusting his hips or waving his arms you know all the big calls are gong to the home team.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

YES.

UVa loses: Gill, Brogdon, Tobey, and Nolte. I believe Bennett goes home to Wisconsin after this year, and with his support cast gone, Perrantes leaves for the NBA (he's good enough). UVA has no point guard or post experience returning. They will be relying on freshman (yes, they're highly rated, but freshman).

We will smoke them next year.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

Bennett isn't going anywhere, but you are right about the rest. If they lose Perrantes, they will be in trouble at least for a year. Good looking recruiting class they have coming in, but even with Perrantes, you wonder where the big shot will come from.

I would not be surprised to be looking down at them in the standings next season.

That would be interesting. I had kind of forgotten Bo Ryan stepped down in the early season. Not sure the specifics on whether his former assistant, Greg Gard will still be the head coach next year.

IIRC, Bo Ryan told the administration he wanted his assistant to be the head coach in waiting, or whatever. The administration said no, so he re-upped his commitment for the 2015-2016 season and bolted amidst the weak OOC games to start the season.

And if there is anywhere that Tony Bennett might go, its home. Otherwise, he has a pretty nice setup in C-Ville.

If this team could make half the open looks they get, they would be so good.... but man, when the shooting isn't there, the offense gets ugly.

I mean.... we missed a dunk last night. Missed. A. Dunk.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I don't watch all of our basketball games, but based on Joe's twitter it seems like we miss at least one dunk per game.

It's probably more than one.

Did anyone see the girl with the sign that said "Virginia Tech has as many championships as this sign"

I'm just like........

They won a national championship in three different sports last year. It's their thing, they pick on us because of our 0 national championships. We pick on them because they haven't beat us in football since before Donald Trump started the Apprentice or before Zuckerberg stole Facebook.

To argue the 0 Natty's point is as hopeless as them arguing anything about football. They've got us on that one, not much we can do about it.

I like to point this one out:

UVA's outright ACC championships since 1953: 0
VT's outright ACC championships since 2004: 4

"Exit light..."

Sure, we've got football. And we took it out from under them by taking over their conference for 8 years whilst kicking them to the curb.

But that's not their point.

Eh, they can brag about that all they want. I'm not saying widespread athletic department success isn't good or important, but I wonder how many of the UVa fans that brag about all these national titles in non-revenue sports ACTUALLY show up and follow lacrosse, tennis, rowing, soccer, etc. Further, I also wonder how many of these hardcore UVa basketball and baseball fans that have come out of the woodwork now were actually so hardcore more than three years ago before they gained any national relevancy.

Yeah, they can talk all they want about the national titles. But you know good and well it bothers them that a university having so much success overall in sports is completely clueless and hapless in college athletics' biggest and highest revenue earning sport.

I understand what they meant. Football reigns supreme. It doesn't bother me very much.

Can anyone give me a scouting report on Ahmed Hill? Last year I couldn't catch a whole lot of games, but from what I've heard he will be a big asset when he is back on the court.

HUGE loss...

  • Shot 39% from 3 last year after a slow start so he was REALLY good in league play. Buzz mentioned that he didn't think he'd be that good from 3.
  • Brought great energy- was a little out of control at times ala Clarke and Allen
  • Great defender
  • Second best rebounder last year 3.7/ gm
