In all honestly, would you really try to mess with this guy either way! He's the kind of guy I cross the street for when I see him coming the opposite direction at night. (Because he takes up most of the sidewalk space)

I love that he and his staff do the workouts with the players. I think that helps to build a special bond with them and that is important for many reasons. The other thing that stuck out to me is that the strength coaches get to spend much more time with the players than the position coaches and Fuente and Hilgart are aware of that and have a plan to continue the vision and mentality of the football team through the strength and conditioning program. I have no idea how that was handled under Beamer but it makes me really excited that Fuente's philosophy and vision is being conveyed and developed all the way down the line in every way possible. That is awesome.

I am family friends with one of the football players and he said all of the coaches are really strong and work out just as hard as the players. He told us that he walked in one day and Augie Conte was training with Coach Shuman, which I found impressive. If memory serves me right, Ryan Shuman graduated a couple of years ago, right?

Coach Joe Kenn, his mentor, is one of the leaders in the field and a pioneer when it comes to S&C program design. The team will most likely have their program designed around the "tier" system, which is a design based off of planes of movement and alternating days of emphasis.

He makes a really good point about how the players usually spend more time with the S&C coaches than the position coaches. It excites me to see such a high level of enthusiasm for CJF's vision!

Yep, had never realized the players spent the most time with S&C coaches. So the S&C guys may have more chances to work on player attitudes and work ethics. They can also provide feedback to the position coaches on more than just numbers. The S&C coaches can talk about a guy's willingness to work hard, his maturity and his mindset. Those are some important intangibles that can really make a difference in performance. I would think most players played well above their "star rating" and walk-ons who later earned a schollie would have A+ in all those intangible areas.

Injections and anti-inflammatories are very helpful short of an arthroscopic release.
The biggest help is to avoid overhead movements/exercises such as military presses and wide shoulder exercises such as flyes or wide grip presses.
Most Americans have very poor posterior shoulder development and are internally rotated at the shoulder which, combined with overhead presses/flyes lend to impingement s.
So replace the overhead raises/ presses/flyes with rows and bent-over lateral raises and stretches to help the impingement.

I think the most important thing he said was that his S&C staff get the opportunity to establish the "culture" that Fuente wants. Culture is so important and more important than any scheme, workout, or drill. It's refreshing to hear the new staff constantly talking about this topic! BRAVO!

Last time I saw it in person was years ago but pictures of the football weight room don't give me the impression of gorgeous a lot of cinder block and drop ceilings.

But there's no waterfall into the pool! Somehow I feel like people who want a pretty gym to workout in fail to understand the reason they are in the gym. Equipment is state of the art and there's a lot of it. That's what matters.

That's the exact same floor, the exact same racks and equipment, only in a room that is taller throughout. If you look at the first picture you posted, you notice that all the racks are under an area where the ceiling is significantly lower. Look behind the racks and you'll notice the same style of exposed rafters that you see in this picture.

I like seeing the Hokies and Hokie bird on the walls, I think the lighting is better, in other pictures there are several levels to the room. I don't expect or want a Bama or Oregon style room but one with more brightness and maybe do more with the windows to allow more natural light in plus better VT branding around the room can't hurt.

I'd Marshawn is getting too big to be a reliable RB, could we switch him to LB as a run stopping specialist?
If he is north of 240 by the time spring practice starts, he would be bigger than any of our projected two-deep, and with the athleticism he's shown, he could be very disruptive and would reduce the logjam at RB (same goes for Reid)

These comments always pop up, and confuse me every time. They are two totally different positions, with different skills and knowledge that goes with them. Lets look at it differently... would you ask a orthopedic surgeon to perform brain surgery? Or a airline pilot to fly a helicopter? I'd generally hope the answer is no.
Yes, the physical and mental talent requirements are roughly the same, but they are extremely specific skills and knowledge bases, not to mention all the reps required to be an expert.

I think a lot of it came from Trey Edmunds when he got here. He was recruited as a RB/LB and had the skill sets to play both. He stuck with RB here but anytime there was a question of depth at LB or his spot on the depth chart at RB, it quickly turned to could he play LB for us.
If Marshawn is in the 240, 250 range. I say beef him up even more and we have a true FB for those short yardage situations. If that is his only chance to see the field, it would be worth it.

That is a nice weight room. Who cares what the ceiling is like. Great equipment and plenty of it. It looks out over the practice field and at the stadium. Spend the money elsewhere instead of trying to renovate that.

Or and I know this is weird idea for HokieNation, but increase membership in Hokie Club and total donations and spend the money all over the athletic dept.

Spending money on things that aren't needed even if you have it is still a waste. I agree to increase the HokieClub membership but using that extra money to renovate something that needs no renovation is a slap in the face of all the other sports

I disagree, just like the current renovation of the Merryman center is important to the image of VT and its main avenue into people's homes. I think doing things like VT branded equipment tractor trailer is important, VT branded buses for sports teams is important and I think better branding in things like the weight room is important. All those priorities come after fully funding scholarships but hopfuelly in next 2 years the Hokie Club will be there.

Fireman, I'm telling you as a gym nut, this place is really, really nice. They have an LED board in there with all the bests of the week, month, year, and all time, the natural light is exaggerated in photos, and most of all the equipment is beyond brand spankin new.
It is a glorious gym that is about building gritty players not premadonnas.

That man looks damn good with a VT on his shirt. I'm so pumped.
I am a fan
I like it. I hear the chains in the background. Love it.
I love the lead by example mentality. Also, his beard game is strong! I want a beard like that on all the players.
am I the only one that thinks he looks more intimidating with the convict/biker/bouncer goatee instead of the full beard?

Yeah Shuman has been there since he graduated I think. He is a big dude.
Doing the shake and bake on that last questions! Was actually very curious to hear his numbers in the weight room.

I'm so pumped up I did 10 pushups last night.
.... Hey, baby steps, folks.
Real question, where they real push ups or on your knees?
Actually, they were Earth downs. He was just being modest.
Maybe a little.

He makes a really good point about how the players usually spend more time with the S&C coaches than the position coaches. It excites me to see such a high level of enthusiasm for CJF's vision!

Hey Hilgart, how do I fix my shoulder impingement?
Tough to do burpees with a busted shoulder...
I did not think it was possible for a horse to one even with good shoulders.
Yeah, that's usually when they load the gun and call the glue factory.
My sentiments exactly

This is almost exactly what my physical therapist has told me. Off to do my Hughston series!

I like him even more now.
I really hope an upgrade and renovation to the weight room is in the future.
Have you seen the weight room in person? The place is gorgeous and needs no renovation. I toured it last year.
Last time I saw it in person was years ago but pictures of the football weight room don't give me the impression of gorgeous a lot of cinder block and drop ceilings.
that looks pretty nice to me...

Reminds me of that quote "...two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds".
But yeah, I totally agree that sometimes, in wanting a pretty gym, it is easy to lose track that it is, in fact, a gym.
Virginia Tech's facilities generally rank pretty highly, 247 had them at 19th in the country
It may not be deluxe by Div 1 weight room standards, but I'd pay a lot of money to get a workout in there.
Just comparing it to other team weight room on same campus.

Looks bright with a lot of natural light to me. With regards to the walls, you've seen 2 plus a wall of windows. The 4th wall is mirrors.
Watch the video here and see if you still believe that our weight room is in need of some update.
http://www.hokiesports.com/strength/football/facility.html
Good share, I had never seen that video. I didnt know we had that backroom for speed drills.
side note: If thats Marshawn in that video, compared to the one I saw on snapchat the other day, hes gained like 50 pounds...

Should we spend some money on lights and a DJ for the gym like Miami?
Take away all that stupid stuff, and their gym looks like it's in somebody's basement.
Our New Jersey commits would be up 300%.
I'll take the training room where Clubber Lang was working out please......
Time to get mean and nasty.....
For comparison purposes, this is the weight room he had at New Mexico:
Just as a note the first little bit of the room prior to renovations.
Was going to post this same thing. I really, really like this man.
He needs a mohawk though and he will become a Street Fighter.
Maybe he WAS a street fighter and shaved his mohawk in order to hide his identity and protect his family....
I always imagined him and Dee Jay opening up a gym in New York City
Only a couple of Metallica albums off with the song selection...
