Danielle Bartelstein isn't quite willing to pull a full Charles Barkley and declare that she isn't a role model, but she isn't overly concerned with her role as a trailblazer in college football either.
Sure, Tech's new senior director of football operations is the only woman to occupy such a role at a Power 5 program, but in an interview with The Key Play, Bartelstein was hesitant to attach much meaning to her unique status.
"Although people want to make it a gender issue, I think you ultimately want to get the best person for the position, whether that's a female or a male," Bartelstein said. "If that results in me being a role model for other females in the industry, that's great, but it's not something that I think about on a daily basis."
Instead, Bartelstein says her first few months on the job since she was hired in December have been free of any gender-related drama, with Hokies players and coach alike merely treating things as "business as usual" since she's joined the team. It's a mentality that she credits Justin Fuente for instilling throughout the program, easing her transition into her new role as Fuente's right-hand woman, handling all the logistics that make the team tick.
"It's never been something that I think about, and I think a lot of that goes back to the coaches that I've been around that have allowed me to be a part of their program," Bartelstein said. "It's never been a question for me, I've always just hoped to come in like anyone else and do a great job and leave a positive impact on the program, and gender has really not played a role."
Yet for all of Fuente's gender-neutral thinking, there's no doubt that the decision to bring in Bartelstein could've ruffled feathers at other programs. Potentially complicating matters might have been John Ballein, Frank Beamer's longtime confidant and Bartelstein's predecessor in the role, remains on staff at Tech as a senior associate athletic director.
But Bartelstein says the setup has "absolutely not" produced any awkwardness or bruised egos as she's tried to fill Ballein's rather large shoes at the position.
"Just to clarify, no one could ever fill his shoes," Bartelstein cautions. "He has done such a tremendous job here at Virginia Tech, and I'm just very appreciative to have him as a resource as someone that's been in this position, but he's a fantastic person, and I'm excited to be able to continue to work with him in the future."
Bartelstein adds that Ballein's insights have been so numerous that she struggles to "pinpoint one specific piece of advice he's given me," but asserts that his help has been invaluable in adjusting to both the job and life in Blacksburg so far.
"It's just overall being able to utilize him as a resource and being able to touch base with him if I have any questions, it's just a huge help," Bartelstein said. "And he's such a great person that he's fun to be able to interact with on a regular basis as well."
She has similarly high praise for the rest of the holdovers on the staff from Beamer's days running the program, and adds that she's thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the coaches Fuente has imported from Memphis as well. Though Bartelstein's worked with Fuente before, back in their days at TCU, she says she never got a chance to meet his Memphis compatriots until they all convened in Blacksburg.
But even with that unfamiliarity with all on the staff but Fuente, she says she didn't hesitate when he offered her the chance to reunite a couple months back.
"Obviously I knew about Virginia Tech, just because of the tradition and Coach Beamer and the success he's had here at Virginia Tech, but the reason why I'm here is Coach Fuente and because of the respect I have for him, not only as a person, but as a coach," Bartelstein said.
Though she was out of football, working at an Austin, Texas law firm when Fuente invited her to join the staff, she says her time working with Fuente in a similar capacity with Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs made her quite confident that she was ready to jump back into the sports world.
"Just based on the type of coach he is and how he operates and runs a program, I admire him, and obviously appreciate the way he attacks every day and his work ethic as well," Bartelstein said. "His overall leadership is something I wanted to be a part of and I know that what he's going to bring here to Virginia Tech and to Blacksburg is going to be something special and I wanted to be a part of that."
But Bartelstein adds that her love of the sport and the challenge of running things behind the scenes also sorely tempted her. Indeed, her time working with Jim Harbaugh at Stanford and Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech in similar support roles gave her a taste of how thrilling the task could be at the highest levels of the sport.
"Just the day-to-day operations and every day is different, which is something I do love about this job," Bartelstein said. "You never know about this job, you never what tomorrow is gonna bring. Hopefully you just do enough preparation to anticipate what tomorrow is gonna bring, but there's always new things that pop up."
These days, Bartelstein says she spends her time hoping to fill the gaps and help the staff in whatever capacity she can. By the time the season rolls around, she anticipates that she'll be focused on making sure that everything about game day goes off without a hitch.
"On regular game day Saturday, hopefully most of the setup is already in place from the transportation to the hotel to the gameday set up, hopefully it all goes smoothly and we walk away with a win," Bartelstein said. "Anything I can do to help, and hopefully there won't be too many fires to put out and it's a smooth operation."
Indeed, beyond any specific goals or tasks that she can pinpoint, Bartelstein says she aims each day to leave the program better than she found it.
"The biggest thing for me moving forward is trying to make a positive impact on this program and be an asset and a positive, contributing member, that's my ultimate goal," Bartelstein said. "How that looks is all dependent on what we need and what our needs are as a program and as coaching staff, and hopefully I can help us not only with our success on the field, but also off the field and just making every day count."
Though the season is still many months away, Bartelstein says she's already eagerly "looking forward to seeing the product that they put out on the field." In particular, she's hoping to see one aspect of the Blacksburg experience that's eluded her so far.
"I've never experienced game day here at Lane Stadium, but from the videos I've seen, the stories I've heard, it's an electric atmosphere," Bartelstein said.

Comments
EDIT: Apparently my comment was "inappropriate". My bad.
Glad to have her aboard, her work ethic speaks for itself, she doesn't need the young pc generation to defend her, if she has this job it's not because she is weak or a pushover!
HF89...not so bad
via GIPHY
I got out of bed and waited for my laptop to charge so I could roll my eyes at you. For fuck's sake.
Hey look, an good interview with an exciting new hire who appears to be extremely well suited for the job, with an extensive resume. This person seems to have a great attitude, and the potential to bring a fresh new approach to the program we all love. How awesome!
I wonder what I should comment about in response to this that would be respectful and appropriate? I know, her appearance! And to make sure, I'll put something in there saying how respectful I intend to be about noting that her looks are the only thing worth talking about! What a great idea!
Oh and by the way, /s
I mean I don't want to make this into something but it is possible for someone to be attractive and very well qualified for her job, the two aren't mutually exclusive.
Absolutely 100% true. But your original comment only acknowledged the first part. And only the 2nd part is what matters. She was hired for a job she is qualified to do. Looks have nothing to do with it at all.
So I'm not allowed to comment on a women's attractiveness as a non-sequitur? I can only say it with the caveat that she's well-qualified for her profession and her attractiveness is secondary to her qualifications?
I'm just messing around, I know what you're trying to say but I meant my original statement as a cursory comment, not a reflection of what's important.
I meant it as the article had zero to do with her appearance, yet that is the only thing you commented on. It was inappropriate for the context it was used in. I have nothing against saying a woman is attractive. Frankly, there are times when it's strongly encouraged (hopefully all you posters with significant others did this yesterday, otherwise so help you).
If that makes me PC that I felt your comment was inappropriate based on the context, so be it.
RocketHokie13, if you disagree with someone that is one thing, but your sarcasm and rhetoric aren't needed. If you are pc than that's fine, your choice, but your comment seems like a low way to get a point across which is hypocritical if you are trying to correct someone else.
Not inappropriate. You said she was a attractive. She is attractive. So what. People are acting as if you implied that that's the reason she got the job. A lot of PC principles on here.
I agree USAFHokie, and if people want to be pc and disagree than so be it, but that doesn't give them the right to take legs away or use sarcasm toward fellow Hokies. A lot of people need to read the community guidelines.
http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2013/july/24/community-guidelines
Which is what several people did to seven layers for making an innocent comment. Double standard?
Welcome home . She has excellent qualifications and a great background, and I am confident she will do an excellent job. However , she does look great "rocking" Chicago Maroon.
How dare you say she looks great /s
So you want him to lie and say she isn't good looking? J/K!!
Actually, the article makes it very clear that this person is extremely well qualified for the position AND that she handles interacting with people and potentially difficult situations very effectively. Hokie Nation is indeed fortunate to have her on-board! What more is there to say, except, btw did I mention how easy on the eyes she is?
To me, the term "pc" is argumentative and not necessary in many of the instances it is used. How about socially correct to reflect the actual point? Maybe pc as in politely correct? Yeah, too many folks are outraged these days about too many things, especially when innocent or innocuous things are stated or implied, but "pc" has itself become a disparaging term and I, for one, am sick of hearing it. Most women will probably tell you that they resent the "looks first" take, especially when the article is about a woman who obviously is breaking barriers, but downvoting someone for being a typical male animal who didn't get vulgar or intensely personal seems like an overreaction to me, and I'm firmly in the "women's empowerment" camp.
Nailed it. I don't understand why being "politically correct" is a bad thing nor do I understand why the idea of being nice to people has a negative connotation. Like you said, politely correct sounds better, but it doesn't change the fact that so many people are against being "politely correct."
While not relevant here, I think "politically correct" insinuates that one is being polite at the expense of being truthful.
Honey, do you like my new haircut?
I find it amusing that you can get down voted for saying the person in question is attractive, but cancel out those down votes with Emma Watson GIFs...Regardless, great article Alex and I'm sure Danielle Bartelstein is more than qualified for the job and will make Hokie football operations that much better.
I still have no clue what she does, but it seems to be important work .
VT Athletics interview
Here's the interview with Danielle Bartelestein
I wish they'd give Laaser a nice VT polo to wear or something in these videos. That shirt is a huge step up from that mustard button up he wore in one video but this is VT. Let's get some school colors in there.
@PeteMoris we know you read TKP. Listen to this man.
I'm really impressed over the transition that Sands and Whit have managed at VT.
I'm excited about these hires; I think that the staffing changes look great on paper.
But like Ms. Bartelstein references, the proof will be in the pudding and we'll see how it works out coming soon this spring and then this fall.
+++++
It is just showing how Coach Fuente is already a steadying force at VT. Definitely a big plus.
This is not a gender specific role; we definitely wish her well and look forward to seeing her prove herself. Tech need to treat this as a normal hire, not a woman hired into a "man's" job, which it isn't.
I am really excited about the overall direction VT is heading. That is not to say that it was heading the wrong way, but sometimes you need to reboot and take a look at where you want to be in the future. I think with all the recent hires, the university is heading for an exciting future. Just take a look at the B-ball team and you see it may take time but it's in a better place than it was 2 years ago. Great article by the way.
Welcome! Now can somebody fill me in on some specifics as to what a Director of Football Operations does?
" Anything that needs to be done".
If you watched her interview I'm not wholly convinced SHE knows what her job entails. She said something like whatever I can do to help and whatever is asked of me. I feel like it is like an administrative secretary a la Iron Man's Pepper Potts.
Her job is anything that needs to be done. Making sure everything is smoothly running for games and practices and recruiting visits.
A friend of mine is the Dir. of football ops at Furman and this is the case. They have a lot of responsibility and the workload can be tremendous at times.
So logistics. Operations and logistics.
Perhaps Chief of Staff...authority/responsibility for making sure that everything that needs to be done gets done.
Then she might get confused with President Sands' Chief of Staff.
Damn, I got downvoted for this? I didn't say she doesn't do anything in her new position. Just that her responses have been pretty vague as to what she will actually be doing, hence the several other posters asking what her job duties entail because it has in no way been made clear. Also, in case you don't know who Pepper Potts is she pretty much runs everything for Iron Man/Tony Stark and he couldn't function without her so that was actually a pretty favorable comparison.
edit: I just read the rest of this thread and realized that some people maybe don't like my comment because it could have been sexist in some way. I didn't say admin sec because she is a woman, just that helping your boss in any way possible is like literally a description of that job. Could have been a man and I would have made the same connection. I'm super excited Fuente has people around him to take care of shit (recruiting, daily operations, etc) to free him up to concentrate on coaching (something the former regime seemed to badly need as well).
The way John Bullen described it to me a few years ago, It seems like Director of Football Operations is basically a project manager for the football
teamprogram (my words, not his). Logistical challenges, scheduling, staffing, assigning responsibilities, pointing players in the right direction when they need life or legal council, acting as a laison between the coaching staff and the rest of the athletic department, etc.Basically, John Bullen was to Frank Beamer as (sober) Doug Stamper was to Frank Underwood. I assume Danielle's duties will be the same.
I love hearing how our head coaches are here because of Whit and the type of guy he is and then hearing the assistant coaches and support staff saying they are here because of their respect for the coaches they work for. Buzz's guys are here because they love Buzz and what he is about in building the basketball culture. Most all of the interviews with the football coaches included some form of "I'm here because of Coach Fuente". To me, this speaks to the leadership qualities of Coach Fuente and Coach Buzz and when you have folks that are bought into their leader, great things are going to happen!
oh yeah GIRL POWER....
That polo is probably the slickest looking VT polo in existence. Love how the colors pop and the details work so well.
So I'd like to talk about what she will do in this jobs and her qualifications. Seems like she had a good background with some great programs, even helping with recruiting at Stanford.
Sure! Here's a link to Roanoke times article when she was hired - http://www.roanoke.com/sports/colleges/va_tech/vt-hire-danielle-bartelstein-joins-unique-group-in-football-administration/article_30074c0d-d392-5254-9870-a537d54b6c76.html
Directed football camps as undergraduate at Illinois
Worked on Harbaugh's staff at Stanford on football camps and in marketing
Worked at TCU as assistant director of football operations on Patterson's staff
Went to Texas Tech overseeing all football recruiting
This is a good overview. She's worked at big schools that are all doing pretty damn well. Throw in that she knows Fuente from their TCU days and it's a great fit.
Yeah, the idea that she wasn't even working for him at Memphis, but when she got the call she dropped what she was doing and joined his staff, says a lot about Coach Fuente.
[Original Comment Deleted]
Did you forget a "/s"
Between this and SevenLayersofPlayers comment, I'm embarrassed TKP is my website.
It's a shame that people went there after Alex wrote such a nice article about an obviously successful and qualified person.
So far we have:
1) Comments on her looks
2) References to her being an admin assistant
3) Accusations of her being Fuente's mistress
Should we discuss her cooking skills next?
There was also a lot of praise for her being a qualified hire that fit the culture. You can't stop people from posting dumb stuff. You have a little button that sends a message that you enjoy and approve of someone's content and idea and one that says cut that shit out we won't stand for that. Use them and don't paint the community with one brush.
I am ashamed of the sexist comments in this thread, I didn't paint the community with a brush.
I hate those comments too. Downvote them to UVA's football ranking. But you mentioned nothing positive about people generating discussion on her qualifications or excitement over her hire and fit at VT (both of which are actively occurring above).
I'm going to address something that may not be popular. A lot of people will not like that we have hired a woman to such a high position at a P5 school. Those people are bigots. Forget them. Who we hired was a qualified candidate who has great references, fits with the culture of Virginia Tech, and already knows some of the staff.
Don't tolerate any of this shit from Hokies and respectfully tell those outside of the program to shut the hell up.
We're in agreement here.
Not sure how my comment was any different than Joes or VTGuitarMan, but ok.
I'm for free speech and all but could we possibly just delete the comment? It really is kind of embarrassing...
at least you've always got this to fall back on:
You should only be embarrassed if you continue to allow the guy with mistress comment to stay. Use your authority, friend.
Why? Because you've built something big enough, with broad enough appeal, that you have a few posts here and there that don't measure up to the overall expectations of the community? I know you don't really mean you're embarrassed about what you've built, but it hasn't even been two hours, and both comments have been removed. I think the community is going to be OK.
Hey Joe, I apologize for my statement. I wasn't really thinking about when I made it. I didn't think it was that big of a deal but apparently I was mistaken. I'll be more PC about this stuff in the future.
Appreciate it, and don't sweat it, boss.
This comment was stupid but can you explain what was so wrong about sevenlayers comment? Nothing inappropriate there to me.
It's the type of shit women don't want to put up with anymore. That's all I need to know.
Being told they are attractive? How dare us that we say such things to the opposite sex. Btw she doesn't have to deal with it. It was said casually on a message board, not to her personally.
You are really smarting for an argument about this, eh? No thanks.
No actually this was a good thread about her merits until it got highjacked by sensitive people because someone said that an attractive woman is attractive. That's what annoys me.
No, the very first post was nothing about her merits; only about her looks. Let's look at the other root posts.
2 - Then there is a link to the interview.
3 - Then a post about how Sands, Whit and all the hirings are impressive.
4 - Then a post excited about the direction VT is heading.
5 - Then a post asking what her job entails.
6 - Then a post about how great Buzz and Fuente.
7 - Then an excited gif.
8 - Then a post about how great the polo shirt looks.
9 - Then a post asking about more info of the job and her qualifications.
10 - Then a post on how she's Fuente's mistress.
That's when things blew up.
So 1 in 10 threads about her merits is what you mean by "a good thread about her merits"? Or did you mean the completely inappropriate root post of this particular thread is about her merits?
Maybe the first post wouldn't have been seen as so bad if the 10th hadn't been posted, I don't know.
I have a daughter. She's a sophomore at Tech in the Integrated Science Program - 1 of 13 students (down from 50 that were accepted last year). She's a double major in BioChemistry and Nanoscience; oh she'll also get a Chemistry minor. She is in the Honors program. She has already received undergraduate research credits (as a freshman). If I read her report correctly, she's ranked #4 of the sophomores in the College of Sciences. She's had 2 A-s her entire college career; one was a freshman year elective which annoys her still.
Oh and she was also the prom queen her senior year in high school.
Do you know what people say about her? "She is sooo pretty." Not "She is sooo smart." Or even "She's so smart and so pretty." That last is completely fine in my book - it acknowledges her hard work, and tips the hat to her (momma's it must be) genes. But hey I find I do the same thing about other people.
If the first post was further down (and #10 didn't exist) then we probably wouldn't be having this discussion. Its about timing.
I don't know if you have a wife or sister or some other woman close to you in the business world, but this kind of stuff is a real problem, especially in male dominated fields (ie. football). There's nothing wrong with calling a woman attractive when it's appropriate, but often in the business world it's done as a means to belittle women. My wife is a civil engineer (a male dominated field) and works with a lot of contractors (even more so). When they say things like this it's not to compliment, it's a form of disrespect because they would rather speak to the man and is done in a highly dismissive manner.
While I'm sure the first comment was totally innocent, it follows a pattern that is anything but. That's why people call it out, because it sets a standard that that kind of talk is acceptable.
Don't use internet anonymity to say shit you wouldn't say in real life. It's very possible this will get linked to her and this will be the comment section. There is not a lot written about her yet and if you google her name, this is one of the first pages to pop up.
I'm a guy. I appreciate attractive females. I think you can put the effort in to appreciate who she is as an asset to the football team, recruitment, and operations and then say that she looks great as well. If people take offense to that approach, I will agree they are too easily offended. We do the same with coaches and players here.
It was already promoted by the VT Football Twitter account. The article will have visibility. An excellent read from Alex is starting to get bogged down in a stupid debate over whether or not Internet commenters use their forum to have a smart discussion (like we usually do here on TKP) or whether or not she's attractive, or other dumb stuff like what was posted below.
Yeah, I'm sorry. I have a blast on here and only joined a few months ago so I got a little hot when people started commenting like boneheads. I'll stop feeding the trolls. Overall, great article by Alex and I'm looking forward to the next one!
Justin Fuente is a very attractive man. Bud Foster looks great with the close shaven goatee, and that Beamer has always been a cutie, in that "Aw, shucks..." kind of way.
There, that ought balance things out nicely. Carry on.
I agree with literally every word
I got this one.

I can't figure out if this is W(h)il Wheaton or not.
Nope not Wil Wheaton - its from Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Ah, that guy. I think they look similar. Thanks for clearing that up. I can proceed with my day now.
#DreamJobGoals
With your twitter game I'm surprised your somehow not involved with recruiting already.
Welcome home, Danielle
Yes it is, so is TKP.
One trend I've noticed with all of the new hires is that they all seem to be genuinely buying into Fuente's vision. That is exciting to me. When every single person is on the same page and has the same vision I think that bodes well for this program moving forward. I love these interviews. Great job Alex!
I gather that comments on personal appearance are unappreciated at best, but I just have to ask, anyway. Is Ms. Bartlestein in any way related to Lee Corso? (not suggesting in any way, shape or form, that personal appearance or familial relationships have anything to do with the hire or her ablility to do the job) The resemblance is uncanny.
Wow. I never even saw that, now its all I can see.....
I know what the word "uncanny" means, but now I need to know what "canny" means.
From google.
Yep, which doesn't seem like the opposite of uncanny. Weird language, this English.
Well, ever notice how fat chance and slim chance mean the same thing? Gotta love the English language!
that's interesting. I always sorta took "fat chance" to be sarcastic. So, with the sarcasm, it means the same thing as "slim chance" but without the sarcasm it would actually be the opposite.
OK, we can split those hairs if you want, but when was the last time, or the first time for that matter, that you encountered the term "fat chance" used in any way other than to invoke little or no chance at all? Can you tell it's an ugly day outside and I'm still bored? You are, of course, correct that the term is used sarcastically, but is it ever, ever not? Leg for your position, though. While I was aware of the distinction in a sub-conscious way, I had never really thought it through enough to actually come to your obvious conclusion. But not that that changes things.
haha. I don't have a staunch opinion on it. I don't think I've ever heard "fat chance" in a serious tone. It has always been sarcastic. I'm just bored too...not that I don't have work I could be doing..
And no matter how often or articulately the smart-ass teenage me tried to convince my parents that fat chance should not mean the same thing as slim chance, it never worked. My mom still, 20+ years later gives me grief over that.
It's seriously fucking stupid that you feel the need to put all these conditions in your post so that you don't get down voted to hell. I swear a lot of threads on this site are the core commenters jumping on other, less established posters. There are already moderators who spend a lot of time on here, the 15 comments piling on people is completely excessive. It's led to people apologizing in their posts before they even had a chance to bother somebody. It's ridiculous. It's a message board, you are allowed to have an opinion and people are allowed to disagree. This place would be boring as hell if everyone shared the same mind.
First, it was people losing their mind over sources, now it's people getting worked up over an attractive lady making way in a mans world (not unlike all you VT fellas working with female engineers). Everyone at some point acknowledged in their mind that she was attractive, whether you outwardly admit it or not. That's human nature. It's obvious that she cares about her outward appearance, damn anyone to hell that notices. I did not see where anyone demeaned her or implied that she wasn't extremely qualified for this position.
Fuck it, soap box time from a no-named unknown commenter. I don't do much on here but read daily and vent an impassioned fans' nonsense on game day threads. I used to get excited when I saw multiple comments pop up on a thread. Now an influx of comments usually means people are bitching at one commenter or it's some meme/image/gif off-topic tangent thread. I don't know when, why, or how but this site went from an amazing place that provided insight into the program and excellent analysis to educate the fans to a place where posters apologize before they hit 'submit'. Hell, I've even seen well respected writers take jabs at TKP fans in the middle of their articles. Maybe it's me, maybe I'm the problem. Maybe my opinion of this website and what I thought it was meant to be was over inflated. Maybe I'm getting older and cranky. I don't know, but something has changed. TKP comment sections are starting to remind me of ESPN comments from years ago....completely useless and a waste of time. All I know is that this place is starting to piss me off and there is nothing I can do about it, be it personally or on the website. There is still, even with all of these problems, no better place to get my VT fix.
This is the best VT website in existence and it gives me the sads that I'm conflicted by it.
End Rant, no /s. I still love most of you.
TL;DR
is this a good summary?

Well, it is the offseason. Not a whole lot of football to gain insight on.
It was the part where Alex wrote a great article about her and people's replies were about her looks. That shit happens to women all the time in professional fields as a tactic to demean and undermine them, as laid out very nicely in a couple of posts above.
This could've been - and maybe still could be - a chance to better understand how your other community members see the world. I get that it's not fun when real life and real talk intrudes on the football bubble, but it happens. Sports and the internet are still part of the real world, a real world in which we've come to decide that comments about attractiveness in a professional context are rude and boorish.
I find it interesting that there appears to be a double-standard in this regard, though. The comments in the articles regarding the hires of Hilgard and Vice were filled with comments about their appearance (many unflattering) that didn't elicit a negative response from the commentariat. Now, I didn't see the coments that sparked the current shitstorm. They were deleted before I joined the fray. Perhaps they really were demeaning or crude. However, a simple observation of "Oh my, she's pretty", if that was the case, does not, IMHO, rise to the threshold of rudeness or boorishness.
I think the difference between commenting on the looks of Vice/Hilgart and Bartelstein is that Vice and Hilgart don't have to establish their legitimacy in their positions. They are interesting looking people, but implicitly we think they are still competent at their jobs. A comment on Bartelstein's looks in this context is loaded with meaning given the history of such comments being used to demean women in male dominated fields.
Honestly, you probably shouldn't comment on anyone's looks because it usually isn't relevant at all, but it is important to remember how language has been used to keep women out of male dominated fields.
I sincerely appreciate the feedback (even though most of it is negative).
I removed that comment. Trust me, it was there.
I read almost everything before it's published, and I can't think of an instance of that happening.
I still believe the content we publish as a staff is top of the line.
However, I do think the comments quality has degraded some. Don't get me wrong, I laugh at everything GUNTAR posts, enjoy pop-ins from Mike London, and petebuddywilson's bagman narrative was one of the best TKP memes ever, but it was inevitable as TKP grew the signal to noise ratio would decrease. However, I don't think the comments approach anything close to completely useless. I think the overwhelming majority of what's posted is either funny or insightful (which hits the mark). (Obviously others don't.)
I disagree. There's plenty you can do.
Contribute and post more of the comments and threads you would like to read. I strongly believe TKP has such a high-level of discourse because the writers and community members have set a high threshold for content. If you feel things are lacking, post an insightful thread or comment. Tell other smart and witty Virginia Tech fans about TKP and invite them to do the same. You, along with other members of the community, have the ultimate power to raise or lower the quality conversations on TKP.
sooooo who wants to post the emma watson gif below this/S

Oh, please don't think I'm against GIFs. I love GIFs.
We know you do Joe.....that's why were now going to all post 'I love' .gifs (like you said), and once again send this thread careening in a brand new, yet still uncontrollable and awkward direction.....
Here - I'll start..........
Dear Joe,

Only one I could find that seemed appropriate for this thread
This is the kind of response that I would expect from you and I really appreciate it. Thank you.
I got my rant off, I feel better. The only thing I would change is unintentionally implying that the articles/writers were substandard. Staff contributions have always been top notch and I look forward to them when I check in every day between 8 and 9 am.
I still don't see it.
Even with this I don't see it. You guys are out of whack.
Tangent: Is Lee Corso's face photoshopped here? It looks... condensed.
dunno. Not by me. It was just the first one that came up in google image search where he's making the same face as Bartelstein.
Bro, put down the polyjuice potion.
Ouch!
I wonder what it was that Fuente saw in her at TCU that caused him to call her back into the sports world and to come to Blacksburg, her interview with Jon Laser helps answer that question, but I guess well start to see here soon enough as she starts her role.
That's a really big endorsement to have someone you worked with previously call you back into a profession you are no longer a part of.
From what I read in different places she was wanting out of the government/legal arena and back into sports. I'm sure they talked at some point before Fuente got hired at VT and she probably let him know she wanted back into sports.
I'm psyched she got to work with Harbaugh at Stanford (as weird and bizarre as he is).
Agreed, he is a strange man, but knows how to run a very successful program. Anything she has picked up from that would be gladly welcomed in Blacksburg, IMHO.
Well after reading all the posts so far in this thread. I will agree with some and say she is def easy on the eyes! But I am glad that Coach FU and VT are breaking the mold, if she has the qualifications, which it appears she does I hope she does great for our university! This is really something we should get behind!
Bartelstein is downplaying the importance of her doing this job, which makes me like her all the more and believe she is made up of all the warm fuzzies that Hokie's should be made up with. That's awesome.
Question though. Is Director of Operations in charge of player pro days? If so I sincerely hope she doesn't learn that lesson from Ballein. What happened on Tyrod's pro day was a debacle that should never happen again. Again I don't know if that was Ballein but whoever it was needed to own up to it at the time and didn't.
(minor soap box rant over)
Man! What happened?

Just rubbed me the wrong way that no one followed up on this well enough to know 100% exactly what our players need to have to enable their best performance possible. Anyway, water under the bridge, I suppose but I always thought it was a disservice to one of my favorite Hokies. And I am just being grouchy.
Not grouchy at all. This is good stuff to know.
Always nice to be on the cutting edge on the evolution of sports.
Pretty ridiculous that women are just now really breaking the mold and getting important jobs in things like football, but hey... better late than never. Glad we're one of the first. Hopefully she is a great hire and we can start bringing in other top talent, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc,
This made me think of this:
The part that saddens me about Ms. Bartelstein: Looking up her profile, I saw she graduated from Illinois in 2006, one year later than I did from VT. It's come to a point that as I get older and I become gravely less accomplished than my peers.
That's a meteoric climb from graduation to Football Ops Dir. in 10 years and extremely impressive. Congrats Danielle, I'm sure you have to be damn good at your job to make that rise in such a short time.
You and I both. Our peers are better than us.
In your defense, it's pretty hard to get anywhere when you're on a treadmill.
American Pharoah won the triple crown at age 3....just makes us all look bad
That's what...she.....
This thread is such internet.
