OT: SEAL Team Physical Training

So I'm going to the free standard workouts (starting this Thu). I'll be doing the one in Beamersville (Hooville). I wanted to know if anyone on here has/is done it and your thoughts and reactions on it. I would like to join but it seems very expensive ($85 mo.). But it looks so badass and cool. Please share. Thanks. Here's the link: http://sealteampt.com/.

Initial thoughts:

1) I would love to get back in shape
2) I'm in Charlottesville
3) I can only see this ending poorly for me

I have never heard of this.
Thanks for posting. It looks really cool. If I can find the time I might try to check it out! (unfortunately, the free trial is at 5:45am during a weekday and I'm supposed to be at work at 6AM)

Yeah, I called and (if you're in Beamersville) it actually starts at 6:15 (or 6'). I gotta be at work by 9:00. The downside is that the free trials DON'T include the fitness assessment. But it's a good way to see if you think you can do the program.

I'm in DC, so not Beamersville (which is a funny name but I'm partial to Charlottesburg personally).

Thanks for update though. I figured the free trial would just be that day's workout and little more. I should probably call to ask some questions myself but out of curiosity did you happen to ask if they only do early morning workouts? Or do they have workouts at other times of the day?
TIA

I did and passed the 2 week basic physical fitness program in Richmond before moving to Bburg...wife and I really miss it, although it caused a major old knee injury flare-up for me. Intense...LOTS of running, push-ups, sit-ups and flutter-kicks...BUT...BEST most supportive group of people to exercise with...you get hooked as the most fit of the group help the beginners through teamwork. It's really well run. The VCU men's bball team has been doing this for at least 5 years now...and he trains other college teams. I highly recommend at least committing to the 2 week program then decide if it's worth it to join. Once you've done that, if you join, you go anytime you want as a member, flexible times in RIC for sure, but not sure how many different time options they offer in Cville & DC. The former SEAL who runs it has an amazing story, is a great guy and is nationally reknown (knew Chris Kyle & knows his widow, and has often appeared on CNN & other news channels giving his perspective as a retired Seal)

SEAL training, huh? Sounds tough, make sure to stretch thoroughly before doing it

It's true-- so true, in fact, that it's officially Rule #18

It’s later than you think.

That's a sea lion. Not a seal.

Is there an award for "GIF Use of the Month"? Because I've got your first nominee as well as February's winner right here.

The founder lives in my neck of the woods. I see his Humvee all the time. I've yet to hear negative feedback about the program, hope you make the most out of it.

This looks pretty awesome, but I do see two obvious problems:
1. This will inevitably lead to douchebags bragging about how they did SEAL training. This definitely isn't that, even if it's loosely based on it.
2. Given the nomadic nature or the program, and the type of activity, this seems like a massive medical liability.

seems like a massive medical liability.

Potential or definite? Also, in what ways?

Potential. High stress activities (both emotional and physical) in large groups, largely in the dark, in locations that aren't specified far in advance. I'm sure they've got safeguards in place, it was just something that stuck out to me. First aid quals, access to an AED, access to cell phones (with reception), a vehicle on standby in case there's an incident they can get the person to actual medical help. That was all stuff the Navy required just for simple PT at Tech. And it was still kind of a clusterfuck. I bet this dude's insurance premiums are ridiculous.

I bet he has all of that covered and a vehicle designated as emergency transport as well.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Oh you definitely sign lots of waivers and MAY be required to see Dr. before starting depending upon your answers. He has a strong legal support team. They are also very careful with trying to make sure you work your way up by doing what you can. You pass 2 week fitness course by improving push ups, sit ups, timed run (I think 2 miles), pull ups from dayb1 to day 10

It's not really a new thing, there's a couple similar "SEAL" programs on the west coast already. There's only so much you can do about d-bags like that anyway. And I'm sure there's a nice all-inclusive liability waiver to go along with it.

If they brag about their "SEAL training" to an actual SEAL, the problem becomes self-correcting.

With age comes wisdom. And I'm smart enough to know that this would kill me.

On a related note, the agenda for my company's leadership offsite tomorrow has us all starting the meeting with a group stretch. I'm sure the SEALs do that as well.

Seems like just another spin on a circuit training program to me. Lots of those out there, so I'd recommend trying a few of them out and find one that suits you before putting down $85/mo. I hate gyms so the outdoor aspect sounds appealing but it may also get annoying dealing with variable travel times going to different locations all the time.

Don't forget to discretely look around for this on your first day:

I hope you also know that you will be required to kill a puppy before graduation.

Seriously, though...I'm sure this is tough and all, but it is not SEAL training. Are you going to get simulated drowning drills? Jump into predawn 30 degree ocean water? Is there a "hell week"?
Real SEALS train their last 120 hour week with a total of 3 hours sleep. We're talking about a different species here, not normal humans.

I have so much respect for the real deal, as anyone should...I kinda wish there was a way to avoid putting a "SEAL" label on these types of things.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

Oh no!! They've gotten to you already.

Are you going to get simulated drowning drills?

They also do not get drowned....on purpose at least. They do drown proofing drills which are designed to help keep you calm in water. Sometimes a guy may have a shallow water blackout but it brought back up and given air immediately and checked by a medic. But there is no "simulated drowning".

Jump into predawn 30 degree ocean water?

The pacific ocean doesn't get to 30 degrees. You'd give people hypothermia by putting them in the surf of 30 degrees for a while. The avg water temps around San Diego (where they train) is the high 50s in the winter and on up to the low 70s in the summer. Now those water temps aren't exactly warm bath water. 50 degree water is cold but it's not going to kill you as long as you watch it. I'm sure they have safety measures for putting guys in the water out there. But it's not 30 degree water temps.

I kinda wish there was a way to avoid putting a "SEAL" label on these types of things.

THEY put those things in front of them because it sells their product.

Sorry for the truther rant but I can't stand the hype around those guys. Not bad guys and great Americans though.

Of course it's not BUD/S. They never say it is. They aren't making you into SEALs, they're just getting people into really good shape fast, which is what a lot of military training is specifically designed to do. Do you also get bent out of shape at all the fitness programs called "Boot Camp" based off of initial Marine or Army training? This just happens to be based off of what the Navy does for selecting SEALs.

I did it years ago in Richmond. I thought it was a great program and the trainers were great. It was tough, but motivating.

The most impressive portion of the SEAL training is the post-military marketing course they must all take. I mean you put SEAL in front it and BOOM $$$$$....cash-cow.

But if it gets you back in shape then go for it.

Speaking from experience perhaps??

Negative- let's just say I wouldn't want my wife to take up daily training w/ some dude that involved the two of them helping each other over obstacles. That 'teamwork' has led to several 'out of class' partnerships. But hey, give it a try!

We're here for you man. Let's talk this one out because obviously this is coming from a weird place for you. It sounds like you may have some knowledge of this happening, but not first hand, as you stated.

Nah- it's cool but thanks for the offer. Just a running joke between some friends anyway. Besides, I already got a down vote for posting on the topic anyway!

Do it! Try the 2 week course, then decide if you want to join for sure. See my comments under another VPIhokieME above
