Brief Bud Foster Interview with ESPN

ESPN published a short interview with Bud Foster that included some interesting quotes from the Hokies' defensive coordinator.

"Tackle is going to be solid," Foster said. "We'd like to see Tim Settle come along and improve and grow. He's a big kid who can run and do some special things I believe. He's working really hard in the weight room and in our early morning running sessions."

Foster mentioned this on national signing day, but he wants to make sure the defensive backs have a set roll as opposed to learning multiple positions in the secondary.

With Facyson out, rover Terrell Edmunds might have to slide over to cornerback for the spring.

Foster also prefers Chuck Clark at safety and Adonis Alexander at cornerback, and wants to find the best roles for Mook Reynolds and Anthony Shegog.

"We don't have a lot of depth," Foster said. "We have a two-deep so we want to get them in the right spot to where they can learn and grow and develop and play that position and understand the expectations of that position and how it fits in the defense, where they fit and work on that. We're going to settle in on who our best four are back there, and we're going to get that right. We have to get that right."

Settle morphs into a bowling ball at the end of that video. Looks agile for a big guy.

Would rather see the rovers and safeties stay where they are and find another replacement at CB

I know it's cliche, but at least it's off season (spring) and not a week before Liberty.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Rip his freaking head off!

What I read out of this is "to be great we need great corners, so we will try find who can play corner best out of what we have, and fill in from there."

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Ladler, Rodgers, Floyd, and ?Quillen will add to the mix.
It will be critical to get Facyson back.
If we do, then I like what we have coming in and coming back.
Coach Mitchell will have some good stock to work with.
Looking at the roster, the staff has definitely added some 'length' to our secondary.
I didn't realize Payne was listed at 6'3"!

Edit: And I left out Alleyne.

For opposing offenses, the Payne can't be measured.

Left the team due to academic issues. Did not have to transfer. Looks like he got his business in order and has re-joined the team as a walk-on.

Oh ok. Awesome. The thing that stuck out to me about Payne is him committing on the spot and getting emotional because VT was his dream school. I'm pulling for the guy

I'm so glad that Bud wants to find set positions for the members of the secondary and is making that a priority going forward. All the rotating became necessary because of the injuries/depth issues but starting to define the roles now makes me a lot more confidant especially when you can see the specific skill sets some of those guys have (Edmunds, Alexander esp.)

Do they do any sort of weigh in for current players in the spring? I am curious how Settle is coming along as far as weight.

Should be the first day of camp, but I can't recall the date.

Anyone know why Huelskamp is out?

The quick feet on Settle. The low center of gravity on Settle. The size of Settle.

Timmy likey. Timmy want wingy.

the numbers donโ€™t lie and they spell disaster

rover Terrell Edmunds

Am I the only one who double took on this little tid bit? He definitely doesn't look the part of rover but if that's what Foster thinks is his best position, I'm not going to disagree. He showed some promise playing corner last year, made some big plays one on one against big UNC receivers.

This stood out to me as well. It seems like we may see the same growing pains we saw last year if we swap Terrell and Adonis

I feel good about Adonis at corner. He is ridiculously athletic and his size and length give him potential to be a true shutdown man to man corner. If he has the footwork and hips, he could be truly special outside.

We need a rover though. He just spent a year learning that position

And by the end of the year he was almost exclusively playing corner. Pretty sure it's a down deal that he'll be a cb and if last year is any indication, he'll be a damn good one.

The bigger issue is that they were freshman - one a true freshman.

It's funny how often completely incongruous position switches are seen as solutions and yet relatively congruous position switches are seen as detrimental - when the exact opposite is more generally true.
