ACC Wrestling Tournament Seeds Announced

The ACC has announced the seeding of the wrestlers in the ACC Tournament, which is on Sunday, March 6 at JPJ Arena in Charlottesville. The Hokie Wrestlers were the best seeded team with 7 wrestlers receiving #1 or #2 seeds. Here is a complete list of all Hokies and their seeds.

Joey Dance: 1
Dennis Gustafson: 3
Solomon Chishko: 2
Sal Mastriani: 3
Nick Brascetta: 2
David McFadden: 5
Zach Epperly: 2
Zack Zavatsky: 1
Jared Haught: 2
Ty Walz: 2

Full Bracket

At first glance the tournament seems like a two horse race with NC State checking in with 6 wrestlers seeded either #1 or #2. By totaling the seed numbers for each wrestler on each team we get a little clearer picture of how each team may do at the tournament.

Virginia Tech: 23
NC State: 24
North Carolina: 38
Duke: 40
Virginia: 41
Pittsburgh: 44

This shows two things:
1. Virginia Tech and NC State are both very complete teams in terms of talent at each weight class. This is why both had incredible success in dual meets during the regular season.
2. There is a substantial gap between the leaders and the rest of the pack.

I would highly recommend anyone that is close by to go watch the tournament. With how tight the competition will be the atmosphere should be electric.

Thanks for posting. I've been waiting for this to come out. So if I'm doing the math correctly, VT has a 1-point advantage over NCSU (before bonus points) if everyone lives up to their seeding. Should be a great tournament.

Don't think of it as scoring, think of it as a rating of how well the team is expected to do, with the lower rating correlating to a better outcome/more points scores. Its shows how thin the margin is between VT and NC State and how wide the margin is between them and the rest of the field.

Yes, but they do keep score to determine the winner of the tournament. If I have it right, the winner of each weight class gets 10 points for his team, 2nd place gets 7, 3rd gets 4 and 4th gets 2. Then there are bonus points for major decisions, falls, etc. which I wouldn't dare try to project. Excluding the bonus points, pretending that the seeds accurately predict the final results, I've got:
VT - 63
NCSU - 62
UNC - 32
Duke - 28
UVa - 24
Pitt - 21

One other bit of good news for the good guys: Mastriani is the only Hokie wrestler who needs to finish higher than his seeding to auto-qualify for the national tournament.

I am pretty suprised by that. I think he has a good shot, i remember him having a great tourney last year so hoping for a similar performance. Was thinking 133 would need a good showing and didn't realize that Mcfadden was going to be such a low seeding given he is ranked.

Sal had a pretty good NCAA tourney showing last year, but went 0-2 in the ACC tourney. I think he'll be eager this weekend to prove that was a fluke.

McFadden just happens to wrestle at a weight where the ACC is loaded. The conference has gets 5 automatic bids to the NCAA's at 165 with only 6 teams. All he needs to do is not finish last, and he's punched his ticket to Madison Square Garden.

Any additional advice from anyone who has been before on parking/ times/ seating/ getting there early/ etc??? I've participated in VA Duals, high school regionals, and whatnot but not sure what to expect at JPJ / ACC Tourney.

The ACC posted a write-up on the tournament which can be found here.

Sal M. with a tech fall
Mc Fadden 6-3 win over Weirchoc from Pitt.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Gustafson with a bye.

Dance should be up on Mat 2 around 1:00

Did anyone notice that Mizzou was wrestling in the MAC tourney yesterday? What the SEC doesn't wrestle? WTH?

It is on 3 but not listed in ther schedule. Had to go to ACC page and find the link.

Crap it looks like espn3 is not streaming the rest of the tournament.

Dance looks lack luster (as he can) beating Harmen (uva puke 5-3.)

No the SEC doesnt sponsor wrestling, they are the only P5 conference that does not. Mizzou is also the only SEC school with a team.

But hey they have Equestrian though!

And that is because of their Big XII roots. I am glad they held on to wrestling.

My feed is pretty crappy

The actual video or just the commentary? I've got it on the chromecast and it looks fine

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The commentary keeps going out, probably my internet though

Actually I had the best feed ever today.

Me too

7 made it to the finals! Go Hokies.

It could be worse.

No upsets so far for Hokies. Underdogs lost and Favorites won.

Not true, McFadden pulled a slight upset in the 5 to 4 matchup

Slugfest between the top two. I hope they were saving it for the finals.

What did Brachetta do. I did not even see him.

He got a first round bye and won a relatively close semi-final bout.

Almost 7! GO HOKIES!

Sully and Nick both lost. That probably means that NC State is going to win this one. They basically all have to go perfect from here on out.

Fuck!

Figured it would end this way since they had 4 one seeds, but overall a pretty solid day outside of Sal and McFadden showed really well even against the NCST guy who crushed him not long ago.
Any guesses if Sal or Gus can pull an at large bid?

Unfortunately it's almost certainly no.
