Hokies Earn Sixth Seed In Upcoming ACC Tournament After 77-62 Trouncing of No. 7 Miami

Superb play of Justin Robinson leads the Hokies to their tenth conference win.

Mark Gottfried won 5 games in the ACC this season. Jamie Dixon and Jim Boeheim mustered just 9 apiece. But Buzz Williams, mired in a rebuilding job that many thought impossible, bested them all, the 43-year old coach's latest victory a 77-62 trouncing of No. 7 Miami that clinched the Hokies the sixth overall seed in next week's ACC Tournament.

Raise your hand if you saw that coming.

Nobody? Didn't think so.

"It's just a collection of scraps, all kind of thrown together, and we've learned how to make it into a meal," said Williams. "I don't know that anybody in that mix could have thought that this would happen."

The runaway victory over yet another top-ten foe marked the Hokies' tenth conference win of the season, a number that seemed laughably unattainable four months back after Tech's season-opening stumble to Alabama State. But slowly and surely, this Hokies team grew, their latest five-game winning streak coinciding with the sudden emergence of freshman point guard Justin Robinson.

"He's playing at a very high level," said Williams. "Five's fun to coach. Five's really fun to watch if you're a fan. I have to be careful that I don't become a fan of him because he's got little-man syndrome like a lot of guys his size, but I don't know that you can quantify the competitiveness coupled with the IQ that he plays with. He makes the right decision at a very high rate. He has a skillset to back that up. It's his IQ that's coming to life more and more."

Robinson dazzled from the opening tip Saturday, mixing in an array of highlight-reel assists with a productive scoring night that had the diminutive point guard looking the part of best player on the floor.

"He just grew big balls," joked forward Zach LeDay. "He's taking big shots. Making great moves. I told him the whole game that he had control of the other point guard on Miami...He was crisp. He didn't turn it over. He made the right plays when he had to. He's really growing up."

LeDay had the unenviable task of matching up with Miami's physical frontcourt led by hulking senior center Tonye Jekiri, but the undersized South Florida transfer pillaged the Canes inside to the tune of 16 points and 3 boards. LeDay's fiery personality was on display for 40 minutes, his trademark scowl seemingly glued to his face as the Hokies raced out to an early first-half lead.

"I like guys that most people think are no good," said Williams of the unheralded LeDay. "That means you can coach them however you want. Typically, I'm best coaching guys that allow me to coach them however I want. I don't think that Zach or anybody could have thought he would do what he's done."

Justin Bibbs paced the Hokies from behind the arc with five triples on just six attempts and finished with a game-high 19 points. Fellow backcourt mate Seth Allen had a far less efficient afternoon, but the Maryland transfer repeatedly darted into the lane and got to the line against a Miami team known for their tough defense.

The Hokies went with a matchup zone for the majority of the contest, mixing in a few possessions of man-to-man to keep the ultra-talented Canes honest. Without the bench support of Ja'Quan Newton, Miami relied heavily on star guards Davon Reed and Sheldon McClellan for their offensive firepower, but the Hokies limited the duo nicely aside from a brief second half run.

"We turned the ball over 5 times in the second half in the first 5 minutes," said Williams. "And no matter what you're trying to accomplish defensively, teams as talented as they are, if they're playing in a broken floor, they're gonna score. I thought we did a better job today of our offense helping our defense."

Miami struck first in the game's opening minutes with five quick points from Reed, but Jalen Hudson and LeDay teamed up to send the Hokies into the first media timeout nursing a 7-5 lead in a high-energy first four minutes at Cassell. The Hokies never looked back from there, extending their lead to nine just 11 minutes into the game. Miami responded with a brief 4-0 run, but the Hokies proceeded to push their lead back into double digits heading into the break.

Miami ratcheted up the pressure early in the second half and cut the Hokies' advantage to just six before Williams called a timeout with 14:15 to play. Williams' timeout chat clearly hit home for the Hokies as Allen and LeDay each buried triples to maintain the Tech lead. The Hokies kept their momentum with big buckets from Kerry Blackshear Jr. and Robinson, and Bibbs hit back-to-back threes with just over 8 minutes to play to give Tech a 62-45 lead. Miami head coach Jim Larranaga burned a timeout in an attempt to quell the Hokies' momentum, but the Canes never seriously threatened from that point on as Tech coasted to a 15-point victory down the stretch.

Shane Henry scored just two points on his senior day β€” a two-handed slam early in the second half β€” but the Decatur, Georgia product received one last ovation from the Hokie faithful as he kissed the Virginia Tech logo at midcourt before exiting for the final time with just over a minute to play.

The Hokies clinched the sixth overall seed in the ACC Tournament with the victory and thoroughly boosted their postseason resume in the process. The NCAA Tournament remains a ways off β€” the NIT is still the more likely landing spot β€” but a few wins in Washington, D.C. this week could have bubble talk in Blacksburg for the first time in a half-decade. Florida State and Boston College will square off Tuesday for the rights to play the Hokies in the late game Wednesday evening, and if the Hokies were to get past their second-round foe, the third seed would await on Thursday.

But bracket talk aside, the Hokies' underdog mentality headed into the postseason remains unchanged.

"If you're picked 14th and you finish 6th, what other mentality should we take?" asked Williams rhetorically. "If you could google my story or anything I've been involved with, I'll always be able to answer that question the same way."

And regardless of what transpires in Washington, D.C. this week, Williams knows that this season will hold prime real estate in his memory bank for years to come.

"What has been as good as I've ever seen particularly as a head coach is the spirit and love that they have for one another and how they play for one another. That's rarefied air that you find that anymore in the millennial generation, that you can get everybody in one room and everybody's pulling in the same direction," said Williams. " That everybody in there, regardless of their title, are pulling, 'How can we get a little bit better? How can we get a little bit better?'"

"It's been a lot of fun."

Pretty annoying whenever I try to enjoy a win I have everyone tell me Buzz is leaving for a bigger job. Hope it's not true.

Did you read the last quote in that wonderfully written article? This is what he coaches for. I do not think he would leave this team for anything. The future, who knows, but I think he wants to be a part of it as much as I do.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

First ACC tourney I've been interested in in a long time. WOW.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

It's absolutely amazing how our basketball team has progressed and how I have enjoyed watching basketball much more than football this year/season. For example, I never thought we could beat UNC, Miami, Ohio State or even Duke in our football season. However, I always had a feeling we could pull off the upset against the same teams (minus OSU) in the basketball season and we did against UVa and Miami and came close to UNC and Louisville.

If you had told me we would have a more successful basketball season than football season at the beginning of the season I would've laughed at you. Glad I was proven wrong (or, meh....still kinda sad about our football season but hopeful of the future).

I've watched every game this year. This was our best game by far! The combination of insane defense in the match up zone (the rotations were consistently on point) with the 3 PT % and the offensive intensity (especially the transition game!) Was the most consistent complete compilation skillset game these guys have played. Buzz has got these guys believing 100% at the right time. Watch out acc tourney, this team is too hot to touch!!

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Being the hot team at the right time is what matters most in March. We've got something no one else in the ACC has right now; we've got a winning streak.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

That L18 next to BC though....

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

0-38 Bro.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I've probably looked at the standings 10 times since last night

Great team play.. It apears we are peaking at the right time, at least for the NIT. They definitely grew into an unselfish team playing under the master, Buzz. Good luck guys!

i think we're in the NIT imho. We have the longest winning streak in the ACC

Pour some Beer on it

Earned the 6th seed, indeed.

" He just grew big balls".
Did Leday just say that on camera?
Whatever they're feeding the athletes in Blacksburg, I want some of that when I visit.

Split the two teams ahead of us, and swept everyone else. Should have another home court advantage over Miami...but one game at a time...

Side comment - I really wish the ACC (and other leagues) would just do a standard, single elimination, 16 team tournament where no one but the 1st seed (and 2 seed this year, cause Louisville) get a bye.

Agree on this, absolutely. Coming in as the "hot" team with a stifling defense; having split UVA and Miami, and with close losses that could've been wins against UNC and ND - this team will be able to retain the confidence. I hope our Metro area DC fan base will turn Verizon center into a home game.

Not only that, but this team is having "FUN" playing the game, and being Hokies. That is one thing that's struck me watching this team in Cassell the year - they are absolutely having fun being a team. They truly love playing in Cassell - they have noticed the return of the fan base, the resurgent Cassell Guard, even the packed house last night despite it being day 1 of spring break. Everyone has an identity, a part to play, and they embrace it.

Nights last night in Cassell are the payoff for sticking by our beloved Hokies.

And no surprise there, it's Wally Lancaster with an airball that looked gorgeous on its way to nowhere...

I was looking at the bracket and thinking "there's a team missing."

Then I remembered LOLuisville.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

It's actually kinda sad for most of their players. Their season ended last night, even though they are basically a 4 seed type team. Pitino is gonna go scot free on this one, and players that did nothing are being punished.

This is a fair point.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Miami is gonna be salty if we get past our first game

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

For anyone that can't make it (me):

The tournament will be carried by ESPN, ESPN2, and ACCNetwork (ACCN).
All games will also be available on WatchESPN and theACC.com.

Man I hope Buzz's buyout is really high. Good win boys, lets keep the momentum going!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

Basketball is fun again in Blacksburg. What a season and no doubt should be Coach of the Year. If we can win 2 games in the tourney it is going to be real difficult to keep us out of the NCAA's and guess what "We deserve it". Look at how we are playing at the end of the season, that is what matters, how do you finish and Buzz has taught this team how to finish. GO HOKIES and let's just win the whole damn thing.

It won't be hard to keep us out, our rpi would still be in the 80s.

The curse of Alabama State. That one loss hurts so much.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

We didn't schedule like a bubble team because we weren't one. We aren't a tournament team this year. That's okay, just enjoy that we are way ahead of where our coach thought we would be when he setup the schedule. Or maybe that easy first two months allowed us to grow to this point.

As though we would have beat someone else? It was a shit game because this team had a lot of growing to do. And grow, they did.

RPI still way too high. Even with two wins, won't get in. Will have to win the tourney to get in, which I wouldn't put past this bunch! Helluva season. Really excited about the mental toughness. Win a couple in the ACC tourney and maybe we'll get a home game in the NIT. More basketball in Cassell!

T_Sprad3

Yeah, but does the selection committee really look at RPI over records, and how a team is trending? I've been watching this crap way too long to realize that if a team gets 20+ wins, and a winning record in the most competitive basketball conference, that they would only be the 80-90th best team in the country, unless you're including NBA teams. Outside of Alabama State, we pretty much won the games we should have won, and it wasn't like we played a bunch of cupcakes in our non-conference games. If our RPI is still over 80 after winning a couple more games in the ACC tournament, then all that's saying is that RPI is based solely on statistical calculations (e.g., see BCS), has nothing to do with how a team is trending, and shouldn't be the sole factor on NCAA tournament worthiness, which I don't believe is the case anyhow.

Regardless, we win ACC tournament games, and we should be in the NCAA conversation.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

RPI obviously won't still be in the 80's with two more wins. It would be higher bc that would include a win over the 3 seed, but it will
Be in the 60's most likely. Still too high. I respect that you've "been watching this crap" for a long time, but it doesn't change what the RPI says we are or the fact that it's a major deciding factor in the committee's decision. For better or for worse (probably worse).

T_Sprad3

Agree that they aren't really in the discussion. Had they been able to pull out one of the UNC/Louisville/ND games I think they'd be in solid shape but the crummy RPI, bad OOC and the fact they've been off the radar most of the season will doom them. They're 3-10 this year against the RPI top 50 (with some ugly beatings there) but 15-3 against everyone else. Their one bad loss was their first game of the year. They've handled their business against the teams they should beat.

After watching this team play in the last two weeks, I say bring on anybody. They way VT is playing right now they can play with any team that steps on the court. That D is crazy good.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

I honestly haven't been more proud of a Virginia Tech team since the 2010-11 football team. It seems like they just absolutely love each other and don't care about anything that anyone is saying outside of Buzz and his coaches.

NIT is a lock at this point, 5 games ago I thought if we hit this Streak and won two in ACC tourney we get on bubble figuring one of those would be against #1 ACC Seed. Didn't see us actually grabbing the 6 Seed which kind of hurts our chances with a 2nd tourney win over #4 Miami that we just beat. So it's gonna take 3 wins a tall order, but my hand is UP. GO HOKIES great season congratulations BUZZ ACC COY!

Stop it with the Negative Waves!

I don't think the NIT is a lock yet. Need to win at least one and probably 2 ACC Tourney games. As hot as this team is, winning one game should not be a problem. Winning game 2 will probably depend on who we play. This season was fantastic, whether we get a bid to the NIT or get passed over.

If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is probably not for you.

Game 2 would be the rubber match against Miami.

Finishing 6th in ACC locks up NIT.

Stop it with the Negative Waves!

We finished 7th. Not sure we have lock yet.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Officially 6th with Louisville out of the picture. We are projected as a 4 seed in the NIT. NIT is a lock. Win a couple and we get a home game.

T_Sprad3

With Louisville out of the picture we finished with the 6th seed in the tournament. But there are six teams above us in the regular season standings.

I agree. Not necessarily because we need another win but a loss to FSU or BC (both horrible teams) would be a shame. Also, VTs RPI really isn't that great, and a loss would put us out of the top 100 in RPI.

Justin Robinson is a super-star in the making (emphasis on "super").

JR made Rodriguez look silly. Totally outplayed him. Kid is Bryan Randall like leader with Bimbo Coles skills. WAY more athletic than given credit for.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

They definitely EARNED their ranking in the ACC tournament, with style. It is great to see them climbing, best of luck.

That was the best game I've been to at Cassell (first game was in 2012). Better than OK St., UNC, Duke last year

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Anyone think we can make tournament next year we only lost Shane Henry and adding Khadim Sy from oak Hill and have lots of experience next year

Born in Charlottesville, Reborn in Blacksburg

Yes.

Sy won't play. Kj, Johnny, Satchel will rotate at 5.

I'm going to be the first one to say this (I think) but it will be disappointing if we don't make the tourney next year. It would be massive underachievement. I think we'll go to the sweet sixteen.

Last year I thought this year we could go about .500 and win 6 ACC games. We exceeded that.

(Edit: Sydney to Sy and some typos. phone autocorrect. sorry to bump this, was on a cruise, just don't want to look like too much of an idiot)

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Hokies really have something to be proud of. Forget the great record, possible NIT birth etc. These guys played very hard all season, even in some of the losses. Which really impressed me. I watched the PITT loss (BOOOOOO!) from start to finish, and VT played hard even when the game was completely out of reach. Buzz has these guys playing like winners. And this Miami game., good lord was that fun to watch. I've only been here for three years but that was easily my favorite BBall game to be at.

Your username and profile pic make me feel weird feelings.

Looks like my fianc and I will be at the game tomorrow! My boss just called and said he had two extra tickets that I could have. In the nosebleeds but that's where I sit multiple times a year for caps games so I don't care. Lol surprising gesture from a Hoo considering he always gives me shit about being a Hokie.

I was confident about a rematch with Miami but now I'm getting nervous about this FSU team. Playing with a chip.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Just take it one game at a time. Focus on FSU tonight, and then be confident about Miami after we win tonight.
