Wow. This.... is probably not going to advance his career. I really thought someone in the lower divisions might take a chance with him at HC.
It is his alma mater, so I'm not altogether surprised.
I wish they had said what his job would be, though.
That's what i was wondering. Went to find his twitter account for some hope of mention and couldn't find the account. I swear he had one.

Just says assistant coach.
Excellent hire by the Dukes. Stinespring has proven he can help JMU beat Virginia Tech.
I need to start wearing clothes.
Sorry we caught you in the shower, but this was breaking news.
I was so lost until I looked at his avatar.
Never been big on Stiney.
He was a nice guy and I think he showed a lot of character. That being said, I don't really have any heartburn over losing him. I think he'll be fine. I think VT will be fine. Life goes on.
The players all rave about him. Can't find the quote online (maybe it was an old tweet, idk), but I recall Logan saying he would have transferred if Stiney wasn't retained. I also remember Tyrod being a big fan of Stiney the person (maybe not the play caller).
Edit: apparently Deangelo was a big fan too.
Agreed
Yeah, I agree but I'm not sad about losing him at all. I won't be keeping up with his career or life. I think he more reflected who Frank was but did not have success on his side of the ball. Good luck to him and all but I'm not tremendously affected by it.
Stinespring was his recruiter.
Also, purple was his high school colors.
I'm just sayin'.
I will admit to being one that never liked Stiney for OC. Not ever. He may have had a few moments, but I never saw how he earned the position. I will also admit that I always liked him as a person, and it was obvious the players and coaches seemed to really like him as well. I think he just became a lightning rod for a growing fan dissatisfaction with VT's perceived offensive conservatism and disfunction. He'll be a happy camper at JMU and they'll probably love having his experience there.
Agreed, and by promoting him to OC instead of doing a nationwide search for a top OC really hurt our chances of growing into a top tier national brand. He seemed to be a good TE coach though and I wish nothing but the best for him at JMU (unless they are playing against us).
Does this mean Frank is going to have to get a new secretary?
I loved at a Richmond Hokie Club recruiting night event when Stinespring said he would never get fired because Frank said it's harder to find a good secretary than a good coach.
I absolutely believe that. You have to pay good coaches.
I saw him in my work today and he's already sporting a JMU jacket. Said they have him out recruiting and he mistakenly told a kid that "We want you really bad at Virginia Tech," lol. Wasn't sold on taking the job until he stepped foot on campus and felt back at home.
Glad he found a position in the state, that should help him get picked up to a bigger school in a year or two if that's what he wants.
He's always been such a humble guy. Everyone at some point in their life reaches their professional ceiling. How you react to that moment will speak volumes about your character.
+1 Well said. Wish him nothing but the best.
It says a lot about him as a person to see everyone go from pitchforks and torches a few years ago to well wishes now. Wasn't the right fit for us at OC, but he's a solid coach and recruiter and a genuine, good guy.
I wish him the best at JMU. There's only one school in Virginia that I root against, and it's about an hour southeast of Harrisonburg.
He was a really solid OL coach. We moved him off that spot to bring in Newsome, even though Newsome only had one year experience at OL at JMU. The whole thing may have been very different if we had just assigned Newsome to TE and kept Stiney at OL.....since it was Newsome's OL that was the basis of the offense unraveling those years.
I really thought Bryan Stinespring was going to be the next HC at VT at that point....around 2005. The offense was purring along, we got Marcus because of moving Stiney to OC, we were recruiting Tyrod, we had more RB's than we knew what to do with. Funny how one move potentially had a huge effect. Newsome!
I never really thought about it like that. Those are some pretty valid points. It's not like we weren't stacked with potential at the two positions that touched the ball in that offense.
Marcus Vick falls under the realm of potential
Biggest problem with Stiney is what you just admitted. He was an Oline coach that was promoted to OC and even when he was OC he never coached the QBs. How do you run an Offense when you never coached or played the most important position to the entire team. Most offenses that are very successful are run by QB oriented people that at one time or another were QBs themselves.
He was a really solid OL coach. ? That could be debated. He was a great recruiter and TE coach. Not sure how much his position players liked him.
Stiney announced as TE coach and run game coordinator.

JMU's new rushing attack also announced. Draw, draw, screen, punt.
Would've liked him to become head of recruiting. He has been our best recruiter the past 7-8 years. Consistently brought in 4-star talent, that have frequently performed at a 5 star level (David WIlson, Bucky),
FWIW a highly touted recruit from a few years back, who committed elsewhere, said that Stiney was awesome from a recruiting standpoint. A great guy that he absolutely loved, one of his favorites in the whole recruiting process.
Unfortunately for the good guys the kid felt that the other school was the better fit for him.
Nothing but the best of wishes to Stiney from this Hokie!
that's a real shame
ouch
That's missing numbers right?
I saw that number and figured a couple scenarios might be in play:
1. Is Stinespring getting some kind of buyout from VT?
2. He's made and saved enough money, lives comfortably and doesn't need a big salary for one year, and is betting on himself that he'll find a head coaching job somewhere in a year.
I just went through the last JMU pay disclosure I could find and assistant coaches at JMU made from 24,000 to 71,000 tops. The pay difference from FBS to FCS is crazy.
I don't think there's any buyout for him. As I recall, Frank and Bud were the only coaches who had contracts lasting beyond last season. I'm assuming he's been smart enough to save up a substantial nest egg, given how well he was compensated at VT. For all his faults, I don't think Stiney was/is a dummy. Coaching is not a career where job stability is a given. Any Division I coach who doesn't save up enough for a year or two out of work (or working for substantially less money) is flirting with disaster.
He will likely only be owed money through June or July 1 I believe because that's when the previous staff's letters of appointment expired. Bud was the only one on a longer contract.
I saw that number and
figured a couple scenarios might be in play:reached for my calculator.Dude took nearly an 85% paycut. That is astronomical.
I seriously doubt he's getting any type of severance package from VT. If you remember, he wasn't fired. He just wasn't retrained. Everyone's contract was up for renewal this
Januaryyear (except Bud) and they weren't renewed. I doubt very much if any of the outgoing coaches receive any financial benefits from VT moving forward.I have to imagine that he has saved some money, but going from salary X to 1/7X is going to be a huge hit for anyone. Harrisonburg isn't going to be much cheaper than Blacksburg. His family's quality of life almost certainly will take a hit.
I do think he's counting on moving up quickly. He'll need to. I can't imagine supporting a family on 50K. Even in a place as affordable as HBurg. I would be concerned that if going from TE coach at the FBS D1 level to TE coach at the FCS level is the best he can do then he might not last much longer in the industry without some serious lifestyle changes. Prospective employers may look at that move as a big red flag.
Only time will tell. I wish him the best, but this isn't a good look for him. I hope things get better for him but I'm not very optimistic.
Most of America probably wants to slap you for that remark.
....the sad truth :(
won't comment further on that...cuz...politics
Harrisonburg, VA:
Average Household Income = $62,883
Median Household Income = $48,619
Assuming Stiney's wife doesn't work (and why would she if your husband is making 200K+ in Blacksburg?), then they will be making $12,883 less than the average home in that area.
I'm hoping that he has some money saved but if he doesn't, then some major lifestyle changes will be needed. Mostly because you'd have to live the life of a rockstar to not have any money saved with a 200K salary in SW Virginia.
He has two girls who are getting ready to start college this is going to hurt.
State employees receive free tuition for their children at their institution if not other in state schools as well.
Since when!! My mom has worked for VCU since 1976 and I had to pay tuition!
What? I don't remember that from when my wife was a state employee.
I think it's for employees of state universities, not the entire state government. I seem to recall VT having a similar program when I went there, that paid the tuition for children of university employees. I have no idea if it was a statewide program, or specific to VT.
That is correct. Sorry for misspeaking. VT will allow employees students to attend for free.
My current system (University System of Maryland) will allow children of university employees to attend any other in system school for free.
In the UM system, located in Baltimore - somehow I'm beginning to wonder if you're like next door to me. I work at UMB. Is that where you are? Not to get all creepy and whatnot, but I'm curious...
Creepy? Don't worry about creepy. I know where VPIhokieME lives.
Wait - that's not a good thing?
*shudders*
Yeah... I've been meaning to ask, could you please get around to trimming the hedges outside your house? They are getting really uncomfortable to sit in.
UMBC actually. I live in Catonsville proper. So just outside the city but surprisingly close. My twitter likely gives it away.
That's actually not true. Virginia state schools do not give free tuition to employees children (even if the parent works in that school). They have to pay the same in-state tuition as every one else.
Looks like you're right. I must've been thinking of this scholarship program: http://www.givingto.vt.edu/AnnualGiving/employees-spouse-dependent-schol...
I remember talking with one of the building maintenance workers in my dorm one day and he was complaining that the job and pay weren't very good, but he stuck around so his kids could go to college here. I must've just assumed that employees' kids got a free ride, not that there were scholarships available to them. I stand corrected.
To be fair, I have first hand knowledge of it. My dad was personnel director at VT for 27 years...and I got squat!
Many schools are like that. I know University System of Georgia offers an out-of-state tuition waiver to bring the cost down to the in-state level so folks who get a job with them and don't qualify for in-state because of a move can get their spouse and children in-state tuition.
Because she has personal aspirations? Why make the assumption she doesn't work? Maybe make the assumption she doesn't currently have work in Harrisonburg with the recent move, but I wouldn't assume she doesn't work.
This has absolutely nothing to do with gender or personal aspirations.
If I lived in SW Virginia and my wife made 200K, then I would definitely be a stay-at-home-dad and find some hobbies to enjoy, instead of sitting in a cubicle for 8 hours a day. But maybe some people want to sit in a cubicle.
What I was saying, if one spouse is making 200K, it isn't like a second income is needed to get by. Especially in Blacksburg.
It's a pretty safe assumption, I believe. (Not that I have any direct knowledge of their family situation). I think that most spouses of big-time college football coaches don't have a career. Division I college coaches make more than enough money to support the family, and tend to work insanely long hours, as well as doing a lot of traveling. If there are kids in the house, as is the case with the Stinesprings. somebody has to take care of the things like the house, the bills, the kids, etc. that the coach doesn't have time to offer much help with. There really aren't a whole lot of fulfilling careers out there that offer the kind of scheduling flexibility that a coach's spouse would need.
Wasn't Brian's wife Beamer's secretary for many, many years...
Correct, hence the numerous speculations regarding Stinespring getting the OC nod over Kevin Rogers.
Also, I automatically assume that all football coaches' wives don't work. I obviously know that this isn't the case for every coach but if I were a betting man, my odds would be right a majority of the time.
I make this assumption not because of the salary that their husbands are making but because of the commitment the wives have to make to be flexible and ready to pack up and move at a moment's notice.
It's really hard to have a career if you're constantly moving across the country.
I wouldn't be too worried. Dude made an absurd amount of money for over a decade in an extremely low cost of living area. Even with a moderate savings percentage and relatively conservative investments, wouldn't surprise me at all if he had $1 million+ in investments and savings. It's entirely possible this job is just a hobby with a bonus of some walking around money + free JMU tuition for his daughters.
Of course I could be completely off base, but I'm certainly not going to worry about someone who made 5-10 times median pay for a large chunk of his career. My first assumption in the giant pay cut isn't that there's some financial catastrophe, it's that he doesn't need the money and is doing it to spend time with his family and find fulfillment.
I'd agree if he were at a more visible program... but he's not. Those are some long odds with a low reward. It's rare enough that a position coach gets an HC gig. It's even rarer that an FCS position coach gets an HC gig.
It's probably also relatively rare that a FCS position coach has a power-5 resume like Stiney. I'd bet he's at least a coordinator at the FCS level or a position coach in FBS within a year or two.
Wow. I hope he invested wisely over his gravy train years.
Some D1 schools made a huge mistake now picking him up. He's a good position coach, above average recruiter and an all around humble, likeable guy.
Hopefully he won't be in Harrisonburg long.
This right here makes me kind of glad Torrian is getting some experience outside of the Beamer coaching tree. Stinespring was the only one of the previous coaching staff to only have experience under Beamer and he is the only one who didn't land somewhere roughly equivalent.
Wow, that's less money than I make and I'm in the fucking Army.
I thought about doing an "Upvote if you make more than Stiney" comment but I didn't know how well that would go over...
I wouldn't upvote... :(
Too bad Joe got rid of the upvote/downvote totals (for good reason, and an improvement in all ways except this exact scenario), cause that would be interesting to run a little poll.
Can I just say that I thoroughly enjoyed your comment, that it made me both laugh and smile. Leg for you sir!
Great KP quote
My favorite has always been,
"..a true champion, face to face in his darkest hour will do whatever it takes to rise above. A man fights, fights, and fights some more. Because surrender is death, and death is for pussies."
Wow. This is pretty much like the rest of College Football ratifying the purpose of the FireBryanStinespring blog. That's gotta sting.
I think he'll bounce back, but he most likely won't ever see the kind of money he was making at VT again unless he can get himself a HC gig somewhere and start building success on his own merits.
"Gee Bryan, we were gonna pay you a real coaches salary, then my secretary dug up this old archived blog she came across and now I just don't feel like you're worth the money."
FWIW heard from #sources that Stiney turned down a job at Miami and Richt to stay closer to home and coach at his alma mater. Not sure how much they were offering, but I'm sure it's more than he is making now.
Stiney has been pulling down major coin for nearly two decades. I highly doubt that his current demotion will do much to upset his living standards, assuming that he wasn't absolutely stupid with managing his money.
You mean assuming he didn't manage his funds the way he "managed" the offense.
You mean being as conservative as possible and criminally underusing his valuable assets?
I would think if he ran his finances like he did his offenses, he's essentially retired by now.
Of course the argument could be made that he didn't really turn a profit off of them. I mean if you equate abysmal stats and rankings with the way he manages his finances, then that is/was foolish and his ass be broke.
heyooooo
