Ok Hokies Fans, once more unto the breech. Tonight our young Hokies face an extremely tough task in the Cougars, a team that keeps up quite a frenetic pace through most of its game but is also extremely dangerous from outside the perimeter. If you though Princeton liked to shoot the three, than let me give you the Cougars, who like the Tigers before them shoot almost 24 three point attempts per game. They also eerily make about 10 per game, just like the Tigers. After that though offensively, these teams are just about polar opposites. BYU likes to run and run and run until you cant run anymore and then run you out of the gym to finish off games. They played almost exclusively on the West Coast this season, with top wins coming over Northern Iowa, Gonzaga and St Mary's. The only P5 schools they faced this season are Utah and Colorado, both ending in losses. They are currently 15-2 at home this season, including their first round win over UAB and Robert Brown 97-79.

One thing to keep in mind on how much of a home court advantage Provo, Utah can be is that the elevation is almost two and half times that of Blacksburg at over 4500 feet which can make teams have difficulty late in games that are not used to the elevation. There is unfortunately no quick fix to combat this for Buzz so expect to see a heavy rotation of almost the entire roster to keep guys fresh throughout the game.
This team may have higher scorers but there can be no doubt that the soul of this team is Kyle Collinsworth, (#5) 6'6, 215 Lbs Senior Guard who continues to set an NCAA record by getting his 12th triple doubles of the season against UAB. Previous to Collinsworth that record was 6 in a season in the NCAA. Collinsworth so far has averaged 15.3 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 7.5 APG, and 1.9 SPG. He shoots 45% from the field, only 65% from the line and 25% from beyond the arc.
The Cougars top scorer this season is Chase Fischer, (#1) 6'3, 190 Lbs Senior Guard, who has put up 18.2 PPG, 2.6 RPG, and 2.1 APG. He is a 41% shooter from the field, 83% from the line and 36% from outside.
Nick Emery (#4) 6'2, 185 Lbs Freshmen Guard is the second leading scorer for the Cougars at 16.4 PPG, 3.3 RPG, and 2.5 APG. He shoots 43% from the field, 83% from the line and 39% from outside. These two guards will account for the majority of the Cougars attempts from outside. So far on the season they have attempted over 500 three pointers between them, making 195 of those.
The Cougars do have a fourth player averaging double figures in Kyle Davis (#21) 6'8, 225 Lbs Junior Forward. Davis has scored 12 PPG, 7.6 RPG, and 1.6 APG. Davis shoots 54% from the field, 61% from the line and over 46% from outside.
After these four starters, the most impactful remaining Cougar is Zac Seljaas(#2) 6'7, 215 Lbs Freshmen Guard, who averages 7.3PPG, 2.8RPG, and 1.2 APG. He is their floating sharpshooter like Bibbs is for us. Seljaas is shooting better than 49% from outside on 60-122 shooting. We will definitely need someone that has a hand in his face all game long. They use a style very similar to ours by driving inside and then kicking out to open perimeter shooters. This is probably the biggest area of concern for the Hokies tonight since we have been vulnerable to outside shooting all year long.

The Hokies will once again need the services of Henry and Blackshear to disrupt passes to the interior while the other three concentrate on being all the way out to the perimeter. Collinsworth does most of his scoring inside so disrupting him could have ripple effects on the rest of the Cougar squad. If fatigue becomes a factor than Buzz may even be forced to go deeper into the bench to play Pierce and Hamilton some as well.

This game could look very similar to our last game, except it may be the Hokies that are trying to settle things down into a much more grinding pace to disrupt their opponent. Expect this game to remain close throughout, trading leads back and forth in the final minutes, possibly requiring overtime. I just wanted to go on record (in case nobody else has said it to you before) to offer my deepest thanks to you for putting these together for each game this year. I can see there's a lot of time invested in producing these, and I for one get a lot out of them.....I find myself watching the games and thinking back to the breakdowns you've given on specific players, schemes, etc. and enjoying that knowledge you've given me as I watch the games.

This is the most poorly officiated game that I have seen all season (and I've watched every VT game this year).
The FSU game (in the ACC tourney) takes second place. But not because of the calls being lopsided. They literally called a foul if a player looked at a player on the opposing team.
We're right in this. We played good defense, didn't get some calls, and fought back when they started out hot. Hopefully the fouls will even out a little in the second half and we can pull it out

Glad you all seem to see it the way I do. I have a hard time not feeling like the officiating is just poor. Usually, I admit that I see it O&M, but tonight I just see poor officiating. We can still beat these guys, though. Limit their easy inside buckets and make them keep taking those long outside shots. Yeah, if they make 'em, we lose, but I think we can stop them and scrap our way past them, the stripes, and aaalllll those fans there .
And again, I was WRONG. Those crazy free throw fans were unsettling, and BYU did, indeed, hit their long threes when they needed to. Oh well, on to baseball and spring practice.

I did post that this season was better than last year. Of course I've been drinking and am frustrated and did not want this season to end. But the worst insult I can or have ever been given is being a wahoo "fan" or any connection thereof and it only makes it worse because I reside in this Shithole.
It got to the point where it seemed like you were rooting for us to lose just so you could be correct in your prediction that we weren't coming back. And then the unnecessary aggressiveness when he didn't even call you a UVA fan. The frustration is completely understandable, we're all frustrated, but keep in mind we're all on the same team here. And I think this team has earned us believing they'll pull it out after the resilience they've shown all year long. I wasn't ready to give up hope until we trailed by 5 with 4 seconds left. Until then, I'm not counting this team out
I was not rooting for us to lose. I was accepting inevitability. I admire your enthusiasm and belief that they still could/would pull it. But for me, when it gets that late in the game, I tend to go more by stats, trends and numbers. And statistically, when it gets that late in the game, with the objectives that were not being accomplished (in addition to the officiating) their chances had significantly decreased. So based on that, I had accepted the fact that they weren't going to win. And he may not have outright called me a UVA fan, but he did make a reference. And, as I mentioned earlier, that's just about one of the worst insults you can make to a Hokie.

No technical on their coach, no bad two possessions by Blackshear, any endless number of fouls called or called and one, the foul called that gave them three free throws where the whistle happened after the ball had been rebounded, the no call when their big man managed to go one dribble from the three point line, Wilson foul called correctly as a charge, technical fouls called on the several occasions they struck Hokie players above the neck, or cut Blackshear above the eye when they kicked him in the head, somewhere in there I imagine there might be three points
We really need somebody to go all billionaire and start buying us some sugar bowl/ NIT games. I'd volunteer, but have been working it hard, and it ain't happening. Who's stepping up?

I don't care what anyone says, Cassell is way more lit than that arena. Their fans seemed to not understand the game of basketball and they didn't seem loud in the last minute of the game other than when we were at the line. Give me Cassell and our fans any day of the week over that place.

The officials...words cannot describe. Telling stat: BYU had 4 fouls in the first half, 14 in the second. Did they suddenly forget how to play or change their game?...no...the officials started calling random fouls. These guys should not be hired back next season. Worst thing I've ever seen. Hard to end your season like that.
They seemed like intramural refs someone found in a gym on campus at BYU
yeah. Buzz clearly needs to make them practice shooting with a section full of led flashlight waving students behind the basket.

Well that ends it for the year. BYU got a ton of breaks, 34 FT attempts to our 21. But, Tech still had its chances and lost it with key turnovers and missed free throws, 14 TOs to BYU's 8 and we shot just 57% from the line. That loses games. Hopefully, personal shooting practice starts tomorrow. The players own work in the off-season is the only thing that can help FT shooting.
Overall, a great improvement over last year. GO HOKIES!
Those refs were incompetent, we couldn't make free throws, our freshmen made freshmen mistakes, and the season is over. Fuck all that.
But what VT fan thought we'd be complaining about this 2 years ago, 1 year ago, after we last to Alabama state, after we lost 7 out of 8 in ACC play? I'm so damn proud of this team and so thankful that Buzz came to VT to work his magic. It was certainly one hell of a season, and I can't wait to watch what this team can do next year.
I'm frustrated beyond reason. I'm grateful this team had a better season (according to a lot exceeding). I hope Buzz keeps the buzz going for at least half a decade and we make multiple appearances in the NCAA tourney. I have nothing to say about the officiating because as a Hokie fan I'm used to it. In fact I've acknowledged it as part of our programs identity. Until something very serious is done behind the scenes (Hokie iluminati) it has been and will continue to be fact-of-reality. That's all. Next year, just fucking win.

Couldn't be prouder of this team, but man those last couple minutes hurt. Really tough to see KJ and Robinson struggle tonight, but we saw about both ends of the spectrum with those guys. The thing I'm most upset by is the fact that we won't see any more basketball for a while, and that's OK.
Lady Hokies still have another game, so Tech is still playing basketball until at least Sunday.
