After the dust and pollen kicked up from spring practice settles, we're left in the middle of nowhere. We stew in not only the summer heat, but our thoughts and speculations on what the season will bring. The days are longer, and time drags on as if the fall will never arrive. The scent of Skipper's smokey blast is just a memory.
Then it happens.
August arrives and camp schedules are announced. Meaningful yet meaningless preseason rankings are released and we can almost taste the turkey legs and bourbon. It's a grueling waiting game that involves too much reading, analyzing and watching whatever we can get our hands on. Nothing makes us want opening kickoff more than a slew of hype trailers. With our adrenaline rushing, and blood boiling, it's as close as we can get to satisfying the intense craving for football.
We know absolutely nothing will tame the craziness you're all bottling up inside for that evening kickoff on August 31st, so instead we offer our understanding and sympathy the only way we know how. First... that was amazing. Every video keeps getting better. but also wanted to share this with you all.
I just watched this at low volume in middle of Starbucks in Shanghai. Three Chinese guys sitting next (2 at one table 1 at another) to me had following conversation:
guy 1: Wow, what is that? Rugby?
guy 2: I think it's the other Australian sport.
guy 3, at other table, cuts in: Look at it. Its a movie from USA. Must be about a fantasy PK (translation: deathmatch) sport.
guy 1: That looks fantastic.
guy 3: It will never come to China cinemas.
guy 2: I'll remember to check in DVD stores. They usually have all Hollywood movies.
guy 3: We should ask the foreigner what it's called.
guy 1: No need. A movie like that must be a blockbuster. Will be at front of the store.
then guy 1 and 2 say some things I couldn't hear. And guy 3 brings his phone over to them: I just took photo of his screen. Do you two want it?

Really is high quality work. Chinese in general are only just now becoming aware of football 'Merica style but it was fun listening to them. But I showed this to the guys in my office as well from UK, Australia and South Africa (and two others from USA) which started a great convo about sports in various countries (mostly rugby v football). Most stadiums for rugby games in Australia are around 20,000 seats at best. They couldn't believe we pull 60k for a university team on a weekly basis and that there are so many teams doing the same or more. I had to find the proof that the Miami game measured a small earthquake and show them our entrance.
Anyway, can't wait for what you guys do next.

Seriously epic movie. 2 things I gather from that:
1) Logan won't have to do it all himself, which enables him to be a much more powerful weapon (ex: RG3 with Alfred Morris, good WR's and great TE's).
2) Anton Exum will be missed as long as he is not on the field.
Regardless, the vibe from the coaches and players is reminiscent of the good ol' days of blue collar football. Nothing is a given, we are never entitled to 10 win seasons...every second of every game is earned, not granted.

Just a little tidbit, we had originally taken out the light effect that occurs when Corey Marshall slams his hands to the ground (at 1:10). Joe asked why we tossed it and I said because it looked too much like a hadouken. He said I needed to add it back. I asked why and he said, BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE A HADOUKEN!!!

Yeah, at least a personal foul. That shot was high and turned out to be very helmet-to-helmet due to Weatherford leaning down into it.
I dunno that I can remember a game with more amazing highlights for our team. I remember thinking that day that Tyrod would win a heisman in his time with us. THOSE are the unis we need permanently. No more throwback hideous garbage.

Maybe the odds are slim. Maybe we won't win. But dammit, when I was a student (not that long ago), it didn't matter who we played. Our students stood behind our players. We believed in our team. We believed we had a chance to win every game if we outplayed the opponent, outworked them. It's not ridiculous homerism to believe in your team. No one would rightly say that we're going to blow out Bama, that's just not real; no one blows out Bama. But believe that maybe, on any given Saturday, that scrappy team that no one gives a chance in hell might just surprise some people.
Hokie Nation is better than this. Believe. Win or lose, stand by your team.
