Virginia Tech is unranked. I'm not sure if that's deservedly, or undeservedly so. Yes the offense is unproven and shallow across the depth chart, but Frank Beamer has won a lot of games with a stout defense and sound special teams, which the Hokies are almost certain to have this season. However, it seems a 7-6 season and a spring game lacking offensive firepower didn't impress the voters. Historically, Tech's embraced the underdog role, and this will be more motivation for the Hokies.
There are 6 SEC teams, 5 Big Ten teams, 5 Pac-12 teams, 4 Big 12 teams, and 2 ACC teams.

Who is overrated, who is underrated, and what's your take on the Hokies being excluded?

Comments
I feel that being within the top 5 "others receiving votes" is a vote of confidence though. There is apprehension after our performance last year, but we still have respect. Our time will come when we #BEATBAMA. Then there will be no doubts.
We don't deserve to be on there after a 7-6 season. Then again, neither does USC.
My overrated schools -
-Ohio St - good, but not #2 good.
-Louisville - recieving the patented WVU "surprising bowl-win bump". I worry with a high early ranking and a pathetic schedule, they'll back there way into contention...
-Texas - they're always ranked high... I've sorta started putting them into the FSU and Miami "I'll believe it when I see it" catagory
I normally agree about Texas, but 15 seems ok this year mostly because of this: who in the big12 is going to challenge them? Wvu without geno? Baylor with all new wrs and another new qb? Oklahoma with a qb that's seen lots off action but only attempted 5 passes? Kansas state without klein? Texas will probably lose to Oklahoma state (if they play each other) and drop 2 more to one if the above teams, but overall i see there rank more as indication of how weak the big 12 will be this year.
That said, Oklahoma is way overrated. A weak defense an offense that struggled last year, a qb who can't throw and no weapons around him
A weak schedule doesn't mean you should be rated higher. I see it all the time and it drives me nuts - people rank teams based upon where they think they'll finish, not how good they think they are, hence Texas, Ohio St, and Louisville rising up higher than they ought to initially, then hanging around up there because their SOS sucks. If a team's sched is a cakewalk, they'll get up the rankings simply by being undefeated (a la Boise St). No need to give them a head start.
I get your point, but looking at the other teams, I dont see another one I'd put above them other than michigan or nebraska - and they have their own issues too. There are overrated teams up there, but Texas (unlike most years) isnt one that jumps out. We'll see soon enough though...
Now if you want to talk about easy schedules, being overrated, and ohio st ...then yea its frustrating.
Football season its almost here!
ohio state most likely at the very most loses 2 games. and with the confounding media love for the big ten they will still end as a top 10 team even on the off chance they lose 2 games
The Big-12 plays a round robin every year, so Texas and Ok. St. will definitely play each other.
I do agree that 15 for Texas feels right from my point of view.
I prefer it this way. Keep the blue collar attitude and make the players feel like they are being disrespected and snubbed. Then tell Gayle and Tyler that AJ was talking bad about their mothers and sit back.
Sadly, I think we will be something like #25 when the AP comes out so that they can hype the Bama game more.
Holy hell, there are 51 teams that someone thinks are top 25.
And 11 SEC teams. The only teams left out were Mizzou, Kentucky, and Auburn.
Also, TCU seems awkwardly high.
I think that might be for LSU v TCU.
Well then what about VT vs Bama?
People are going to watch VT vs Bama no matter what VT is ranked, mostly to see the #1 team in America. LSU vs TCU on the other hand? Meh.
They got Pachall back. When sober, he's good. Actually, he might be pretty good drunk too.
Ummmm..... I know everyone hated that they got into a BCS bowl last year, but Northern Illinois? They are returning 16 starters from that team including Jordan Lynch who is really good.
USCw seems too high for me. They had an underperforming year (preseason #1, lost to GiT in the bowl game), mediocure QB, and depth issues (because of lack of scholarships). Think we should've been 23-25 rather than them. Of course Miami is ranked higher than us...because "they're back".
Will be a funny poll when we #BEATBAMA on 8/31 and they are ranked higher than us on 9/1.
At the end of the day, I like being ranked as it gives us exposure with top-25 scores, etc...but it really doesn't matter. I just want to be ranked #1 for one poll...THE LAST ONE!!!
Phil Steele disagrees. I also like where he puts the Hokies, when all said and done. And, USCw and VT's 2012 were a little bit similar, but at least VT has their "#1 draft pick" back behind center in 2013.
How is Wisconsin 8-0?
They played UNC, Ohio State, Penn State, UCF, Miami and 3 FBS schools.
Just kidding...think it's a typo.
When we beat Bama the rankings will go crazy anyway, so it doesn't really matter. A shift in power is about to occur.
Only team I think is vastly overrated is Notre Dame. As always of course, but they lost a ton and can't be expected to win all those close games again this year.
not surprised at all that we are unranked. bring it on just put another chip on our teams shoulders. just more motivation to go out and #BEATBAMA
Tennessee's schedule - yikes.
6 week stretch (bye week after Georgia). Still a tough schedule.
thats life in the sec. at least they have the balls to schedule a big time ooc like oregon.
And I hope they lose every last one of those games. I hate Tennessee worse than UVA.
I completely agree. I absolutely hate Tennessee. Ive been to a couple Alabama UT games in Neyland Stadium with my dad when I was in high school and their fans are the absolute worst. Nothing like being 17 years old and getting beer poured on you on a cold October night because Bama smacked Tennessee. I want to see Tennessee lose every game they play... and that orange color they have just reminds me of puke.
"They low down, they dirty, they some snitches" I think we can agree with bama on this one.
That is one of my favorite interviews ever
Stanford and Texas were the two that jumped out at me that seemed to be too high. Notre Dame of course gets more love than they deserve. TCU and Boise both have big question marks at 19 and 20. I thought we might crack the top 25, but its no big surprise that we didn't. Once we leave Atlanta victorious, we'll be well on our way to the top.
Question, if on the off chance we do in fact lose to Bama, in a very close game, do we become the first team to jump into the top 25 after a loss?
I thought we might do that when we played USC back in 2004 but it didn't happen. Tough to bump anyone in after a loss, no matter how well you play.
I think we might if we kept it within 3 (with a couple of lead changes) or overtime.
I'm honestly pretty happy we aren't in the top 25. It motivates the team more, and now nobody can say that we are overrated.
okie state finishes 8-5 (one game better than us) and comes in at 14th? i dont know much about whats going on in stillwater this offseason so i guess i'm missing something.
sucks to be irrelevant. Gotta fix that.
