We all know the gist, but here's a cool story from ESPN's Andrea Adelson about how it went down:
http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/91893/how-a-meeting-in-the-dark-of...
Love this:
The meeting lasted between two and three hours as the men worked to get a feel for one another, to see whether they could work together. Foster wanted the head coaching job after Beamer announced his retirement, and had to put his own feelings aside to truly assess what he wanted to do.
"After putting 29 years into this place and knowing what we can do and what the potential can be, whether he was going to keep me or not, I wanted to make sure Virginia Tech was going to get the right guy," Foster said. "We hit it off."

Great move on everyone's part!
I can't believe Foster would risk preparation for the Commonwealth Cup and Beamer's bowl legacy for a joy ride to talk the shit with another coach. The nerve of that guy. /s
You all might not be aware of this, but Bud Foster is awesome.
Trying to imagine what it was like being around Coach Foster on too much strong coffee and no sleep...
you should've seen the other guy! (Loeffler)
Is Lefty still repping for No Doze?
You learn something new everyday...I've always operated on the assumption Bud Foster does not need sleep.
That would explain the D last season... /s
Bud Foster does not sleep....he waits.
Sleep with one eye open!
I am so disappointed in all of the FlightTracker zealots. WHERE WERE YOU ON THIS ONE!!
I guess part of the big bucks coaching salaries is a couple 36 hour days. Either that or Whit was using sleep deprivation to get a leg up on convincing Bud to stay. It all worked out perfectly and I think I will send Whit some high quality gear oil for Christmas to make sure the cyborg mastermind that he most likely is won't be breaking down any time soon
I admit we dropped the ball on that one. We were too busy tracking Rich Rodriguez flights.
Damn this gif. God forbid anyone try to watch this movie ever again without thinking of this site.
who watched this movie in the first place!
I have no idea what movie that is from.
It's a documentary about the coaching life of Rich Rodriguez
Just sitting here waiting on Fireman....

Sorry been a busy morning.
That my sir is awesome. I will shake ur hand one day
What makes it better, it used to be a major Ohio State Gameday bar. There was Ohio State state everywhere inside, breaking it felt great.
I want to upvote this but can't with, he who shall not be named in it. Going to find another of your posts and give it a leg.
Nobody would have saw it on FlightTracker. It would have been blacked out.
ESPN Blocked at work. I will say that putting Foster on a plane and not giving much information takes a lot of balls.
I suspect Sam Rogers coerced Bud onto the plane.
Sam Rogers...
...WAS the plane...
So, in an effort to thwart Flight Tracker, Sam just picked up Bud and threw him to Fuente's house. The told Bud to close his eyes and not open them until he landed, so as not to ruin the surprise.
Broke my heart a little to see that he realizes his dream of becoming a head coach may never come true. Love that guy.
Well I just went from 6 to midnight...
Seriously some chills there at the last paragraph about what he believes VT football can be moving forward.
I feel like I've read all about this before, with the exception of Foster pulling an all-nighter and having to hide the fact that he was out of town from the rest of the team.
However, the story never gets old, so rock on Adelson!
this comment and the one below is comically coincidental
ESPN's ACC blog occasionally gets shat-upon on this and other VT message boards, but that's quality reporting. A story probably none of us have ever heard, presented in a compelling manner. Great stuff.
The whole situation is kind of heartbreaking in a way though. Bud Foster became the best damn defensive coordinator in the biz and put a lot of time into Virginia Tech. His dream was to be a head coach and he had to accept that dream may never be realized. He's got a great gig and a lot to be thankful for, but I would really like to see him get his shot, if not at VT, somewhere else (I know thats blasphemous)
It may well be that he's already in his position of greatness.
I'd like to see him realize his dream of a National Championship trophy in his current position.
We all reach our professional ceiling one day. The goal is to be at peace with that day.
Completely unrelated, but love your username and seeing you were from Baltimore kinda made my day. Best TV show of all time, and it's not even close IMO.
I lived there for almost 7 years, but I turned to the dark side and moved to NoVA. Still really like going up there still. The Wire is an amazing show. I wonder if any younger kids watch it, confused by the payphone use?
FTFY
Speaking of payphones...
Prop Joe was a snake but this scene was incredible
I picture can't picture Bud in a jet.... this is closer what I expect his arrival looked like...
It didnt necessarily say he landed in a jet.....

Out of the darkness... a fire will rise.....
That, in particular, says a whole lot about Bud Foster. So proud to have him as a Hokie.
So Foster prepared a winning game plan for UVA with no sleep. I wonder what would happen if he had some sleep? 38:0.
It's essentially a bye week for Bud every year.
You consider it a bye week.
Bud considers it an annual tryout for his players to sign with the WWE.
