Ironic E$PN Headline: How Ruffin McNeil got to UVA

How Ruffin McNeill's 'Time Out' brought him to Virginia

As if the jokes didn't already write themselves. Ruff bought a boat and named it "Time Out."

Still feel bad for him with the way ECU let him go, and he talks about that in the article as well.

Hope you enjoy the ride, Ruffin!

One of the more gloriously hilarious gifs on the interwebz. Love picking out a different poor soul each time I watch. That had to hurt...

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

.

I don't know if pink or yellow bikini have a worse time. Serves 'em right for being on a boat and not fishing.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Serves 'em right for being on a boat and not fishing

as someone who enjoys sailing I take exception to this statement. Boats can be used for more than just fishing. That being said, this guy was an idiot and shouldn't be allowed near boats.

Onward and upward

When at tech I had a friend who was into boats with oversize motors, he liked to keep the top half of the prop dry. Think "massaged" 300hp outboard on a light runabout. I went out with him once, but declined after that. That same season he flipped the boat with a bunch of people on board.

He never understood why I wouldn't go with him when he upgraded to a "really fast boat".

I refused to ride with a friend in a golf cart for pretty much the same reason.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

The pain from just watching that makes me want to run to the emergency room.

In what capacity is he coaching at LOLUVA??

Still feel bad for him with the way ECU let him go

Btw, if you hadn't posted this up, automatic upleg from me.

I never had any problems with Ruff. Guy was coaching for his alma mater and was let go with no explanation after his first losing season. Just because he was an opposing coach for a team I don't like doesn't mean I dislike him as a person.

In response to your question, he's an "assistant head coach" at LOLUVA.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Yea, but is he focused on any particular unit or position?

UVA has him listed as an assistant head coach and defensive line coach

As someone who has spent an absurd amount of time on the water, that gif isn't the least bit funny to me. It is the stuff my nightmares are made of. The joke, however, I get. This article is a good one, but I shed no tears for Ruff. I hope he sinks in the quagmire he now finds himself in, and look forward to rocking his boat every fall before he deserts the sinking ship of lol-hooville.

Edit: Meant as reply to AhChuckit.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I can't help but be reminded of Mel Brooks here:

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

Yeah...can't say that I haven't done tamer versions of that, but it still cracks me up. The guy at the helm, though he sees what's coming, goes down like a sack of potatoes...the guys in the way back do double head butts on the rail...

The good thing though, as I watched it this time, is that it looks like the guy yanked back on two of the throttles just before going airborne. That may well have saved some lives...maybe, maybe not.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

Yeah, there are some people there with serious injuries.
I blame the guy driving the boat. At that speed, life jackets are a must. you can drive fast but, you need to be prepared. If you are going to show off, you need the skills to back it up.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I agree with you completely here. There is a story about this gif. Quick google check and here it is:

Just read your link, thanks for that. Five out of seven hospitalized, broken bones, etc. Nothing hilarious about it.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

The driver of the boat, Marvin Carter, III of Memphis, TN suffered moderate injuries and a blow to his wallet as well. He's being cited for speeding and imprudent operation of the boat. Five of the seven people on board were hospitalized, four of them with moderate injuries including broken bones

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why I'm in favor of mandatory boat operator courses. He should've been held liable for every passenger's medical expenses. If you're going to be that stupid out on the water (or anywhere, really) you deserve to be held responsible for the consequences of your stupidity. And no, citations for speeding and imprudent operation are NOT being held responsible.

Finally had to take my mandatory boat operator course here in Virginia. While I will not piss on the idea of some form of education before giving someone a boat key, I will say that the course I took here was a joke. Too basic, too easy to really teach anything common sense didn't already teach. Only thing I actually learned from the course was a couple of navigation aids, but three minutes on google would have answered my question about an obscure (around here, anyway) double marked buoy. I agree that the capt. of that boat got off really light. He shouldn't be allowed back on the water except as a passenger, hopefully with a truly responsible operator.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

The PWC license course? Yes, very easy but lord have mercy is it time consuming. But being a regular fisherman/jetski-er on SML and the relatively recent history of crashes and mishaps on that lake, I feel something along the lines of the motorcycle licensing course is needed.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I was just curious and did some googling. Per this USCG report there were 210 deaths attributed to recreational boating accidents in 2014, 2678 injuries, and 4064 accidents (page 54).

Oh yeah, it's a ridiculously easy course. I actually did mine online and you're right, it's mostly common sense stuff. But....well, watch that gif again to see how much common sense some people have. I know that sitting through a class probably won't help deter someone who's determined to be stupid but it's gotta be better than just letting any yahoo who wants to run a boat do so, right?

Common sense, so rare it should be a super power. One of my favorite sayings.

I agree with you. A more rigorous course should be required, especially for new boaters. And you are right, it's hard to fix stupid. As I said, I won't piss on the idea of boater education, but the Virginia course hardly, or if so, barely qualifies as "education". I will say that anyone who can't pass that course should be forever banned from operating any sort of a watercraft, but that is still too lenient.

Went from a chance to poke fun at an easy target to mentions of mandatory boat operation courses....

Ron Swanson always gets a leg from me!

See London just misunderstood ruff. He was askin him how to beat tech as ruff mentioned he had a boat named timeout. London thought he said "you get a boat if you save enough timeouts"
Makes a lot more sense now.

Having had the opportunity to chat breifly with McNeil, he comes across as a very personable, likeable guy, who seems to relate very well to younger people. I wish him nothing but success in finding that next HC gig, because I don't see him staying at LOLUVA for more than a year.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

yeah, he seems like a good guy. My sincere hope is that he spends this year cultivating relationships with future LOLUVa decommits who then follow him to X school when he gets hired as a HC, thus leaving LOLUVa's cupboard bare (where X is a school we never play, like ODU or Clemson).

first I laughed. Then I cried. Then I got mad. Now I'm just numb.

I mean, would anyone disagree with Ruffin becoming a Hokie coach when LOLUVA crashes and burns again? I don't know what he specializes in but I'd love to have that guy on staff. I'm sure we'll lose some good assistants in the next few years as we accelerate into the national conversation.

Meanwhile, the hoos I know think they have their QB of the future:
