I'm on my phone so please forgive any grammar or spelling mistakes, but here are some observations I had with the open student scrimmage.
The event was packed, my friends and I showed up at 7:40 and the line was already halfway around lane. The line moved very slowly until we realized they were checking everyone who wanted shirts by flipping through a giant packet of names, and that there was a separate line for those who didn't want shirts, so we didn't get in until 8:15 which kinda pissed me off. Anyways, I'll try and list some observations I had.
Quarterbacks
They all had about equal reps, I'm sure by design. Evans was with the 1's for the most part. Didn't really see enough throws to make a judgement on who was looking good, with the exception of jack click who made several fantastic throws. Again, I only saw a handful of reps for each of them so small sample size. One observation I had as a whole was they all seemed to be throwing without laces, maybe because Fuente's offense is predicated on quick throws.
Running backs
Nothing surprising, McMillan,Mckenzie and mcclease got pretty much all the reps in that order. Rodgers and peoples at hback.
Receivers
This was an interesting group. Didnt appear to have a set group, young guys got a lot of reps with Isaiah and cam in blue. I would be shocked if Devin Wilson doesn't make the squad. They got him the ball consistently and he made plays, including a beautiful catch where he went up and got a jump ball. Looked like he was getting a rebound. Plus the young guys showed their lack of experience. A few drops, deablo and Bradshaw both had one that I remember. Bucky played a lot on the outside.
Linemen
Didn't see a lot honestly. A few observations were Tim settle drew a few double teams, and got a lot of push into the backfield consistently. Also Trevon hill looks like he's put on some muscle since last year.
I don't know enough about linebacker and defensive back play to give an insight on how they looked. Motu and edmunds at mike and backer, stroman edmunds Clark and Adonis in the backfield. Mook played nickel with the ones and shegog was at the whip lined up as a nickel with the twos. Nothing surprising. Saw addonis matched with Bucky a few times which was fun. They threw Bucky a jump ball and it looked like addonis may have held him, ball went over his head.
Overall it was cool to see the student involvement, and as many sports writers noted, the tempo is much faster than before. Can't wait for Saturday.
