Adonis Alexander and Houshun Gaines Suspended Indefinitely

Virginia Tech announced Tuesday that sophomore cornerback Adonis Alexander and redshirt freshman defensive end Houshun Gaines have been suspended indefinitely by head coach Justin Fuente.

Alexander started 8 games in the Hokies' secondary in 2015 and tallied 55 tackles and 4 interceptions. Gaines had impressed this spring, cracking into the two-deep at defensive end under defensive line coach Charley Wiles.

There is no further information available at this time.

Update: Per the Virginia Courts online database, Alexander was charged with possession of marijuana and has a hearing set for June 27. Additionally, Alexander has a hearing on May 19 for failure to stop/yield while entering a highway.

Gaines was charged with underage purchase/possession of alcohol and possession of marijuana and also has a hearing set for June 27.

Omg no.

and I have a strange feeling we're not really going to hear much more about it...ever. The only news we are likely to hear is either attrition or reinstatement, IMO.

Weed possession for both,

Well at least they arent players we were really excited about and becoming staples of our defense in the very near future......

Don't they have to be enrolled in classes to be here for football?

For the fall, sure.
For the summer? Not certain. Someone else can confirm or deny.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I assumed it was for summer as well. That is why some of the players can graduate after three years.

Okay, thats a sigh of relief, theyll be on the team, Marshall must have perked up early this morning when they first heard, go away Marshall, nothing to see here.

I think that's standard procedure for indefinite suspensions.

BINGO.... same thing happened with Shai and CJ Reavis....

CJ Reavis....

Right because *that* will make me feel better...

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Yeh, the 'no worse than the rest' argument hold no water.

Do we still not know what ever happened with Reavis?

Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.

Not really, and it's best if it stayed that way.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Had a friend get busted for drugs in the dorm, they got deferred suspension for a full year I think, so there's a chance that they'll be back and on the field this fall but no promises

Yeah, but that would still take them off the field in '17, no?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

If Fuente or Student Conduct says so. Deferred suspension is basically "don't get in trouble for a year or you're kicked out"

And the Student Council has been on our side in these hearings. Oh wait...

McKenzie and Reavis were much different cases than this. If they're treated like regular students, they should get 1 year deferred suspension for a first time offense

Ah, I misunderstood "deferred" to mean "you won't serve it now, but you'll serve it next year." Like deferred student loans.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

It's even sort of misleading as it is... It's more of a probation than a suspension, but you have 0 chances to mess up while on that. They'll still be allowed to go to classes and such. Not sure how much football they'd play though, depends on suspension passed down by Fuente and co.

Legalize it!

Breaking the news on puff puff pass Tuesday, no less

I wonder if Fuente will have the same 2nd chance attitude that Beamer had. These are college kids, they do make mistakes, unless it's a Michael Holmes case, and they are kicked out of school. Hell, Shai, Mike Imoh, Marcus Vick all got second chances after dealing with delinquency of minors.

What! Journell got arrested and caught with weed. I don't remember him missing any seasons? Am I wrong on this? I was relieved when I saw it was weed, I figured whatever. See y'all in the fall? Is this not so? Someone HELP!!!!!??

I think 1st offenses are deferred suspensions since 2010-2011. I tried looking it up on VT's student conduct page but they have "it depends" on the punishments.

Everything through Student Conduct now has "it depends" punishments as everything is handled case by case to give students a fair trial rather than a blanket policy of "3 strikes" or whatever else fit the situation. A trial date of June 27 means we will know what we are dealing with well before Fall practice.

I think it depends. I know several people who had to take a semester off

yeah i remember they changed it the semester after my buddy got suspended in spring '11

I remember a poster hung in the halls of Eggelston saying "Virginia Tech has a two... or three strike policy on drugs"

Journell missed the Sugar Bowl. Actually screwed us for the game cause if I remember correctly we had like a 3rd string kicker attempt to make the kick in OT after they overturned Danny Coale's catch.

In that kids defense, he did make the four field goals before overtime.

I don't think anyone should ever even whisper a hint of blame towards Justin Meyer. That guy did FAR better than I ever could have expected. Always knew he was a great kickoff specialist but he really surprised me that day.

Absolutely disappointed in them both. This is always my argument when something like this happens. Just don't smoke it or possess it. Is it a stupid law? Probably. Is weed an overly dangerous drug? No. However, it is against the law so just stay away from it unless it is legalized.

Yup! If you want to change the law, work towards changing it first...Until then, abide by the law like the rest of us working schmucks. It's a damn shame what happened here, but they needed to keep their eyes on the prize, follow the rules and concentrate on what's really important.

Ergh! Somewhere in this thread I posted about there was a time when slavery was the law. Were those who were slaves able to work towards changing it?

Yes, I know what you are saying and basically I agree in this case. But bear in mind, and maybe you already do, it is not an absolute because that's why you said work towards changing it. Look up Jury Nullification and see how it has been used in our country's history for more on that.

Were those who were slaves able to work towards changing it?

I get where you're coming from, but this is a poor comparison. Slavery was only abolished when the laws changed, and some of the most prominent abolitionists were former slaves. Additionally, there's no law forcing these kids to smoke weed. If the law said "you have to smoke weed," this would be a better comparison.

Just to note, I'm not interested in arguing for/against this as an example. Just providing you with some feedback on your choice of basis.

Agree with following the law but it really needs to be legalized. In this context they totally deserve the suspension for breaking the law. But in the grand scheme the law is flawed in my opinion.

If the law changes and it remains University policy, then they would still be breaking it. VT has a policy against this, they broke the law and the policy.

You may not want to hear "just decriminalize it," but what's the purpose of the law. I'm not disappointed or upset with either Alexander or Gaines. I'm disappointed that we live in a system that can ruin people's lives based on something so silly and trivial. I'm disappointed that many legislatures would rather create more laws to criminalize other trivial behavior, rather than fully assess the current criminal system. I'm disappointed that VT has to indefinitely suspend two young men from the football team and potentially suspend them from their education for something so meaningless.

It's a problem with the system, not the players.

Note: This is not trying to be political, but truly assessing a legal situation of the players. Please do not suggest that this comment is based in politics, but rather this comment is based on founding principles of legality and consequences thereof.

🦃 🦃 🦃

I will say that I am very disappointed with them both. If you agree with the law or not, IT IS THE LAW. As a responsible member of society, it is our agreement to follow the laws of the Country. They should have known that they need to follow the law and not think they are better than the law.

I get your point and you are correct, up to a certain point. However saying the law is the law and follow it no matter what is not correct. Slavery was once the law. Stay a slave and do not try to escape it or aid anyone who is a slave is a prime example. But again, in this instance, I think you basically are correct, and as scholarship football players they do have certain obligations.

Because they're not a responsible adult who fully understands the gravity of their actions. Also, it's not that easy to just stop doing something like that. Many probably did it in high school before they got their scholarships anyway so it's not like they just decided to start once they got here.

These things need to at least be handled with some educating and "rehab" instead of zero-tolerance at first offense.

Not letting college athletes see a dime off their own success/brand is a problem with the system; smoking marijuana in a state where it is illegal to do so and purchasing alcohol when underage is poor behavior on behalf of the individuals. I'm still disappointed.

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

Players that have problems following laws, whether you agree with them or not, have problems. These guys have potentially stunningly bright futures ahead of them and they can't abide by the rules the rest of us normal people are expected to. That's an issue, and disappointing.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

they can't abide by the rules the rest of us normal people

Yep. I'm normal. I've broken the law. I'm not alone. In fact, I'd bet most us have broken the law. If my time in Blacksburg is any indication, then every VT alum I know broke the law. This is not about being elite or special. Nobody is asking for special laws. I just simply think no one should have their lives ruined for harmless behavior.

Gaines and Alexander do have more to lose than a normal individual though. And yet, something so petty, will ruin it for them.

🦃 🦃 🦃

I said that we're expected to, you cherry picked a fraction of my response. What you do on your own time is of no concern to me.

If they are worthy of having more to lose than the rest of us, then they can prove it by being responsible enough to follow the law.

I have no sympathy for them, honestly.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Why is what Gaines and Alexander do more of a concern to anyone than what I or anyone else does? Should one really going to be disappointed in two men whom she has never met? Would the situation be different if there was no affect on the football team?

Edit: I obviously offended people when I had no intention to. I thought there was a stark dichotomy between why one would have no concern over my illegalities but be extremely disappointed with trivial illegalities of two young men whom OP doesn't know personally. I guess the question I framed was personal, but I didn't really intend for it to be. I have adjusted the questions to be universal and less direct. I'm sorry if anyone felt offended.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Short answer, yes.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

And for the record, I didn't down vote you. However to answer your question, yeah I care more about what they do than what you do. That shouldn't be surprising.

I also care that we've seen these things escalate in the NCAA and in the NFL. Player gets caught with weed doesn't seem like a big deal (although it calls into question that guys common sense that such a high profile person would allow themselves to be caught in an illegal situation) until the problems just don't stop coming.

Obviously I'm not jumping to the conclusion that these two young men are going to be long term problems, hopefully they learn from this and get their heads on straight and win us a NC. However, I don't think that saying "well it should be legal anyways" is a proper rationalization to it.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Fair points. While, I understand why one would value the suspensions of Gaines and Alexander, I feel like it has more to do with the consequences on the field than the actual lives of Gaines and Alexander. If OSU had as severe consequences as VT, would a majority of VT fans that are currently disappointed in Gaines and Alexander also be disappointed in Bosa? Or would these fans be excited that Bosa not playing might give VT a competitive edge?

My argument is not "it should be legal anyways," but it should be decriminalized. And it's not a rationalization of Gaines's and Alexander's personal situations, but rationalization of all minor marijuana charges. It just so happens, that two of VT's prominent players may have to suffer severe consequences to a minor offense. It saddens me because I cannot reasonably rationalize the current state of laws and policies surrounding marijuana.

🦃 🦃 🦃

I think I'm looking at it from just a slightly different angle, and that's where this disconnect is here.

Whether or not I think it should be decriminalized (and I do...), the law as it stands is pretty black and white right now. Anytime anyone, but especially athletes in a relatively bright spotlight, can't manage to either avoid the stuff or at the VERY least keep it discreet enough that it's not going to impact their careers/lives, it calls a lot about that person into question. In my opinion anyways. Everyone makes mistakes, no doubt. Just hope that this is something that spurs better decisions in the future.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Good points. And, I hope others do learn.

Unfortunately, I see it as a case of two inevitables. First, out of 100+ football players, there will be a fair amount that recreationally smoke marijuana and and eventually one or two will be caught. Second, an overreaching law and VT policy that punishes those caught in possession of marijuana.

I see one inevitable as fixable. The other inevitable, well, I just find it hard to ask 18-22 year olds to be perfect all the time. And, I just cannot bring myself to be disappointed with an 20 year old acting in fairly typical manner.

🦃 🦃 🦃

keep it discreet enough

This is the part that now becomes important. Focus on how the weed was discovered, maybe get it tossed as the result of a bad search. Illegal search means the weed doesn't legally exist means that they can't be charged means that they violated no university policy means no suspension. Bad police work is our only hope, though I've never seen BPD/VTPD to be anything other than total professionals, so I doubt that plays out.

The face that it is petty makes it even worse. These kids could be drafted one day and have their whole lives set for them. When that occurs smoke all you want, but until then play ball. They CHOSE to play with fire and they got burned.

I'm disappointed that we live in a system that can ruin people's lives based on something so silly and trivial

I agree in this regard but it's not so much that it's illegal WRT State laws but, everyone on the team must follow team law/rule. and that's where it must be taught that cutting corners will not help in life. these kids may have followed everything required to be excellent people and football players, but they tried to skate by what i'm sure are teams rules.
That being said, (and this is not to your comment) I think as adults we shouldn't be casting judgements on college athletes that have "everything" and "have it made". This is a teaching point and not a point-and-lash. A lot of us made/make poor decisions in life. I think we hold certain groups of people to higher standards or expect more out of them when at the end of the day we aren't in their shoes or predicament. Perspective is everything. Let Coach Fuente handle it and wish them the best but unless you are perfect why bother stating the obvious. I am no means saying anyone is right or wrong just scrolling through and felt the need to offer some neutral perspective. We need these guys to be a good team but, we also need them to become good individuals for their own sake. Sometimes people have learn by (good or bad) experience.

"This is really a lovely horse, I once rode her mother." - Ted Walsh

How about you be disappointed or upset that they were stupid enough to get caught.

No. We don't know how the situation went down. If it was a traffic stop for failing to yield when merging onto a highway (may or may not be related) that lead to the search, was that stupid? We just don't know the situation.

But to be honest, I have a much longer, dangerously political answer of why I can't be disappointed. This isn't the venue for those opinions.

🦃 🦃 🦃

If it was a traffic stop for failing to yield when merging onto a highway (may or may not be related) that lead to the search, was that stupid?

Yes. If a routine traffic stop leads to an officer searching your vehicle, either you're driving under the influence, talking back to the officer, or have an illegal substance open in plane sight. I classify all as stupid, and one as dangerous to those around you.

Or, it could be as simple as the officer asked the individuals to step out of the car. They get out of the car. And then the officer asked if he can pat him down. They say yes, probably because they think if they say no, they'll be arrested. Officer pats him down and finds the marijuana.

But, I guess that scenario would've been stupid too. They should know their rights to say no to authority, because everyone fully understands their Fourth Amendment rights.

We just don't know the situation. I can't be disappointed.

🦃 🦃 🦃

A lot of people don't know their rights and that includes most college age people

Did Bosa fail a drug test? That might be the difference. They're also coached by Urban Meyer so laws don't really apply.

He failed a drug test, which is different than being caught with possession by police.

I won't even bother arguing that the NCAA's rules are dumb.

Read a pretty good write up I stumbled across on twitter a few days ago about how his struggles with Molly. Pretty interesting stuff, he was doing it secretively, often mixing it into his water bottle at parties and many of his teammates were completely unaware of it, or at least the extent of the problem.

Side note: This is Fuente's first incident with his players not following the "laws"/ team rules. If he wants to set a precedent and be viewed as a good leader he will use this to set the tone for all the players to see and you know the Hokie Nation will be watching and comparing his actions to the past.

Favorite play that never was - "Hooker with the dime to Pimp...leton."

Oh ffs. Come on guys.

OK, a lot of things could be said here... But this kind of thing really makes me upset for a couple of reasons.

1) These kids have the entire world in front of them, an opportunity to change their own future and the future of their kids and grandkids. Just make good decisions, and if you are struggling tell someone.

2) On the flip side... We have student athletes all over the country degrading/abusing/ect. women and still playing football. We have student athletes all over the country (well at least in one part of the country) earning fake degrees and still playing football. We have student athletes all over the country doing things faaaaaar worse than this and STILL playing football. I get that both of these things are illegal, but really?? Have any of us ever been an irresponsible 18-20 year old, even for a moment? I know rules need to be enforced and students need to be held accountable, but it's tough to see kids (who may have just grown up around this type of ethos) get thrown to the side because they make the same decisions they've seen everyone around them make, the same decisions they've always made.

Again, let me reiterate... I'm not for no rules. However these two things in particular seem a bit "college studentesque". I really hope they get some support, I really hope some of their older teammates rally around them to try and help them become quality men who can make good decisions regardless of weather or not they play football for VT ever again.

i had a roommate who was an ISE major who ALWAYS smoked the days leading to exams because it helped calm his nerves and retain the information he studied. this guy always killed his exams and i always laughed at the fact there was a direct correlation between how much he smoked and the high GPA he attained until graduation. last i checked on him, he was working on his PhD...

as for VT students and drugs, well, you'd be surprised how everyone is suddenly looking for Adderall (or anything similar) during exam weeks and how a certain defunct restaurant's student employees carried a wide variety of recreational drugs available to anyone for the asking when i was there (repping the class of '12)...

Phil? Jon? Is that you?

ISE '05 what

Although I don't remember the exams...

I can vouch for this CapeHokie was a model student

Not judging anyone, but I have never smoked weed, and I didn't drink until I was 21. I'm far from perfect and have plenty of flaws. But since you brought those two substances up in a manner that suggests that it's ok because "everyone does it", I thought I'd let you know that not everyone did that while at Tech.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

Have you ever driven over the speed limit?

Barring something excessive that I can't even think of right now, one doesn't runt he risk of getting kicked out of school for speeding.

I guess if you're drifting around the drillfield maybe. Point is... =/=

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

it could be argued speeding is actually more dangerous because you're putting other peoples lives at risk (pedestrians, yourself, passengers, other drivers)

in terms of purely school standing they're not equal but i could see an argument for them being equal in the bigger picture

How is that related to smoking weed and underage drinking? I'm the first to admit that I'm far from perfect, but I was just making the non-judgemental statement that not everyone has smoked weed or participated in underage drinking while at Tech.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

I didn't mean to accuse you of being judgmental (your post wasn't), but my comment was in response to:

you brought those two substances up in a manner that suggests that it's ok because "everyone does it",

There are a lot of laws that are routinely and knowingly broken by US citizens, like speeding, which is ok because 'everyone does it'. It's dumb that you can get kicked out of school for something as harmless as this.

But, this discussion is largely irrelevant. Blacksburg police don't randomly search people for drugs. If you have an illegal substance on you, and a cop feels (s)he has reason to search you, then you're doing something to attract attention to yourself, which, common sense would (should) tell you not to do when there's drugs on your person.

I agree with that fully. But I could also argue that a better way not to get caught is to simply not have the drugs in your possession in the first place. As the video above so eloquently puts it "Stay off the weeeeee-duh!!"

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

I didn't suggest that "everyone does it", and I know that everyone didn't do it even back in the less restrictive mid-70's when I was on campus. But, it would be safe to assume that the vast majority of students did, and still do.

If the school wanted to suspend every student that participated in either, Lane Stadium would be a lot quieter on game days as the VT student section would resemble the crowd at UVA's 'Spring Festivus'.

You are probably in the minority for college students

Nope, never smoked it I went to tech to get an engineering degree. And as a 17 year old freshman, I poured out my roommates bottles after the third time I asked him to get them out of the room.

Now Miami wants to talk about it...

I did both before college. I've sped too (not sure why people keep breaking out this analogy). I don't, however, complain about how stupid rules/laws are when I get caught. Both of those players knew and accepted the risks before they broke the rules.

Add me to the list of those that didn't. Shoot, I still haven't done either, and I'll be 33 next week.

But that's just me though.

(Yes, I've sped. Five tickets in my life, all within the state of VA. Land speed on empty highways is my drug of choice, I guess.)

I wonder if this is a problem for the kids at the Colorado and the Washington schools.

The alcohol thing for Gaines would still matter and the failure to drive properly for Adonis would still matter but the possession wouldn't be a thing, would it?

Also, how much were they caught with? Would it best be measured in grams or pounds? That matters.

if it's getting measured in pounds they have WAY bigger issues to worry about then getting back on the team or even if they get kicked out of school

My brother (didn't go to Tech) knew a guy who got busted for something like 50 pounds of weed. He saw it before the kid got busted and said it was the size of one of those square bales of hay. Not sure what happened to the guy but I'm pretty sure he couldn't say it was just for recreational use.

I'm a fan of anything that can be measured in numbers of hay bales.

It would depend on where they were caught with possession. If it was on campus, it would still be a thing with the University. Off campus appears to be different based upon what I found in the major Colorado schools' student conduct handbook, but it is a bit ambiguous in parts as to whether it is still a violation in that respect.

It's a petty offense. CU still classifies it as a banned substance, same policies would apply as for other banned substances, including suspensions.

When I read this, I don't find myself saying "How could you be so dumb to do this?!", I find myself saying "How could you be so dumb to get caught doing this?!" You have to be pretty dumb to get arrested for possession. That means you walked out of your home with drugs on you, and chose to do something that gave a police officer a reason to search your person.

Not necessarily. I know of a situation in a different VA public university where someone must have smelled it in the dorm and called the police. Police came to suite door, put hand over peep hole and knocked. Residents (idiots) in the suite thought it was friends goofing around and opened the door. Police enter, only find trace amounts remaining but gave citations and had to go to court. All were first time offenders. Total cost b/t first offenders program, mandatory random drug testing, court fees and DMV fees was about $1,000 each. Twenty hours of "counseling", thirty hours of community service, lose drivers license for six months. This is for trace amounts found in privacy of your own space and all first time offenders. And of course repercussions from the school as well. Way over the top IMHO, and imagine adding lose of your scholarship to that.

That's a clear violation of the fourth amendment knock and announce policy. But, it's not surprising police would violate that law, since there are no repercussions (except civil lawsuits) for those violations.

🦃 🦃 🦃

I read somewhere that the police say they are allowed to cover the peep hole, and do it quite often...in hopes you are stupid enough to answer the door not knowing who is there. In any event, it would have cost even more in legal fees to try to fight it. Bottom line don't open the door if you don't know who it is and don't open the door to the police b/c if they want to find something they will. Also heard of police coming to off campus party. Smartly, the guy at the door refused to open the door and let them in when they asked. However, police suggested that he please come outside to talk. As soon as he stepped out the door, he was arrested for drunk in public.

Did that officer make the laws? Did that officer buy the weed for them? Buy the alcohol for them? Make them drink the alcohol? Yea none of those decisions were the officers fault. As for The High School diploma tired joke most large departments now require at least some college credits. You also go through a 7 month academy sometimes longer in Virginia. I suggest you go for a ride along with your local department to see what those officers deal with on a daily bases.

I'd not defending Alexander and Gaines in this instance at all or going after the cops who arrested them. The police obviously correctly arrested them. Good for those guys and Adonis and Gaines are morons to break the law when being on college scholarship.

Being a cop is a very tough job, I'm not denying that either. There's lots of good ones and some not so good. The point I was trying to make is that it does not take a whole lot to become a police officer if one wants to hold a power trip over some civilians.

My comment was made when I was drinking so I apologize if I offended anyone, I see now that it did not come across well. I've also had some good experiences so I'm in no way saying that all cops are bad, I believe most of them are good. However, I've had some bad experiences with some police officers who just seem out to have a power trip over civilians and it is a bit scary. I know some guys who have openly said they want to be police officers for the wrong reasons and went out and got the jobs. Not a good thing.

Edit: I'm also glad to hear that police forces are making some college requirements. It cannot hurt to have a more well educated force of officers out there.

Don't you forfeit that right living in a dorm, because it isn't your property? I feel like I was told something like that freshman year.

Now Miami wants to talk about it...

How is a dorm any different from an apartment or anywhere you rent? It is still your home and the police have to abide by Constitutional rights

So I looked it up and it appears the courts agree. Piazzola v. Watkins was a 1971 case heard by the 5th circuit court of appeals that reversed a marijuana conviction of students living in a dorm because their 4th amendment rights had been violated by the arresting officers. The court also stated that a student living in a dorm is similar to a normal citizen living in a hotel room.

However in an article from American University it was stated that because residents sign housing contracts, the university generally has a right to do general welfare and safety checks, and that anything found against dorm rules can be used against the students if it is in plane sight.

Now if you'll excuse me, this has caused me to have frank Beamer-esq flashbacks to my constitutional law class, and I need a beer.

Now Miami wants to talk about it...

I'm currently in law school and have my final on Criminal Procedure is in two weeks. According to what I've learned, the Fourth Amendment should definitely apply to the dorm room. But, a leg for the research.

But there are exceptions, or ways to get around the Fourth. One is a "welfare check," but there would have to be actual belief that welfare was in jeopardy. Another is simply get consent to search the room from your roommate. And, private citizens, like American University employees could search any room because they're not gov't agents (the Fourth only applies to the gov't).

🦃 🦃 🦃

Richards v Wisconsin created an exception where police are not required to knock and announce at all if there's a reasonable suspicion that doing so will allow the destruction of evidence.

United States v. Contreras-Ceballos stated that police may use deception during knock and announce.

Good luck in criminal procedure.

My daughter's landlord grows pot in his backyard. He isn't worried about anyone knowing about it; just with someone stealing it.

After a good half hour of thought about this, I think their best strategy moving forward is to:

a) Pay the fine and do community service. Start community service now with an organization of your choice. Go to service being excited about about the chance to serve others. I had an underage alcohol charge once, and was given 50 hrs. I did my hours at the National Park Service in Buxton, NC (lighthouse, what), and they liked me so much that they offered me a job when my hours were up. There were other guys around, too, but they had bad attitudes, like they were the baddest guys on the planet because they didn't give a damn they got caught. Don't be those guys. I earned references I leaned on in the future. You made one mistake, don't make another.

b) Volunteer even more of your time to the local community. Once your service hours are served, continue to go back to the same places and do the volunteering thing. Or find new places to go volunteer, but earn yourself some references while you're doing your community service. Maintain those relationships throughout the rest of your college career. Trust me, if you do your service well, you'll want to keep going back. Ut Prosim exists for a reason, live up to it.

c) Keep yourself in peak physical condition. If you can't be with the team for practice reps, get your mental reps in, but push yourselves to improve your physical conditioning during your time away. Don't get lazy between now and fall/whenever.

d) If you can still attend classes while this is being sorted out, now is the time to get caught up and kept up with your studies. You suddenly have free time because you won't be doing anything organized with the team. (Side note, since spring practice is over, will they actually miss any team stuff?) Don't waste your newly freed time.

e) Your attitude towards getting back into good graces matters as much as anything. Take your medicine, do you time, and prove that these mistakes you made aren't the way you're going to be remembered. Know that you made a mistake, it is your fault, and it is your responsibility to fix it.

Don't fuck it up, guys.

Very well said.

Start community service now with an organization of your choice.

It could be different with Fuente/whoever deals with this from the new football staff, but most athletes end up doing community service in Cassell or somewhere within the Athletic Department. Before Jarrell Eddie was warming the bench for the Wizards, he was painting handrails in Cassell.

Another fun fact about trashing players is that THEY SEE YOUR TWEETS. I've seen a few players tweet their support for Gaines and Alexander, but I have also seen a few tweeting at the random asshole fans who are trashing Gaines and Alexander. Mook has actually been very mature, as he carries himself very well from what I tell, and has been intervening to stop other players from responding to the vitriole over social media. But you gotta realize that recruits and the players see this bullshit. Who wants to play for fans like that? Nobody is happy about this but no need to treat the players like dirt.

People who trash others on social media are what I hate most about all social media. I think everyone would agree with me on that. It really blows my mind when I see people trash the kids who they should be supporting.

Yep, completely agree. While I find the news very disappointing, part of growing up is making mistakes along the way and some of those are more costly than others. Unfortunately for both of these guys, it might end up hurting them in the fall come time for the season. Nonetheless, that doesn't give us as fans the right to just start calling these guys all sorts of inappropriate names and questioning their dedication to the program. Was it a stupid mistake? Yeah. But we've all been there, and hopefully most of us have learned a thing or two along the way. I trust Coach Fuente will deal with this appropriately, and I hope Alexander and Gaines can be back out there as soon as possible because we need them both badly.

I think it's pretty naive to think these kids just practice in the Beamer Barn all day or lift weights when they aren't in class or at West End eating. Not saying they are always doing what is right but college and being young is some of the best times of your life and the last chance to enjoy it before work and the real world slap you in the face, again not condoning what they did but I understand it and I'd be a hypocrite to jump on their case. (I never used pot but had a lot of friends who did, especially in college. Drinking on the other hand...)
These kids already dedicate so much time to football when they aren't in class that I bet there are a ton of others not just on our team but other teams as well that want to cut loose and make wild choices every now and then because that's what college kids do, they aren't perfect and it's their first time away from home and on their own and they know their actions will have consequences but so do I and everyone else, but all of us still make bad choices sometimes.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

All you quick to judge, blow it out your ass. So many on this board are quick to label these athletes as "kids" when it comes to just to about everything yet now they should be considered infallible? Get over yourselves.

It's understandable for kids to make mistakes, but it's poor leadership to let mistakes go unpunished. If history repeats itself, they will be looking at some sort of game restriction and a zero strike policy going forward. If the punishment is more harsh than that, then I will agree it's too severe. But this indefinite suspension is par for the course until they have their day in court.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I wasn't addressing due process. Just the judgment of young men on this board.

I agree on the judgement piece. These incidents do not make them bad people. I am sure they are good kids. As the father of 2 teenage boys who have "experimented" it is important that consequences for actions are understood. The older you get the more severe the consequences.

I find it odd that the first thought by many is that legalizing pot would solve this problem. If it is made legal, there would be a 21 year age limit, for which they would still be in violation. Stop excusing poor decision making. I'm not saying that the average college student doesn't partake in the same behavior, but in this case, if caught, the average college student would suffer the same punishment. These players just have more to lose as a result, which should be even more incentive to follow the rules.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Not only should it be legalized, but the age of use should be 18, in the same way alcohol should be 18. Either you are an adult who can vote and go to war and sign legal contracts and make decisions, or you aren't. 21 makes no more sense than 22 or 20 or 19. It's very arbitrary.

But the reaction wouldn't be the same, it would be the same reaction to underage drinking violation which would be most of us saying ok whatever run a few sprints.

See a lot of comments regarding breaking the law and all of us being young and making mistakes. I agree for the most part that they did not violate the biggest law of the land, however they took a risk, got caught, and now they have to pay for it. Like someone said earlier about speeding, hes gonna do it again, and thats fine its not gonna be the end of the world, but he shouldnt get upset if he gets caught and gets a ticket either. Like someone who speeds, they took a calculated risk and in this case the odds turned out against their favor. Sucks to lose names weve been hearing so much good about tho lately. My hat is off to those hokies taking fewer calculated risks.

Regardless of the legal aspect they broke team rules. I don't care if Fuente had a rule that they couldn't eat Owens Cheesesteaks, if Adonis and Gaines broke that rule, Fuente and Co. Could punish them as they wish.

These scholarships are funded by donors...its somebody's money....you know the media always says that rich don't ever help those in need...well you know what to put it bluntly some of these football players couldnt afford to go to college and they are getting somebody's money even if they are putting their body on the line...I don't mind the suspensions...enough is enough..players need to be disciplined...I hope this gets the message across.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

actually they athletes are getting nobody's money and generating millions of dollars for the school... not saying they shouldn't get suspended but the logic you're using seems faulty

Not to spin off into another tangent that has been beaten to death, but yes, these guys are getting other people's money. They get full ride scholarships, stipends on top of that (the new thing in the last year or so), first class training facilities, tutors, nutritionists, etc. That's all value and it comes out of donors' wallets. So yes, they're getting financial compensation that is contingent upon proper behavior on and off the field.

"Exit light..."

ok, let me correct myself: they are getting somebody's money, it is up for debate as to whether or not it is fair compensation
EDIT:my main point was that i'm not sure they should be held to a higher standard then others because they are on scholarship. like i said, i'm perfectly fine with whatever suspensions, etc come of it, i just don't think they should be held to a higher ethical/moral/etc standard

I'd say that's irrelevant to this conversation. These guys accept scholarships under conditions of academic and personal conduct standards. They know what's at risk, and that's the point being made. For many, this is their only shot at a college education. It's up to them to decide if illegal behavior is worth loss of their opportunity.

"Exit light..."

i suppose my view is: what's the difference between a math or engineering student losing their scholarship due to smoking pot and a football player losing their scholarship due to smoking pot? and why do people have a more vested interest in a football player losing a scholarship/being suspended then a STEM student? i feel that money is relevant to the conversation, but for the sake of avoiding a tangent or pay for play argument we'll have to agree to disagree.

perhaps my wording or phrasing could be better, but i personally feel that we shouldn't be holding scholarship student's and student-athletes to a higher moral/ethical standard then the rest of the student body because they already have higher expectations

I can only speak for myself, but as far as I can tell, these guys are being treated like anyone else. They allegedly broke the law, so they face charges. They potentially violated VT policy and will be investigated. AFAIK their suspension does not revoke their scholarship but does put it in jeopardy, pending the legal process. I expect all members of the VT community to comport themselves in a manner reflecting the community's values, regardless of whether you're an athlete or not.

Sure, athletes receive more attention, but that's a product of external influence. Right now, all I see on various news feeds and such is how two VT students were arrested for pot. Not a good look for my alma mater. I want us in the news because of good things - Beamer's legacy, Marc Edwards' team, etc. I don't want Hokies and arrests to go hand in hand, regardless of who you are.

"Exit light..."

but as far as I can tell, these guys are being treated like anyone else.

I'd argue they are being treated much more harshly than anyone else. An underage biology student getting arrested for possession of pot doesn't get hundreds of internet message board posts and hundreds of social media mentions of their name.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

True, but these guys knew what they were getting into when they signed up to play Division I intercollegiate athletics at Virginia Tech. Public figures receive public attention when they do things, good and bad. If they don't want thousands of people talking about their legal matters all over the web (public knowledge anyhow) then don't do dumb things.

Would there be as much outrage if they were 3rd string long snappers? Those guys are also public figures and D1 athletes. I have a feeling in that case there would be a total of 4 comments in this thread, all saying "kids will be kids."

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

what's the difference between a math or engineering student losing their scholarship due to smoking pot and a football player losing their scholarship due to smoking pot?

main difference is there are 4-6 threads on multiple websites criticizing their character and judgement.

meanwhile the STEM student probably has a pissed off mom and dad and that's about it.

The university is treating them the same way. The public may be a different story, but that doesn't entitle them to leniency by the university.

Also, the publicity has trades over an academic scholarship student:
Athletes get (and academic scholarship students don't get): 1st priority on classes, free tutoring, state-of-the-art gym facilities, awesome game room, hundreds of dollars in free VT gear, free nutrition and athletic training,
Tradeoff: some mean people say bad things about you on the internet

not saying the university should give any athlete leniency just was a statement about what was different.

don't think we should play the athlete vs normal student game because it won't look pretty.

Agreed. That is a most dangerous game.

I agree. Setting legal standards for morality...somehow I have a difficult time feeling that these kids are immoral people just because they smoked a dried plant. For years, it was (still is?) illegal to have oral sex with your spouse here in the Old Dominion. It's easy to say "but it's against the law", and I happen to agree that when you break a law and get caught, you are likely to have to pay for it, but for anyone to suggest that they are bad people or somehow immoral, well, that goes somewhere else. This whole thing gives me a headache.

Actually, in addition to their scholarship they get the cost of attendance stipend. So they are getting somebody's money.

This is a buzz kill.

Couple of knuckleheads suffering from a case of DACKS (Dumb Ass College Kid Syndrome).

Yes, you are right that they acted like a couple of knuckleheads. The disappointing part of this story is that they are not just typical college kids doing the typical college thing. Of course most college kids have smoked weed, but that is no excuse whatsoever for this behavior. These two guys were given a chance to represent the university as football players, with all the fame and glory of future wins, endless hero worship, adoring fans, more girls than they can handle...., not to mention the chance of becoming multi-millionaires at a young age.

It doesn't matter what other kids get away with. All they had to do in exchange for this unbelievable opportunity was to abide by reasonable rules. And for heaven's sake that means Don't get arrested for breaking the law!! Instead, they have let down their teammates, their coaches, the fans, and everyone that helped them get to this opportunity. THAT is why they are knuckleheads.

So, say what we will, what are the chances of them doing penance and getting a 1 game suspension and being available for the rest of the year?

Elite athletes are taught in high school what is good to be around and what isn't. Opinions on marijuana differ, and I'm not going to get into the politics of it, but the bottom line is that Alexander and Gaines knew better. They've known better since high school. The Hokie football fan in me wants these guys to get the deferred suspension thing that I have seen talked about on here, get community service hours and leave the rest up to Fuente. When I see this happen to other football teams, though, I want heavier punishment. I'm sure most of us are the same way. Whatever happens, I hope Gaines and Alexander are intelligent enough to realize they are not invincible and that if they want to live up to their potential, they should make better choices.

I have heard radio interviews and read articles suggesting that a surprising number of professional football players have turned to marijuana for chronic pain management as an alternative to the legal prescription opioid painkillers that are now SOP. With all of the minor and major injuries that players experience, they find weed to be more effective while also being less destructive to their bodies and far less prone to addiction issues. It is also claimed to be effective in managing the day to day soreness of their intense training and to keep up their appetites in the face of over-training. On top of that, some players use it to help come down from the "high" they experience on game day and/or after particularly intense practices so they can actually get the sleep that their bodies need. It can also help with "mood" issues that result from the use of certain illegal performance-enhancing drugs like most steroids.

Long story short, not all pro players smoke weed just to have fun.

I've read "harsh" with regard to the punishment 3 times. And no one, NO ONE, went to Carl Spackler?

We need an Emma Watson GiF montage to cheer everyone up...I suck at GiF's.

I think Emma agrees.

Seriously, can you get any cuter than that? And no, a box full of kittens doesn't come close.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

It's a different kind of cute. I'd be concerned if a box of kittens had the same effect on me that Emma does.

I have a better chance of getting a box full of kittens. Enjoy what you can get

is this why you're willing to let God kill a whole box of kittens because of an Emma gif?

Someone left these box o kittens out in the woods in NE DC. I picked them up to save them, they have long since been adopted.

Thank God it's no longer illegal to get dome in the state of Virginia.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

I can't take Alexander's apology seriously. He didn't show how much battery life he had left.

Whether you think this needs to be a law or not is irrelevant to the situation. It is a law and against school policy, if you choose to break those rules and laws, you know there are consequences. The crime is not a big deal, but the consequences are. If you do choose to risk your enrollment in a major university and on a big time football team to smoke some weed, which Im sure thousands around the country do, don't do it in a matter you can get caught. Kids in college are gonna smoke, whatever, not the best idea but don't freaking put yourself in a situation to get caught. That's not that hard. For anyone who doesn't blame the players, and blames the law, that attitude is what is wrong with this country. Not every law is a good one, but you know when you get caught breaking it what the consequences are going to be. If you are in a school with as strict a policy as VT has when it comes to this, it is simply not worth it. These are two very good players who I'm sure are good kids as well, who will get it together and be fine, but this is a hard lesson to learn. Not a position anyone wants to be in.

Are we jumping the gun on this? This did not appear to happen on VT property, so no breaking of residential contract as far as being kicked out of school. And legally, nobody has been convicted of anything, just required to appear in court. If they are first time offenders and in court they request the first offenders program and sucessfully complete the requirements they are not considered convicted. I believe they basically hold off final judgement until your year of probation and program is completed. If you make it through without screwing up you go back to court and, I believe the charge becomes "dismissed". This was not caught through the NCAA random pee tests, so again, still just a legal accusation not a verdict. However, its the team rules that are the question. Will the team give them a second chance like the legal first offenders program, or automatically kick them off permanently because they were accused?
Just some random thoughts...

Sorry for the bump, but I've got some pretty good #Sauces that at least Adonis will be able to play this year. Haven't heard about Gaines, but I would assume it's the same for him.

I'm interested to see how Coach Fuente handles this kind of situation. I would expect at least a suspension for both players for the Liberty game but I don't have anything to base that off of.

10/10 would be stoked if this results in a 1 game (Liberty) suspension.

I'd put money on a 2-game suspension. Missing the Battle at Bristol would send quite a message.

While I 100% agree that missing the Battle at Bristol would send that message to everyone, I hope you are wrong.

If this is dropped to a misdemeanor, I would disagree with a suspension of any number of games.

Agree, but there will be this:

i'm fairly certain that simple possession of marijuana (not trafficking/sale etc.) is a misdemeanor in Virginia

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Downvoted because I made the mistake of replying above and all the yellow boxes for new comments disappeared and I had to scroll slowly down while looking at post dates to figure out where the new posts were only to find your flaming bag of dog poo post at the end of the breadcrumbs.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Thanks hokie07, I now know what "bumping a thread" means. I feel so smart when I figure something out. Then I realize that everyone else already knew and I feel dumb again. There must be balance in the force.

Today, in overanalyzing tweets:

sauce? reinstated?

Isn't Adonis the sauce here? That would make it the most:

We put the K in Kwality

No. The hearing is not until June 27.

Could have received very recent news about charges being dropped or something of the like.

I think it is more likely that people are reading WAY too much in to his tweet.

That doesn't seem to describe us at all. Can you site an example?

/s

We put the K in Kwality

No but I can cite several :D

I agree, breaking down cryptic tweets isn't a good source of information. I was merely suggesting a possibility that he received news about the situation in one way or another today, whether significant or not.

Doubt it, considering his court date isn't till later in June

A slight delay but it still looks like we'll hopefully know something soon.

Using /s is for cowards.

If we lived in Alabama, the DA would drop the charges as he doesn't want to tarnish the good kids who play football in hot weather.

Correction, they would have to play for Bama but commit the offense in Louisiana.

would think Fuente would suspend them liberty game and thats it

Hopefully, or he might go another direction and bring the hammer down since this is his first big disciplinary issue and he wants to make an example of them.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

I would classify weed and alcohol as a minor disciplinary issue in today's college life.. its not like they had stolen guns or broke into a house.

Hey, don't go bringing Cody Journell into this

Stolen guns don't get prosecuted if you play outside without AC!!

What makes you think there's AC in there? It's literally a $21 million barn.

Exactly. It's like I tell my 18 yr old son, it's not the weed or booze.............it's about being stupid.
PLEASE DON"T BE STUPID!

From my extensive testing of alcohol, I have found that it makes you more stupider, but makes you feel more smarterer. However, 2 beers before giving a class presentation was like a performance enhancing drug.

I have found the more others drink the funnier and better looking I become.

Can confirm. Almost failed an easy intro to sociology class because of alcohol. The class was in Surge, and I had a 2 hour break between classes around lunchtime before it. This was the same time that Bud Foster's was across the street, and I went there for lunch and a pint more than I should have. Moral of the story is, Guinness and learnin' don't mix.

If you play it, they will win.
