Given that he was listed as a 3rd string WR and has since moved to tailback (behind the existing guys), probably minimal. It sucks to not have a playmaker available, but it is what it is, and there were others ahead of him at either position.

He could become a major force in punt and kick-returns. Maybe more than minimal, but we don't know until they reveal the KR depth chart (currently blank on HokieSports).

Beamer said in an interview that Jarrett was on punt duties and Knowles was on kickoff returns. Don't know who the backups are, but those are his primaries right now.

Am I the only one that absolutely despises the two back punt return formation. Jarrett is a play make put him back there alone with one guy 10 yards in front for blocking purposes. Hated seeing Michael Holmes returning anything. Was too hesitant to be a returner

The 2 back punt return gave us Jarrett's huge return against Pitt. The problem is when someone other than Jarrett returned the punt. If Jarrett were to return every punt, that man back there gives the block on the first guy so there's no block in the back penalty and gives Jarrett room to make his move.

If I think about it as an opposing coach and not a VT fan, I'm telling my punter to kick it to the side of the field with "not Jarett," even if he is 10 yards closer to avoid Jarett having a big return.

The two back return alignment prevents teams from rugby kicking away from returners. The most important part of the punt return game is ensuring that your returner catches the ball. That seems simple and obvious, since fumbles are bad. But, it is also critical from a field position standpoint. Having people in position to make fair catches and preventing the ball from bouncing, over the full course of the season, will save 100's of yards in field position.

Hadn't really looked at it that way. I guess my biggest issue was who the second person was. Holmes didn't lose yards just never really seemed a threat for a big return

I thought Holmes was ok. He went straight up field on most runs, but that is 7-10 yards in extra field position each kick. NFL coaches would be thrilled to get that.
Two deep makes blocking punts more difficult, but the move to directional punting, shorter drops and getting kicks off quicker, and rugby style kicking has neutralized punt blocking. At the same time, it has also cost punters yardage on their kicks. Beamer is just being pragmatic, rather than putting Jarrett back there and then having the opposition kick low line drives that he can't field anyway and wasting him. See Jaron Hosley's last year as a punt returner.

Am I the only one that is upset that the kid cant avoid being suspended for the first game of his career. Not one person mentioned being upset about that in this entire post. How hard is it? Rhetorical question. You should follow team rules regardless of your "big man on campus status", especially if you are a freshman.

Even if they're trying to follow the rules, players sometimes slip up. A great example is David Wilson at the Orange Bowl a couple years ago. He was confused about a rule and thought he only needed to be in the hotel by curfew, not in his room and ended up missing at least a quarter, maybe even a half because of it. College kids do stupid stuff, act without thinking, over sleep, etc. all the time. From everything we've heard out of him, he's learned from it, is trying to put it behind him, etc. As long as he doesn't have recurring problems, I don't think it will be a big issue.

I agree with you. You would think he'd be able to follow team rules just like every one else. Don't know that he would play a role in Alabama game regardless but glad they are setting tone with players early on in their careers. For your actions there will be consequences unless you are at LSU or the SEC in general.

Re: Va Tech WR Joel Caleb Suspended for Alabama Game
"Hokie fan thinks their defense will shut down Tide running game and give them a chance to upset. Hokie fan thinks A. J. is a game manager only. Hokie fan thinks Tide OL and DL won't be good due to loosing starters from last year. Hokie fan never has really thought too.

Spelling would be a great additive here, but the site is funny to read anyway. Lumping all VT fans in as morons while forgetting to spell simple words correctly.

I was about to register on their site just to wish them well. Crossover on fan sites is sweet when you share a little respect. But their usernames are limited to too few letters. I could only be HorseOnATreadmi. So I bailed on it.
So if any of the tidefans show up over here, Welcome! Hope you guys have a good season, stay healthy, best of luck, and congrats on all your recent success! See y'all in Atlanta!

Most likely guilty as charged here. I catch myself making that mistake a lot, and I'm sure I've let a few slide before. Will subject myself to the wet noodle lashing by my wife.

I think he means blocking/beamerball, not as a return man, but I could be totally off.
We would need two kick returners and I could see him fitting in there, I think KR might also be a good way to get Chris Mangus on the field this year.
I do believe the return game is where Chris Mangus is best suited

I'm fine with someone being back there. Just out them in front. Jarrett should be the only one fielding the punt
RVD must ALWAYS be in front of Jarrett on punt returns.
So it has been written so it shall be.

Didn't see that interview. Thanks. I still think he has potential on returns, if he can't get into offensive series.
This is why we can't have the nice things in football.
I shrunk an inch when I heard that line after the Pittsburgh game.

That had to be written by a caveman, right? Perhaps we've stumbled upon "the missing link"?

They even enjoy your write ups French!
What is this "ignorance" in the comment section that they are referring too? I'm sure they NEVER have ignorant comments on their site...
Did we miss a TKP'er poisoning a tree?
I mean, I was gonna take a piss on the Saban statue while driving through Tuscaloosa, but we were already behind schedule.
I had to chuckle...the guy's talking about ignorance, and the next post, the guy admits to having to look up what the lollipop guild was....priceless.
This also made me chuckle. I guess having seen the Wizard of Oz doesn't qualify as cultured.

People not knowing the difference between loose, lose, loosing, and losing drives me fuckin crazy. And I see it on tkp a lot too.

Please refer to any LOLUva articles for a complete definition.

There's an edit feature just for that particular problem ;)
Remember last year when WVU loosed their bowel???
Lol.
I can't plus one this enough!
