Erick Green named First Team NBA Developmental League

I dont know whether to congratulate him or compare this to being the first team out of the tournament so often. Its like getting a one seed in the NIT. Hopefully some NBA squads take note and he finds a spot on a roster next season. If not, I would expect to see Green head back to Europe to earn a better paycheck. The NBA D League as of 2014 had a team salary cap of $173,000.00 with the max player total around $31,000 per year with top bonuses. Ten players per squad, bottom tier salary in 2014 was $13,000. Tough to take that kind of paycheck when you see mediocre players pulling down six figures or more in Europe.

I always liked him as player, hopefully he gets picked up or moves on to a European or Chinese league.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

How can the salary be $13,000? At a pay rate of $7.25 an hour, it only covers 45 weeks of work. I know the league is not a full year, but this seems borderline illegal. The article mentions they get housing accommodations and $40 per diem for meals, does the Dept of Labor count this toward compensation? I know the MLB got in hot water a few years ago for their Single A players essentially making less than the minimum wage once all of the mandatory hours were totaled up. Knowing this, I am surprised how many players leave early, seems like you would have it better in college (with the new stipends) than in the D-League.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Don't NFL practice squad players make at least 100k? That is outrageous.

No nice way of making it right but D League schedule starts beginning of October with preseason. It ends before the end of April, even with their version of the playoffs. That is only a seven month schedule or about a max of 30 weeks. Makes their pay about $10.83 an hour and it varies in terms of compensation regarding per diem and housing. Still pretty atrocious.
