Nickeil Alexander-Walker announced his commitment to Virginia Tech on Thursday.

Great day to be a Hokie!!!!!!!
— Nickeil Alexander (@TheReal_NAW1) May 5, 2016
The 6'5", 175 pound Ontario native is the Hokies' first verbal for the 2017 men's basketball recruiting cycle.
Alexander-Walker picked the Hokies over offers from Maryland and Southern Cal. In the past week, he made official visits to the Terrapins and then Hokies. According to HoopSeen.com, Tech assistant Jamie McNeilly played a prominent role in Alexander-Walker's recruitment.
"I have a very good relationship with Coach Jamie (McNeilly) and he will play a big role in my decision," Alexander-Walker told HoopSeen.com. "Coach Buzz (Williams) is a very animated person which is great to be around."
Alexander-Walker played his sophomore season at St. Louis Christian Academy (Mo.) before transferring to Tennessee's Hamilton Heights Christian Academy prior to his junior year. The highly-touted shooting guard is rated a 4-star by Rivals, Scout and 247Sports. All three services list him as a top-100 recruit nationally.

Maryland fans were certain he was a lock until he visited VT. Buzz is a mastermind. Welcome to Hokie Nation, Nickeil!
Any day that the Hokies can steal something from Maryland is a good day.
Well we don't need to steal any uniforms from them
I know i'm in the minority, but I friggin love those uniforms.
Yes, you are in the minority.
Color-blindness probably helps.
You're just behind the times then.
Barnum and Bailey is so yesterday.
Seriously... I love new uni looks but MD has some horrid combinations. HORRID!
I generally like all of what they have produced. I remember when they first busted it out, they had that helmet thing going where it was basically a variation of the Maryland flag! Not only did it look great, but how better to dominate yourself as THE school in the state by taking the flag and making it yours?! I mean, not that MD has any instate competition, but still...
Like their dignity in 2004 and 2005
Virginia Tech University
Ugh
EDIT: woops forgot to add the /s at the end of that. I mean really I could care less what the recruits call us.
srsly?

Actually, that's not a big deal.
Tyrod called it the University of Virginia Tech. (Of course, there are those who believe he was just messin' with us.)
We made the bed of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. We must also sleep in it.
Thinking back, I'm a little surprised we didn't go with Virginia A&M. (But I do think Virginia Tech sounds better.)
That was the first name wasnt it?
Virginia A&M College
Virginia A&M College and Polytechnic Institute
Virginia Polytechnic Institute
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Virginia Tech
Whew, glad we didn't stick with #2. What a mouth full. "Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute" Imagine seeing VAMCPI on our helmets.
And the announcers saying "Vah AMCPI"
Yeah, but I've only ever seen it abbreviated as VAMC, not Virginia A&M.
Yes its annoying but I really doubt this deserves a downvote. Please read the guidelines if and just use common sense people...

They can call us whatever they want, as long as they commit AND stay committed
The loyal spouse's creed.
Great start for 2017 recruiting!
Beauty, eh?
VT adding back bacon to menus as we speak
Not the Gwaltney or Smithfield kind.
Naw, we're saving the Smithfield kind for our first Chinese recruit.
Naw, just making a comment upon the ownership of one of our oldest food brands. I have many faults, and many shortcomings, but racism isn't one of them.
Good recruiting news from the Great White North? I like it, eh!

Also: this kid is a really good get for our first commit of this cycle. All aboard the hype train!
Hot damn!
I miss Jon Stewart *sad face*
Kid is silky smooth in and around the paint. Looks like a terrific finisher. Great addition and happy he is a Hokie!
Keith Wilkes-ish
Impressive game. Smooth stroke great passing good size. Great get!
Have you seen my beaver?
I wish I saw her beaver.
Did he commit to Maryland?
Just ask his initials...

News is going to get better. Hang on, guys.
If you're talking about Markell Johnson then you get all the legs. And bourbon too just because.
More... more... more!!!
Yes, yes it is!
Still holding... How long should I hold on for? Or can I go to bed?
Edit 19 hours and 58 minutes later: I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm still holding.
If the news you were waiting for was on Markell Johnson than it may be awhile. He tweeted this afternoon that he may not reclassify from the class of 2017. His tweets make it sound like he is on an emotional roller coaster right now. Nothing new out on Evan Maxwell yet either.
Ohio State fans right now:
Ohio St. radio show accusing of VT/Buzz of shady dealings in regards to Markell Johnson...
http://247sports.com/Article/BM5-Will-Oklahoma-be-a-night-game-Markell-J...
Starts at about 5:30 in the clip.
Dear Bucknut Radio....
They get top-notch recruits all the time, but when someone else gets a good recruit, they're like:
Perfect response.
They're certainly looking at things through heavily-tinted scarlet & gray glasses, that's for sure.
LOL they like can't comprehend how we could possibly beat them for a recruit.
Duh. Buzzketball.
1) Trevor Thompson left because Buzz didn't want him here, not because OSU was a better program.
2) ACC Basketball > Big 10 Basketball and it's not even close
3) Ohio State won one more game than Virginia Tech last year but they had the #2 overall pick in the draft on their roster and we had freshman and bunch of castoffs from other programs (EDIT: My bad, D'Angelo Russell got drafted in 2015. The thrust of the point remains the same, we had the same exact amount of success this year as Ohio State in a more difficult conference with less heralded recruits).
4) Buzz Williams has historically produced better results compared to Thad Matta if you normalize for the talent they were given.
5) How dare they accuse VT of shady dealings when we haven't had any major recruiting violations in any sport since Frank Beamer was hired and the school that's accusing us has a rampant history of cheating in the past
6) Marquette's rich alumni were worried that Buzz Williams was the wrong coach for Marquette because he doesn't cheat.
7) We have one of the best AD/Presidents in the country and you hire douchebags like Gordon Gee. (EDIT: This is actually a non sequitur but I like taking cheap shots at Gordon Gee so I put it in).
are you sure about that? How many times has the ACC won the ACC-B1G challenge in the last 5 years? And what have those scores been?
I thought it was a consensus that regular season in college basketball doesn't matter.
via GIPHY
Well, the ACC had 6 teams in the Sweet 16 compared to the B1G's 3, two Elite Eight games were all ACC teams, and a Final Four Game was two ACC teams. Plus 2 of the B1G teams in the Sweet 16 were eliminated by ACC teams. Add in the fact that no B1G teams made it past the Sweet 16 and their so-called juggernaut was eliminated by a 15 seed in the first round.
And you can't really judge it off the ACC-B1G challenge because 1) The ACC-B1G is extremely early in the season 2) The ACC has added Louisville, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Notre Dame in the past 5 years while only losing the Twerps to the B1G.
So yeah a few years ago, you could say the B1G was better, but the ACC has surpassed them easily and it's not relatively close anymore.
5) I'd agree that our major sports have seemed pretty clean while OSU seemingly has had some questionable dealings, but wasn't the Oliver Weiss era of men's soccer pretty sketchy?
Don't question me with facts.
via GIPHY
Yeah, I now hope we get them in the ACC-B1G Challenge. That way they can see how much our "Ole Miss stuff going on" is paying off.
From our Hoops Whiz below:
You might get your wish.

incredible. makes me wish we get Markell Johnson AND prove the allegations concerning Buzz Williams aren't true
They assumed they were a shoo in because if the rumors are true, it was the Ohio State coaching staff that convinced Markell to reclassify and pursue his opportunities in this class. They then thought it must be a done deal when he did decide to follow their advice. Its not like Ohio State has been trending up with Thad Matta at the helm. They finished seventh in the Big Ten compared to our finishing seventh in the ACC. They won 11 conference games to our 10. They did it with a roster very similar to ours in terms of youth playing heavily but it was also the third year in a row their win total had declined. They had multiple transfers leave the program this year, mostly citing the coaching staff as the reason, not playing time. Those transfers leaving could prevent them from making a step forward this year while Buzz and his bunch seem poised to make a leap forward even with the transfers that have left the program.
Thad Matta has also not been able to close on top talent
HERE
So finding out that Matta and staff were unable to close the deal with Markell Johnson if it indeed proves to be true shouldnt really be much of a surprise to Buckeye fans.
Adding a guard like Johnson would be a great get for Tech, now it would be all the sweeter to twist it in the ribs of OSU while we do it.
Rob:
In that Bucknuts radio recording the guy said:
What the heck is that? Anything you can share? He mentioned a Boardinghouse source.
hes basically saying we must have paid him off for him to come here.
and here is his source..
Question the integrity of Buzz Williams at your own peril.
I have to think he is pointing to the information that came out around the NFL draft regarding Larry Tunsil at Ole Miss receiving improper benefits. The news around the draft was that even though Ole Miss had already been hit for him receiving improper benefits concerning a dealership and loaner cars, that it may have gone much deeper in his stepfather taking cash from a coach and other details regarding his recruitment. As for Boardinghouse, I suspect its a basketball fan forum although I am not a member so not specifically sure what the discussion there is.
If they read the recently released Hokie Scholarship Fund report...they would see we clearly don't have money for illegal recruiting!
Lol, yeah we have a scholarship fund deficit approaching and we need to raise money in order to cover the full COA, yet we somehow have plenty of money lying around to pay kids off. Plus, I'm sure OSU has never paid an athlete under the table for their commitment. I just love how the first excuse fans of pretty much any school have when a big recruit spurns them is "they must have been paid off." Like many a Buckeye I have encountered, it's hard for them to accept the reality that Ohio is not the center of the universe for everyone.

Special Agent Dale Cooper :)
Oh good, an excuse to post this:
I've been following news on this religiously. SO. EXCITED.
Was super disappointed that they pushed it back to 2017. Also, don't know how they can justify not bringing back Heather Graham.
Good god Heather Graham is so qualified for her job.

I don't know if she can act, but she's so gorgeous.

need to add Markell now...
I think the guy in your .gif is my new spirit animal.
you telling me you don't know the great DJ Khaled?!?
Best part about him is his real name is Khaled Khaled. He also went to high school with Joey Fatone.
Always appreciated the irony that the huskiest member of nsync had a last name of 'Fat One'
I LOVE UNEXPECTED GOOD NEWS
Might just be because he's really skinny, but his wingspan looks absolutely absurd for a guard. Can't wait to see him in maroon.
Don't you mean "in Mulberry"?
Add Harden and Johnson and our backcourt is looking good (and long) for quite a while
He's bringing back short shorts

First thing I noticed and I loved it.
Dan Issel and Artis Gilmore!
So this is what it feels like when a blue chip prospect selects us.
Not going to lie, I like this better.
But can he play football?
He'll start at TE then move to OT.
Blue chip? This is what it feels like? Again I take issue with this thinking in relation to bball recruiting. Blue chip usually means one and done and outside of blue blood programs it usually doesn't really equal championships or even success (see LSU). And this guy isn't a blue chip at least to my understanding of "blue chip". He's 4 star ranked around 75 overall, 1 nationally in Canada. That's a lower ranking than Clarke and Hill, it's more around Bibbs ranking. He could rise but not to top 25. This is a great recruit and a great job by Buzz and Co. that continues our level of recruiting success.
I just got it from the thread title.
fwiw rivals said in their next ranking updates he'll be up near if not in the top 50. apparently has been great on the national circuit recently.
Are we seriously picking nits on whether or not this kid is a good or great get?
This is why we can't have nice things
This is the kind of player who turns a good program into a great one. This is the kind of player who raises the floor because if you can keep bringing them in like Buzz is doing, they will be very good by the time they are juniors and seniors making for a team deep in talent that can come at you in waves. They are the kind of long term blue chippers Buzz has been stockpiling since he got here. Once these kids start rolling into upperclassmen age look out.
While I trust Buzz's eye for talent and think Alexander-Walker will be a really good player, it's not like being a top 100 guy means you're destined for stardom.
There's lots of guys in the top 100 who don't pan out to be the players a fanbase thought they might be upon signing - for example, VCU just announced that Michael Gilmore was transferring. He was a top 100 recruit too, but he struggled to stay in the rotation at VCU and now he's heading elsewhere to find more playing time.
Of course, and being a 5* Top 10 player doesn't mean it, either.... But if you're stockpiling 2 or 3 of these kinds of kids a year, like Buzz is doing, that's where it truly becomes the situation like I described above. At that point, you're not relying on individual kids to be stars, but rather you're developing a talented team, and if you can get the result to be greater than the sum of its parts, well then you've got a really great thing going.
I don't disagree with that narrative at all. I just think we should be cautious in making statements like this:
These are still 17-18 year old kids, after all.
If that's the mindset, then why care who commits? Why care about recruiting at all? In fact, why have a dedicated forum to collegiate sports where we openly discuss college aged athletes?
Good grief, I've seen wet blankets before, but my goodness.
Never mind then. Personally, I think we just spend too much time worrying about recruiting.
But I get it. Keep on keepin on.
This! 1000%
He doesn't have to get taller, or quicker, or become a better shooter, or even a better ball handler to succeed on the court. If he eats right, works out, and keeps his head on straight...all things within his control...he can be a very, very good college player. Whatever color chip that is, I'll take it every time.
If only I had a Nickeil for every time that happened...

Wait to you get old, you will be a millionaire by then.
What a boost for the program! Nice momentum here!
In the first video, that drive at 1:00, wow.
I have such confidence in Buzz (and his staff!) as a recruiter. I'm hopeful that I will get that way for football too (although feeling pretty burned by Crosby).
Kid didn't want to play for a school in his own province or even his own country?! don't know if i like this kid's loyalty and comittment...
/s
I just hope Buzz is still here when he gets here.
via GIPHY
Great looking recruit. Good outside shooter (based on what he showed in films!). passer and driver.
The real question: Is Buzz staying? Has all the talk of him possibly leaving gone? Facts not rumors...
Markell Johnson said on his twitter that his reclassification to a 2016 recruit is not official yet, still seems to be unsure what his plans are.
UNC-A transfer Dylan Smith, a 6'5" guard is currently on campus for a visit. I assume he would have to sit out one season if we signed him.
He looks fundamental which is what Buzz needs for his guys. He will need to bulk up a lot to handle the physical ACC play (especially on defense). He is 6'5" but doesn't attack the rim on his drives in the parts I watched but he does use his body to shield out defenders. He is young and will fill out when he gets on campus but that may limit his effectiveness early in his career. He is another block for Buzz to build with and that is what we need long term.
So ESPN finally updated their rankings, and NAW is the 34th overall player in the country (1st in Canada.) If he continues to impress and has a big summer, he could possibly approach five star territory and also potentially be a McDonald's All American.
Rivals bumped him from 91st nationally to 52nd.
