If you're gonna come after Emma, you need to bring it with more than just papers

Actually, it's mistake....it's not Emma but Sofia:

I would do that too if I had enough money.

Rip his freaking head off!

Edit: Wrong post for thread. I presumed it was about manure being flung on her and a few activists. My bad.

I think she should bring that money back and donate it to the Hokie Club!

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

So what.
Despite all the hullabaloo, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this.

Go Emma, manage your own life and let everyone else do as they wish as well.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Rich people have an obligation to try and skirt tax laws.

/s

That said, if I'm reading this right, her offshore account was in the BVIs, and she says she wasn't using it to evade taxes.

In the U.S., there are many ways other than offshore accounts used to evade taxes. Like setting up a charity or a foundation.

Like:
The HokieFireman Fund for Travel.

It's a great charity, I help a lucky person with season tickets and travel to Hokie Home Games. With enough money that person can even travel to away games.

Just because some people use it for that, does not mean all people use it for that.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Actually, pretty much all of the Panama Papers stuff was tax avoidance, as would be the other methods you mentioned. Tax avoidance is perfectly legal, and is done well within the letter of the law (even though it blatantly violates the spirit of the law). Tax law is rather convoluted, but it would be much simpler if people would just use the correct words.

But you're right, Emma's accounts were set up in a British protectorate, where taxes would still be paid. The stated reasoning is the degree of privacy afforded account holders in the BVI that is not available in Britain itself. She didn't want screwballs messing with accounts with her name on them, so she park her money where it didn't openly list her name.

Yup.

Who wants to fly in a private plane anyway?

The Dude Abides

Agreed, I read the article. It is legal to own an offshore account for everybody as long as you declare your income, etc.

Hate the game, not the player.

Always choose joy.

Problem is, the players MAKE the game rules, and then expect us not to hate them.

I'd still give her a chance if she wants what I'm dishing

Kinda OT, but where did the Emma Watson fascination come from? Don't get me wrong, she is definitely easy on the eyes, but imo I can think of many more women who I would consider better looking than her.

wow photoshop is amazing. She looks almost real

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

She IS almost real.

1. She is talented, articulate, educated, and gorgeous.
2. There is an Emma Watson GIF that is appropriate for any situation.

The combination of these two (in addition to an organic component where TKPers simply used Emma GIFs a lot) led to her being a favorite amongst this community.

Have you watched We Are The Millers? I would put a gif but it's slightly NSFW. Regardless, it's proof that she has some weird gene where she never ages a day and looks just as good now as she did 20 years ago on Friends.

ok now. Just 'cause we all know this is an emma thread, it doesn't mean my boss walking behind me would understand. Let's try to keep things at least a little SFW.

Not everyone in here is still a student like yourself (if I remember correctly). Please act accordingly.

If by student, you mean student of life, then you're absolutely 100% correct. Btw, posted this while at work AND, there are already workplaces that Nazi & Commie-block this site regardless. I get your point, but damn, never thought I'd see the day where an Emma gif/pic gets downlegged on TKP. Now I've seen errythang.

Ahhh shiiiiiiiit thought I had read recently you were still at Tech.

And yeah, some businesses are far more strict than others.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

probably doesn't help that the pic is very obviously photo-shopped and clearly isn't Emma. I wouldn't count this as a true Emma gif/pic and therefore you still have not seen a real Emma gif/pic downvoted on TKP. Hope this helps.

Onward and upward

Well if you're using that logic, then I could flip that into the fact that it's her face and there's a pole and she's smoking hot MAKES it an Emma Watson pic/gif.

you're twisted mate

Onward and upward

Might even call him "bent".

Actually, if you check the pic, I'm neither the one that is twisted or bent.

Neither is Emma, because that clearly isn't her.

The face is obviously hers, the bod is hot, and she's held that exact position on a pole that pretty much fits the description. Works for me.

Now I've seen errythang.

so much easier things to denigrate about ... like the generation who loves her, loves teenage mutant ninja turtles and flat bill hats with the stickers still on them.

eric

"My advice to you... is to start drinking heavily."-John Blutarsky

I understand going after the hats, but TMNT goes back much further than that and is totally awesome! I loved it back in the late 80s/early 90s and have lots of the toys, including the turtle van, the turtle blimp, and the technodrome stored in the loft of my dad's storage/workshop building to prove it.

1. Talented - not sure if Emma was "flexing her acting muscle" when she played Hermoine
2. Educated - Not all that unique. Shakira is a MENSA member, Natalie Portman went to Yale/Harvard or something like that
3. yes, she's gorgeous, so lets keep these gif's coming!

I never said she was unique. She's also been in a bunch of other movies that are worth watching.

The real genesis of the TKP <3 Emma thing was that people just started using GIFs of her a lot. There's likely a reason for it, but using Emma GIFS simply became a bit of an in-house meme.

2. Educated - Not all that unique. Shakira is a MENSA member, Natalie Portman went to Yale/Harvard or something like that

I'm pretty sure she went to Brown University, another Ivy League school or something like that

Emma did matriculate at Brown. Ivy League.

She was a well known thesbian.
And it is well documented that she matriculated.

That's why we love her.

"Basically it ALL started with this"

Yeah, that's what got me started. I don't know Harry Potter, but I remember working in bars in the 80's, and she takes this old boy... right...back...where I would love to be.

Thank you Emma. And thanks to the good folks at gif central for making it happen.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

ok, so apparently we've reached the point in her career where people just irrationally hate her because she's popular

cool, got it. Thanks for pointing that out

She's gone full JLaw.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Well... not full JLaw... She'd have to have her phone hacked before that happens.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

She'd also have to be a much better actress. JLaw has an Oscar (nominated four times), 3 Golden Globes (for four nominations), 1 BAFTA (2 noms), and 2 SAGs (of 5). The best Emma has done professionally has been a few teen choice awards, only one of which was as an individual, and MTV Movie Awards.

Emma has a BAFTA and 2 Peoples choice awards.

It was a Brittania Award, given in a year in which she only played a minor role in a single film. And one of those PCA's was for best ensemble. And while those are certainly nice, they pale in comparison to the accolades received by JLaw. Emma Watson does great things, but if we're being objective, she's a middling actress at best. Doesn't mean we love her any less.

I'm just not a big JLaw fan. Course I don't watch alot of movies.

Emma vs. JLaw, the new cake vs. pie here on TKP.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

This competition needs to be handled seriously and thoroughly.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

Love Emma Watson, but until she puts out a performance on par with JLaw's Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook or her role in American Hustle, that's not much of an argument from a purely acting perspective.

Emma does do a great job in TPoBaW, but not on that level.

Yeah but we have some cookie and ice cream proponents as well. In the competition of Emma vs. JLaw, I choose Aniston.

I don't care what you say, Emma has 2 golden globes.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Emma has spent much of the last decade in Harry Potter movies (which won't typically win her any awards). Award wins and nominations are questionable (Silver Linings Playbook was her clear winner, but the other nominations I don't think were anything spectacular). Some years, the half the field is more worthy of an oscar win than winners in other years. For example, for best picture:

1995
Forrest Gump
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Pulp Fiction
Quiz Show
The Shawshank Redemption
(Lion King also came out that year but didn't get nominated for best picture for some head scratching reason)

2002
Chicago
Gangs of New York
The Hours
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Pianist

In my opinion the Oscars usually get the nominees right, but not always the winner. That's just me though. Sometimes there is a clear cut winner though, like JLaw in SLP. That said, some years the Academy favors its golden boys a little strongly. I think Bradley Cooper's performance in SLP portraying someone with manic bipolar disorder (which was extremely praised among the actual bipolar and mental health community) should have easily won the Oscar over fantastic actor, Daniel Day Lewis, but whose role as Lincoln was essentially just a string of anecdotes in a weird accent. The role didn't require much of his talent and he didn't even have the best performance of the movie (Tommy Lee Jones).

I kind of agree with your point but respectfully disagree with your example. DDL absolutely deserved the oscar and did a great job portraying a well known figure in history in a more complex manner. What I do not like is the thought process that you have to play someone with some sort of debilitation in order to win an Oscar, which seems to be prevalent. The guy who played Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything was great, but was he better than Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game? I don't think so, but I think he was given the nod because he played an individual (and did a great job don't get me wrong) suffering from a debilitation.

That's just my $0.02

Yeah we'll just have to agree to disagree on the first one but I think you extrapolated something from my point that I didn't say. I don't think you have to play someone with a sort of debilitation at all, but to me, the role of Pat Solitano in SLP required significantly more range to execute properly and in such a brilliant fashion. I did not think the Lincoln role stretched DDL (I think he did a good job, though), I think it was no where close to his role in There Will Be Blood, for example.

I totally agree that Benedict Cumberbatch was better in The Imitation Game than Redmayne in TToE, and also that TIG was a better movie. Which once again would support my notion that the nominees are usually right, but in my opinion, not always the winner.

I didn't extrapolate. I personally think its a commonly held belief among the academy (not necessarily by you).

I'm glad we're on the same page on the nominees, though it's easier to pick 4-6 great performances than the ABSOLUTE best one.

I realized after I had responded that I had misread what you said originally but didn't know how to go back and edit it enough to change my response, that's on me. I do think that outside stuff often comes into play like that though. The sociocultural climate tends to affect the results as well. For example, several of the voting members of the Academy admitted to voting for 12 Years a Slave without actually watching the movie... but it was a great movie so no harm I guess.

And yes, I don't necessarily fault them for not getting the winners right (IMO) because getting the 4-6 is the more objective part of the process. Those are generally, objectively by most critics/viewers, the best 4-6 nominees in that category. Too much subjectivity and bias goes into the final selection and that's just a natural function of how we are as humans.

Or perhaps Michael Keaton in Birdman?

JLaw has also maintained significant roles in TWO franchises, in addition to her meatier roles. She's got fantastic range. And have you seen the movies besides Harry Potter that Emma's been in? Not exactly challenging roles. I'm not saying awards are a perfect measure, but it was a simple way to quantify a distinct gap between the quality in their acting.

OK, I love Emma Watson, but JLaw is brilliant on the screen. She has a commanding presence that you rarely see, and she's been able to repeat that in a range of films.

I've gotten more amusement out of the videos in this thread than anything I can remember. Guess the conversion from innocence to sizzling hot holds a fascination with a lot of people, regardless of how many awards one may or may not win in the process. It's all good :--)

Look what just dropped today...
