Top Ten Big Hitters for the off season blues

From VT Athletics. I had forgotten about Chris Ellis! Willie Pyle should have made the list, IMO. Anyone else? Hey Emma is cute but this is cuter.

Enjoy the history!

That is a terrifying legacy of dream-wreckers.

"Stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!" - William Addison Caldwell, 1872

I was watching it and thinking that 80% of the hits in those clips were illegal today due to rule changes.

Was fun at the time, but knowing what we know now about CTE, takes a bit of the fun out of it.

The Dude Abides

Nope, not me.

I had 4 concussion from high school sports. 3 in soccer and my worst one in football. Helmet came off took a helmet to the side of the head, knocked out cold. Sat out three days went back to practice. There is no doubt in my mind that my memory was effected in some way. I am starting to really notice it as I get older and try to remember my past. My family will sit around on holidays sharing old stories about things we used to do and I sit there silent, wondering why the hell can't I remember any of this stuff. When comes to the brain you just never know but everyone is wired differently as well.

I've had at least three concussions, the last from playing pickup basketball. The week after while suffering from post-concussion syndrome was one of the worst weeks of my life. On top of depression (never had it before or since) and moodiness, I just felt dumb. I couldn't do anything but administrative work because I couldn't handle complex thoughts or hold anything in my head for more than a few seconds. I'm terrified that this will cause similar problems for me as I age.

I think my favorite part is that just about each contender had some big hits against LOLUVA

Onward and upward

Man the crazy part for me was how many of these hits from the LB's and DB's would have been called "targeting" today.

Using /s is for cowards.

Awesome stuff, thank you

First, Adibi and Hall should have been separated and I always though Hall was the harder hitter. Also how could they skip Hall's hit on that Louisville QB? So many big hits in this one. Funny that Hall and Adibi were two of the best to wear the O&M, but James Anderson was the only member of that LB corps to have an NFL career.

Brandon Flowers - No clip from the hit on the Kent State WR? Kam is great choice for #1 on this list, but I think pound-for-pound Flowers was the hardest hitter.

Its even got its own video!

Some of this feels like an all name team, glad to see Ben Taylor get on the list, guy did not shy away from contact. The case could be made for Logan Thomas to be on this list as well.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

5+ yards to go? Third and long.

5 or fewer? Third and Logan.

Man, people gave him so much crap for the losses and poor offensive performances at the time, but I really miss that guy. He was basically our entire offense. Once he got moving it was like trying to tackle a freight train. It would have been awesome to see what Coach Fu could do with him for four years. All the talent in the world.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Somewhere in an alternate universe, Logan Thomas is a probowl tight end.

And Bucky as an All American QB

My guess is that VT didn't want to post any of the really violent hits. Hits like Kyshoen's against Pitt, or a couple of Cam's where he may have knocked someone out for a moment.

They included Flowers' hit on the FSU QB, they cut away before the QB stood up, then dropped back down. Still remember that one like it was yesterday

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Still remember that one like it was yesterday

I don't think he does, though.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I was at that game, loudest crack of shoulder pads I've ever heard.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

That game was is probably one of my favorite that I have ever been to (I've been going to games since 2004).

First, Adibi and Hall should NEVER be separated. Ever. Second, while Mr. Anderson had the longest career, Adibi was with the Texans and da Bears for awhile. Third, I agree with you and the previous post about LT3 and Jarrett.

That Flowers hit on the Clemson WR screen was one I was waiting for when I saw he was on the list. Agree with everyone else, Logandozer should have been on here for a few hits he laid on folks

There are multiple highlight videos of big hits from that one game. Super loaded defense.

Yeah I seem to recall Macho nailing some poor WR on another screen at some point in that game. I found an image claiming to be that hit. Nasty stuff:

He broke Jacoby Ford's shoulder pads and he did not return to the game. Crushed.

In the other angle of that hit, you see where the Clemson player's leg whip upward from the hit and catch Flowers right between the legs, hence why he starts to celebrate and then decides to lay down for a sec. I still think the WR got it worse.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

How the hell is Logan Thomas not on this list? I can think of at least 5 hard hits off the top of my head now.

I know they were an FCS school at the time, but beating a 3-time national champion (05, 06, 07) program 66-13 is always a good feeling.

Especially considering they beat Michigan as an FCS school.

The best part is when the Appy State guy slams his shoe on the ground.

The best part. The backer that gets trucked ends up with Logan's size 15 and throws it on the turf!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

I think Darren Evans did it better though to that poor kid at Maryland.

The Dude Abides

Yes. Yes he did. That was a thing of beauty.

Correy

I seem to remember Aaron Rouse and Eric Green laying some vicious hits. I agree Willie Pyle as well as Pierson Prioleau each had their fair share.

Anyone remember Wayne Ward's hit at Syracuse in '99? It earned him the nickname Wayne "Hospital" Ward.

Or Ward's block on the punt return against WVU in 2000? Brutal.

That might be the one I'm thinking of actually. Things run together in my memory now. I remember it was a vicious hit, sent the poor kid into orbit.

I didn't watch much in '99 so I'm not sure. My memory tends to do the same though. I call it the Jim Beam effect.

The quality of this is poor, but the block is insane (and the crowd reaction awesome)...

I wonder if the fans were more excited about the block or the touchdown.

The block. It took everyone a few to realize that Davis scored.

Dustin Pickle should be on this list.

Logan really should have been an honorable mention here.

Zach Luckett, of 2007 FSU 2 pt conversion fame, was a monster on coverage teams. Regularly picked up guys and slammed them.

Luckett was a ST beast. He was one of our better gunners.

Correy

I had a bunch of classes with Zach and he was the goofiest happy go lucky kid I've ever been around. I couldn't even recognize the guy on the field, morphed into a beast!

Aaron Rouse and Noland Burchette are needed on this list. It skews a little to the high profile side.

Oh man, that Rouse hit on the Wake Forest kid? I was in the stands that night, I honestly thought he broke the kids neck.

Much enjoyed.
Great to see Ben Taylor get his due. I watched that Temple game with my dad and he was shaking his head at the licks Taylor was giving.
Cornell Brown's legs must be oaks...you can see the leg drive on his hits.
And Moore had Dadi's speed, but had that knack of taking the right angle...what a player.

Honorable mention candidate: George 'snot bubbles' Delricco.

Two observations.

Cody Grimm should get a HM.

Not a single play in the video had anyone wearing the "retro" shoulder stripes.

Speaking of honorable mentions - How could anyone forget the punters!!

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

I had been waiting on this one from Hughes. Where is LTs smack down on Mc Leod of LOLUVA during the D Wilson run?

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

He had a couple of good hits in that game. Didn't he have a big hit on TD that was called back for holding. Then there was one where he knocked over a LB of theirs as well.

Correy

Love how the Hughes pose over the 03 Miami fake FG is now just part of Hughes Punter Swag

I'm beginning to wonder if my Photoshop skills were too good on that one...

Jimmy Williams comes to mind, wish he'd given the ref a little more in the Louisville game to warrant the ejection.
