Question: Support other ACC teams in out of conference games?

You can very easily make a case for either side.

A) Yes - It's good for the ACC's overall reputation to win high profile out of conference games. #goACC

B) No - I don't want to see Clemson win under any set of circumstances.

No, just cheer for your own team. The whole SEC SEC SEC thing annoys the hell out of me. The fact that Tennessee fans take pride in Alabama winning championships is just weird. That said, I suppose if an ACC team is beating an SEC team I would be cheering for them #goacc

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

I want ACC teams to be undefeated when we upset their season, so yes.
Plus we get a nice bump in the BCS computer strength of schedule rankings.

I'll drink to that

I go for all ACC teams except LOLUVA and Clemsux. I just always want them to lose. LOL

@AMB4VT

Depends on the team - I really have no strong feelings towards Clemson either way, so sure, win away.

I guess if I did a breakdown,it'd be like this:
Coastal:
VT - Win them all (obviously)
Duke - sure, why not win? I'll root for you, just because you guys lose so often I feel bad sometimes...
UVA - I want them to lose every game ever. I want Cavman to fall off his horse every time he rides onto that field. I want every recruit in the country to know we are a better choice than them
GT - I hate Paul Johnson, and want him fired, so lose. If he moved on, I think I'd want them to win. If they play an SEC team, I think my dislike for the SEC will overcome my dislike for Paul Johnson.
Miami - I want them to either be winless, or undefeated when we play them (just so we can send them back to earth in flames and get credit for beating a wildly overrated opponent). So, win, I guess. But it's a complicated relationship for me.
UNC - meh. Win I guess, if only for our SOS
Pitt - no real opinion here. I'll probably develop one over the next few years, but right now I'd pull for them over some random Big 12 team or something...

Atlantic:
NCSt - Sure, I'd root for them. I've got a bunch of Wolfpack friends where I work, and have no hard feelings towards them.
BC - it'd be nice to see our doormat beat someone, so sure. #goacc. I guess their chronic ineptitude has gotten me over the whole Matt Ryan debacle (well that, and kicking the tar out of him in the ACC title)
Clemson - I don't really have any hard feelings towards Clemson. Sure, they beat us, but they got their asses handed to them in the bowl game, so whatever. #goacc
FSU - FSU usually gets the other major contenders, so I root for them in OOC because I know they will slip up somewhere in conference/will have to get through us in the title game to go to a championship. It's not an enthusiastic support, but I root for them none-the-less. #goacc
Syracuse - see Pitt
UMD - suck on it and die, terps. Have been actively anti-UMD after the way they ran out the Fridge and hired Edsall. leaving the conference hasn't helped either.
WF - No reason not to root for them. #goacc

so yeah, I'm pro-ACC with a few exceptions.

It was a catch

Pro-ACC for everyone except LOLUVA. they can lose every single game they play. and i hope that "partial member" notre dame loses every game they play

all maroon everything

I share your sentiments. I go with choice "A) Yes - It's good for the ACC's overall reputation to win high profile out of conference games. #goACC". It looks better when we beat them. Exceptions are LOLUVA for in state supremacy/recruiting reasons and ND for skirting around the system in a half conference half independent situation (and acting like their shit don't stink).

VT '10 #AllMaroonEverything

i'm usually a #goacc guy but i learned something when uva played auburn. i went into that game saying, "ok i'll pull for uva, good for the conference and football in the commonwealth in general." then i saw a shot of hoo frat boys with their shirts and ties and white hats that look all worn but you know they bought them that way and i was like, "fuck that shit, war eagle!"

so yeah typically will root for acc, but not uva.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

I was at that game as well.. and, of course, I was wearing my Virginia tech apparel. Not as a form of disrespect (we did smash them 38-0 a few weeks prior) but because 70 percent of the time I'm only wearing hokies gear. Anyway... had a few people try to put their hands on me, yelled at by a few drunk lady (and I use the term lady lightly) wahoos and hard more than my fair share of snide comments...

I will never...EVER...root for loluva.

I used to do event security (those RMC people in the yellow shirts) and I worked the UVA vs. USC game (silver lining: didnt have to watch VT lose to ECU that day).
sidenote: Scott Stadium is extremely strict on its rules about bringing in outside food or drink because they want people to be buying that stuff in-stadium.
Anyways, I'm checking bags at the gate and this older couple in their mid-60's comes to get their bag checked and head in to the game. I open it up and find a plethora of sandwiches, snacks, and drinks, and immediately feel kind of sad because I have to tell this seemingly sweet old couple that they can't bring this stuff in.
After I say "sir and madam, I'm very sorry you can't bring these items into the stadium," the old man looks me dead into the eye and says "f*** your mother."
As they get turned away at my gate to make the long trek back to their car just as the game was starting, I smirked and said "go Hokies"

Conversely, when I worked the VT Maryland Thursday night game that D-Evans went off in, an extremely drunk Maryland fan was giving me a hard time in line. 3 pretty big Hokie guys surrounded him and effectively shut his ass up, then winked at me. I wanted to immediately buy those guys a hundred rails.

Sorry for storytime, everyone. This insomnia is killing me!

I used to not root against UVA too much. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that my Dad is a UVA fan. Thank goodness he was too concerned with raising me to hate the Cowboys and Yankees to teach me anything about college sports. And yes, I hate UVA fans when it comes to discussing football, but to be honest I really didnt hold any ill will toward any of their programs at all. (SORRY DONT KILL ME)

My hole mindset changed during the UVA game last year.

The tailgate I usually go to on game day is in the Prices Fork lot right by the parking garage. Thats a public lot and anyone can come in on game day and pay to park there. There are usually quite a few tailgates in that lot being run by whoever we may be playing that day. So, of course, as I walk up to my tailgate I walk by a nicely set up UVA tailgate. They all looked to be having a good time and I didnt think anything of it.

When it came time to start the walk to Lane I had to walk back by this UVA tailgate. Well, at this point they were all lining the sidewalk taunting every single Hokie that walked by. Let me state how I feel on this, if you are year in and year out getting whipped by your rival and then decide to come to their home and tailgate, the LAST thing you should be doing is taunting people.. Let me also state that they werent simply saying GO HOOS or VT SUCKS, they were cussing and in your face with everything.

Well I had been enjoying my own tailgate and was feeling pretty good, so I decided that when I walked through I just wouldnt put my head down. I walked by the first UVA guy and he got in my face and said something so I proceeded to use a certain finger to let him know what I thought of his team. He didnt like that, and fair enough neither would I. But the tipping point came right after, he grabbed the back of my jacket and would not let go. After a few more tense words he finally let me go and I continued to walk through. Once I got out of that tailgate an older UVA gentleman who was obviously with the group, but not partaking in this taunting exercise, proceeded to tell me to watch my language. I believe my response didnt please him.

Look, Ill admit that I probably didnt act in the best way possible, and maybe I should have just walked around their tailgate in the first place instead of using the sidewalk. But, I just thought that whole situation was a bunch of BS.

I will never even slightly pull for them again after all of that. UVA talks so much about having class but I didnt see it that day.

LOLUVA and UMD are the only schools I actively root against. The first is obvious, the latter is because I'm from Maryland and have had the displeasure of going to Maryland games. The fans that are there are straight douchebags. They think home field advantage means mock the other team over rooting for their own (but they don't really have much to root for). Plus, my brother went there and for some reason thinks they'll win 8 games this year.

Rip his freaking head off!

It's simple: the better the conference looks, the better we look.

#ENFUENTE #BALLSOFSTEEL #Livefor32

I always root for the conference. Even UVA...the 38-0 bro win was much more satisfying than beating their usual 7-5 squad.

Always want ACC to do well especially in the bowl games. Sorry I loved it when Clemson beat LSU.

Totally valid. I enjoyed it as well. I'm tired of hearing so much about how garbage the ACC is.

In bowl games, I would like all ACC teams to win but I don't care. Mostly because it's the last game of the season and it doesn't affect us. During the year, as it has been said before, I want every team to be undefeated or with as few losses as possible by the time we play them. Especially Miami, GT, FSU, Clemson, and UNC. Beating them when they are doing well means more than beating Duke, Wake Forest and BC when they are doing well.

I generally cheer for the conference, just for perception reasons. I hate it when the media types say, "VT has dominated the ACC...but it's the ACC..." If the ACC looks good, we look good. The more precise answer is that it sort of depends. I have no love for GT, but I hate USCw, so in that game I was really cheering for not-USCw. It just so happened that GT was that team. It was cool to watch the former #1 team with their pretentious fight song and jerk of a head coach lose to a mediocre ACC team.

"Exit light..."

All for the ACC...as long as the conference affiliate is on our schedule. Otherwise, I hope they loose. And in the case of this season, I'd like to see Clemson get floored by Georgia.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

Clemson very well could be on our schedule, if they win the Atlantic (as expected) and we return to form (fingers crossed).

"Exit light..."

I root for them all, but....
If UVA loses, then I don't mind.
After this year, I might root against Maryland just because....
It's going to be a transition to pull for Notre Dame...I just want the Hokies to be able to bust their ACC cherry....
I kinda like Paul Johnson at GT. It's good to have a villain. His battle of the adjustments with Bud Foster are epic, when we both have the talent. I enjoyed the whole chop-block fit in that I actually think Frank Beamer got a little pissed.....good to see some emotion. It makes for a good rivalry, and their fans are funny as hell on their message boards. I think there is more depth to the VT/GT game than we Hokies may like to admit....
And living in South Carolina, while I respect what Clemson is doing as a program and how they won at LSU, I will go to my grave thinking that Danny Pearman gave Dabo our signs and that is the reason that they punked us TWICE two years ago........

I also don't hate Paul Johnson. Coming from a veer option high school, I enjoy seeing a well executed triple option offense. Actually our coaches went to a coaching clinic at GT a couple years ago.

Only times I want via is if they come in to playing us with 5 wins and we ruin their bowl hopes. This year I will be pulling for Clemson and FSU as long as they are in the national title hunt.

#BEATOHIOST

I root for ACC. With strength of schedule and perception now, I want everyone to do as well as they can. Plus, since we play most of them, I want them to have winning records.

The ACC needs to win big the first weekend. I'm tired of being called the new Big East now that they are gone, and being bottom of the barrel. Everyone winning is the only way to change that perception.

I do hate Miami though...

I'm generally pro-ACC, except for LOLUVA, Miami, and Duke in basketball.

This makes me incredibly conflicted about Clemson-Georgia. I would love for the ACC to do some things on opening weekend, but last I checked, Dabo is still a boob, and I have a bit of a soft spot for UGA.

I'll pull for any ACC team in a bowl game. In all other cases, however, FUCK CLEMSON.

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

I feel like some people may be confusing SEC homerism with conference support. I support other ACC teams because it directly benefits us. (We get more exposure, better recruits...so on and so forth)

But I will never root for loluva.

I'm a little salty towards Clemson, but I found myself cheering for them against LSU last year.

#GoAcc. The better they look, all arguments about Tech's SOS become invalid (and I hear them a lot). And yes even UVA. I loved it when UVA actually resembled a good football team in 2011 until we came in and ya know... 38-0... bro. I hate UVA, Miami, and Clemson but I want them to be good, and I want to beat them when they're good.

@HaydenDubya

I pull for all ACC teams except UVA and don't share the anti-Clemson sentiment seen here. Dabo sucks of course but the university and fan base aren't at the same level of over-privileged and delusional chachbaggery prevalent at UNC, UVA and GT. I had a great experience at Clemson last year even though we lost (the only exception walking by a herd of drunken Kappa Alphas at their frat house). Several fans carried out intelligent conversations, said repeatedly they respect VT and Beamer and they definitely truly care about their football. I hope they beat Georgia and I loved watching them beat LSU in the bowl. If it was UNC or UVA on the rise I'm not sure I could handle it. Clemson doesn't appear to be dropping off anytime soon with their recruits so I've made up my mind I can deal with their success. I'd love to play them in a few ACC championships and send them home to boost us into a top #4 spot once our offense reaches the level of our defense.

I don't know what a hokie is, but God is one of them."

+1 for 'chachbaggery.'

Agreed. The only problem I have with Clemson is that cheer where it sounds like they forget how to spell "Clemson"

"C!
L!
E!
M!
S!
O!
... [frantically sound it out/look at your media guide]
N!"

It was a catch

A bunch of my childhood friends went to Clemson. And, while those guys are great and harbor no ill will towards myself or the Hokies, every visit I've made to that godforsaken campus has been marred by some rich redneck spewing a kitchen sink full of hate my way because of my affiliation with VT. Often this has occurred to the point where other calmer/nicer/less drunk Clemson fans have stepped in on my behalf. And what you mentioned about the KA's is a story I've also personally experienced. It sucks. It's essentially a public de-pantsing. And they do it to EVERYONE not wearing orange and purple.

I've never understood Clemson's entitlement complex. It's almost SEC-esque the amount of dickheadishness they collectively harbor. I will never pull for Clemson (unless it helps us). I'm getting some miles out of this one, but I side with our first President here:

GO HOKIES!

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

This seems to fit here best.

Clemson Kings Speech

For me it's a lot more complicated. (If I had time, I'd do a flow chart akin to the famous Mike London fail chart). Generally, if an ACC team (and the team's name is not UVA) plays an OOC game, I want them to win. If the ACC team is not on our schedule, and the OOC team is on our schedule, I want the OOC team to win. If an ACC team on our schedule is playing another ACC team not on our schedule, I want the team on our schedule to win. If both are on our schedule, and one of the teams is ranked higher than us and the other lower, I want the lower ranked team to win. (I like rankings chaos. This may change when the playoff arrives.) If both are ranked higher than we are, I generally pull for whichever team generates the most chaos in the standings if they win. If both are ranked lower than VT, I want the higher ranked of the two to win. The exception to every previously stated rule is UVA. If UVA has a record of 0-12 at the end of the season, I consider it a perfect season.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

So, in other words, maximize our strength of schedule, and root for the underdog when all else is equal.

Yeah, for the most part. I boil it down to "what is most beneficial for the Hokies in this game?" I remember during the magical 1999 run rooting for whoever was ranked 1 or 2 to loose. Same thought process.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

i initially convince myself to root for ACC in non-conf games for higher conf prestige but if/when they lose, i generally take joy in the conference teams that i hate getting stomped.

in the past, i've pulled for UVA to win 5 games so we can ruin their bowl hopes on thanksgiving weekend. this year i'm rooting for 0-12 so the ex-cop will be canned and they'll lose their recruiting class.

i always want miami to start undefeated until we play them so they are ranked way too high because "THE U IS BACK!!!!!!" every year apparently.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

Yes. They look good, we all look good. Like the old saying goes "Me and my brother against my cousin, me and my cousin against the world."

"War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.”~~Judge Holden

I would like the ACC to be a better conference in the long run so I root for them except that school off I-64. Besides us winning, few things get me happier than seeing an ACC school beat an SEC school. I hate the SEC because I feel they are way over hyped and I love watching them lose.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Absolutely support other ACC teams (as long as it doesn't negatively affect us). But the better the ACC does, the better we do in BCS computer polls.

Of course that's subject to change when the new playoff system comes out.

As much as I hate UVA, and want them to lose, I'd rather have our game decide the Coastal Division. Having the opportunity to snub them getting into the ACCCG would be more fulfilling than beating the usual 3-8 team. But I will still cheer against them. But every other ACC team against a non conference game I'd cheer for them. #goacc

Our motto bringing spirit true, that we may ever serve you

I get the whole UVa hate thing, but let me ask you this:
-How great was it watching the FSU fans getting beat by UVa 2 years ago?
-How awesome was it watching the band wagon 'U' fans wipe their tears from loses to UVa 2 years in a row?
-Who didn't love how depressed USCw fans, players and coaches were when they almost didnt squeak out a win vs UVa in 2010?
Perhaps its just that I like UVAs soft perception from the outside world and how they are an agent of embarrassment to other teams who cant win convincingly against them. A majority of their current fans are smug fratty a-holes, a fact I used to rub in my sister's face (a UVA alum unfortunately). After the whole April 16 thing when we got time off though, I did spend a bit of it visiting my sister wearing my VT gear. And I will admit that at bars or parties the uva people I had no connection with were legitimately nice and concerned. Perhaps it was that experience that made me love watching our 38-0 bro game, but generally root for them otherwise.

That said, there is nothing I would like more than to watch da U go 0-12 every year. I wish GT would lose enough for Paul 'chop block' Johnson to get fired too.

I'm #goacc because I want the ACC to be taken seriously in something other than basketball once again. Primarily it's more of a cheering against the ACC opponent than for another ACC team during the regular season. I can never, ever pull for Miami, but it'd be pretty sweet to see Florida go down in flames to them. That kind of logic. During Bowl Season I will take more of a rooting interest in the ACC team.

There are specific rules for certain teams however.

1. UVA losing is always funny and should be actively encouraged.

2. Fuck UNC. They have a long history of douchebaggery. Their stadium is awful. They deserve to get ban hammered by the NCAA purely because of those seat backs and hey, about that, wheres the ban hammer anyway NCAA? I still want to see them beat USCe because that's better for the ACC, and it would be mildly amusing since I live in Columbia, but I also have a lot of good friends that are Gamecock fans. Mostly I just want the Battle-for-being-called-Carolina to get here already because, wooo grown man football.

3. Fuck Notre Dame, not just half the time, but all the time. Then. Now. Always.

4. I actually have no ill will towards Clemson at all, I've got a lot of fond memories of kicking their assess from the 90s up through 2007 and all of my interactions with Clemson fans have been really great, both home and away. I do however absolutely enjoy when they pull a Clemson, because it's just so them. I just hope its to another ACC team most of the time. But god damn, that Orange Bowl was hilarious. The goal line fumble recovered for a 100 yard touch down going the other way may be the most Clemson thing ever.

4. I could work up to a really strong hate of Pitt again if I had to, but until then, #goacc

5. Fuck Notre Dame some more, just in case that wasn't clear.

6. I want to see UMD thrown into the well and will really enjoy their tour-of-shame through the ACC this year. Burn turtle, burn.

THIS THIS THIS!!!!

Only thing missing is 1b) "Fuck Miami"

I like how there are two #4s. I don't know if it was intentional, but it's quite fitting that the second #4 was for Pitt...a school not worthy of their own number. HA!

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

I hate Clemson just because we've dropped 3 straight to them and it's high time that changed. I was eating lunch at a hoity toity country club place with my grandparents once and some girls from Duke were sitting at the next table. The arrogant entitled filth (not to mention lameass VT would you like fries with that jokes) I overheard coming out of their mouths allowed me to build up an eternal well of hatred for them. Fuck Miami because look at them. If you're not a fan they're just eminently hate-able. Same goes for Florida State, although a lot of that comes from losing the MNC.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I can't hate on teams that beat us because they were just better. I hate on teams that deserve it based upon dirty play, trashy fans, asshole players, and dirtbag coaches. I hate teams that have earned it by pissing me off for whatever reason, not who just beat us. Them being better than us is on us for not being good enough. I guess that's why I don't really hold any ill will towards Clemson - Dabo pisses me off sometimes, but their fans I've encountered are all nice.

It was a catch

Well then its hard to justify hating Miami because they don't have asshole fans... or fans

(other than Mama Giraffe)

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

Well you don't have to check all the boxes - calling yourself "da U" is enough. And wasn't Vanilla Ice wearing a Miami hat in the Ice Ice Baby video? If so, check the asshole fan box.

It was a catch

I am interested in the effect wins & losses have on the image of the ACC. I root for bottom tier ACC schools to beat OOC opponents or at least look competitive. I want VT to be seen as better than all the other ACC schools so sometimes I don't want the top tier ACC schools to win. In bowl games I want the ACC to win every game. Root against ND. Would only change if they became full ACC member. Uva depends on who they are playing. It is a delicate balance.

#Let's Go - Hokies
