I was so absorbed with the trailer that the fact that it's August is still sinking in. I feel unprepared. I have a lot I need to do to get prepared for the Bama game.
Each year I pick out a nice bottle of bourbon which magically ties to our success. If the first few games go bad, I switch up the bourbon. If the first few games go great, I get more of the same.
My question to the TKP community is two part. First, what is your gameday drink of preference? Second, what bottle of bourbon should I purchase for the Bama game? Important note is that last year I bought Wild Turkey Rare Breed and well...7-6.

Evan-Williams green label. but i am also a poor college student
I survived off of that in college. It was a staple.
Back when D Evans and R Williams were on the team it was mandatory at my residence for all on the premises to take shots of this when said running back scored a touchdown. Im sure i wasnt the only one with this house rule
Makers of course!!! Haven't tried the Makers 46 yet though....could also be an option.
Makers 46 is absurdly delicious, best enjoyed neat.
I will have to try it out for #beatbama, thanks Joe!
Nothing is more refined and Southern than Woodford Reserve. I could make a popsicle out of the stuff.
Well, assuming it was possible to make a popsicle out of it, which sounds awesome.
With a little bit of liquid nitrogen, anything is possible...
Although a traditionalist and stick to WT 101 on game day, I gotta agree, Woodford is the smoothest out there, imo.
My old roommate left me some Makers when he moved out. Good roommate.
You can never go wrong with a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Kinda pricey, but very worth it
you can't put a price on #BEATBAMA. Welcome to the community!
gameday drink of preference: large quantities of cheap beer.
a buddy of mine bought me a bottle of basil haydens that I am waiting until #beatbama to consume
Traditionally beer (usually Sam or Yuengling unless I feel spending a bit more), but for this year I have a bottle of Whistlepig Rye Whiskey which I think I'll be using during #BEATBAMA
#ALLOFTHEBOURBON. i'm quite partial to anything by wild turkey. their american honey is absolutely incredible, but i'll have to hit up the ABC store to see what i'm going to drink for #BEATBAMA.
usually i start out drinking beer on game day though, but grow antsy after one or two and switch to bourbon. and then i follow that up with bourbon. and then some more bourbon after that. bourbon bourbon bourbon.
welp. my mouth is watering so i'm gonna be stopping by the liquor store on the way home from work now. thanks dozer.
As I don't partake in any alcoholic beverages, I'll be consuming a steady diet of Freight Train Thomas and a dash of JC with a whole lot of Defense.
Afterall, it is....#DOOMSDAY
Don't take this the wrong way but... how did you survive Tech? Mad props, turkey leg for you!
It's probably more common than you think. I'm not a huge partaker of adult beverages and I make a point not to drink before/during games. Game's just a lot more fun if I know what's going on, plus, I'd hate to be that guy giving his loud, drunken commentary during the game. Nobody likes that guy.
True story. Seems like every year, I had "that guy" sitting behind me offering his insightful commentary. He usually sounded like John Madden on barbiturates. I'll have a drink or two before the game at a tailgate, but I'm with you - I want to be fully aware of the game.
Evan Williams was my drink of choice during the Darren Evans/Ryan Williams era...see what I did there?
I see what you did there....
Typically I roll with Maker's but this year I think I'm going with Blanton's. I'm hoping the increase in price will bring an increase in wins...
Who are we? The Yankees? The SEC?
Blanton's is delicious. Well worth the price.
Nestle Quik...shaken, not stirred! (Father of 3 toddlers)
Drinking Schedule for 7:30pm Thursday night games for my mom, dad, and myself:
~1:30: arrive at lot 8, pull out tables and chairs, crack first Bud Light.
From 1:52 - 5:30: pace ourselves, switching between Bud Light and water while eating food.
5:42 - 6:59: Commence to heavier drinking of beer. Intersperse airplane bottles of Wild Turkey.
7:00: Mistakenly have the drunken realization that we're missing Enter Sandman, quickly begin putting things back into car while cursing.
7:08: stuff pockets, socks, underwear, and hat with assorted airplane bottles, take our traditional pre-game good luck shot of RumpleMintz to freshen our breath, and begin our journey to Lane (after grabbing one last beer for the walk).
7:18: arrive at Lane, chug rest of beer, throw into trashcan, and push our way through crowd. We participate in a number of Let's Go chants, including the ones pre-Sandman.
7:23: After coming to the verge of vomiting due to the excessive jumping for Enter Sandman, we once again attain drunkuillibrium and get a Coke to pour our airplanes bottles into. We immediately begin high-fiving everyone around us as the Hokies take the field for the kickoff.
Life in this moment of inebriation and joy makes every other day bearable.
your family is awesome
I.... need....... footbawww
Well, why don't you just go ahead and make us a nice little video, and maybe the season gets here just a little bit quicker? Hm?
I was going to, but I head out of the country tomorrow and haven't had enough time to finish. Dozen will have you covered though with the Season Begins trailer
I normally start out with some homebrewed beer. Hopefully, I'll be moving onto some bourbon after a couple of those this year.
Just brewed what I'm calling the Beat Bama Belgian Pale Ale. All I need is to make the label.
I don't normally drink pale ales, but I'd definitely give that a shot.
This one is supposed to come in at about 5.5%. Looking for a floral and spicy aroma with some caramel-ly and biscuity malt. The Belgian yeast will add something to it too. I just wanted to brew a session-able and tasty beer for the 31st. Chances are I'll be drinking this beer quick. So I didn't want it to be too strong or heavy.
Beer drinker mainly here. Depends what I'm in the mood for or where I am, though more than likely craft.
This year I will have my keezer up and running, and so I'll have two sixtels of Low Brau on tap...
Beer as well...
Brown Ales, Nice cold Lagers, and Hefeweizen if I'm lucky...
Oh, I'm a hefe man. In fact, that is my staple beer for Low Brau.
If you're looking for a Hef, check out the Breckenridge Brewery Agave Wheet... it'll change your life!
Just went to the Breckenridge Brewery site and used their beer locator.....looks like I'll have to make a run (nearest location is about 45 minutes away) and give it a try........
If I'm watching the game at the bar (Blackfinn in Charlotte), I'm drinking coors light towers of beer with an occasional shot of whatever speaks to me. If I'm in Blacksburg, pretty much whatever beer I can grab mixed with Jack mini bottles stuffed into my lucky orange socks. If I'm at home, I normally have a bottle of Woodford or Knob.
Beer: Busch Light or Yuengling
Bourbon: Four Roses Small Batch, Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, or Ancient Age if your feeling tuffff
Me and the Captain make it happen
Fall is my favorite season, for two reasons - 1. Hokie football and 2. beer. Fall beers are my favorites and what I generally turn to on game day. I brew my own occasionally, otherwise whatever sounds interesting. Can't go wrong with Dogfish Head, Sam Adams, or Bluegrass Brewing Company's Bourbon Barrel Stout. I had to throw in something bourbon-related, after all...
BBC!!
Jesus Christ, my brain is so tainted. I saw BBC and instantly thought..
...well, that's not important. The interwebz has forever ruined me.
Bourbon Blues Company on Bourbon Street right? I'm sure that's exactly what you were thinking when you saw BBC. It couldn't possibly mean anything else
Blacksburg Brewing Company...
Bourbon Barrel stouts...

Milk and cookies*
^This.
so apparently we have a lot of home brewers on this site. I'd be happy to do taste testings and act like I know what I am talking about.
I can make something like that happen, though it would be in DC. I have a large cellaring collection (although it recently took a hit).
It seems this whole living in Florida thing just isn't working out for me...
Same goes for living in Louisiana...
I'm a student in Blacksburg. Let me know and there will be beer. Especially during football season.
Bourbon: woodford reserve, american honey, and I'm adding bulleit this year
Beer: the occasional light domestic (I know I know)
Other: Apple pie from the shine capitol of the world
That apple pie shine is mighty smooth and tasty! Never had it before a game though...hmm...
highly suggest any type of shine be incorporated into pregame festivities.
dude have i got some stories involving hokie football and moonshine. . . a potent duo.
Have it at every game and will have some for #BEATBAMA at my house
On game days it is the three B's.
Beer (preferably cheap)
Bourbon (preferably Wild Turkey)
Bottled Water (to mix in between, and allow for more of the first two)
Broke-ass college me drank Old Crow.
Graduated me graduated to Makers.
Anything.
Johnnie Blue. I don't drink often but when I do...
1 glass for the likes of Austin Peay, WKU, and Marshall
2 glasses for the likes of Pitt, ECU
3 Glasses for the likes of UVA, Clemson, FSU & MIAMI, and the big ooc games.
4+ glasses for the big ooc game losses...
Im looking forward to a 3 glass night vs Bama.
Wish I had moved earlier so I could have a homebrew, but after leaving the land of no Yuengling (sp?) I am on a steady supply of that and maybe some Breck Brewery Agave Wheet for good measure!
When I moved out to Chicago, I always picked up a few (read: 3+) cases of Yuengling every time I came back to VA, just to have some vestige of my senior year.
Edit this submission, just found out that Samuel Adams Oktoberfest is out and as such I cannot drink anything but that until they stop selling it.
+1000 Sam Octoberfest is the tits.
Doesn't it come out in July now, and run till feb?
I hope so...the only beer better that they put out is Old Fezziwig Ale
That, the Chocolate Boch and the Holiday Porter.
Man do I love their Winter Seasonal pack
Porter is great, the Boch is good (I'm just not really a Boch guy). Thank God they took out that crappy Cranberry Lambic. It tasted like feet and can rot in hell.
Coors or Bud Light. Arnold Palmers, too.
Turkey 101 but with last years season I probably should have drank Everclear
Sorry fellow Hokie beer connoisseurs, I smash Bud Light on the reg followed by shots of Wild Turkzilla (aka HokieFuel) when we score TDs!
I typically go to Bub's Dive Bar, a beach-side bar in San Diego owned by an alum. For 9am games, usually start with Guinness to go with breakfast. For later games, probably go with something like Sculpin from Ballast Point. If it's time to get rowdy, the bar makes pretty good Rails.
If you're ever in SD during football season, you must go. It's a nice piece of Blacksburg on the West Coast.
A good friend of mine has a brother who recently moved there. I was surprised that there are a lot of college themed bars (VT, OSU, etc.) but maybe I was just hearing him wrong
Funny you mention Bubs. My company is based in SD and a coworker mentioned I should check it out. I'll be back out that way again in October so I will have to swing in
I'm up in LA/Orange County along with my sister who's a Hokie alum as well... we're always down to make a good trip. Really awesome to know. Where is Bub's, closer to PB or downtown?
It's in PB on the main strip up from the pier. When I was stationed in SD we would for their tots for the 9am games. I heard they have expanded, haven't been there in a few years. Great place run by some NRV locals who moved to the west coast.
Went to a few events in Huntington Beach with the Orange County Hokie club, seemed like an active group.
PBR when I was a student. And because:
Now, it's still beer, just whatever I'm in the mood for.
Bourbon: Woodford, Makers, Jim Beam Devil's cut, WT 101
Beer: Miller Lite, Landshark, Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada, or some craft Amber ale
or ZIMA!
(*sarcasm*)
Jack Daniels
I'm a simple man, on game day I stick to crown royale and bud light.
Usually beer. After losses I may break out the vodka until things stop hurting.
It's from the Frontier, that's how you know it's good.
I have heard very good things about this. Going to get a bottle for #BEATBAMA
Never been a big fan of the Bulleit, I just don't get the hype
Elijah Craig 12 year when I'm feeling classy, Wild Turkey 101 when I'm not.
Elijah Craig is good and a great value. Very drinkable. I will have it and a couple craft beers (Flavor of the month/week).
tailgate: something cheap and in cans consumed in bulk along with whatever whiskey, jager, shine, rum, etc, is in the cooler.
bar hopping pre-game: something decent but poundable, newcastle, devils backbone vienna, fat tire, bass, etc along with whatever shot/shooter we end up ordering.
home: sometimes nothing (this is a recent development since my daughter was born) but a sixer of the above mentioned beers and i usually got makers or gentleman jack in the covert.
Somehow Fightin' Cock became my drink of choice when in attendance at Lane.
When watching from home/bar it's Maker's all day long.
My own home-brew!

(How do you get the picture to automatically show up?)
I believe if you click "Get Embed Codes" at the bottom right of the picture, a list should appear on the right. Copy and Paste the Code Labeled "HTML Image" into the comment box and the picture should appear. Awesome Label!!
Jake Johnson sighting!
I'll go for a good, stiff, root beer. If we don't win, I might get carbonated.
bourbon & bourbon & bourbon & bourbon & bourbon & bourbon & bourbon & bourbon &
ALL OF THE MILLER LITES
I drink my own home-brew! And make the labels...

thats badass i drink my homebrew too but i dont have those sweet labels
I don't drink....but a turkey leg for inventive and appropriate marketing.
If you feel like splurging on a good bottle of whiskey, I highly (HIGHLY) recommend Whistle Pig. Its a rye whiskey that is grown, harvested, process, distilled and bottled on the same farm in my home state of Vermont - only distillery in the nation to have such a process.
Not sure it is best for gameday drinking - I prefer Buffalo Trace or Wild Turkey during games - but definitely a great sipping whiskey.
Looks like I'm taking a little shopping trip to NC sometime in the near future...
I toss a banana, many strawberries, and a mango into a blender. No alcohol until I go out. I usually chill at my place and watch the game. With a cat.
CatOnATreadmill?
Going to have to go with my favorite craft brews: Flying Dog: Raging Bitch and Lagunitas: Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale.
Also haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but Jimmy Beam Green Label is pretty damn smooth.
Flying Dog is brewed in my hometown. My brother did a tour of their brewery a couple weeks ago.
Frederick, MD? I'm in Northern VA and need to get up there to go on a tour. Their beers are banging. Honorable mention goes to Heavy Seas up near Baltimore as another on the list to go tour.
We have a restaurant downtown called Brewer's Alley. I don't go there much but everyone I talk to says their brews are pretty good too.
Brewers alley is a must. Flying dog tour is sweet too, lot of samples.
If you can, Yuengling is pretty awesome.
I'm going to stop now, because I can ramble about beers and breweries for hours. Those three are a good must start.
Beer: Port City Essential (Pale Ale) or Monumental (IPA), whatever American light/lite lager I have in the fridge.
Bourbon: Eagle Rare, Woodford Reserve, or 1792
I'm with you on the PCBC, but I'm going try and stock up on Marzen this fall and make it my regular football beer.
on the liquor side, the options range from Wild Turkey, to Wild Turkey 101, to Wild Turkey Rare Breed. With the occasional Evan(s) Williams.
Fun fact, Wild Turkey 101 is the original Wild Turkey. The 81 proof version was made fairly recently actually (which I assume is what you're talking about).
I only drink beer and I only drink American!
Natty isn't American. See the Tom Raper video above. PBR is, drink it ya asshole
Keystone. It's smooth, like Keith Stone.
hank hill? that you?
Well let's see. Usually when The Masters kicks off I switch to Coors Light for the summer. I'll throw in a shot or two of bourbon at a big cookout/4th of July/Memorial Day. Other than sacred holidays these are also know as "parties" for us slightly older TKP'ers with kids and shit. The first VT game of the season is when I'll switch back to bourbon and water on the reg. I prefer Jim Beam as a daily because I can have 3 or 4 and not get sloppy. (3.5 year olds don't understand why daddy feels like shit when he's hungover.) I also keep some turkey 101 around for a quick buzz (No more than 2 because see above) If I'm feeling refined which is hardly ever I'll buy a bottle of Bookers and normally drink it neat. During #BeatBama I'll probably stick to JB.
The best part of waking up is bourbon in your cup! Knob Creek.
With this being my first year as an alumni I guess I will have to figure my drinking preferences for different games stat, can never go wrong with shots of fireball upon waking up.
"can never go wrong with shots of fireball upon waking up"
I think I just threw up in my mouth a bit. Just thinking about that stuff sends a shiver up my spine.
I have had good and bad days with fireball, like a relationship the more time passes all I can remember are the good times.
I love me some fireball. Also stuff tastes great mixed with Dr pepper as does american honey
Fireball and Angry Orchard (Angry Balls) - taste likes Mott's cinnamon apple sauce. Girly drink, but damn good.
Hating on people for what they drink is dumb. I can't stand beer or liquor "snobs". I drink things that i think taste good. There is no right or wrong thing to drink, unless its zima that stuff is for hooville. that combination sounds completely and totally amazing. And I currently have both ingredients in my fridge. You have set my beverage for the night
Not hating on anyone for drinking Fireball. It's just not for me. I guess I don't have a refined enough palate.
oh no wasnt referring to you, i was just talking about a couple times on here and other places where i have either gotten hate or seen other people getting it for their choice of beverage. your fine for not liking it. just dont like when people talk down on others for their choice of beverage. just because a person drinsk craft beers and top shelf liqours doesnt mean they should judge people who dont. thats my only point
So, how did it go?
your suggestion was quite wonderful as a matter of fact
I think I'll be going to Atlanta with some Bulleit as well as something from A. Smith Bowman, a local distillery down the road from me.
Dammit, this thread just has me wanting to drink a bunch of bourbon at 10:00 AM while I'm at work
This thread got me thinking...does anybody know the beer rules in Georgia? Can you buy it at a grocery store or do you need to go to a liquor store? Prices compared to Virginia? Can you buy it on Sunday (to keep the celebration going the next day)?
I know you can buy it at grocery stores. I live live in Alabama just across the river from GA and just recently you can buy beer here on Sundays after 1 pm. Pretty sure GA is the same.
You can buy beer, wine, and bitch beer in grocery stores. The grocery stores here in Augusta sell cases. Liquor is available at a package store. And alcohol sales start at noon on Sundays.
I was looking at a map and saw that I might be passing relatively close to Augusta on my way to Atlanta, depending on which way I decide to go. Is it worth stopping there? Can an average schlub see any part of Augusta National?
On game days, I just snort up some pepper spray...I stand in solidarity with Gangsta' Kicker Cody Journell.
In college, it was beer, cheap beer at that. Usually Keystone. After college it was better beer. Now that I am a sophisticated member of society (clearly since I went to VT) I will, for the Bama game to start, enjoy a glass of Eagle Rare. The setting for the rest of the day will have an impact on what I drink throughout the season. If I plan on drinking and watching football all day, I will throw in shots of Wild Turkey and beer afterwards. If i am just watching the game and then doing something else, it will be the glass of Eagle Rare and call it a day. (ok maybe 2 glasses)
I am also a Beer guy all the way.
For #BEATBAMA I am going to bring growlers of whatever @BeerControl or Joe want from the local Jax FL breweries: Bold City, Intuition Ale Works and Engine 15 Brewing Company...You guys are going......right?
I stick to the Doctor (Pepper, that is) before games. I like to enjoy the game. I've also discovered a link between my alcohol consumption and the play of our football team. Drunk me = Boise State in 2010, Clemson in 2011, and the Sugar Bowl.
Throw some Red Stag in that Dr. Pepper and you have a winner.
Try that mix with fireball or american honey instead
You son of a....
Those were easily 3 of my top 5 most emotionally traumatizing experiences in my 22 years of existence. You sick bastard.
MAKER'S MARK!!! And some easy beer to shotgun like bud light or natty light right before heading in.
John J. Bowman Virginia Straight Single-Barrel Bourbon. Keep it in-state
God I love this screenname.
I'm slightly obsessed with Evan Williams Honey. It's not the best quality but it's cheap and man is it easy to drink. Mix with a small pour of Coke and you have yourself a wonderful beverage.
If mixed correctly with a good light beer and food you will be set up for a great game day.
Wild Turkey or Jim Beam every game
I'm drinking this on August 31st.
http://www.drinksmixer.com/drink545.html
And now, so am I. You, sir, are a genius.
If you really want to have a good time go with a Beesting:
2 shots American Honey
2 shots Wild Turkey
Served over ice
Couple of those and you'll be good to go!
Yuengling and Kraken
Coors light, jaeger, and whatever anyone brings by. Normally horribly hungover from the previous night anyway.
Orange Camo Busch Light
Protip: The orange camo makes it taste better.
But the first couple games are rough after getting to enjoy German beer in vast quantities all summer.
And Cavalier tears when we play them.
Did I miss something, or has Foster's really not been mentioned yet?
EDIT: After all, it's Australian for FEAR
or drink bud fosters pregame, half budweiser, half fosters, surprisingly crisp and refreshing.
Whoa. Bud Fosters.
[My mind is blown. Intended to put a horse head exploding here, but couldn't find one.]
This is serious? I'm going to have to try it, despite my opinion on both beers.
I mean I recently discovered that Guinness and Apple Ale go really well together. How bad could a Bud Fosters be? Besides, I feel we're all obligated to try said drink anyway
Apple ale or cider. Black velvets are Guinness & cider. Apple ale has been gaining popularity as of late, due to reds, but is way different than a cider.
I've actually had it with reds Apple ale and then with angry orchard if that's what you mean. I believe angry orchard is a cider, but either way they're both really good.
Yeah angry orchard is cider. Sam Adams brand. Good stuff. Do you like black & tans too?
Believe it or not I've actually never had one. There's no doubt in my mind I would like it though. I'm gonna make a real effort to order one the next time I'm out
Knob Creek......
Speaking of which, I tailgate every year at the last house on Southgate before you get to the stadium. And every year a couple houses down from there sits a tailgate that always has a massive bottle of bourbon enshrined on a table (I believe it is normally Woodford or Knob Creek). I have always wanted to know who tailgates there and the tradition/story behind that lovely, delicious, obscenely huge bottle.
I tailgate there as a matter of fact. Its a giant woodford bottle. We always tell the newcomers that we drank it all in one day. Can't remember where it truly came from. Has been there longer than I have been
haha thats awesome. Maybe I'll stop by next time! I usually have my head stuck in a beer cooler or the big smoker down at the Kline house.
Been tailgating there since 06. Great food great people and great bourbon. I was brought in as a friend of a legacy but have been fully initiated now. And yes our tailgate has initiations
A while back I began the ritual of an annual trip to the beverage store (yes, annual, as I am more of a craft brew drinker) for a bottle of bourbon for football season. So, the timing of this forum was perfect.
Shouldn't 12 (wins) be the logical scenario that flows from BEATBAMA? I thought so too, and picked up some Elijah Craig 12 last night. After popping it open, I am very pleased with this choice. This bourbon has a very good balance and nice oak tones at the end. A very good sippin' bourbon indeed.
Thanks for the recommendation.
American Honey is a staple of game day...sprinkle in some Coors Lt......my northern friends usually smuggle me in some Red Dog (which we hide to drink like crack heads in an alley because most of my tailgate faithful look down on this forgotten but tasty brew)
it varies week to week, but usually the best double ipas and imperial stouts I can get my hands on.
stone enjoy by will be consumed for the bama game.
My family and I have a tradition of doing shots of American Honey whenever the Hokies score a TD. I got a handle of it for my Birthday, so our offense better get it together. Otherwise I'll just have to drink it to ease the pain...
There is a reason for my avi on this site.
And also WT101 shots pre-game, pass the American Honey bottle post-game.
The go-to easy drink at the beginning of games in Evan Williams Black and Diet Dr. Pepper and usually stick with that the whole game. Been doing it for years. In addition shots of Makers are interspersed in there. After the game a nice glass of Four Roses, Bookers, Basil Hayden, Woodsford Reserve Double Oak (I find regular Woodsford too sweet) and a cigar to talk about the game and what was or what could have been.
If you have not had it the Woodsford Reserve Double Oak is excellent. Buffalo Trace, Basil Hayden's, and 1792 have never steered me wrong.
Here is what I ended up with:

The cigars and sparkling wine are for the Friday before the season starts. Went with Makers 46. Also picked up my first fall beer.
Tumbler is solid, one of my favorite sierras. I love fall beers.
This is the start of what my #BEATBAMA get together will be drinking.
I want my Own still
If Tech loses, I'm going to be drinking everything.
If Tech wins, I'm going to be drinking everything.
I second that.
Just had bookers for the first time tonight, got dayum! New game day bourbon.
Orange and maroon Kool-Aid.
