Virginia Tech Football Recruiting: Hezekiah Grimsley Commits to the Hokies

Hokies seal the deal on wideout for its 2017 recruiting class after Blacksburg visit.

Fresh off a Virginia Tech visit on Thursday, the Hokies secured a verbal commitment from Hezekiah Grimsley. The Lafayette HS (Williamsburg) product opted for the Hokies over Maryland. The 6-0, 170 pound wide receiver is rated a 3-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite.

Lafayette coach Andy Linn believes Grimsley is taylor made for Tech's uptempo offense.

(Grimsley) had 38 receptions for a Bay Rivers District-leading 1,065 yards and 13 touchdowns at wide receiver. He was the district's top punt returner with a 24.6-yard average and three touchdowns, in addition to intercepting seven passes at defensive back.

"The new offense (of recently hired head coach Justin Fuente) chucks it all over the yard," Linn said of Virginia Tech. "Hezekiah will fit in perfect.

Grimsley recounted a March visit to Blacksburg with The Key Play at The Opening Regional Washington DC.

"We sat down in (Justin Fuente's) office and talked a little bit about what would happen if I came to Virginia Tech and what I would get out of that," Grimsley told The Key Play. "I like how (Fuente) throws the ball, and wants something for me. I feel like I have a future there, he said I'd play early and I think I will."

Agreed. just the names on our roster alone have to be worth two extra games on ESPN. Just think about all the material they will have at their disposal to fill in the fourth quarter of 66-10 wins.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Especially if we land this guy...

Call me old but I love how he didn't celebrate a single touchdown other than slapping the ball and finding a ref to hand it to. I also love how in a couple of those plays when he's running free to the end zone he actually turns on another gear and speeds to the touchdown instead of relaxing.

That kind of stuff stands out to me. Glad to have him aboard!

Agreed it is gread to see. Although, I've known his HS Head Coach for 20 years, I don't think he puts up with much of that anyways.

Leg for bringing that up!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

I always thought I was the only one. Those things stand out to me.

Not trying to be Johnny Rain Cloud here or anything, but you will find it unusual for HS players to do much dapping, dabbing, and dancing and such in the end zone. Most HS leagues have very, very strict anti-celebration policies.

At least we do here in North Cackalacka. 15 yarders are handed out for just pointedly high-fiving in the end zone around here.

Leonard. Duh.

.....and plan to get there again (real soon).

Another old guy upvote here....I miss guys like Jim Taylor or Gayle Sayers just flipping the ball to the ref and jogging to the sidelines to sit down.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Probably because he is so dominant against the other kids that it is just business as usual haha. Most highlight videos I see, the celebrations only go as far as chest bumping teammates and such. Never any dancing or hamming it up.

Great news! Now let's go get Hunter and Vilain!

What about L'Carpetbagger?

Nice! On another note, the QB looked pretty good too. Got rid of the ball fast. Who is it?

Interesting, the internets say it's Chase Pine the LB that committed to Pitt over us.

His lose.

His loss too

Welcome to the family, Hezekiah! May your touchdowns be plenty and may you never know what a loss to UVA feels like.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Heck, I can't even remember what that feels like.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I don't want to live in a world where my kids know what a defeat to LOLUVA feels like.

Will the announcers be able to pronounce his name?

Brother Hezekiah is in the house!

He plays that, I'm gonna act like I'm gonna just jog out of bounds trick, then hit another gear up the sidelines, really well!

Also I guess he's not the kind of player to pay attention to "Peter" calls. Dude picked up punts that typically most players are running from.
And last point, who is number 11 and how many deep throws landed perfectly during full stride

And last point, who is number 11 and how many deep throws landed perfectly during full stride

I went back and watched again after reading your comment. IMO just 1. The rest looked like Hezy slowed his stride a bit to have it land in his hands. Nice toss with good air under it, and a great adjustment by Hezy to make it look easy, but not quite full stride.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Chase Pine. Appears to play OLB as well.

It was a rhetorical question, really didn't think anyone was gonna go back and actually count. A lot nicer then most hs qb deep balls I've seen

His highlight video is one of the best I have ever seen. He makes guys look SILLY out there, I am very excited about his potential. I also feel like he could be in line to play his FR year if he enrolls early. Absolutely filthy

Nice to see another Virginia commit. Excited for him to get on campus.

Watching his highlights, seems like a difference maker. Perhaps underrated?

@HaydenDubya

Glad to see there were only a few highlights against Poquoson. I think my hip is still laying somewhere on the field at Bruton after a blind side crack back on a kick return.

in Fuller we trust

Somebody say "757"?!

Solid pickup and should add some good slot receiver depth.

Is his size the only reason you are thinking slot instead of wide-out? I have not really seen enough on Fuente's use of the receivers to know what he looks for in each position, or does every coach pretty much want the same prototype?

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

He seems to operate better in space - screens, end-arounds and YAC in the short passing game - though he also looks like he does have the ball skills to snag the occasional jump ball. Still, watching his tape, I see a slot receiver.

Holy pancake, Batman! Did anyone else catch the clip at 2:25 where #1 in white gets blasted by an OL from Hezekiah's team? I had to watch that replay 3 or 4 times.

It was nice, not to rain on your parade, but you have to remember highlight films are just that, the 'best' footage. It's only creditable if there are multiple instances of that 'success'.

It just caught my eye how the kid got totally destroyed. I was amused.

Very smooth athlete, looks like some of those guys Ohio State has had for years. We gotta get the ball in these dudes hands, pretty exciting.

He has notable separation speed, wow! Coach Fuente is building quite an arsenal of weapons. His presence is in itself a recruiting magnet. Let's go Hokies!!

Impressive on his ability to cut and transition so fluidly. He looks very comfortable with the ball in his hands, almost as if he is toying with the opponent. He reminds me of Jerton Evans from UVA in the early 2000's. I played against him while I was at Cave Spring, and the guy was leagues above most high school kids. Really slippery guy, both appear to be able to dodge the big hits. Great get.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

With a name like that, he better know how to raise a barn.

"I'll put a quote here to distract you from my inane comment."-Me

Maybe it was our new Indoor Facility that attracted him.

Let's get the of Hezekiah (Jones) that decommited from Baylor. We'll start an army.

I like that 25 yd. average on punt returns, cause we'll need a good return man, as long as the NCAA doesn't eliminate punt returns for safety reasons, much like they eliminated the kickoff return. That average definitely indicates the dude is a gamebreaker!

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

They haven't eliminated kick offs...

Kickoffs haven't been eliminated, but they've taken a step toward eliminating kickoff returns with recent rule changes, moving up the kickoff location and moving the spot for a touchback out to the 25.

If anything that is more motivation to spur the kicking team to NOT kick the ball out of the end zone and force a return. And vice versa to the returning team

Is that image that he posted a recruiting violation? I know the recruit posted it to twitter, not the university, but I wonder if someone could argue that by creating the image, the football team broke the rules against commenting on a player before signing day?

It is common practice for schools to send mock-ups of recruits in school gear, etc. directly to the recruit. What they choose to do with it after that point is entirely up to the recruit. It's the same as them publicizing their offer. The school says nothing, the recruit is as forthcoming as he wants to be.
