I saw a discussion on 247 and thought I'd bring it over here. If you could schedule one team for VT to play who would you choose and why? Its offseason time fellas.
I personally would like to see a neutral site game at Jerryworld against ASU. I think talent and skill-wise the programs are not too different. Plus I always wanted an excuse to go to that stadium. Not to mention those ASU co-eds you'd get to meet at tailgates.
I'd also like to see Tennessee become an every year thing with a rotation between Bristol, Blacksburg, and Knoxville.

Texas A&M
That's the series I personally like to see...both schools are really similar to each other
I know it would never work as a result of distance, but I wish this was a yearly rivalry. A&M is basically the same school on the other side of the country. My brother goes there and I am always surprised to see how similar they are as a community to us when I visit. Also, the schools military traditions would make for some interesting conversation on a gameday.
It did make for some interesting conversation on gameday, back when we did the home and home with them a few years back. But you're right, with the distance, definitely not feasible.
I wish it was a yearly rivalry also. 3 of my cousins graduated from A&M. I've only been to college station once. It's similar to blacksburg though which is something that I love. Fans and allumni are nice also. Some of their fans want to play us actually. The A&M allumni that I know are cheering for the Hokes when they play the Vols in the battle at bristol. Hopefully Whit Babcock and the A&M athletic director can talk something out if we play them in the direct tv wooden legacy challenge in late November.
Concur, aTm was great and would be great again. Plus an every-year $EC tilt would be awesome!
FSU, would be nice to play them.
Single Game? Oregon
Ongoing series? Ohio State
I second Oregon. I want to see what Bud would do to try to stop them.
He can't stop them, but he may be able to slow them down.
Nice! I'd like to see "Michigan" for a single game "Revenge" match....
I second "Ohio State" for a regularly scheduled series.
I bitterly resent the fact that we have to regularly play Purdue instead of Virginia Tech. I would love to play the Hokies every year.
At least Purdue is in your conference...we're stuck with ECU
south central louisiana state university
We'd win 17-14
A home and home with ASU would be great. The scenery on Gameday in Tempe...is quality. I married a Sun Devil for a reason.
I want another shot at USC
seconded.
Michigan rematch
It's coming
I like the season openers against big name teams like USC, Alabama, etc.
Lots of lead up during the offseason. Makes for an exciting game.
As for the next one, I'd pick LSU.
One time game? I'd like an excuse to go to LSU, UF, Oregon, USC, PSU, Michigan, Texas, A&M, or any other school on my college football bucket list.
I've always wanted a 4 way round robin rivalry with UT, WVU and PSU.
Year 1: PSU vs VT, WVU vs UT
Year 2: UT vs VT, PSU vs WVU.
Year 3: VT vs WVU, PSU vs UT
Rinse and repeat.
If we have to have an FCS team on the schedule, I'm fine with VMI
VMI Football is EPICALLY bad though. I mean, real bad. They haven't had a winning season in probably 20 years or more . I sometimes even forget they are actually DI FCS. I bet Washington and Lee's football team right next door would crush them, and they are D3.
Edit: Last winning season was in 1981, so 35 years. Wow.
That's what we said the last year we played them. Unfortunately, that epochly bad team beat us that year. :--(
And I was there. What a sad day in Lane that was.
VMI is seriously upgrading their facilities in Lexington. But I do worry a little about the 100+ year old sewer line that runs right under the middle of their field.
Yeah, the new indoor facility they are building is seriously impressive. Almost could give ours a run for its money.
This facility isn't going to be a football practice field, more multi-purpose/corps training, but still.
It's just shocking to me how bad they are/have been at football for so long. You seriously almost forget they are DI FCS. If an FBS team schedules them and beats them by 100, it should almost still count as a loss in my mind for even scheduling them.
Not anywhere as tall
Agreed, definitely not as tall. Since it won't be used for football, it wouldn't make sense to have the ceiling that high anyway. Looks pretty sweet when you drive by now that it's nearly finished. Ours is still top-notch, though.
How old are the steam tunnels at Tech? Spent a couple of "interesting" evenings down there back in the day.
Well, at least the 50 yard line will have some seriously green grass
If we have to schedule a FCS team I'd like a school that is somewhat nearby, a school I don't just want to win for winnings sake, but a school I want to beat because I don't like them.
See but if they're an FCS school that means we'll have to pay them to come here and play us. So congrats, you stomped on the team you hate but you gave them quite a bit of money to do so. I'd rather keep the money, not play them, and continue hating them.
I just described Liberty for me. I hate that school, I hate that we're paying them to play us, and if we don't stomp all over their flaming asses I will probably blow my top.
I heartily second that emotion. Absolutely loathe playing them.
Yeah but I don't give two shits about Austin Peay or Eastern Michigan. But I enjoyed watching us beat William & Mary. Them being in-state makes it more fun, you can trash talk and have bragging rights. We're going to pay somebody, why not an in-state school?
That's fair I suppose. I haven't looked at any numbers but I assume we also would pay an in-state program less just because of travel expenses.
As far as trash talking and bragging rights go they're a level below us (one could argue multiple levels if you consider P5/G5, too). Bragging over your P5 team beating an FCS team in football is like bragging about a college graduate beating a grade schooler on a math test.
Please note I'm generally against FCS games in general. I don't see the benefit of them at all, aside from "Shit, we screwed up our scheduling and can't fill this hole in time." Again, you're supposed to win and win big, so if you do no one cares. Dare drop a game to an FCS team though and you're ridiculed (honestly, as you should be).
My wife went to Richmond, and I am very much looking forward to that game in 2021 as a family event. Besides, she can hang their national championship over my head, so it would be nice to get a head to head win.
But I generally know people connected to most of the FCS schools in Virginia, so there's usually someone to have a friendly rivalry with. Don't really know anyone connected to an FCS school outside of Virginia, so it just becomes a pile of "who cares".
I mean, remember when Austin Peay State was added to the schedule. You could hear the collective voice of Hokie Nation all saying "Who?" at the same time.
To RebJanus, I completely get your opposition to scheduling FCS teams. I'm generally for it as a sort of warm-up game to ease into the season because there aren't exhibition games. But I won't argue for or against them because I don't feel strongly one way or another. If we're going to play FCS teams, my argument is make it interesting, make me care. Basically for the reasons bluehokie outlined.
I guess I can understand that, I have an uncle who's a big ECU fan and these past few Thanksgivings have been rough.
We always will with UVA on the schedule
But UVA is already on the schedule. Can only have one
VMI would be perfect for Corps Homecoming. At least there's some historical connection there. I'd rather keep the FCS rotation to be in-state, because I can usually get bragging rights over someone I know.
I would love to exact revenge on JMU
ECU! Ha Ha......no I think South Carolina, Mississippi, or Mississippi State.
A home and home against Auburn would be pretty awesome.
We get mine this year....Notre Dame.
Yeah, we've really got mine already lined up.
ND 3x in the next 4 years. I don't even mind playing there twice for one return trip.
UT in Bristol. I agree that it would have been nice if this was a 3 game series, but whatever.
PSU, Wisconsin and Michigan coming up, hard to beat that.
WVU in a 3 game series, I'm fine with that.
Even the 4 game series with UMD is fine with me. Better than ECU, but I hope it is paired with a better game.
I just want to make sure we play 2 big games a year, which we have this year....then a 3 year hiatus* with more ECU as the 2nd best game we play....then at least two good games a year. 2021 is awesome, we play Michigan, WVU and Notre Dame. I would vote to swap out Richmond for Penn State that year....but I'm one of those masochists who would rather lose an interesting game than win a cupcake.
If I was to add anymore, I would like aTm, LSU, Mich St, Nebraska, or UGA. I'm hesitant to sign up for a west coast game because the travel out there screws up your week so bad. But I do like the idea of spreading the brand.
* 2017 and 2018 we play Clemson and FSU, but 2019 has Wake as our divisional crossover game.
Wisky will bail a,,,,,,,,,,gin!
Ideally, I'd like to play another military college or academy once a year. Rotate between TAMU, VMI, Citadel, Army, Navy, and Air Force. If we're talking a one off, then Penn State, since somehow we've never played them.
Oklahoma. All of the fans I know are nice people, know the game, and have appreciated Beamer. Storied program that is always almost great. Would rather play them than rematch someone else.
I almost said this, simply for the fact that it seemed wrong that we hadn't played them. But we did, once in the early 90s. Apparently we didn't even rate a home and home at that point.
Wow. I cannot believe I do not remember that. I've tried to drink enough to forget a loss, and have been know to start really early when expecting one, but I was so successful for that game I forgot I succeeded, which I guess made it a success, at least until you messed it up with facts.
Next thing you'll tell me is we have played at FedEx field before. /s
I wanna get Cal again just to avenge Aaron Rodgers laughing at our defense....
I was laughing at that pitiful defense that game.
I was not laughing
A game in Russia would be nice.
Username checks out
In soviet Russia, football plays you
I wouldn't mind a game or two with Michigan State. I feel like we're similar programs.
John Ballein for many years stressed that we wouldn't go west beyond the big12 getting Nebraska and TA&M before they switched conferences. With Whit in house, I would love a trip out west every once in a while. Especially ASU.
I would love to play the academies. Navy and Tech at M&T Bank Stadium would be crazy.
Would we want that back-to-back with our GT game?
I don't realistically see PJ there much longer, doubt it would be much of a consideration.
I'm more interested in sharing the connection between the Corps and the academies.
I can only hope. I'm getting tired of his brand of football and general smugness. And chinballs.
That being said, I do respect his ability to coach by just standing there and watching the game.
West Coast on Saturday, GT on following Thursday. Sounds about right.
Michigan State. Good, friendly tailgating (they have fans a lot like us). Hard-nosed, blue-collar football
This! I can attest. My great uncle got his master's from Sparty and BS and PhD from VT. Very similar schools, both with top notch dairy science departments.
We should milk that for everything it's worth.
That series would bring in more cheddar than the entire state of Wisconsin.
Please stop the f'ing puns! I'm going to throw some uva voodoo on you guys. It make bourbon taste like shit and you become a Zima-holic.
Does make a gif not work here anymore?
feeling alright there Musky? You seem a little...fishy.
I think I'd like to see a H&H with Florida.
Good luck getting UF to leave the state of Florida for an OOC game. If my Google fu is any good, UF hasn't left the state (excluding bowl and conference games) since '91.
I'd go to Hawaii
And that would allow us a 13th regular season game if we went there!
With their return game scheduled for mid November here...
Tennessee, UGA, South Carolina, Ole Miss (for the ladies)
I thought Ole Miss for the same reason but then realized that I'd have to go to Mississippi
I've never been but I hear Oxford has the best gameday atmosphere anywhere
the National Championship Title Game, of course
(insert blueblood program name here) in Lane
Seriously, enough with the neutral site games. Give me a game against any widely considered elite program at home. Last year's Ohio State game was awesome, and such a nice breather from the decades of play where the highest profile team we play at home every year is in the ACC, by a wide margin.
On a Thursday night
South Carolina, Tennessee, or Georgia; all in a neutral site, ie ATL, Charlotte.
Yes! All the games in Charlotte. I concur.
I want a rematch with:
-Boise
-USC(w)
-Cal Bears
-Michigan
-UMD (2 games so we can take control of the overall series)
I would like to schedule:
-Iowa
-Utah
I feel like these 2 teams try to compare and put themselves above us and we just need to beat them to settle it once and for all.
EDIT: I also feel like we owe MAJOR payback to squawk, balk, Jay-hawk. Kansas.
Out of deference for domicilic harmony, I would prefer never to play Iowa. I don't think I'd have too great a week afterward, especially if we beat my Hawkeye-wife's Iowa boys. Been married too long, I still have to be able to put my feet under the dinner table.
I have family Iowa fans (dad grew up there), but would like to play them for that reason. They are some of the worst at taking trash talk of any fans I ever seen, but that could just be my family.
HAH! See, I KNEW it! Never a doubt.
-Boise
-USC(w)
-Cal Bears
-Michigan
-UMD
All coulda, shoulda, woulda's. Let's see what this new Sheriff can do in the coming years. He's got Tennessee, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Penn State, West bygod Virginia, and some others to make us forget those engagements.
FTFY. And I am appalled that you are so willing to just forget, overlook and shuck it like a dry fart. You should be carrying a chip on your shoulder.
Yeah, what could have been is done. I'm still mad at the coaching farts that went into many of those losses. No more of that shit. Take it out on those that come. If we get a rematch with any of the above and Kansas, just kick their arses without mercy.
I can't get that motivated for a rematch against Kansas. It was never about them. Biggest mistake of Frank's career was not firing Stiney before we got on the bus to leave the Orange bowl. Anybody who did know he had to go after watching that game should never have any say in hiring or firing an OC. That game still pisses me off more than any other, including the Michigan Sugar. Any other OC and I say they bet on the other team and were throwing the game on purpose. F that. I need a drink.
I'm sure Ore would join you on that.
Playing UMD home and home would pretty much guarantee us 2 home games
Home and home with Colorado or Washington.
Because...reasons
Or the Steelers
Atlanta Falcons.
I'm not done with you yet, Matt Ryan.
Oregon, MSU, Texas
Oklahoma, Auburn, Michigan State
Not exactly relevant here but if you look at the VTFootball Twitter's response, some fan from ODoUr predicted they would
beat us by 4tdsdominate us for 4 qtrs in 2018. Gotta get summa whatever it is he's got.Edit: he also says he trying to get blocked by @vtfootball, so they responded by saying Wyatt, Augie and Parker could oblige him
Edit2: I misread the tweet
A&M for sure. College station is nice. A hour and a way from. H-Town a.k.a. Houston feels like you're in the middle of nowhere though.Dedicated fans. Similar colors.Great traditions. Nice fans. Some of the Aggies that I know want to play us. They also want to See us beat the vols in week 2.
TCU would be a pretty cool one off game/home and home to have. Allows Fuente to go up against an old mentor and gives us a game against a good program we've never played before. Plus it's hard to get more unique than the Hokies vs. the Horned Frogs.
ASU? I don't know, Appy State is dangerous.
My top 3 home and homes that we have played that aren't scheduled in the future were LSU, Nebraska, and Texas A&M. 3 programs that are traditionally good, have rowdy fanbases, and usually makes for a good game (let's forget 2007 LSU ever happened). I'd like to see one of those rekindled.
We won 5 of those 6 games. Feelsgoodman
And the sixth was worth it to go to Death Valley at night.
Appy State would be cool.
Since I've been living in Alabama I would want to play Auburn. They are two very similar programs. Even the two towns themselves are very similar.
Them or Texas because I want to go back to Austin.
LSU in the Super Dome, but I'm always just looking for an excuse to go to New Orleans
Wisconsin.
I'd love to whip Texas' ass again. Obviously in Lane, wearing #allmarooneverything, just to prove that it doesn't matter what we wear, we're still better than them.

Montana and Georgetown.
Want to see the Hoyas tumble, eh?
Georgia or Texas
VT needs to start improving its footprint (playing ECU for the next 20 years does not help) and getting down south in SEC country/Texas area wouldn't be so bad. Not to mention Texas and Georgia have some awesome tailgates and the fans are pretty nice.
UGA Fans = Awful
They're all over the spectrum. Great college town though and would be well worth the visit. I would highly recommend the trip down there if we ever play them.
One of those lingerie bowl teams
