loluva is excited! They've picked up six, count'em, six commitments in three days. Two 3*'s. two 2*'s, and two unranked players, one a kicker and the other a preferred walk-on. None of the six received an offer from the good guys.

I saw this on The Sabre. I watch some of the film, don't mean to throw shade on these kids but I was unimpressed. The recruits they have so far are pretty much what you would expect from a program like UVA. Fear not, for I have a feeling Zorn is about to have a baller recruiting season this year. Just a hunch.
I was going to say something along the shade line also. Hey, a guy gets a chance to get an education at a good school, I'm not going to fault him or put him down. I just think it's hilarious how the who's can get so excited.
I've always liked Zorn....just hope one day he can bring us the next Largent!
There's a lot of "but" in that article.
Well, with a name like that, you know he's picking UVA.
Oh Carruthers, I believe it's Clayton Cheatham III.
That's what I was looking for. But being UVA, I'll just wait to see it between the grass stains when he's introduced to our defense.
He likes Zima, a great novel at the game, cashmere and hopes someday to work at the family law firm Dewey, Cheatham and Howe.
Of course, this is the prestigious law firm originally kept on retainer by the UNC athletic department.
I will hold judgement on these individuals until I see them on the field. Until then, I will despise them unconditionally.
Most of their good recruits suck, so most of their under-the-radar guys will probably suck too
Has Bronco used the Beamer line "we'll take ours and play against theirs" yet?
Their OL recruit is only 6'4" and 260 pounds? Tim Settle might be charged with capital murder when he plows right through him.
To be fair if their strength and conditioning program is anything worth while, he will probably put on about 20-30 pounds. That is still a big 17 old kid.
sounds like our average OL recruit in recent years.
At least theirs exists.
A great attempt by the writer of this article of putting lipstick on a "pig".
To be completely fair, they're taking a lot of lineman. Lineman are always ranked a bit lower because they're a bit tougher to project. No one is ever entirely sure how a 17 year olds body will react when they get in a college weight lifting program, some guys can't add any weight while others add 70 pounds. Not having watched the film they're probably ranked lower in part because they're a bit lighter. Also as a general rule, I hate freaking out about recruiting rankings in mid summer, these guys are going to be reevaluated like 3 more times before they sign. Some guys go from top 100 players to mid 3 stars while unranked dudes become blue chip prospects off of senior film.
Also, I believe many early draft picks of linemen are also 2-3 stars coming out of high school. I wouldn't read anything into this other than "they're hoo's so they should be treated accordingly"
Client of mine told me Sunday that VT "better watch out because UVA is going to be really good this year and probably beat the Hokies. " After I got through laughing for at least 45 seconds, I asked who he rooted for... Notre Dame. This guy may not end up being a repeat client, but I'm wondering are there lots of people out there besides UVA fans who think they will actually be any good???
...I think there's just a lot of people who are really down on the Hokies lately. The shine of the 10 win season days has definitely worn of for casual CFB fans.
My expectation is that their recruiting will be much worse than under the previous regime (when it wasn't as good as they thought it was anyway). Their player development will be much better under Bronco.
I could not agree more
Ha! The 'cherry' on their proverbial recruiting sundae is a recruited walk-on with a master plan for HOPES of being QB1 for the scout team.... L. O. L.
"He COULD make for an excellent scout team quarterback immediately to help prepare for teams with option attacks, and grow into a more prominent role later in his career."
You do you, UVA, you do you.
This is the classic recruiting we've all come to know and love by the Crossed Butter Knives.
Throwing stones in glass houses?
UVA might not be great at recruiting, but they're 38th nationally and 7th in the ACC. The mighty Hokies are 33rd nationally and 6th in the ACC. The Hokies have one recruit better than a 3-star (and barely).
Laughing at their plight seems to neglect the fact that the Hokies are essentially in the same category.
We could be dead last in the ACC and LOLUVa be (God forbid) first in recruiting and I would still take every opportunity to laugh at them. Remember the year we swept them in baseball and they went on to win the college world series? Cause I choose to acknowledge just the first part of that sentence.
The main source of the laughter is the verbiage, combined with the extreme level of excitement over the commitment from an invited walk-on. Maybe he will be a diamond in the rough, but until then... They may have a similar ranking, but I think it's pretty obvious who has gotten more bang for the buck over the last decade plus...Ring out that fun sponge and enjoy the fodder :D
I, for one, want to see a press release where they openly complain about the quality of their recruits
Well, it's quite easy, you see. You just offer a kid a scholarship and watch Twitter explode, and then when someone better comes along, you tell his position coach to call him and let him know that we needed to rework our numbers and we might have to gray shirt or blue shirt him. Or just make up a color of shirt and tell him we gotta do that to him. Hopefully he decommits because he didn't want to put off his entire academic and athletic career for a year and we don't have to talk to him again. It's a win-win for both sides, really.
Kind of how our fan base was over the commitment of a preferred walk-on, immediate contributor, named Sam Rogers?
To be fair, our introduction to Sam was a picture of him looking like he was about to eat some poor bastard half his size during a basketball game. Much of the celebration was likely motivated by straight-up fear over the wellbeing of everyone near him.
For reference:
Also Sam is a cyborg so you really can't compare the 2.
Sam wasn't even the first time we went nuts over the pic of a recruit before he had the chance to put on the pads for VT.
Remember this guy?
nick acree says hi as well. people were pumping him up as a 5* player based on some camps prior to his senior season.
That dude looks like he's had breast augmentation....what's Beamer recruiting guys in halter tops for? You know it's the beginning of the end when your best recruits are cross-dressers.
Tell him yourself!
https://twitter.com/hokiesfb/status/743843836825305088
I didn't realize Acree was still working with the team. Glad to see him contributing in an alternative fashion. It's too bad his injuries prevented him developing into that 4-star DT/OL that we hoped.
I would love to see him go the Rock route, and pick up acting.

He's my first choice if there is ever a remake of the Terminator.
Maybe, but did Frank come out and openly say, "this Rogers kid has a great chance of being a really good scout team running back for us. Eventually, down the road, we hope he's able to see some meaningful action later in his collegiate career." ??
That's essentially what BM is saying about this kid... Besides, throw out a few names of invited walk-on QBs at a national level who ended up being significant contributors in their college careers (at QB). There aren't many...
the UVA fan blog is the one saying it, not BM. Every fan base loves the kids it signs
And thats a fun one! Names I came up with off the top of my head: Baker Mayfield, for some reason I think that BYU started a walk on a couple years ago who was pretty good. Maybe Max Hall? Matt Mcgloin (PSU) and Austin Davis (USM) were both really good. Not sure if I missed anyone notable. Though if he's a running qb he might be able to find a spot at a different position
Blasphemy! Sam Rogers shall never be named in the same sentence with another walk-on for any college football team, especially not with one from LOLUVA...
In all seriousness, you have a valid point good sir.
They are from the same high school
Yea, I'm not really going to feel good about UVa's plight until I see VT doing better in the recruiting department. I'm seriously hoping for some improvement both on the field and in recruiting.
It seems to me that VT is in far better shape, but I'm looking forward to seeing some tangible proof of that.
When you win 12 straight, you can throw anything from any kind of house
Is it bad that I would rather win twelve straight in a single season?
The only reason that a 5 team gap in the ratings exist is because they currently have 4 more student athletes committed than we do. Our "average" player rating trumps them much more than our team comparison. By the end of the recruiting season that gap should definitely expand as our total number of recruits matches theirs.
Yep... been trying to avoid this thread for that very reason. It's one thing if they're selling themselves as awesome at recruiting and we're lapping them, but mocking then for having essentially the same class as us?
I'd prefer not to build up the bad karma like that this offseason.
Rutgers pulling in some home grown talent.. that's been an interesting team/coaching staff to follow lately if anyone is bored lol.
Finished 76th for 2016, sitting at 18 for 2017.
I smell some NCAA violations!
Yea, they're really pudding in some good work on the 'crootin trail.
*groans*
I read "crootin' tail" and thought this was more a reference to Crosby in current events...
they hired a HC who has a good resume of recruiting wins even if it was for OSU.. think he's starting to gain the trust of NJ schools and recruits which would be a big W for his program.
NJ is so underrated in terms of talent IMO
lol It's not like our is THAT much better. we get a 2* player or less and everybody screams he is underrated!!! because of his highlight film
2-3* recruit commits to you: "he's underrated and has a huge ceiling!"
4-5* recruit commits to you: "he's the best player at his position/in the country/ever!"
2-3* recruit commits to rival/any other school: "meh, he's probably not that good"
4-5* recruit commits to rival/any other school: "he's overrated and had serious flaws, we didn't want him anyways!"
(wash, rinse, repeat)
Anyone commits to Ole Miss "How much is he getting paid?"
lol exactly.... some fans just wear their orange and maroon shades a little bit too much
And this is a problem why?
Totally agree. If wearin' them is wrong, I don't wanna be right.
never said it was a problem, just reality
My thoughts exactly. We throw shade on LOLUVa in football like it's a right. We have struggled to beat them four years in a row now. We are literally in uncharted territory as far as VA recruiting goes. We both have coaches with solid records yet largely unproven on the big stage leading the programs. Albeit, Fuente has a lot more upside, but Bronco's record doesn't reflect any slouch.
Personally, however, I think Bronco is a joke hire for UVa and indicates a program that has no intentions whatsover of being competitive. You might as well have dropped him in out of a spaceship from Mars - this is the first time he has lived/really recruited east of the Mississippi. The "coaching at the Notre Dame of Mormonism" angle is gone. I'm skeptical, but there is unknown on both sides.
Regardless, I'm not going to start giving UVA's recruiting class flak unless we start reeling in 4 and 5 stars regularly. Both programs have coaches who trust their evaluation and system more than anything else. So I'm not going to talk much this offseason.
Eh, I think all fan bases in general have that problem. I have seen some fan bases (cough cough SEC) throw personal attacks at recruits that don't choose their school.
Oh I agree that a lot of other fan bases probably have the problem too.... my thing was why are we throwing shade at their recruiting class when our isn't something to brag home about either.
It's LOLUVa...why we still talking about this?
After reading this thread, I sense some tightness... maybe some pacing going on out there...
This thread seems to be a prelude to Fuente vs. Bronco, chapter one.
I think the best remedy is a lead off salvo of:

"38-0, bro", just to get the ball rolling.
I was at one shutout of UVA, Oct. 18, 1980, 30-0 in Lane. It was glorious. Students were rolling the stands with toilet paper.
That was my sophomore year, and that was an excellent birthday present (one day in advance). Was kind of a cool rainy day, but nobody cared. The east stands weren't even completed, and it was still the largest crowd to have witnessed a football game in the commonwealth at the time. I think I still have the front page of the Roanoke Times from the following day, with the aerial photo of the crowd. Glorious indeed!
Oh...yeah...my belated birthday present, too...sure... (I'll be 36½ in October...)
My sophomore year also. I have a picture I took of the East stands with TP flying.
Did a little research on both classes going on the 247 Composite ranking because I have nothing better to do.
So essentially we have the 33rd class (if Hafiz commits tomorrow it will bump up to around 27 or so) and we have 12 commits compared to UVA's 16 and they have the 38th ranked class. Our lowest rated guy, Devante Smith, ranks higher than 7 of their commits. Their top guy would rank 4th on our current commit list.
While VT's class isn't stellar by any means, it is still significantly better than UVA's, and the main reason UVA's ranks 38th is because of numbers, and not quality. Like I said before, if Hafiz commits tomorrow we would bump up to a fringe top 25 class while UVA would be around 40 and still falling.
VT's class vs. UVA's class.
Neither is good, but you are definitely right. I just find it a bit hypocritical that when we get 2* guys we have people arguing they are "fuente fits" and arguments like that, but if they get a 2* he's automatically a waste of a scholly. While it's not a popular opinion, by any means, I think we've taken way too many reach kids this class already and that's what their class looks like as well. Neither coach is selling their vision well to difference makers.
Couldn't agree more. This isn't a national championship talent pool. We will compete for coastal and maybe ACC titles, but this is not a national champion group of kids.
